NBA 2021 Playoffs+ thread

I estimate there are maybe 10-12 Primates left on this site, and they all post in the NBA thread.

Real life news:
Keith Pompey @PompeyOnSixers
Warriors reject #Sixers’ steep asking price, walk away from Ben Simmons trade centered on Andrew Wiggins, James Wiseman and four first-rounders

with the 28th pick, the sixers take miles mcbride, PG, west virginia

PHO (gregf) is on the clock.
utah (doesn'tevenmatter) is on deck.
MIL (swollenjaw) is in the hole.

here's what i said about mcbride back in may:

this is my kind of guy.
good wiggle
good burst
good tempo
good vision
tight handle
low center of gravity
quick feet
amphibious

just a really solid PG prospect. i don't see star potential, but he seems like a reasonably solid bet to be a starting caliber, top 25-ish, PG.

It is still early in the Ben Simmons trade talks, but everything I hear reports that the 76ers are asking an insane amount. Admittedly what I am reading may not be totally unbiased, since there are incentives on all sides.
   3305. jmurph Posted: July 29, 2021 at 05:09 PM (#6031282)
Woj says this trade isn't done, but says there's "momentum" for it:

With Harrell opt-in, Lakers are able to to move toward completing a deal to acquire Kings guard Buddy Hield for forward Kyle Kuzma and Harrell, sources tell ESPN.

Jason Dumas: "Source: The Sixers hope to trade Ben Simmons tonight. The asking price remains the same. The relationship seems to be over. It’s not a matter of if anymore, but when."
The Philadelphia 76ers wanted four first-round draft picks, three pick swaps, and a young player from the Spurs in exchange for Ben Simmons, per @KevinOConnorNBA
Keith Pompey @PompeyOnSixers
Warriors reject #Sixers’ steep asking price, walk away from Ben Simmons trade centered on Andrew Wiggins, James Wiseman and four first-rounders

for what it's worth, my read on all of this is that the sixers already have a deal done, and they're happy with it, but they're calling around the league one last time, to make sure they don't miss someone who's willing to break every bank in the western hemisphere to get simmons.
   3308. jmurph Posted: July 29, 2021 at 05:14 PM (#6031286)
Shams Charania @ShamsCharania
Just in: The Lakers and Wizards are engaged on a trade that would send Russell Westbrook to L.A., sources tell @TheAthletic @Stadium. Westbrook wants a move elsewhere and the Lakers are his preferred destination, sources said.
   3309. aberg Posted: July 29, 2021 at 05:16 PM (#6031288)
Hield seems like a better fit with Lebron and Davis, but Kuzma and Harrell seem like better overall talent.
   3310. jmurph Posted: July 29, 2021 at 05:17 PM (#6031289)
Details here from Shams:
The Lakers and Wizards are discussing a trade that would send Kyle Kuzma, Montrezl Harrell, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope for Westbrook, sources tell

The Lakers' No. 22 pick in the Draft could be in play, too.

Sounds like Cam Payne insurance.

It has sounded like most of the usual suspects are getting ruled out. Any speculation on where that deal would be?
   3312. jmurph Posted: July 29, 2021 at 05:23 PM (#6031294)
When Woj and Shams disagree on a trade, my understanding of league rules is it comes down to the BBTF NBA thread. So what do we think, should the Lakers make the Hield trade or the Westbrook one?
   3313. aberg Posted: July 29, 2021 at 05:25 PM (#6031295)
No, no.

DEN (murray or porter), CHI (lavine), WAS (beal), POR (lillard or mccollum), IND (take your pick), OKC (kemba), DET (hamburgers).

the thing about the TOR and SAS offers (as reported) is that even if the value is off by an order of magnitude, the package itself -- a bunch of future picks, and 2 or 3 solid rotation players -- is not a high bar, in terms of scarcity. 25 teams in the league can make that deal happen.
   3316. jmurph Posted: July 29, 2021 at 05:29 PM (#6031299)
Gotta say my initial thought is I hate Westbrook for the Lakers? But LeBron and Davis are very good so if anyone can make it all add up I'd have faith in them to do it.

Also initial thought is that the Wiz are doing great to move Westbrook without taking back any bad contracts, something I wouldn't have guessed was possible.
3317. Tom Cervo, backup catcher Posted: July 29, 2021 at 05:40 PM (#6031303)
I think I'd much rather have Hield than Westbrook were I the Lakers. I think tship or someone had a take about how this *could* work offensively, but it seems unlikely Lakers would play that way and Lakers do not have nearly the spacing that the Rockets did.

DEN (murray or porter), CHI (lavine), WAS (beal), POR (lillard or mccollum), IND (take your pick), OKC (kemba), DET (hamburgers).

I guess McCollum, Kemba, or a Pacer would make sense. Or DLo.
   3318. GregF Posted: July 29, 2021 at 05:41 PM (#6031305)
Payne insurance aside, Phoenix should be looking at picking up the Best Point God Mentee Available. The Shamet deal is a slick way of finding one - having not made that, Phoenix selects Sharife Cooper, PG, Auburn.
   3319. SteveF Posted: July 29, 2021 at 05:42 PM (#6031306)
If Westbrook goes you'd have to think that gives Beal the excuse he seems to need to ask for a trade. Washington isn't exactly a free agent destination, so building around Simmons has to seem attractive.

Prince's salary for this year is about $14m under Rubio's, so it's probably a precursor to another trade or a way to use the MLE.

