New York Yankees acquire reliever Clay Holmes from Pittsburgh Pirates for 2 minor league infielders

The New York Yankees, facing some important decisions with Friday’s trade deadline looming, on Monday acquired right-handed reliever Clay Holmes from the Pittsburgh Pirates for minor league infielders Diego Castillo and Hoy Park.

Holmes, 28, is 3-2 in 44 relief appearances with 44 strikeouts and 35 walks in 42 innings. He has held right-handed batters to a .173 average (17-for-98). Holmes is 5-7 with a 5.57 ERA over 91 games, including four starts, in four major league seasons.

Park, 25, appeared in one major league game, on July 16 against Boston. He is batting .307 with 10 doubles, 11 homers and 32 RBIs for Double-A Somerset and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

this is the worst RP I can ever remember being added near a trade deadline.

I mean, if the Rays got him (especially from the Pirates), ok, maybe they know something.

seems like a cruel tease to Yankees fans, who are desperate for a decent bullpen arm.

and PIT has closer RRodriguez 148 ERA+, Bednar 150 ERA+, and failed SP Stratton 161 ERA+ in their stable.

hell, they have ex-Yankees retread Shreve and his 209 ERA+ as well. none of these guys are "phenoms," either.

If you like playing in The Bronx
And finishing in fourth place

If you think you can help a team
Run by disciples of Bill James.

If you don't need support from Sanchez
The savage at the wrong corner of the plate

Then we are the team you looked for
Not the Pirates who are a disgrace.

July 21, 2003, all-star Mike Williams, he of the 6.27 ERA, is traded from the Pirates to the Phillies, who are chasing the NL wild card spot. The Phillies know that Williams can't be as bad as his ERA suggests, and they are proven correct, as he posts a 5.96 while going 0-4 over the remainder of the season with Philadelphia. That is the end of Williams in organized baseball.

And so I heard we had traded
To get some pitching relief

I guess ol' Cashman was listening
And got fed up with our grief

I saw who we had acquired
And I said, "Aw, it's you."

Then I turned my attention
Ahead to twenty twenty-two.

Huh ... Joe Borowski doesn't seem to have ever been traded at the deadline.

re Mike Williams: he was great in 1998 and good in 2000-02. the Pirates' total haul was 18 mediocre IP out of a reliever.

Holmes was NEVER good. this is his "career year" with an ERA+ of 84.

Williams might be the worst All-Star pitcher trading-deadline acquisition, though.

You can never have enough bad pitching.
