Kim and Pham just totally destroyed each other on a pop up where they collided really, really hard. Ugh.

Rough 1st inning for MadBum against the Mets. Never a good sign when you give up six hits in one inning, and one of them is a home run.

Mets-DBacks game supposedly only on Youtube. I found it on Fox2news.com, which is the AZ feed I thought but it sounds like John Franco is one of the broadcasters.

Lindor bunted for a single. hmm, I wonder if that could catch on.....

I did expect a sweep in the Cubs Padres series. Just didnt expect it to be the cubs doing the sweeping.

####, are the Cubs actually good now? They have a lot of injuries and it hasn't stopped them. There's plenty of fluke going on here with some of these fill-ins, but not all of this can be hand waved away. The bullpen is legit good to great, the pieces for a decent offense have always been there but never put it together consistently since 2016*, the defense is good...the rotation ain't great but Alzolay looks like the real deal at least and Hendricks is Hendricks.

I'm positive the ownership and FO was hoping to do a tear down at the deadline - they could still get a decent amount for guys like Bryant and Kimbrel while also getting worthwhile stuff for Baez and Rizzo and other rentals (Pederson, Davies, Chafin, etc). I'm not sure I totally want them to go the other direction and spend the prospect capital they've finally started to restock, but the way things are going now they can't become sellers. Then again, they also can't not sell and then decide not to resign anyone and tank after the year either.

*They have had hot periods before, but not like this. They're winning both with and without over-reliance on homers. I could look really foolish in a few months, but this feels a little different that other hot stretches.

What good is a Mets' broadcast if you can't get the Mets' broadcast team? They're the best.

The other day the Cubs lost 5-1. That was the first loss by more than one run for the entire month. That's an almost sure sign a team is playing well (or at least getting great results). And they went 9-7 in 1-run games and 11-1 in >1-run games. A lot of injuries but mainly bench players.

Anyway, I don't think the FO is disappointed. I think part of the plan was always "weak division, we might get lucky and have one last run." Otherwise they'd have been more active in the offseason and not bothered getting Davies back in the Darvish trade. And it almost looks like they knew what they were doing in the bullpen (I had my doubts.) Now if they keep rolling like this, they are going to have a PR disaster if they don't re-sign a couple of these guys (or at least make a legit effort) but if they just eke into the playoffs (Cards right there, Brewers have been hot) or miss them entirely, I think a tear-down is still the plan. I assume they will try to re-sign one of the big 4 and Javy's probably the best bet given he seems to have bounced back.

Don't look now, but Francisco Lindor has a five-game hitting streak (9-for-23), with three extra-base hits and six runs scored; OPS has climbed from .555 to .617.

Maybe he starting his rebound?
   10. The Yankee Clapper Posted: June 02, 2021 at 07:46 PM (#6022194)
Aaron Judge in CF for the Yankees against the Rays tonight, setting new height & weight records for the position. Gio Urshela’s 2-run HR the only scoring.
   11. The Yankee Clapper Posted: June 02, 2021 at 08:33 PM (#6022203)
Clint Frazier’s 2-run single gives the Yankees a 4-1 lead in the 4th. Bats might be heating up a bit.
   12. Walt Davis Posted: June 02, 2021 at 09:14 PM (#6022206)
Doesn't Judge set a record pretty much no matter where he plays except the mound (the Unit on height, maybe CC on weight). But Judge started one in CF in 2018 so he's presumably only tying his own height record, I'll let the scales decide on the weight record. I did check, Frank Howard never had a recorded appearance in CF. Winfield had many but he was an inch shorter according to b-r ... his last appearance in CF was 13 starts at age 32 when he might have rivalled him on weight but probably not. Nobody else springs to mind as a contender.

So let's check Stathead. They list Walt Bond at 6'7". I know nothing about him but he looks like he was pretty good but I assume injured (109 OPS+ in 1338 PA, done by 29) ... 11 starts in CF. Who knows if he was really 6'7" but unless he really wanted the CF height record, it's an odd height to choose if you're lying.

Holy ####, Bond died at age 29 from leukemia. Here's his story which mentions he was the tallest until Judge tied him in 2018.

Anyway, statcast lists several 6'6" guys include DJ Peters currently on the Dodgers. Stanton (at age 21, not a start), Adam Loewen, Corey Hart, John Mayberry Jr, Strawberry, Jimmy Hurst, Winfield and Dick Hall. Stanton and Strawberry should have sprung to mind but still come up short of Judge.

11 pitches in and Carlos Martinez has already surrendered 3 runs and has another runner on.
   14. salvomania Posted: June 02, 2021 at 09:28 PM (#6022211)
15 pitches in, 3 runs allowed, two on base, and zero outs.

Let's see if Carlos can make it through two innings tonight.
   15. salvomania Posted: June 02, 2021 at 09:29 PM (#6022212)
16 pitches in, five runs allowed, another in scoring position.

Let's see if Carlos can make it through one inning tonight.

EDIT: runner sent back to 3rd on ground-rule hit, so only four runs in. So far.
   16. salvomania Posted: June 02, 2021 at 09:34 PM (#6022213)
24 pitches in, 6 runs allowed, a runner on, and nobody out.

