I estimate there are maybe 10-12 Primates left on this site, and they all post in the NBA thread.

#76ers 28th pick Jaden Springer says he’s been working out with Keith Williams, Markelle Fultz’s former trainer.

It's one thing to do that in the privacy of your own gym, but to admit it publicly is a major error in judgment.

Real trade (per Woj)
Tristan Thompson to ATL for Dunn and a 23 2nd. (Somehow Caboclo goes to Boston? I don’t think I believe that bit? And how would it work under the cap?)

EDIT: He meant Bruno Fernando.

Anyway, I hate it.

Tristan Thompson to ATL

Huh? Capela, Collins, and OO all seem like better PT options at 5. Collins, Gallo, and Hunter are all better options at 4. I thought they were expecting to keep Collins. And if they weren't Thompson seems like a very poor replacement.
   3505. Fourth True Outcome Posted: July 30, 2021 at 05:52 PM (#6031745)
That is a better deal than I thought the Celtics would be able to get for Thompson.

On the Lakers/Westbrook move, I don't doubt that LeBron/AD/Russ can figure out how to coexist. I think they'll have to play Bron and AD at the 4 and 5, but that should work out. The thing to me is how much trading multiple decent players for Westbrook thins out a roster they don't have much room to buttress, which is therefore a pretty big bet on the ability of those three players to stay healthy. (Maybe they'll be able to get better ring-chasers on small money than I think, I guess.) The outcome range for that roster feels pretty large depending on how much of next season they're able to have their big three healthy.
   3506. jmurph Posted: July 30, 2021 at 05:56 PM (#6031746)
I think Dunn is barely an NBA player but yeah, that’s a useful trade, well done.

Okongwu is out at several months - Thompson is the stopgap

This is the same idea I had here except I wanted a Chris Boucher type instead of Tristan ###### Thompson.
—-
When he was healthy, Dunn was one of the best defenders in the league - full stop. On offense, he’s also a great defender.

Belated: I'm fine with the Bulls pick of Ayo. I think he'll have a long career, but mainly as a backup (or a starter on a tanking team). Unrelated: I don't like baseball so much today.
   3511. Mike A Posted: July 30, 2021 at 06:31 PM (#6031760)
Yeah, Okongwu is out until at least February so the Hawks needed a big body for the second/third unit. Thompson will get 10 minutes here and there while Okongwu heals and Jalen Johnson learns the system. I like Dunn, but he played 78 whole minutes last year and those injuries are an issue.

Not a big deal in the grand scheme, and oddly both Hawk fans and Celtic fans seem to like the deal. But like Der-K said, I would have preferred the Hawks go after someone better than Thompson. I'm not a big fan either.

As a side, I'll be interested to see how Sharife Cooper develops as a potential PG backup. Really happy the Hawks were able to get him at #48.

Mike A, I’m happy with Cooper too. I don’t want him with backup minutes anytime soon - the jumper needs work, he needs to calm the f down a bit, and his defense is awful … but there’s a ceiling there.

And with Delon around (who can manage a game if not be a dynamic playmaker), he won’t have to.

(Will note: saw some people online saying how Wright is a knockdown shooter from deep. I wish, but no. Just be happy with slightly too passive but still effective spackle!)

Oklahoma City Thunder

My goal with the Thunder in this draft was to acquire high-ceiling players who conceivably could develop into All-Stars. My personal philosophy is that if the analyses of the player suggest that he doesn't at least play hard on the defensive end of the court or that he has a low BB IQ, the likelihood that the player will reach his ceiling is low. OTOH, if the player tries defensively and has a good BB IQ, he is substantially more likely to develop into a useful NBA player.

Josh Giddey, the sixth pick in our draft and IRL, is a 6’8” high basketball IQ guy, great passer, pretty good handle, good finisher at the rim, strong rebounder, with room to grow as a shooter and definitely as a defender. He’s very young, doesn’t turn 19 until October. Didn’t see any complaints about his effort on the defensive end, and he is tall, so he could develop into a passable defender. If he does that and improves as an outside shooter, he’s either a huge PG or a strong wing creator.

