I estimate there are maybe 10-12 Primates left on this site, and they all post in the NBA thread.

No, I don't think Caruso is a S and T.

Ooooof, losing Caruso is a huge deal.

It's incredibly hard to find defense + shooting on the bargain basement market. You can get one or the other typically, but not both.

Also, reports indicate that this was the presentation that made Caruso agree to sign.

graham to the pelicans (he got 4/47) doesn't surprise me but getting a first (their own '22, lotto protected)? yeah, weird.

to be fair, i match at that price if i am charlotte as well but still.

Not a terrible pickup for the Pels, I mean. But that seems expensive?

After shitting on David Griffin, I will say that the sign and trade for Satoransky and Garrett Temple is a nice piece of work.

And then just after I complimented him, he absolutely shits the bed with that Graham deal.

The Graham-Ball-Markkanen S/T rumor seemed a lot better for New Orleans than what actually happened.

Having a competent front office make these types of moves is gonna take some getting used to (they still boned and overpaid for Vuc).

They're gonna get something for Lauri in a S/T, too. Or I'd assume. They're gonna be decent next year. Still not seeing a high ceiling here, but they'll be fun to watch.

I don't know if they'll keep Coby, maybe have to until he's healthy. But this team has been almost completely ungarpaxed.

how is getting sato and temple in the ball deal good work?

projections for what graham would get were around/a bit north of that (for example, bobby marks guessed 12-14m per year) and i thought that was about right.

Satoransky and Temple might be more value for the 2022 Pelicans than Lonzo.
3715. Der-K's emotional investment is way up Posted: August 02, 2021 at 09:40 PM (#6032395)
because lonzo will play for the bulls, yes. otherwise, no.

temple will be 35 next year and hasn't topped 34.1% from three in the last three seasons. solid defender, but unexceptional on that end (because he's old now). doesn't get to the line. low mistakes, but no other strengths either. better players are available for less than 3/15.
i like sato, always have. he's gonna make 10 mil to be ... okay. very good ft shooter, but doesn't penetrate at all. blah defender but can be blah at three spots. ok rebounder. smart passer but too conservative.
neither of these 2 are worth what they'll be paid this year. he'll be 30.

conversely, lonzo is actually an above average player. he has real weaknesses, no question, but the best rebounder of the three, the best three point shooter of the three, the best scorer of the three (ball is not a scorer), the best defender of the three. he's also going to be 24 next year.
   3716. Willard Baseball Posted: August 02, 2021 at 09:47 PM (#6032396)
Is TShipman just trolling? There is no way he believes half the stuff he posts. I cannot think of anything Sato/Temple does better than Lonzo. Temple is also old.

   3717. Willard Baseball Posted: August 02, 2021 at 09:49 PM (#6032398)
He also said that he would never take a post in lottery, then took a post in lottery, and thinks Jarrett Allen at 5/100 is reasonable. This all has to be an act.
   3718. jmurph Posted: August 02, 2021 at 09:50 PM (#6032399)
Dinwiddie, DeRozan, Schroder, Mills, Jackson and more still out there. Some solid guys are about to get #### salaries somewhere.
   3719. asinwreck Posted: August 02, 2021 at 09:52 PM (#6032400)
Temple is *fantastic* in the locker room, so maybe DG thinks he'll make Zion happy.
3720. Moses Taylor hashes out the rumpus Posted: August 02, 2021 at 09:53 PM (#6032401)
There were rumors earlier today the Bulls were after DeRozan. Not sure if that's still the case after Caruso.
   3721. tshipman Posted: August 02, 2021 at 09:57 PM (#6032402)
I think if you accept Lonzo being gone as fait accompli, Satoransky is one of the best fits next to Zion that you're going to get under 20 million. Significantly better than Graham, for instance.
   3722. jmurph Posted: August 02, 2021 at 09:57 PM (#6032403)

From the Athletic:
Sam Amick: The Lakers did a very puzzling thing today, and only time will tell if they pay a price for it in their pursuit of an 18th championship. When faced with the prospect of losing Alex Caruso, the 27-year-old guard whose Bird rights they carried and could thus pay whatever they wanted, they didn't put up any free-agency fight en route to him agreeing to a four-year, $37 million deal with Chicago. According to a source with knowledge of the situation, Caruso's camp went back to the Lakers after the Bulls made their offer and were told that there would be no counter.
Hard dislike.

