No matter how much money the Cubs and White Sox spend, it’s never enough for their fans

White Sox Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf was criticized for offering free agent Manny Machado only $250 million in guaranteed money intead of the $300 million it took for the Padres to sign him, while Cubs Chairman Tom Ricketts was forced to defend his spending habits despite a $212 million payroll, the biggest in franchise history.

Whether the hustle-is-optional approach by Machado would’ve been a good fit on a young, rebuilding team, or the Cubs’ chemistry would’ve suffered with the addition of a high-maintenance player such as Bryce Harper, seems to be irrelevant. To paraphrase late Raiders owner Al Davis, “Just spend, baby” is the motto most fans live by.

the Cubs’ chemistry would’ve suffered with the addition of a high-maintenance player such as Bryce Harper,

I ask Cub fans in all sincerity...was acquiring Harper ever really a plan for the Cubs this offseason?

They currently have an overpaid RF who of course is pretty much all glove and no stick and would be quite difficult to move unless the Cubs were going to pay a large portion of the monies still owed.

I find this hand wringing over the Cubs hard to understand. They've won a bucketload of games these last 4 years, won a WS, been to the NLCS a number of times, the core is still young. What appears to be a good FO and manager all working from the same successful script. How is this not considered successful? You can't really expect more then what they are doing.

2--not a Cubs fan but interact with a lot and my lame assessment is that Cubs fans, not the club obviously, assumed they would 'own' the division for a while because of all the young talent on the club. So the Cubs did win the division in 2017 but kind of ###### around for 3 months. Then last year they had it, they HAD IT, and then it was gone and the season over. I get the frustration.

I was hoping they would sign Harper because this team has a window that's closing quickly. Most of the big name players all came to the majors within 1-2 years of each other, which means they'll be moving through arb and into FA around the same time. By 2021, this team will likely be scattered to the 4 winds.

You've got 2, maybe 3 years left with this core of players. I wanted management to acknowledge that and make a bold move to try to ensure that 2016 wasn't the only title. Heyward, Almora, Happ, Schwarber - they're all fine-to-good players in the OF. But Harper brings at least the possibility of someone who could put up an MVP-level season.

I don't find anything that the Cubs did in the last 4 years bad or disappointing, even when they fizzled out last year. They had a rash of injuries to key players, and still managed to win 95 games. These predictions that put them at last place in the NL Central this year are just silly, as are the ones suggesting that Theo should be fired, Maddon should be let go, etc.

However - in 2016, they went all out to ensure the title, giving up very good prospects to bring in the missing pieces. Here, they didn't have to give up prospects, but they would have to give up money, and they're less willing to do so. Yes maybe you pay a luxury tax penalty for a year or two, but like I said - the team has a window, and it's going to be far too expensive (Harper or no Harper) to start keeping everyone around.

What else did Lee Elia have to say?

"Copulate with those copulatin' fans who come out here and say they're Cub fans that are supposed to be behind you rippin' every copulatin' thing you do. I'll tell you one copulatin' thing, I hope we get copulatin' hotter than feces, just to stuff it up them 3,000 copulatin' people that show up every copulatin' day, because if they're the real Chicago copulatin' fans, they can kiss my copulatin' buttocks right downtown and PRINT IT.

"They're really, really behind you around here... my copulatin' buttocks. What the copulate am I supposed to do, go out there and let my copulatin' players get destroyed every day and be quiet about it? For the copulatin' nickel-dime people who turn up? The Oedipuses don't even work. That's why they're out at the copulatin' game. They oughta go out and get a copulatin' job and find out what it's like to go out and earn a copulatin' living. Eighty-five percent of the copulatin' world is working. The other fifteen percent come out here. A copulatin' playground for the penis-vaccuumers. Rip them Oedipuses. Rip them copulatin' penis-vaccuumers like the copulatin' players. We got guys bustin' their copulatin' buttocks, and them copulatin' people boo. And that's the Cubs? My players get around here. I haven't seen it this copulatin' year. Everybody associated with this organization have been winners their whole copulatin' life. Everybody. And the credit is not given in that respect.

"Alright, they don't show because we're 5 and 14... and unfortunately, that's the criteria of them dumb 15 Oedipal percent that come out to day baseball. The other 85 percent are earning a living. I tell you, it'll take more than a 5 and 12 or 5 and 14 to destroy the makeup of this club. I guarantee you that. There's some copulatin' pros out there that wanna win. But you're stuck in a copulatin' stigma of the copulatin' Bridegrooms and the Phillies and the Cardinals and all that cheap feces. It's unbelievable. It really is. It's a disheartening copulatin' situation that we're in right now. Anybody who was associated with the Cub organization four or five years ago that came back and sees the multitude of progress that's been made will understand that if they're baseball people, that 5 and 14 doesn't negate all that work. We got 143 copulatin' games left.

"What I'm tryin' to say is don't rip them copulatin' guys out there. Rip me. If you wanna rip somebody, rip my copulatin' buttocks. But don't rip them copulatin' guys 'cause they're givin' everything they can give. And right now they're tryin' to do more than God gave 'em, and that's why we make the simple mistakes. That's exactly why."

One of these things is not like the other, and since there are only two...

The White Sox were 2nd bottom in total payroll last season. Barely ahead of Tampa (actually by one ranking I have seen, they were dead last, depends exactly how you calculate it I assume). They are projected for 24th so far by Cots next season.

Making a non-competitive offer to a star player, you pretty much know will be rejected, is not the same as actually spending money.

The thing with the Cubs is that they promised massive spending to get what they need without using prospects at this stage. We get there and poof the money is gone. Yeah its a really high payroll but there is no reason to not go higher thats what is frustrating.