Ziaire Williams, the 16th pick in our draft and 10th pick IRL is a 6’9” wing with a 6’11” wingspan with a pretty slight build. He will be 20 in September. He showed flashes, but overall did not have a great freshman season at Stanford. Despite that, there seems to be widespread agreement that he’s an exceptionally skilled player on both sides of the ball. The primary question raised about Williams is whether he can add enough strength and mass to compete at the NBA level. If he can, he has the skill to be an All-Star caliber player. I would expect him to spend a lot of time in the G League.

Jaden Springer, the 18th pick in our draft and 28th pick IRL, is a 6’4” shooting guard with a 6’7.75” wingspan, hard-working, terrific, and quick on-ball defender, who shot over 40% from 3pt on low volume and 81% from the line. Because of the low volume, I’m leaning more on the FT% than the 3pt%. He’s also very young, doesn’t turn 19 until nearly October. He’ll have to get much better at getting a good shot off the dribble, but if he does that (obviously easier said than done, but again, he is young) and proves the 3pt% is not a mirage, he could be something.

Joshua Primo, the 26th pick in our draft and 12th pick IRL, is a 6’6” wing with a 6’9.25” wingspan who does not turn 19 until Christmas Eve. He is either the youngest or second-youngest player in the whole draft. He started 19 games for a very good Alabama team, shot 38.1% from 3pt on 113 attempts, and hit 75% from the line. For Alabama, he played as a switchable defender with a pretty good handle. He made the US U19 team as a 16-year-old. He also played notably well at the NBA Combine given he was the youngest player there. I expect him to spend a lot of time in the G League, but he has a history of reaching the next level before anyone expects.

Any of these guys could crap out, but all of them are young, have good size, have decent to excellent BB IQs, have already at least one NBA caliber skill, play hard on the defensive end, and are universally described as high-character guys who work really hard. That seems to give each of them enough ceiling that he could become an All-Star. Worth a shot. I was able to get them on average 3 picks after they were picked in real life, so from that perspective at least the draft was a success.
   3549. tshipman Posted: July 31, 2021 at 05:19 PM (#6031936)
Are we doing post-draft write-ups?

Sacramento Kings

Look, the Kings are just an absolute #### show. They are the worst run team of the last 15 years and it isn't even that close. They continually mis-identify where they are in the success cycle, draft the wrong guys for dumb reasons, and chase the 8th seed with disastrous results. So even though they finished with 31 wins (35 win pace in a normal year), and in real life are talking about a playoff push, I took a different approach.

On the roster right now, there is basically just one guy that even has a shot at being a top 3 guy on a playoff team, and that's Haliburton. I evaluate Haliburton as a PG, and I want to give him all he can eat. I view him as a plus shooting prospect, an above average finisher, and a good fit next to just about every other type of star player. I am not sure if he's capable of being the center of an efficient offense, but I think there's a chance, so we're going to find out.

For that reason, my priority was shipping out Fox. I was open to offers for Haliburton because the Kings are too bad to not listen on stuff, but I wanted to move Fox. Picking up Barrett + a pick was better than I thought I would do. I don't really think Barrett is all that great, but he did improve dramatically this year. The Knicks last year were frequently not a very well-spaced team, and Barrett had to create most of his own buckets. I think there's some upside there for him to keep growing.

I don't know that Haliburton/Barrett is the back court of the future, but it's worth seeing how they fit. I think both would retain value if I wanted to move them, and I think Haliburton has a shot of having a breakout season in his second year. I wanted to deal Buddy for something, but couldn't get a deal done. He'll probably be traded at the deadline for some seconds. We also have Tre Mann (#39 overall, and #18 IRL), who will get backup PG minutes.

In the front court, I have one decent player, Harrison Barnes, plus Richaun Holmes who requires a decision. I'm fine with keeping Barnes. It's good to have a few trusted vets on a young team like this. I drafted Sengun at #9 overall (went #16 in real life), and I actually think he's a good fit with Barnes. I'm probably letting Holmes go. I want to see Sengun take the majority of the minutes at starting C, with Marvin Bagley as the primary backup. The Kings were actually the second worst rebounding team last year, so I think they can improve on defense by having a better rebounder and just playing Bagley less. I'm also adding Kevon Looney and Eric Paschall as backup bigs. If either of them look like they can play, I'll just bench Bagley.