Would love Patty Mills as a backup PG for the taxpayer MLE if Milwaukee still has it. I also just always underestimate the FA and in particular PG FA market. I was wondering a couple of weeks ago if Cory Joseph was still in the NBA. He's been a solid player, but not sure he is worth 2 years.

Fine letting Tucker walk, even getting I think it was a salary protected slot. Will always love him because he helped bring a championship and a Texas alum, but his lack of shooting had just gotten too bad, and was only getting worse.

My understanding is Zion wanted Ball back, and they were friends. You can't let that keep you from making the best decisions to run the team, but I think in 2 years we look back at the last two offseasons as the ones that sealed Zion Williamson asking out. Their team makes just as little sense now as it did last year with Bledsoe and Adams.

I am a huge Lonzo fan, but Satoransky is significantly more efficient.

Career TS%: 57.5% (Sato), 50.4% Lonzo
2021 TS%: 61.4% (Sato), 55.1% Lonzo

Lonzo has never even been average on true shooting.

he would never take a post in lottery, then took a post in lottery, and thinks Jarrett Allen at 5/100 is reasonable.

My only comment on the Jarrett Allen contract literally mentioned he shouldn't make more than Capela.

oh sato is a more efficient shooter, i'll agree to that. he plays very low mistake basketball (unless you count not shooting more or passing more aggressively an error of omission).

Yes. Satoransky is a lower risk player in general. If you think your coaching staff can unlock his aggression, or you think playing next to Zion will make him bomb away, or whatever, then awesome.

Lonzo is incredibly risky to pay 20 million + to. If his 3p shot isn't there, he's unplayable. He gets injured a lot. He is a PG who relies on other people to create in the half court.
   3735. Willard Baseball Posted: August 02, 2021 at 10:11 PM (#6032419)
He is more efficient because he never, ever shoots. Down the stretch, he was playing less than 20 minutes a game.

He is about to turn 30 years old.

In his entire career he has scored 20 points 6x...and never did last year. He had two games of 5+ assists last year. He is a hider.

Bazemore to the Lakers for a year
   3737. Willard Baseball Posted: August 02, 2021 at 10:14 PM (#6032421)
Lonzo has taken 6+ 3s a game and 8+ 3s a game the past two years and shot over 37% from 3.

He has played 3 fewer games the past two seasons than Sato.
3738. Der-K's emotional investment is way up Posted: August 02, 2021 at 10:15 PM (#6032422)
In the past, I held out hope that Sato would get more aggressive over time - he’s more aggressive in international play after all. I’ve given up on that dream.

If ball’s three point shot goes away, he’s still playable just woefully overpaid. Otoh, that’s two straight years of high volume three point shooting at a solid clip - we can assume that most of the improvement is real at this point. Also, he’s getting paid that much because he could further improve. Maybe even by 2022.
--
Like Sato, Graham is pretty good at avoiding turnovers (as is Temple though he should be in that role). Wonder if that's a focus point for their FO.
   3739. jmurph Posted: August 02, 2021 at 10:18 PM (#6032423)
So who is taking OKC’s money in order to be traded in a year? Dinwiddie?
   3740. spivey 2 Posted: August 02, 2021 at 10:20 PM (#6032424)
There's a whole hell of a lot of teams that don't need or even want their PG to be the primary ball handler. Ball's shooting, size, rebounding, and all around flexibility has him fit fine at the 2 as well.

I seriously doubted the shot, but he's shot 37% back to back years on very high volume. 850 attempts combined between the last two years. FT% is way up in that time, too, over his first two years.

I think Caruso, Ball, and Lavine is a really fun (and pretty good) guard rotation. That said, I do agree that Ball is paid at basically the max I'd want to give him. Him and Hart I don't think are supposed to be great defenders, but they seemed like two of their better guard/wing defenders, and the rest of the stuff feels like rearranging deck chairs on the Titantic. Count me among those who like Satoransky, but probably mostly as a bench guy you're happy to co-lead the 2nd unit offense and get about 25 min/game.

Sounds like PJ definitely got lowballed by Milwaukee. But, tbh, I don't think he's worth 2/15, and I think he's about to hit the pure toast level that Iguodala did when he moved to Miami. Watching him pass up corner 3 after corner 3, he may have already hit it. Team will need another physical wing, but so it goes.

Porter could be a steal, but he has played 42 games total the last two years.

