New York Yankees set to acquire Joey Gallo from Texas Rangers for six minor leaguers, sources say

The New York Yankees are finalizing a deal to acquire outfielder Joey Gallo from the Texas Rangers, sources told ESPN’s Jeff Passan on Wednesday night.

The deal is pending a medical review.

The Rangers will receive right-handers Glenn Otto and Randy Vasquez, second baseman Ezequiel Duran, shortstop Josh Smith, second baseman/outfielder Trevor Hauver and outfielder Everson Pereira from New York, sources told Passan.

Gallo was a late scratch from the Rangers’ lineup ahead of Wednesday night’s game against the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks, with speculation that a trade was in the works.

Quantity not quality here as Josh Smith is the highest-ranked at mlb.com at #14 on the Yanks.

Starting to look like the Cubs are missing the train this deadline -- which is OK if they weren't made any decent offers. Houston was an obvious destination for Kimbrel but they've picked up Graveman and Garcia. Marte has been dealt, now Gallo and those were both pretty obvious potential Bryant landing spots.

There was talk they wanted Joey Bart from the Giants for Kris Bryant, which sounds like a steep price for a rental. Maybe they're asking for too much now and will drop their offers come Friday.

I didn't think the old "keep adding low ranked players until the AI says yes" trick worked in MLB.

oh it's Bend Over for Cashman season again? Good grief. This doesn't seem much better than offering a QO and getting a first round pick for Gallo...

Is it, though? I mean at this point I'm down to trade them all, Bryant, Rizzo, Baez. Why not? Take a run at signing them in the off-season if you want them back, but Kimbrel/Tepera/some of the aforementioned will almost certainly be moved, and I don't see how the train has been missed.

There are 2 active Josh Smiths in the minors. Texas already had one, now they’ve cornered the market.

#6 Going to try to replicate the Steve Henderson strategy of the Mariners. I believe the idea was to get a bunch of guys with the same name. One good. You try and trade the others to careless teams.

Never underestimate the power of Jon Daniels's baseball acumen combined with the willingness of the two goofs in the owner's box to find new levels of cheapitude.

It appears that the Rangers will pay the full salary of the players going to the Yankees:
The Rangers are paying all of Gallo’s remaining contract, tweets Jim Bowden of The Athletic. MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand tweets that Texas will pay “most” of the deal. Either way, the Rangers’ inclusion of cash and the Yankees’ recent trade of Justin Wilson suggests they’re still angling to remain under the luxury tax. Getting financial help from Texas will free them to continue pursuing other additions. … Texas is also paying Rodriguez’s salary, per Joel Sherman of the New York Post.
Nice of them to help out the financially-challenged teams. Perhaps they will also pay for any gaming license needed for the Stadium Casino when that comes to pass.

The Yankees’ minor league system was considered pretty weak going into the season, right? Other than Jasson Dominguez do they have any prospects that unbiased scouts are excited for? So what’s Texas’ game plan here? Do they know something about the guys they’re getting back that nobody else does? Or is this just a hope and a prayer that they hit the powerball a year or two from now?

Precedent from the last time the Rangers sent by far their best player to the cash-strapped Yankees.

LOL. Ca$hman doesn't trade away legit prospects, and that fits right in with the Rangers organizational strategy of not acquiring good (read: "expensive") players.

Their late-June/early-July hot streak of 10-7 jeopardized the 110-loss target I had for this team over the winter, but then they promptly lost 12 straight and now 13 of their last 14 to get back on track. They're on a 105-loss pace now. If the players pack it in -- more so than they already have, I mean -- they might even break 110.

Wait-the Rangers are also throwing in money to cover the salaries of Gallo and Rodriguez? For the extra year of Gallo's deal and that much cash, Texas should have received four of the Yankees top ten prospects, not four of their top 30...

Here are 8 things that happen when a smart, well run organization makes a trade with a dumb, poorly run organization. Number 6 will shock you!

I thought Hand was going to end up with the Yankees. At one point their assistant to the traveling secretary was obsessed about having him.

It has a longer history than many think:

Transactions
January 11, 1977: Drafted by the Texas Rangers in the 1st round (10th pick) of the 1977 amateur draft (January).

November 10, 1978: Traded by the Texas Rangers with Greg Jemison (minors), Juan Beniquez, Mike Griffin and Paul Mirabella to the New York Yankees for Mike Heath, Sparky Lyle, Larry McCall, Dave Rajsich, Domingo Ramos and cash.

Guess the player?
   17. winnipegwhip Posted: July 29, 2021 at 01:14 PM (#6031226)
That player's minor league number the first two years

Year Age Tm Lg W L W-L% ERA G GS GF CG SHO SV IP H R ER HR BB IBB SO HBP BK
1977 18 TEX-min A 11 3 .786 3.14 17 16 3 0 0 109.0 98 47 38 12 53 2 101 5 1
1978 19 TEX-min AA 5 5 .500 3.16 13 13 6 0 0 91.0 66 40 32 3 49 1 127 3 1

127 Ks in 91 IP in AA in those days is impressive.

16,

Is that Righetti?

Yes
   20. Rally Posted: July 29, 2021 at 03:16 PM (#6031261)
Many a fine MLB career has come from taking a struggling starter and turning him loose in the bullpen. Yankees know this better than anybody after the career of Mariano Rivera.

Of all the starter to reliever conversions, the one that I would most like to use a time machine to undo is Righetti. He was turning into one of the best starters in the league before they moved him to the pen. I doubt he would have had a HOF career, since he ran out of gas at age 33 and I see no reason to think starting would have been gentler on his arm than relieving. But I think he could have had a 5-8 year run as an ace.

He pitched well if he was able to be a "master of his domain."

Gallo has the highest TTO %age (58.2) in the history of MLB (min 2000 PAs)