At the wing, there is not a lot there. We have our other first round pick, Jalen Johnson (#19 in our exercise, 20th IRL), who we can start at the wing. We have a couple of weird guys on the roster (Robert Woodard II and Jahmi'us Ramsay) who are going to get the rest of the minutes. I don't think either of those guys are very good, but if Robert Woodard figures out how to shoot maybe he could be okay. Woodard is at least a remarkable rebounder for a wing.

After my draft and GM performance, Sacramento is not a good team.
PG: Haliburton/Mann
SG: RJ Barrett/Buddy Hield
SF: Jalen Johnson/Robert Woodward
PF: Harrison Barnes/Eric Paschall
C: Alperen Sengun/Kevon Looney/Bagley (until I trade his ass)

We have three or four guys who might be something. I rank them in this order: Haliburton->Barrett->Sengun-->Jalen Johnson. We have a team of terrible defenders, plus Harrison Barnes (Maybe Barrett is average-ish).

What I like about this team is that the whole team can pass. Most of the team has some kind of track record for shooting. We should improve on the defensive glass. We improved on the defensive glass. Plus, if none of these guys pops, we can go FULL TANK really easily.

Los Angeles will fall into the ocean as the water rises due to global warming. This will result in Russell Westbrook finally being able to throw a ball into the ocean, justifying his decision to freeze out Thomas and the other guards on the Lakers.

A guy posted this at a Lakers blog:

And for all the uproar about the spacing limitations that come with adding a player with Westbrook’s shooting resume (which is fair), there is also no denying the benefits of his ability to put pressure at the rim. That skill was a staple of the Lakers’ recent championship, and for the Bucks this year as well. It’s also an area where arguably no guard is better than Westbrook.

According to the Bball-Index, last season Westbrook ranked in the 99th percentile in their database when it came to “getting to the rim rating,” the 99th percentile in box creation (an estimate of open shots carved out for teammates by drawing defensive attention) and the 99th percentile in “high value assists” (3PT, rim, free-throws).

I am pretty sure that James and Davis did not look up Westbrook's percentile rankings at BBI, but this did give me a little window, with a metric, that I think shows how James and Davis see it. Fans with a saber bent and analyst types conceptualize James teams in terms of James attacking the defense the way that only he can, and then shooters being spaced around to capitalize when he gives the ball up, with one big there at times to convert inside. James is conceptualizing it as needing another guy who is really good at attacking the D, so that he (James) can rest more, on and off court, and now someone else will be around to run the break, attack the rim, and set up Davis. And James probably figures that Caruso and a couple of cheap guys will make enough 3s to make it work. Not saying that it will work, but I think that this basic metric shows what James and Davis were thinking.

The other piece, I think, is cultural. Whatever fans and analysts think of him and his game, Westbrook is in the club. He's a star. I think James is big on that.

Rumors! WAS and SAC, shockingly, have 0 interest in a Schroder S and T, so Pelinka is supposedly working the phone trying to expand the deal and get a shooter before it has to be finalized on 8/6. Maybe @NBAzones had it right after all.

I remain a Lonzo Ball supporter in many respects, and I tend to think that the team that gets him will end up feeling pretty good about it.

Came here to post this too. There's various ways it could happen (and ways the Bulls can still keep Thad to do it), and rumors the Pels won't match an offer sheet, but he's also a really good fit with the Bulls.

Woj: "The Heat's decision to pick up the $19.4M option on Goran Dragic's deal is a possible precursor in utilizing him as part of a potential sign-and-trade with Toronto for Kyle Lowry, sources tell ESPN."

Edit: Heat also declined the team option on Iguodala. Lowe also talking up Lowry to the Heat as a possibility, citing unnamed sources. Second edit: Marc Stein adds, "Miami's status as the favorite to land Kyle Lowry was only enhanced by the decision to pick up Goran Dragic's option for next season, league sources say."

Lowry's playoff numbers the second half of his career are pretty good. First half was very weak, but he's had 4 solid to very good post-seasons. I think he's put that narrative to bed.

I agree that Chris Paul's agelessness and Phoenix's run is going to get him, but also Conley and Lowry paid. Even Milwaukee's Holiday trade, to an extent. I think a lot of teams are going to view them as one guy like that away.

Also the ability to move huge (even overpaid) contracts for guys who are good or were recently good seems to be as easy as ever, despite more analytics in the game.

