NFL, NBA offer free access to past games. MLB should follow their lead.

On Wednesday, both the NFL and the NBA announced that, as a way to encourage fans to practice social distancing amid Coronavirus (COVID-19), they are offering free access to past games. For the NFL, this is through NFL Game Pass. For the NBA, this is through NBA League Pass.

NFL Game Pass offers full, commercial-free broadcasts of preseason, regular season, and playoff games from 2009-19 as well as condensed 45-minute replays. Furthermore, fans can access various camera angles, film sessions, and film breakdowns. NBA League Pass offers full and condensed replays of games from the 2019-20 season along with an archive of classic games.

MLB has yet to do the same, though they are giving away some digital copies of MLB The Show 20, a video game that was just released. The league should follow the NFL and NBA’s lead and offer fans free access to MLB.tv to encourage social distancing. It costs the league next to nothing and can be a great way to maintain fan interest in a time when their attention can be diverted into any number of other directions. Additionally, it can be a great way to rope in new fans.

In my case, I’m interested out of a bit of personal curiosity- I wonder how many classic baseball games exist that are not currently on the tape-trading circuit, and this may be as good a time to figure that out as any…..

Oh man, THIS.... This, this, this.... I could fill several weekends rewatching the 2016 playoffs and WS.

Of the top of my head, the Sandberg game is always a winner... There are a couple of games from 1989 - the 8-run late inning comeback.... the Les Lancaster doubles in the tying run game in extra innings... Even last year's disappointment... Bote's walk-off... Heyward's slam....

Get on it, MLB.... I will start compiling my list.

I would watch all the Astros 2017 playoffs again, and be quite happy. And even the 2018 and 2019 playoffs would be great.
And watching the Blues winning the Stanley Cup again would be nice, too.

Zonk, MLB network replayed the Cubs/Phils 23-22 game yesterday. Marquee (which nobody gets) is replaying all 11 of the Cubs wins from the 2016 playoffs each night and the Cubs twitter is live tweeting it; last night was game 1 of the NLDS. Not baseball, by NBCSN is replaying a bunch of classic Bulls/Hawks games the next month plus.

Damn my channel surfing fails! That's another one that would have made my list....

It was cool to see Wrigley and environs circa 1979, and there was a segment where Jack Brickhouse had a Bulls player in the booth and was asking about who they were going to draft. He talked about Magic Johnson being already committed to LA, but maybe they'd get Larry Bird, and how both of them were probably going to be excellent players.

However, it would have been better if they would have just showed the game with the original audio, rather than having Larry Bowa go on and on about how the game was better back then in voiceover commentary.

I was at that one! Would be fun to relive it, but alas I am one of the 99.7% of people in Chicago who does not get Marquee.

I would prefer to watch ordinary games I have no recollection of, so I can be surprised by the outcome.

MLB already WAS allowing free streaming of past games before anyone ever heard of coronavirus. Regular season games, that is.

That's because you Boston fans got spoiled rotten... Cubs fans are still in a mindset to appreciate predetermined positive outcomes.

Fangraphs has a link to 2016 Game 7 in its entirety!

Not sure I can stomach watching the whole thing again, though...I assume ####### Maddon doesn't let Hendricks pitch any longer this time around.

just be sure to drink every time either manager makes an unfathomable strategic decision.

once Michael Martinez - he of the 37 (!) career OPS+ in 621 mind-numbing MLB PA - comes to bat as the Indians' last chance, empty every last bottle by the end of the AB.

It's not even noon yet here, and the game is almost 6 hours long. I'd be passed out before dinner.

Agreed. I'm certain I can't.

I'm streaming a bunch of classic sports on shuffle play here. It's maybe 25% baseball and also has football, basketball, hockey, soccer, auto racing, and a very occasional Aussie Rules grand final. Last time I checked, it was playing the (legendary to USFL fans) Michigan Panthers-LA Express playoff game from 1984.

He put up a .252/.297/366 in the Atlantic League last year for the Lancaster Barnstormers. I have driven the Manager/GM a couple of times -- I guess it won't be appropriate to ask him what the F he was thinking the next time (If ever).

I'm still waiting for MLB to upload the full broadcasts of the games of 2019, which may never happen. It seems full games on YouTube is a thing of the past.

But in case people don't remember, you can find maybe 85% of the games from 2009-2018 on YouTube. You just have to type "[Road Team] AT [Home Team] - [Month] [Date with 0], [Year]"

The teams each have a three-letter code that's usually the first three letters of the team's city, unless the city has two words, then it's the first letter of each word then A or N to distinguish if the team is an American or a National League team. The other exception is Chicago which it's the first two letters of Chicago followed by an A or an N. Anyways here's a full listing of the the team codes

ARI, ATL, BAL, BOS, CHA, CHN, CIN, CLE, COL, DET, HOU, KCA, LAA, LAN, MIA (FLO 2009-2011), MIL, MIN, NYA, NYN, OAK, PHI, PIT, SDN, SEA, SFN, SLN, TBA, TEX, TOR, WAS
