¿Cómo ganarán hoy los Angelinos?

WSJ has a long article on the Oakland stadium. The topic is the port authority and shipping companies are strongly opposing the stadium for a variety of reasons including that the stadium will take up valuable port space and that boaters coming to game will block cargo ships from using port.

Viva Las Vegas !!

Reds on pace to be outscored by 553 runs
   4. salvomania Posted: May 05, 2022 at 02:04 PM (#6075358)
They scored three in the top of the first against the Brewers today!

But so far the first two Brewers have homered off of Hunter Greene in the bottom of the first, so their +1 for the day isn't looking very sustainable.

EDIT: Then walk, Rowdy Tellez double, and it's 3-3, still nobody out.
   5. salvomania Posted: May 05, 2022 at 02:20 PM (#6075359)
In his last four games + 1 at-bat today, Tellez has 13 rbi.
   6. Hombre Brotani Posted: May 05, 2022 at 02:32 PM (#6075362)
Ohtani just hit a very high, very long flyball into right-centerfield towards the short fence of the triangle in Fenway. Homerun distance, but the wind hung it up, and JBJ came over to make the catch... except the sun completely blinds Bradley. Ball comes down, off the wall for the a 400-plus-foot single.

I wonder if Ward scores on that if he decides to hang out by second base rather than trying to tag up. Either way, Rendon and Walsh looked feeble in their at bats and the Angels get nothing.
   8. salvomania Posted: May 05, 2022 at 02:47 PM (#6075366)
6-3 Brewers after 2, the run differential currently stands at 85, two innings into game 25.

Five teams have allowed fewer total runs than the Reds' current run differential.
   9. salvomania Posted: May 05, 2022 at 02:56 PM (#6075368)
Hunter Green has now allowed 5 homers today (Adames, Yelich, Urias, Tyrone Taylor, Hiura), and is mercifully being pulled with two outs in the third.
   10. ERROR---Jolly Old St. Nick Posted: May 05, 2022 at 03:02 PM (#6075369)
85% of Ohtani's pitches through 5 innings have been strikes.
   11. salvomania Posted: May 05, 2022 at 03:05 PM (#6075370)
On the plus side for Greene, 7 of the 8 outs he recorded were via the K.

He now has 29 Ks in his first 20.2 MLB innings but he's also allowed TEN home runs.
   12. ERROR---Jolly Old St. Nick Posted: May 05, 2022 at 03:36 PM (#6075382)
Vaccine refusnik Tanner Houck gives up a 2 run homer to give the Angels a 2-0 lead. Ohtani's now thrown 71 strikes in 85 pitches over 6 innings.
   13. salvomania Posted: May 05, 2022 at 03:41 PM (#6075385)
71 strikes in 85 pitches

Wow!

Vaccine refusnik Tanner Houck

LMAO!!

I still love BBTF, and its Primates.

Ohtani adds another ball off the wall, driving in a run and pushing the Angels lead to 4-0. What an incredible performance from The World's Most Special Boy.
   16. The Gary DiSarcina Fan Club (JAHV) Posted: May 05, 2022 at 04:07 PM (#6075390)
Yeah, this was a great Ohtani performance. Seven shutout innings, two balls off the wall in Fenway Park - you can't ask for much more.
   17. Hombre Brotani Posted: May 05, 2022 at 04:27 PM (#6075393)
It's more than just that. Ohtani's line is amazing: 7 IP, 0 runs, 6 hits. 11 Ks, 0 walks. 99 pitches, 81 strikes. 29 of those strikes were swings and misses. That's staggering.

Ohtani over his last three games: 18 IP, 12 hits, 2 runs, 2 walks, 27 Ks. Did anyone imagine that he'd be capable of that sort of BB/K ratio? He really can do just about anything.

Was going to watch the Nationals @ Rockies, which is supposedly streaming FREE on YouTube, but both the MLB e-mailed link & the one on MLB.TV lead me to “Video Unavailable”. Anyone have an idea why that would be the case?

As a consolation prize, I had to watch Angels @ Red Sox. Picked it up in time for the Boston bullpen implosion, but why did starter Rich Hill leave after 5 1-hit scoreless innings on 68 pitches? Is he coming back from injury, just considered too delicate, or did the Boston brain trust over value its bullpen or the benefit of avoiding the dreaded 3rd time through the order? Whatever, it didn’t work out well.
   19. The Gary DiSarcina Fan Club (JAHV) Posted: May 05, 2022 at 04:48 PM (#6075399)
If there's anything you can quibble with on Ohtani's pitching today, it's that he probably should have had MORE strikeouts. He went 0-2 or 1-2 on an absurd number of batters and actually didn't finish all that well on some of them. His splitter seemed a little bit off. But his location on his slider was unbelievable. The Sox couldn't do anything with it. And then he'd toss up a 98-mph fastball just for fun.
   20. Tulo's Fishy Mullet (mrams) Posted: May 05, 2022 at 04:57 PM (#6075405)
Hunter Green learned MLB players ca. Crush any fastball.
   21. Jay Seaver Posted: May 05, 2022 at 05:13 PM (#6075411)
18 - The Red Sox have been treating Hill like he's made of glass, and he's averaged <5 IP/game since 2019, when he missed a large chunk of the season. I don't know if there's a stated plan to always partner him with one of the swingmen, but that's what they've been doing.