Lowry fits Butler's timeline well enough. Ideally you'd want someone in age between Butler and Adebayo, but those aren't generally available on the market and aren't this year. But I don't think Bam, Butler, Lowry, and Duncan Robinson and a bunch of scrubs is enough. Maybe they can get something worthwhile for Herro?
   3568. tshipman Posted: August 01, 2021 at 07:39 PM (#6032071)
Imagine knowing that Chris Paul would be opting out of the last year of that deal. 44 million guaranteed, and he's only opting out because he knows he can get more. That is some wild stuff.

Edit:

Yup, I think this is a huge factor. Every FO in the NBA has amnesia. These contracts are terrible gambles and at least one and probably all of these teams are going to regret it.

I've been curious what Graham would get - the high volume three point shooting and solid playmaking has value, though he's also small, doesn't defend well, or offer much inside the arc. (That doesn't sound great, but he's a solid enough player.)

Ha, fair. I just look at Lonzo and see a guy who has turned into a good shooter, is a very good passer and perimeter defender, and also seems totally selfless and content to not be the guy, and think he's basically the perfect point guard to play with Zion? I mean yes, if you can upgrade from him to the very top tier of point guards, absolutely, but for Devonte Graham?

You're below average at every position, but to make up for that you're also terrible at help and point of attack defense.

Plus you have a new coach with zero track record or history, so you have that going for you.
   3591. spivey 2 Posted: August 02, 2021 at 01:23 PM (#6032189)
New Orleans was consistently in the bottom 3rd of team defense for the entirety of AD and Holiday's time together there. When you see how amazing each of them have been on defense after leaving, it's really something.

Ramona Shelbourne with a juicy piece of gossip today.

RUSSELL WESTBROOK IS many things as a basketball player -- aggressive, explosive, inefficient -- but most of all he is decisive. A man of action, the saying goes. When there is no shot, he will create one. When there is no path to the basket, he will find one -- through sheer force of will or chutzpah.

So in the summer of 2019, while the rest of the NBA world fretted over who reigning NBA Finals MVP Kawhi Leonard would choose between the Toronto Raptors and his hometown Los Angeles Lakers or LA Clippers, Westbrook was coming up with a plan to collaborate with him on a homecoming.

Westbrook had become a father of three the previous November, and while he'd made a home and carved a Hall of Fame legacy in Oklahoma City, the chance to live and play in Los Angeles, where grandparents and his large extended family and friends could visit every day, held deep appeal.

Teaming up with Leonard would be the fastest way there, so he placed the call, according to multiple sources. But Leonard didn't just take the call as one native son of Los Angeles to another, ponder it and file it away.

He used it.

According to multiple sources, Leonard then called Westbrook's teammate in Oklahoma City, Paul George, and told him he'd rather team up with him on a homecoming.

Looks like that's next year according to basketball-reference. I think this is why they dealt Shamet and aren't planning to retain Dinwiddie. Harden won't have full Bird Rights, and Irving is probably a fringe regular season all-NBA player, so may not be eligible for the supermax. He didn't make all-NBA in 2019-20, so he'd have to get it next year to be eligible.

oh, mock draft wrap up for the 57ix6r5:

PHI gets Beal for Ben Simmons, PHI’s 2023 FRP, 2024 first round pick swap, and 2027 FRP “with very light protection”
28. Philadelphia (Stiggles)-Miles McBride
50. Philadelphia (Stiggles)-Luke Garza

simmons deal: something had to be done. i'm not too happy about it, but whatever.

not too happy about the draft, either. it's fine, but it's not exciting.

depth chart coming out of this (starters in BOLD):
G: maxey, beal, curry, milton, hill, mcbride
W: thybulle, tharris, joe
B: embiid, reed, garza

free agents: danny green, dwightmare, korkmaz, tolliver, scott

resigning danny green seems like a priority, but him returning is not up the sixers.
i've had enough of the dwightmare. it went a lot less terribly than i expected, but i would rather not push my luck with that.
korkmaz will be a sixers for the next 48 years. i wouldn't want to go back to turkey if i was him, either.
tolliver and scott are throwaways.

priorities in free agency:
1: they gotta beef up on the wings.
2: backup center needs work. nerlens noel is priced out of their range now, right? i guess the dwightmare might still be the best option here. ugh.

i am not liking this direction. but maybe i'm wrong.
