Nick Martinez agrees to contract to remain with Padres

Five days after opting out of his contract and becoming a free agent, Nick Martinez agreed to a three-year, $26 million contract that could be worth as much as $42 million.

“I love the city,” Martinez said Wednesday morning. “The fans were incredible. The support, the love. I feel like they have the same desire to win as the team does. Obviously, you talk about the clubhouse, how great the group of guys are, it was really a no-brainer.”

Robert Suarez agreed last week to a five-year, $46 million deal with the Padres after opting out of hRis deal three days earlier.

Martinez, 32, signed a four-year, $26 million deal in March that gave him the ability to opt out after each of the first three seasons.

The new deal guarantees him $10 million in 2023, $8 million in ‘24 and $8 million in ’25. He can opt out after ’23, and the deal contains performance bonuses. Should he perform well as a starter, thus increasing his value, the team has $16 million options for both ’24 and ’25.

What the hell is going on? First that ridiculous reliever deal in Hou. Now Suarez, with 48 good innings under his belt, gets 5/$46 and Martinez, off an above-average swingman season, gets 3/$26. Do teams think they've finally cracked the reliever code and know which ones are for real and will age well?

Suarez and Martinez are both guys who took off for Japan years ago and it's worked out great for them. Suarez has 1 year of service time but it took an FA contract to get him back to the US and he's parlayed that into a nice contract that also had options, now turning that into 5/$46. Martinez had 3 years of service time before he went over but got the option-heavy deal mentioned above.

I wonder how the pitch clock will affect him? He's agonizing to watch. He does that rocking foot-to-foot thing for upwards of 15 seconds before even beginning the process of throwing a pitch.

I don't feel bad that the Cardinals signed Stratton for 2.8 mil today.

Yep, unless you have nobody in your minors that you think can pitch at a major league level, who will never be a top tier pitcher, it makes no sense, these roles are designed for the grind machine of AAA pitchers who are on their last chances. You could sign 5 minor league free agents for that amount and one of them is probably going to end up giving you better performance, and if you strike gold and get two, you are standing on a gold mine.
