Oakland Athletics’ Jesus Luzardo suffers broken pinkie while playing video game

Oakland Athletics left-hander Jesus Luzardo will be off the mound for a while—and maybe off video games too.

Luzardo is out indefinitely after breaking the pinkie on his pitching hand when he thumped a table while playing a video game before his start Saturday.

An X-ray after an 8-4 loss to the Baltimore Orioles showed a hairline fracture, and Luzardo was put on the 10-day injured list Sunday.

Oakland manager Bob Melvin said he didn’t know how much time Luzardo would miss or whether he would require a cast or splint on the finger. Melvin was hopeful the pitcher could still keep his arm in shape given the location of the break.

“Before the game he was playing a video game and accidentally bumped his hand on the desk as he was playing the game,” Melvin said. “He came in, was a little bit sore, training staff checked him out. We threw him in the cage before he went out there, watched him warm up. He was comfortable pitching, the training staff was comfortable with him pitching. After the game, we got an X-ray and there was a hairline in the pinkie finger.”

Also, Bill Clinton didn't inhale, Jeff Kent was washing his truck, etc.

I'm not sure I get what you think the gotcha is, or what happened instead? He punched a hooker?

Guitar Hero I assume?

#4 Doesn't have to be a hooker. A fight in a bar or a strip club or ... some place he wasn't supposed to be.

It's at least plausible that he wasn't telling the truth, but I don't know that we should go straight to, he's lying (which I think is your point)

Sosa's trip to the disabled list in the wake of a sneeze gone wrong is all all-time great.

#6 - shrug -

Seems like an appropriately embarrassing common enough stupid thing to do. I guess I'm more of a fan of Occam's Razor here.

I could see that. He couldn't land that sturgeon for the 19th time and just lost it.

The table unexpectedly jumped into the path of Luzardo's finger, and he couldn't swerve out of the way in time.

Knowing these facts:

1. Luzardo was seemingly healthy before he took the mound. The video game injury was not reported at that point.
2. He gave up 6 runs in the third inning against the Orioles, despite not being hit hard. The inning was a mix of soft hit balls falling in and Oakland errors.
3. He finished the inning, and was then removed from the game.
4. Later we learn he's going on the IL with a broken finger

From that set of facts, I would deduce that Luzardo punched a wall or something out of frustration after leaving the game. Because that's the reaction that thousands of pitchers have had in similar circumstances before him. It is a weird twist to be told that he was injured all along and that the injury had nothing to do with the baseball game.

Why would the manager lie about it though? This isn't Luzardo hiding something from the team, it's nothing like Kent's truck washing or Barmes' venison.

Well we don't know that. I suppose "he accidentally hit his hand on a desk" could result in a broken bone if you do it the right way. It seems reasonable to be a little skeptical of the story.

Was it Chris Brown who slept on his eyelids wrong?

At least he didn't almost rip his arm out of the socket...

Not close. Not even close for the Cubs. Steve Trout fell off a stationary bike. Jose Cardenal had a sticky eyelid (though that was just one game I think).

#15 Glenallen Hill's trip to the DL is pretty special. Fell through a glass table after waking from a nightmare where he was being chased by spiders.

Some Jesus he is, can’t even heal his own pinkie.
