NGC declines MLB’s request to prohibit betting on spring training games

The Nevada Gaming Control Board has declined Major League Baseball’s request to prohibit betting on spring training games.

The league had recently submitted a written request to the NGC asking that spring training games be taken off the board at the state’s regulated sportsbooks.

In declining MLB’s request, the NGC wrote, “Based on our history and experience in regulating sports wagering, we are not inclined to prohibit our licensed sports books from taking wagers on MLB Spring Training games. We have a common goal to combat sports bribery and maintain the integrity of your sport, and are available to discuss ways we can work together in this effort.”

Major League Baseball said spring training games carried “heightened integrity risks,” in part because players are not expected to give maximum effort, and that the expansion of sports betting beyond Nevada exacerbates that risk.

What could possibly go wrong with MLB taking money from gambling interests and having an "official gaming partner"?

You can bet on WWE and Game of Thrones, max effort is a non-issue as long as they don't let people know when they specifically plan to throw some lazy pitches.

and on the other hand, I would love to meet the people who bet on spring training games. Talk about the extreme need for having something in play all of the time.

Is there betting on pre-season football games?

Of course.

Am I being too cynical that the first thing I thought was "Why now?".....has someone gotten caught and we haven't heard about it ?

it has been going on legally in NV for years - but now that the spotlight is on, leagues are trying to act shocked, shocked that there is preseason gambling in their establishment.

in other news, Bobby Valentine testified Tuesday at a Connecticut casinos/sports betting hearing in Hartford. he noted his tenure as a MLB player, manager of many MLB teams - including "seven months" managing the Red Sox. drew some chuckles in the Hartford chamber.

Bobby V backs legalizing sports betting, including online and NCAA games. says it's happening anyway so.... also is a partner with CT's OTB horse racing betting provider.

I don't understand why you'd offer odds on that, when there are people who actually know the answer. I suppose a particularly big bet would draw attention, and the bookmaker would hope that any small bets by the people who know would just be absorbed in the book, but still. I'm also unsure how you'd go about setting the odds in the first place. What's Bran's favouritism based on? I hope this isn't a massive spoiler.

If they allow anything more than low stake bets on that throne market, then it has to be a spoiler.

You offer odds based on the bets you receive. For every $150 bet on Bran you need $100 bet on anyone else to break even. For every $100 bet on Sansa you need $800 bet on anyone else to break even. I guess it's possible that both Bran and Sansa bets are winners depending on the fine print. Ideally every bet falls within the profit range and that anything except a council being established to rule Westeros in the season finale means the casino makes money.

The first additional protection for the casino is that it will cap betting at $100 so if some production assistant tries to turn a profit they need to make lots of bets which makes it easier to identify. One reasonably wealthy person can justifiably wager $100k on the Night King and it's hard to prove they knew something, if 1000 max bets are placed on the Night King you just have to get one of those bettors to testify that they received reliable information before placing the bet. The other additional protection is that even if 7% of the money is bet on Arya who wins and the casino loses money on the specific event it's simply a promotional offer, no different than paying for ads on youtube, doubling your first deposit or free roll contests that offer betting money as prizes. As long as winning or even losing on the Game of Thrones bet leads to additional wagering by the player at the site the casino will eventually come out ahead for offering the odds on GoT.

You offer odds based on the bets you receive.

You change odds based on the bets you receive. You set the initial odds based on the bets you believe you will receive. I don't see what the basis for that belief could be here.

Platinum Club or additional prize given out among those who bet on another entertainment event, free $20 bet on the winner of Game of Thrones without knowing the odds. $2000 in promotional bets and there are your odds. If someone is already on staff who is a big fan of GoT they can offer advice to adjust those odds and it's possible a casino offers enough odds on entertainment events to justify someone having a primary responsibility to set the initial odds but generally promotions are more efficient since you made 100 customers happy.