Let's see if Carlos can get *one out* tonight.
   17. salvomania Posted: June 02, 2021 at 09:37 PM (#6022214)
Okay, he walked the No. 8 hitter, now pitcher Buehler up, he's GOTTA get this guy, right?
   18. salvomania Posted: June 02, 2021 at 09:38 PM (#6022215)
And on Martinez's 32nd pitch, Buehler foul bunts for strike three. ONE OUT!
   19. salvomania Posted: June 02, 2021 at 09:39 PM (#6022216)
Betts gets his second hit of the inning, 7-1 Dodgers in the first, still just one out.
   20. salvomania Posted: June 02, 2021 at 09:40 PM (#6022217)
Muncy one-pitch AB, fly out, Martinez just one out away from "getting out of it."

"It" being the first inning.
   21. salvomania Posted: June 02, 2021 at 09:41 PM (#6022218)
Going for the rare 40-pitch inning...
   22. salvomania Posted: June 02, 2021 at 09:43 PM (#6022219)
Martinez yanked after allowing a four-pitch walk to Turner to load the bases with two outs.

He finished his night with 39 pitches.
   23. salvomania Posted: June 02, 2021 at 09:47 PM (#6022220)
And Bellinger greets the reliever with a grand slam. 11-1 Dodgers, Martinez charged with 10 earned runs in 2/3 of an inning.
   24. salvomania Posted: June 02, 2021 at 09:49 PM (#6022221)
Martinez's ERA goes from 4.22 to 5.83. Which isn't as much of a jump as I thought it would be.
   25. cardsfanboy Posted: June 02, 2021 at 10:01 PM (#6022222)
not a pretty game tonight. My only hope is that since it's a blowout early that the dodgers don't really try to stop the scoring and the Cardinals can at least get six so I can buy 60 cent drinks at mobile on the run.
   26. ERROR---Jolly Old St. Nick Posted: June 02, 2021 at 10:11 PM (#6022224)
Great showing by the Yankees in the just completed seventh inning: First the Rays get a run after Montgomery and Loaisiga boot comebackers; and then with two on and none out in the bottom half of the inning, Urshela gets nailed trying to advance on a passed ball and Torres gets picked off first.

And yet somehow they're still clinging to a 4-3 lead. Go figure.
   27. cardsfanboy Posted: June 02, 2021 at 10:17 PM (#6022226)
2 runs in the third, just need 4 more..... 60 cent drinks.... c'mon Cardinals.
   28. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: June 02, 2021 at 10:31 PM (#6022232)
Red Sox SP Pivetta goes 6, 2 runs, 9K. Nice QS. Bats are whisper quiet though, Sox now playing like the .500 team they really are.
   29. cardsfanboy Posted: June 02, 2021 at 10:52 PM (#6022238)
bases loaded... let's see if the Cardinals pitchers can walk another run in.. (They are going for a record, .... don't know what it is, ... but they are going for it... most bases loaded walks in a season)
   30. The Duke Posted: June 02, 2021 at 10:53 PM (#6022239)
Pham argues with Kim after collision. I had no idea Pham spoke Korean
   31. cardsfanboy Posted: June 02, 2021 at 10:54 PM (#6022240)
Dodgers pitcher just doubled with the bases loaded to make it 13-2 game... it's in the 4th inning (top of the fourth) .... really not a pretty game for my team.
   32. cardsfanboy Posted: June 02, 2021 at 10:55 PM (#6022241)
Make that 14 to 2..
   33. cardsfanboy Posted: June 02, 2021 at 10:56 PM (#6022242)
I'm curious if the Dodgers can reach 25 runs or so tonight. It's clear the Cardinals don't care about preventing runs.
   34. The Duke Posted: June 02, 2021 at 10:57 PM (#6022243)
Bumgarner looks like he’s going on IL. Each day brings a new big name onto IL. This is another reason not to make deadline deals this year. Everyone is so fragile, your team that looks like a 95 win team could disintegrate with injuries.
   35. salvomania Posted: June 02, 2021 at 11:02 PM (#6022244)
Tyler Webb might be a great guy, but I have to question his presence on a MLB pitching staff. Either he's hurt, or he's simply comically ineffective.

He's appeared in 22 games for the Cardinals this year (approx. 40%), throwing 16.1 innings while allowing 43 baserunners. Nineteen of those are *walks*. In 16.1 innings.

His ERA is 13.22. His single inning tonight featured five baserunners. I don't want to slag on a fellow human's workplace performance, but a body from AAA (or AA) couldn't be less effective,
   36. salvomania Posted: June 02, 2021 at 11:05 PM (#6022245)
Nice to see Dylan Carlson going yard again. That's three in the past week. If he winds up 15/75 with a .350 OBP while playing a lot of CF, that's a pretty nice year for a 22-year-old rookie.
   37. salvomania Posted: June 02, 2021 at 11:07 PM (#6022247)
I'm surprised Carlson doesn't have a SB---or even an attempt. He seems speedy enough and a good baserunner.
   38. Itchy Row Posted: June 02, 2021 at 11:25 PM (#6022250)
An intentional walk in a 14-3 game should be against an unwritten rule. Probably a written rule too.
   39. salvomania Posted: June 02, 2021 at 11:26 PM (#6022251)
F*ck the Dodgers IBBing .150-hitting Justin Williams to load the bases for the back-of-the-pen reliever.

I hope Elledge dinks one into the OF for a couple runs to screw Beuhler out of a "quality start."

EDIT: Coke to Itchy.
   40. Itchy Row Posted: June 02, 2021 at 11:33 PM (#6022254)
#### it. IBB Buehler for no reason.

I keep saying he has to be on the short list, if not favorite for NL Roy this year.
