Michael Cerami @Michael_Cerami May 30

The Cubs are heading to St. Louis this weekend.

The last time these two teams met on May 3rd, the Cardinals (20-11) were leading the NL Central by 2.5 games, while the Cubs (16-12) were still 3.0 games back.

Since then ...
Cubs: 15-11 (1st place)
Cardinals: 6-17 (4th pace)

I guess CFB was right: don't look at the standings before the ASB.

yep, the Cyclones have special uniforms for Seinfeld Night on July 13.

the bobbleheads, no kidding, are Lloyd Braun and The Maestro.

Blue Jays hitters are collectively hitting worse than replacement level, according to both metrics of wins above replacement.

As a bonus, Edwin Jackson (0-2, 9.00ERA) takes the mound in Colorado tonight.
   7. Zonk Has Two Faces, Both Laughing Posted: May 31, 2019 at 04:56 PM (#5847177)
Jackson either needs to get his act together quickly so he can be traded to someone new or continue to suck bad enough to get cut and latch on elsewhere.

The odds are moving towards return engagements at this point but just scanning the standings - it looks like sucking bad might be the better option such that either the Giants or Royals take a why not chance.

Incidentally, Jackson's 0-2 performance with Toronto gives him as many bbref batting runs as Vlad Jr's 116 PA.

Hilarious game in Baltimore: Giants with 5 in the top of the 1st; Orioles come back with 6 in the bottom of the 1st.

Shocker in NY: The Yanks got to sale for 3 in the 3rd to take a 3-1 lead.
   12. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: May 31, 2019 at 08:25 PM (#5847214)
I'm shocked the Cubs couldn't cash in on a bases loaded situation.
   13. ERROR---Jolly Old St. Nick Posted: May 31, 2019 at 08:39 PM (#5847216)
WHAT A ####### PICKOFF THROW BY SANCHEZ!!!! And with the bases loaded and the fearsome Benintendi at bat, no less.

Oh great, the Giants lost 8:6 in Baltimore.

Oh wait, it's the 4th inning. My bad.

LeMahieu solo HR makes it 4-1 Yankees.

Maybe Sale needs a hot new girlfriend. It helped Big Papi !

huh, yu darvish picks today to decided he's still good.

i'm not sure i'm going to make it through this game, just on general angst, ennui and weltschmerz.

Fowler has a tendency to do bad evened up by doing something stupid.
   20. cardsfanboy Posted: May 31, 2019 at 09:49 PM (#5847226)
even after this month of lackadaisacal baseball where it's clear nobody on this ####### team cares one bit about the game, the announcers still find a way to talk about how great of a manager Shildt is....

Please give examples instead of saying "the team hustled with him in August of last year."....
   21. snowles Posted: May 31, 2019 at 09:54 PM (#5847228)
Well it looks like Edwin Jackson is going to depart his day in Colorado with an even worse ERA than the 9.00 he came in with. 9 earned in 2.1IP, the runner on second is his.

Update: and he’s still out there pitching....
   22. snowles Posted: May 31, 2019 at 09:57 PM (#5847229)
And there’s the 10th run. Mercifully Jackson has been removed, though the guy on second is his. I wouldn’t be surprised if Jackson retires tonight.

Though knowing the Jays he’ll get at least 6 more starts.
   23. ERROR---Jolly Old St. Nick Posted: May 31, 2019 at 09:59 PM (#5847230)
Yanks rock Sox, Twins nip Rays less than a minute earlier, Red Sox 9 back in the loss column. All's right in the world.
   24. The Yankee Clapper Posted: May 31, 2019 at 10:01 PM (#5847231)
Chapman gets the save, and the Yankees lead the Red Sox in the All-Important Loss Column by 9 games. 45,556 at the Stadium.

so somehow the Brewers are going to win?

just kidding of course, this game is just so 'nothing' going on right now.

I'm starting to think Drew Pomeranz isn't a major league pitcher anymore.

I'm not watching, but following along on gameday, it's seemed like a mostly dull affair with neither team really taking advantage of the handful of scoring opportunities.
   29. cardsfanboy Posted: May 31, 2019 at 10:42 PM (#5847240)
Maybe it's the Blues right now... but I just can't get into this team... they just seem so clearly lack of effort or caring that it's just not enjoyable, factor in with pretty much the most incompetent tactical managing we've had in St Louis since Vern Rapp, and it's just annoying to watch. I keep hoping Shildt gets better, but even on his best days he's 10 levels below Herzog who was at best an average tactical manager... and it's clear he doesn't even know this, unlike with Matheny who kept trying to improve his tactics.

Basically Shildt is Red Schoendist(another incompetent tactical manager) but without the same level of professionalism/quality among his players.
   30. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: May 31, 2019 at 10:57 PM (#5847242)
Cubs look like they'll never score again, so maybe the Cardinals can put them out of their misery before extras are necessary.
   31. cardsfanboy Posted: May 31, 2019 at 11:03 PM (#5847244)
This stadium looks empty... there can't be much more than 30,000 fans there... just not much interest in this team right now.
   32. phredbird Posted: May 31, 2019 at 11:05 PM (#5847245)

CAN'T ANYBODY PLAY THIS STINKIN' GAME?