I just don't understand why the Lakers are so devoted to the idea of proving that LeBron teams don't need spacing. Like, this would be three separate roster constructions in three years that have actively ignored spacing. I swear it feels like intentional contrarianism.

atlanta picks
31 sg bones hyland, vcu
32 sf joe wieskamp, iowa

i entered the draft pretty sure that i was going to land wieskamp with a high 2nd round pick. good catch and shoot guy with untapped athleticism. needs to work with a flexibility coach.
bones, meanwhile, needs to put on weight and get reps, but could be a really good 2nd unit scorer in time.

considered herb jones as a defensive specialist. cooper and thor were on my list as well (obv gone).

Actual Pistons are trading 37 (which feels useful) for 57, just to get rid of Plumlee's 2 year/17 million. Which feels dumb. Unless they want to do something with cap space. And doing something with cap space when they're that bad also feels dumb. Who knows! Cade's a superstar!

That would be fun to watch, but I suspect one of the wings will get dealt for a PG. Unless Lowry stays.

Nuggets will take day'ron Sharpe.

@DLGM what do you want to do, I'm on the clock with #35.

I think Green/Suggs has always been sort of a pick'em.
suggs has a much less impressive physical profile than the players taken ahead of him.

as players get further away from having played in meaningful games, teams have a tendency to fall in love with athletic ability above all else.
Probably have Van Vleet starting
not on my team, he wouldn't. he's not even 6'7".

Not shocked Washington got an asset for Westbrook which is why I was fine not dealing him the draft. I think they should 100% move Beal now though, and I like moving him for a mix of young talent and picks. I think they should do something like the Simmons deal, truly. Not even sure they’d be worse next year.
   3371. rr: cosmopolitan elite Posted: July 29, 2021 at 08:43 PM (#6031394)
Hey guys I knew that the Ghost Grizzlies had taken Duarte, although I suppose my wording in the text did not make that clear. I was joking about drafting for Boston in this exercise, but if none of the Boston guys wants to do it, I will do a little more research and do my best.

IRL, my phone is blowing up from Lakers fans pals about trade stuff.

   3373. asinwreck Posted: July 29, 2021 at 08:44 PM (#6031397)
Whoops. sorry on the numbers. 33rd pick was Rokas to the Bulls.
   3374. spivey 2 Posted: July 29, 2021 at 08:46 PM (#6031399)
Suggs also played on an insanely talented team with a pro offense and a weak league. I’d take him over Barnes but I understand why everyone, even the stat nerd types, seemed to have him 4th.

Quentin grimes for Denver
   3376. GregF Posted: July 29, 2021 at 08:49 PM (#6031403)
3328: He’d been tops on my board for awhile. Not sure I’d want to be handing him the keys to a bad team from day 1, but filling in for Paul’s load management would be a great starting point.

3331: Mann was next on my board, but the Suns have responded well to pure passers in Rubio and Paul which made a true point a priority.

That said, if anyone would trade a pick coming up for Jovon Carter I’d be game.

TJ McBride @TJMcBrideNBA
The Magic are fun again.

Jalen Suggs
RJ Hampton
Jonathan Isaac
Markelle Fultz
Cole Anthony
Chema Okeke
Franz Wagner

Sign me the #### up.

....one of these things is not like the others....
Mark Deeks @MarkDeeksNBA
It just occurred to me that Mo Wagner likely just lost his roster spot to Franz Wagner.

I think fake Detroit is up for 37 (even though real Detroit doesn't have the pick any more) and if that's the case I'll take Herbert Jones.

EDIT - If Charlotte is here and wants to take the pick, though, they can do so. I don't know how this works.
   3379. Oriole Tragic Posted: July 29, 2021 at 08:57 PM (#6031408)
I was strongly considering taking Suggs at #2 before trading out of the first round.

Seems like ORL got good value.

Orlando Magic fans: congratulations, your team is gonna be endlessly fascinating to watch grow.
Sacramento Kings fans: I'm sorry. No, I don't know. Yes, I hear you. No, I can't say when it will stop. Yes, it probably does involve blackmail. No, there is no plan.

In Pascal Siakam, OG Anunoby and Scottie Barnes, the Raptors have more than 21 and a half feet of wingspan.

At 39, Sacramento takes Tre Mann.

He's been mocked in the first. He's tall for a guard. He's probably not a point.

If I ###### up and he's already taken, I'll draft Juhann Begarin.

Is Davion Mitchell even Turkish? smh my head.

Orlando has to be thrilled with how the draft went. They caught a break with Suggs falling and didn’t draft two athletes who can’t shoot.
   3387. Voodoo Posted: July 29, 2021 at 09:14 PM (#6031421)

Ha! Mark my words, teams (not just Toronto) will rue the day they passed on Jalen Suggs. Orlando wins this draft.

Ehhh, counterpoint: Orlando drafted Frank Kaminsky 2, the Frankening and a lead guard who can't really shoot.

Sengun might be a good fit next to Draymond.
   3394. jmurph Posted: July 29, 2021 at 09:23 PM (#6031431)
Not sure the thread spent enough time crushing the Pistons for the Plumlee business. I’m certain we all mocked the original signing last year.
   3395. rr: cosmopolitan elite Posted: July 29, 2021 at 09:25 PM (#6031432)
That has worked out OK for Malcolm Brogdon.

BTW jmurph if you want to pick for your guys at 45 go for it. But I have figured out 3 options for the spot if I actually do it. Funny looking at Boston stuff for info.
   3396. jmurph Posted: July 29, 2021 at 09:27 PM (#6031433)
Do it RR! I couldn’t name a single guy still available.

Why pick Alperen Sengun when you already have Mason Plumlee? That and more in our live draft blog with me and @Sam Vecenie ... theathletic.com/2740150/2021/0…

GSW had a nice draft as well. Kuminga was not supposed to be there at 7, and I had them mocked to pick Moody with that pick (who they ended up getting with 14).
