Nine most surprising players who made Opening Day rosters

2. Tucupita Marcano, 2B, Padres
Marcano might be the most surprising inclusion on any roster. The last time he played in a regular season game, it was as a 19-year-old in the Midwest League. Nevertheless, he cracked the Padres bench after hitting .405/.479/.619 in 49 plate appearances this spring. Marcano is on the smaller side, suggesting he’s never going to hit for much power. He should, however, put the ball in play at a high frequency, and his above-average footspeed ought to give him a chance to contribute secondary value….

9. Garrett Whitlock, RHP, Red Sox
Whitlock was a Rule 5 pick by way of the Yankees, which will make for a fun footnote if he becomes a meaningful contributor on the strength of his fastball-slider combination. Why would the Yankees leave him exposed? He underwent Tommy John surgery in July 2019 that, when combined with the pandemic, has sidelined him for an awkwardly long time. Whitlock should open the season as a reliever; if the Red Sox can help him improve his changeup, he might eventually get a shot at taking a spot in the rotation.

Nogowski is one of those devil Magic organizational development guys. Good bat to ball skills. Seems to be unphased by major league pitching and really good eye. He’d start on a number of weaker teams. I wonder if they can flip him for a young starter at some point since he’s positionally limited. A lot of the amateur prospect watchers who follow the cards think this could be pretty good

Say what? He's a 28-yo minor-league 1B with a career minors ISO of 125 ... and you think he can be flipped for a young anything? Flipped for a vet reliever who's about to be FA at the deadline maybe. Beyond that, if he's gonna find PT, it will be in the OF. Peeking at the Cards' roster, hard to see how he's different than Austin Dean, a 27-yo minors 1B/OF with a career minors ISO of 150 and 318 terrible majors PAs. If Nogowski does get PT and looks like another Luke Voit then get back to us. Nogowski is one of those odd RHB who is LHT so that's ... something.

Lucas Luetge is way more surprising to me than young guys or Rule 5 picks.