YOUR 2019 AL MVP Matt Chapman puts the A's up on the Astros, 2-0 through three innings.

Also, with the bizarro injury to Correa, Alex Bregman is playing SS for the 'Stros.

2-for-28 with RISP over the last four games.

Just freaking end it.

What a waste of Montgomery.
   37. cardsfanboy Posted: May 31, 2019 at 11:33 PM (#5847252)
bad call by the ump, but I'll take it for now.. but Bader should have been out on that pitch.
   38. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: May 31, 2019 at 11:34 PM (#5847253)
And to bring in a guy who has no idea where the ball is going, no less.

Got any lefties in the pen for Carpenter, Joe? haha
   40. phredbird Posted: May 31, 2019 at 11:36 PM (#5847255)

maples walks gyorko on 4 bad pitches, but boy he got screwed on that last pitch to bader.

laz diaz is the home plate ump, i think that explains a lot about the calls tonight.
   41. cardsfanboy Posted: May 31, 2019 at 11:36 PM (#5847256)
i'm sensing a walk off walk about to happen.

Gameday said that was a strike.
   45. cardsfanboy Posted: May 31, 2019 at 11:39 PM (#5847260)
everyone watching the game, including the Cardinal announcers says it was a strike. with the exception of laz diaz.
   46. greenback slays lewks Posted: May 31, 2019 at 11:39 PM (#5847262)
Yay. Matt Carpenter did something positive.
   47. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: May 31, 2019 at 11:39 PM (#5847263)
Oh well.

If you can only muster a run over 10 innings and that's via a sac fly by your pitcher, you deserve to lose.
   48. phredbird Posted: May 31, 2019 at 11:39 PM (#5847264)

oh heavens, i honestly can not believe we won this game.

   49. cardsfanboy Posted: May 31, 2019 at 11:40 PM (#5847265)
nice swing by Carpenter... taking full advantage of the outfield defense alignment.

You haven't paid attention to the Cubs for the last week. The offense is pathetic. That first inning summed it all up: Get runners on base and squander.
   51. cardsfanboy Posted: May 31, 2019 at 11:41 PM (#5847267)
sadly a game like this, which is normally a very positive thing, just doesn't feel that positive... yes it's a win etc.... but it was a game in which neither team was trying to win.
   52. Bote Man Posted: May 31, 2019 at 11:41 PM (#5847268)
That was a cookie from Cishek and I can't believe Carpenter didn't hit that over the Missississippippi.

Neither pitching staff deserved to lose. And neither offense really deserved to win. Although the Cardinals put together a nice rally there in the 10th.
   54. cardsfanboy Posted: May 31, 2019 at 11:42 PM (#5847270)
I'm enjoying the interview with Carpenter though... that was fun.

Right, the pitching was fine. The offense is a mess right now.
   56. cardsfanboy Posted: May 31, 2019 at 11:43 PM (#5847272)
first back to back wins for the Cardinals since May first... that gives you an idea of how bad May was for this team.
   57. cardsfanboy Posted: May 31, 2019 at 11:45 PM (#5847273)
just curious if we have either a nhl off topic thread going on or an nba thread(i don't care about the latter, but usually those are on the side)
   58. Howie Menckel Posted: May 31, 2019 at 11:52 PM (#5847276)
this is sad. Figueroa was ok on TV. he got demoted and....

"Mets TV analyst Nelson Figueroa has been fired from his job with SNY, The New York Post has learned.

Figueroa was let go Friday morning after he showed up Thursday in what was described by sources as a state not fit to work. Figueroa reportedly demanded to still appear on SNY’s evening program, “Baseball Night in New York,” but was not permitted to appear.

An SNY spokeswoman confirmed that Figueroa is no longer working at the network. She declined to provide further details."

That ballboy (man) should be ejected!!!111!!
   62. Howie Menckel Posted: June 01, 2019 at 12:19 AM (#5847283)
just flipped onto that

Mets trail 4-3 in the 8th after blowing a 3-0 lead, looks like bags loaded, 2 out.

no third-base ump apparently due to medical reasons, and the lone remaining CarGo in MLB smacks one down the line. the 50-something ballman snags the hit well down the line. Mets get 2 runs and the lead - but do they get 3?

Chelsea will decide.
   63. Bote Man Posted: June 01, 2019 at 12:22 AM (#5847284)
HP umpire Jim Wolf had been hit by a ball earlier and left the game, so they're operating with only 3 umpires, that's why they didn't have the usual fair/foul ruling. I have no idea why the ballgeezer didn't just get out of the way, but there it is. Mets go ahead 5-4 in the 8th. Wow.
