New York Yankees acquire IF Rougned Odor in trade with Texas Rangers

The New York Yankees have acquired infielder Rougned Odor from the Texas Rangers.

The Rangers will receive minor league outfielders Antonio Cabello and Josh Stowers, with the Yankees also getting cash considerations in the deal.

Texas is expected to absorb almost the entirety of the $27 million owed to Odor, sources told ESPN’s Jeff Passan. He’s due $12 million this year, $12 million in 2022 and a $3 million buyout on a $13 million club option in 2023.

Is somebody hurt? Cuz this is weird otherwise. Odor is nobody's idea of a utility infielder having only ever played 2B in the majors. I know LeMahieu is flexible but shifting him around to get Odor in the lineup hardly seems ideal. I know Tyler Wade is nothing special but at least he's used to the role, can play SS OK and will be happy to get 4 PA a week. If Odor's willing to sit at AAA and the prospects are nothing to worry about then fine, nothing to see here.

Seems like a favor to the Rangers. Do these teams have a long history of good dealings?

I agree, but I also have no doubt Odor is going to post a 120 OPS+ or something this year with the Yankees.

Robo Rosenthal tweeted that Odor could actually give the Yankees a little bit of cap room if he remained on their 40 man roster until the end of the year.

If Texas is paying all the money, it's not much of a favor. Cabello is a 20-yo Venezuelan OF who put up a 600ish OPS in rookie ball 2 years ago. Stowers was an M's 2nd round pick who did OK at A- and A ball but is now 24. That's better than just releasing Odor but I assume the Yanks were worried another team would beat them to him. That just gets us back to my original question as it suggests the Yanks actually want Odor in the majors which seems odd to me.

The ARod gift should be enough to cover 50 years of return gifts.

No doubt. Or they will release him and he'll put up that 120 OPS+ for the Cards.

It appears that the Yankees prefer to have Odor, and use 3rd baseman Gio Urshela to back-up SS if rarely needed, rather than Tyler Wade who has options & no real bat as of yet. Not sure Odor will play much if everyone is healthy (when does that happen?), but the Yanks are short of left handed hitters these days, and Odor’s bat may play well at Yankee Stadium.

By adding Odor, Yankees realize small benefit in luxury-tax (CBT) payroll. Odor makes $12M cash. His CBT number is $8.25M. Money from Rangers will drop him to $0 in that calculation. So even if he replaces someone making minimum, he will save NYY small amount in CBT payroll.

I know he didn't do much in the spring, but if that was the plan, why not just take Derek Dietrich, who actually has some experience playing the corners along with 2B?

Weirder is the decision not to go with the headline: "Yankees pick up strange Odor; observers baffled"

The Rangers acquired the Yankees' 15th and 30th best prospects for $27 million. To balance out the trade for the Rangers, the Yankees took Rougned Odor.
