Nutting: pricey free agent would imbalance Pirates payroll

Having watched the San Diego Padres reach a $300 million, 10-year deal with Manny Machado, Pirates owner Bob Nutting doesn’t think it makes sense Pittsburgh general manager Neal Huntington to add a pricey free agent.

A huge salary could cause the portion paid to one player to be “overweight.”

“You get an imbalanced payroll, that you have much more challenging team dynamic, much more challenging clubhouse dynamic, much more limitation in crafting an overall roster that can bring a championship,” Nutting said Wednesday. “I’m not sure that that necessarily makes a team a team more competitive and more ready to win a championship.”

Of course, as the full article implies, this is a bit rich coming from the folk who throw nickles around like they were manhole covers….

The two basic methods of avoiding an imbalanced payroll are fielding a contender or an AAAA team.

"Yes, our team has sucked for years, but we do maintain an all-important balanced payroll. Better that than actually having to pay good players."

That's pretty rich coming from a team that hasn't won a championship since the Carter administration. I'd submit that the only thing Nutting knows about building a championship roster is that he doesn't want to do it because it might cut into short-term profits.

The two basic methods of avoiding an imbalanced payroll are fielding a contender or an AAAA team.

Not what your table shows. 6 of the bottom 10 are the best teams in baseball -- Mil, Bos, Hou, StL, Cubs, Yanks -- and three others are 500-ish -- Min, Pit, LAA ... and the Giants are trying to contend. No AAA teams there. Det, Balt, Atl, KC lead the AAAA brigade and are in the top 6.

Which simply brings up the utility of even measuring this (I know, it was Nutting's claim not yours). Chris Davis is vastly overpaid but it's not particularly highly paid by today's standards. This is even more true of Chen and Gordon and Khris Davis. The way you GET an "imbalanced" payroll is by having one vet you can't trade and 24 others you're paying next-to-nothing (Det being the extreme example) -- i.e. by being a low-payroll team. Many of those teams of course are crappy teams. But it's not about what %age goes to the best player, it's about the total payroll and the quality of the players (duh). That is, if the Marlins could trade Chen, they'd have more balance and be just as bad. If the Indians traded Santana for nothing, their balance would improve only slightly (Kipnis! at $14.7 out of about $100 M) and their quality would drop. Or they could add Khris Davis or Charlie Morton (or both!) and they'd be better balanced and a better team. Or they could add Greinke and become much less balanced and a better team. Or they could trade Kluber, become more imbalanced and a worse team.

we went through this AGES ago with the first ARod contract. It might have been Gammons himself raising the danger of ARod eating up nearly 25% of the Rangers' payroll while completely ignoring that the Rangers' non-ARod payroll was the equal of the largest payrolls in their division. The problem wasn't ARod making the payroll top-heavy, it was they were spending the other $80 M on a lousy set of players. And of course he was delivering tremendous value so it's not like they had better ways to spend that $25 M (but, esp with 20/20 hindsight, lots of obviously better ways to spend the other $80 M).

The AAAA brigade gets there from trying to compete. Donaldson signs a one year contract so his current contract won't contribute to a cycle but had the Jays signed the MVP to a long term contract most likely they are near the top of the list because they tried to compete and did get two playoff appearances. Wei-Yin Chen is signed by a team who at least appears to be trying to compete, they sign two future MVPs to large contracts relative to their MLB careers to date and extend various other players and are signing mid-level free agents annually. Their top pitcher dies, their lead-off hitter gets a PED suspension, their best position player has his face broken and none of the FA signings work out all that well and the team is dismantled by new ownership.

Baltimore didn't sign Chris Davis to a $161mil contract because they wanted to light money on fire for a mediocre at best player on a 100 loss team, they thought they were signing a superstar who was going to lead a competitive team. The last big contract left on the D'Backs is going to be a large percentage of the payroll. And whoever had the most years remaining on their contract was going to end up being most of the Tigers payroll when Mike Ilitch died and his kids wanted profits instead of trying for a championship.

If Nutting wants to be sure of a balanced payroll he can either never compete or field a contender.

We already know which of these is Nutting's preference.
