NBA 2021 Playoffs+ thread

I estimate there are maybe 10-12 Primates left on this site, and they all post in the NBA thread.

Doc Rivers on Ben Simmons: “I’m assuming he’s going to play, but who knows.”

i know i shouldn't feel this way, but i just really love that this is happening.

It is a Hell of a thing, yeah.

As I speculated on the pod with @DannyLeroux today, it appears based on reporting by @ramonashelburne that the delay in Ben Simmons passing health & safety protocols is due to not being vaccinated.

This Simmons #### is the gift that keeps giving.

Zion Williamson is getting his foot scanned to see how it is healing from the surgery he quietly had during the offseason, and has no timeline for return with the season a week away. I was hoping this foot injury was not a big deal, but it seems like it may be a real thing.

embiid missed 2 full seasons because of a broken foot. ben simmons missed his first rookie season because he had a foot.

Tonight's Dallas-Charlotte game was something. Porzingis dominated, Doris Burke proved capable of filling time for just about the entire game, and the Mavs won by 68.

That exhibition was followed by Game 2 of the WNBA Finals, going from the ridiculous to the sublime on ESPN. Tied up at the half.

Tied up at the end of regulation.

That was a real grind of a game.

I think we can go ahead and put to bed the "Kyrie is smart" "Kyrie is a thoughtful guy" stuff now!

It's Oden/Durant all over again. Heck, Morant even rhymes with Durant.

What would New Orleans need to add to Ingram to get Ben Simmons? Is Philly interested at all in an Ingram type guy? Wouldn't Simmons/Zion (in theory) complement each other well...Simmons guards and provides no spacing...Zion guards no one but doesn't need spacing. Can your two best players both be PF on offense?

Nothing? But I don't think Zion and Simmons would fit particularly well together, so I suspect New Orleans wouldn't be interested anyway.

In other news, 538's model thinks the Lakers are going to compete in the play-in tournament again.

The standings in both conferences are really something.

Yeah, it is starting to get a little of that vibe. Of course, Oden never showed anything near the level that Zion already has. But this foot thing, with his size and athleticism, plus how NO is talking about it, is extremely concerning.
4919. Moses Taylor loves a good maim Posted: October 14, 2021 at 10:21 AM (#6046256)
How heavily does that 538 model rate last year's playoff results?
4920. Mellow Mouse, Benevolent Space Tyrant Posted: October 14, 2021 at 10:40 AM (#6046258)
Those 538 results are silly.
4921. tshipman (The Viscount of Variance) Posted: October 14, 2021 at 11:15 AM (#6046265)
538 has #### results every year. Not sure why anyone would take it seriously.

I guess we should probably post our predictions, eventually?
   4923. jmurph Posted: October 14, 2021 at 11:34 AM (#6046270)
I think we generally wait for Moses to post a new thread because the rest of us are too lazy?
4924. Moses Taylor loves a good maim Posted: October 14, 2021 at 11:45 AM (#6046277)
Ok, I'll do a new thread today.

because it's 538. it's an established brand that is highly respected for its statistical expertise.

the question i have is why they let someone put out that pile of garbage, year after year, when they could just not.

I think Nate Silver wrote RAPTOR.

So I created and posted a new thread (I still have a set of keys to a few of the sections here), but that was 2 hours ago and it's still not showing up. In the control panel it shows as open. I keep refreshing, but still not there yet. Maybe it'll pop up at some point. When it does, I'll link it here.

not unusual for there to be a significant lag in a new thread showing up, no?

538: i've got a screed in me regarding raptor but it's not fully formed yet. one thing to note - what it is now is kinda different from what it started as, in terms of what's valued.

Yes. 538 is very good at getting people to cite their numbers. It's the only thing they're good at.

Here we are, new thread.

Submitting items, sure. But for me to directly post? No, and definitely not 24 hours. So I just deleted it and did a new one.
