Thursday, July 16, 2020 Mets sale: Sheldon Adelson complicates Steve Cohen, Alex Rodriguez-Jennifer Lopez, Josh Harris-David Blitzer bids

At this point, four suitors have moved on to the second round: Billionaire hedge fund manager Steve Cohen, a consortium led by ex-New York Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez and fiancee Jennifer Lopez, and a combined bid from New Jersey Devils and Philadelphia 76ers co-owners Josh Harris and David Blitzer. The New York Post reports a fourth “mystery bidder” remains in play as well.

On Wednesday, the New York Post revealed the mystery guests to be billionaire casino mogul Sheldon Adelson and private equity giant Silver Lake Partners.

Perfect for the Mets: a politically divisive casino mogul.

Back in 2009, there was speculation that Trump might be the named corporate sponsor of the new stadium, which did not inspire the revulsion it would today from 50%+ of Mets fans.  Adelson is the next best thing.  At least is’s incredibly rich.

Harry: Shel? Sheldon? No, no, you didn't have great sex with ... Sheldon.
Sally: I did too.
Harry: No you didn't. A Sheldon can do your income taxes. If you need a root canal Sheldon's your man, but humping and pumping is not Sheldon's strong suit. It's the name. Do it to me 'Sheldon', you're an animal 'Sheldon', ride me big 'Sheldon'. Doesn't work.

I, for one, hope Sheldon wins

It seems likely the Mets are going to end up with an ownership group including people who are worse human beings than the Wilpons.

Isn't Adelson older than Fred Wilpon?

He can afford to keep his brain alive in a jar.

The original reporting appears a bit shaky. Other reports indicated Adelson wasn’t mounting a separate bid, but would join the Harris-Blitzer stable, although Adelson & Silver Lake both later denied any interest in the Mets. Perhaps all the rumors are designed to deflect attention from the BBTF bid?

Hadn't really factored Literally Sheldon Adelson into my "any owner is better than the Wilpons" equation. I'm going to need a minute with this. Also considering moving someplace uninhabited and starving there.

I saw further rumor that Adelson was not part of the Harris group or interested in a stake in the team, but if the Harris group can build a casino in the parking lot (!!?!!?) then Adelson’s company would fund and run it.

Adelson has been sniffing around the idea of a NYC casino for years.

3 new NYC casino licenses can be issued in 2023, around the time Adelson turns 90.

the "racinos" at Aqueduct and Yonkers - they are racing and slots parlors, with no table games nor sports betting - are the two favorites.

Adelson was asked a couple of years ago about building a Meadowlands casino. he's interested, but is in the camp that any such opening inevitably would lead NYS into allowing a Manhattan casino (dicey, because the powerful NYC hotel lobby has key lawmakers on speed dial).