The Caruso thing has gotten pretty heated in CyberLakerland. As I have learned a bit more about the tax implications, I see that this may just have been Jeannie telling Pelinka that 4/37 was not doable and that there is no alternative move that includes letting Caruso walk. But I am not going to pass judgment yet.

Lakers have picked up Wayne Ellington, Bazemore and Trevor Ariza, all for 1 year deals, presumably at the minimum.

Waiving George Hill isn't crazy considering how much he struggled last season. It's also not surprising considering the potential tax savings the Sixers could get. But he also was a mid-level salary that could've been used in trades. All eyes on Danny Green now.
Kyle Neubeck @KyleNeubeck
Hill getting waived wouldn't a shocker based on how he played, but he was one of the few guys they might have had to use as a potential salary matcher, so that's an eyebrow raiser

Given that I am a huge Gasols Stan, I would be ok with a Spain W as well.

This lineup for Spain in the 4th quarter is kind of wild:

Rubio/Abrines/Sergio Llull/Sergio Rodriguez/Usman Garuba.

I think Garuba is the center?

They're margin moves, but I like the resign of Portis, letting Tucker walk for that amount of money, Ojeleye at the minimum, and still got the taxpayer MLE. Satoransky is actually a guy who would have fit nicely into that.

Yeah all the numbers given out by Miami last night suggest Riley must be retiring soon, but I think they pretty clearly got better. I still would have the Nets and Bucks comfortably ahead of them, but could easily see them around 3 or so depending on what the Sixers do.
   3781. jmurph Posted: August 03, 2021 at 09:18 AM (#6032486)
I'm probably giving them too much of the benefit of the doubt, but is San Antonio a possible Simmons destination? Or Collins, as I mentioned last night? Nate Duncan posted what looked like up to date numbers even after McDermott and Zach Collins and they still looked to have I think $36 million in space.
   3782. spivey 2 Posted: August 03, 2021 at 09:46 AM (#6032490)
Rumor was San Antonio reached out on Simmons a week or two ago and was quoted a price of a young player + 3-4 FRPs + a few pick swaps. Spurs are a bit of a mess, and need to consolidate, but Simmons is worth nowhere near that.

Miami. They'll be ultra physical in the playoffs. If Lowry is still a borderline allstar, and if they stay healthy, they'll be good. But Lowry is getting old, Butler has missed some games in recent years, so I'm not sure they'll be regular season better than Atlanta or Philly though (contingent on what they get back for Simmons). They also have basically no shooting if Duncan Robinson were to miss time. They had a negative SRS last year, so they have a pretty long way to go to get to #3. They also are going to lose Dragic, Nunn, and Achiuwa. None great players, but Nunn and Achiuwa will probably be better than their replacements.

dunn - i wouldn't have him on my team, as he's a domestic abuser, but he's likely to be a fa steal for somebody

This is fair. I don't think I'd currently have Miami in the top tier of contenders. But I think 3 is within the realm of the possible- I'd currently expect the Sixers and Knicks to regress and no one behind them, at this point, has done anything to jump up too far. Atlanta is still there, yeah.

It's too early for all this obviously, just thinking it through.

Rudy Gay to the Jazz.

Utah gets Rudy Gay for the taxpayer MLE. Like that deal for them. He's old, but continues to be quietly good.

Sounds like he shot 42% from 3 in Turkey last year. As Hollinger tweeted, if he can shoot the 3 ok, he's an NBA player.
   3791. DCA Posted: August 03, 2021 at 12:42 PM (#6032529)
I would have liked Bjelica for GSW last year in the Klay DPE (which ended up going unused). Good fit.

Drummond to the Sixers. Good career move for him, Embiid can't embarrass him in games anymore (just in practice).

Drummond should be better than Howard for Philadelphia.

why would drummond do that for the minimum? if it's to ring chase, aren't there better options?

dekker: turkey, i'm guessing. pass on this dude.
related: i was asked "if mo wagner is questionable (along these related lines), is franz?" dunno?

james johnson to brk. i've been a johnson fan/apologist but that ship has sailed, right?
hood to toronto: okay gamble, i guess - do we have a sense of what his true talent is?
bruce brown took his qo - i like it

Rodney Hood is going to Milwaukee, not Toronto. I'm whatever on it. Actually think Nwora is more likely to make an impact than Hood, but, Hood is an ok vet min guy. Can score in a couple different ways.

Milwaukee still has the TP-MLE. Don't have a great sense who all is available. Sounds like Danny Green and Mills are though. Would be happy with either.