I half-wonder if maybe they'll decide to ride him harder once Sale and Paxton are closer to ready, just get all they can out of that arm while they can.

He now has 29 Ks in his first 20.2 MLB innings but he's also allowed TEN home runs.

That's a remarkable line. I wonder if that's the fewest IP to reach 10 HRs allowed in history?
   24. Rally Posted: May 05, 2022 at 05:50 PM (#6075416)
If Hunter Greene faced Joey Gallo, all fielders should be called in to watch from the sidelines. Nothing will be hit to them.
   25. Walt Davis Posted: May 05, 2022 at 06:58 PM (#6075424)
but why did starter Rich Hill leave after 5 1-hit scoreless innings on 68 pitches? Is he coming back from injury, just considered too delicate

Hill is 42 and has been "delicate" his entire career. He made it to 195 IP at age 27; the second-highest total of his career was last year's 158.2 (at about 5 innings a start). Those are also the only two years in his career that he's made it over 25 starts. Since finding control in his mid-30s, he's carved out a very nice career as a pitcher a team knows will only give them 20-25 starts and 100-120 innings but they will be 100-120 very good innings. Teams have been following the "get all you can out of that arm" strategy for some time, they just know "as much" is "not a lot of pitches." Now he's 42, he's hanging by a thread of course and, given the big drop in K-rate this year, that thread is probably starting to fray.

In a career going back to 2005, Hill has reached 100 pitches in only 25% of his starts. I'm surprised he's done it as many as 8 tmes in the last 5 years. He's pitched bits of 18 seasons but it's still only 1151 IP. It's only 17 WAR but it's also 7 WAA and he hasn't had a below-average bWAR season since 2013. And looking at it now, that 2013 season was bizarre ... a total disaster of -1.3 bWAR in just 39 IP but that was a 6.28 ERA on a 3.82 FIP (with a 12/7 K/BB but only 3 HR). Anyway, on fWAR he might not have been below-average since 2009.

As a Red Sox fan, the best thing I can say about today's game is that I didn't get up and watch it here in Sydney.

As a fan of MLB in general, thank you Shohei for just your overall awesomeness.

I half-wonder if maybe they'll decide to ride him harder once Sale and Paxton are closer to ready, just get all they can out of that arm while they can.

None of this will matter as the Red Sox stink and this is going to be one of those finish near the bottom of the division years. Next year they'll win 94 games and the World Series.

FACES IN THE CROWD

Aaron Judge, Anthony Rizzo, and DJ Lamahieu each spotted at the World's Most Famous Arena midway through tonight's Rangers-Penguins playoff game - each wearing Rangers jerseys and chugging half-full beers (so only about 10 bucks worth).

MSG apeshit atmosphere for the second straight game.

hard to describe the fervor of an NHL playoff crowd - other than that in the best buildings, it's more primal and tribal than anything MLB, NFL, or NBA has to offer.

and yes, I know that's saying something.

Willie Mays turns 91 years young tomorrow.

rumor is he'd love a "Say Hey" headline for the Omnichatter headline...

so the Mets have scored 7 runs (so far) in the top of the 9th inning to grab an 8-7 lead on the Phillies.....

interesting that ex-Met Familia pitched a 1-2-3 8th inning but then was replaced for the 9th because... reasons?

that led to:
1B
HR
2B
lineout
1B
1B
K
2B
1B
2B
groundout

good call in the Mets postgame to have on Brandon Nimmo - the best ballplayer Wyoming has ever produced, I believe.

I have mentioned this before: for jaded baseball fans who think, "are you kidding me? if I played in the majors, I'd be a 12-year-old kid for my entire career !"

that's Nimmo. always smiling, genuinely excited, loves to wave to the fans - the whole nine yards.

Yadi just hit his first homer and the announcers said it ties him with Ted Simmons for Cardinal HRs. Hard to believe. I remember Simba bashing HRs and doubles and when Yadi hits one it's always a bit of a surprise. It took Yadi 2000 more at bats of course

Simmons did hit 76 HR after he left STL but still.....

Mikolas throws 7 great innings in last start and then gets hit hard in 8th. Leading giants 3-0 he gets hit hard in fifth and slinks out of it. Then in 6th he gets even harder and they don't take him out until bases loaded with two out. What is wrong with our manager ? He visits Mikolas on the mound and gets talked out of pulling him. Ugh.

Can't believe the cards are still winning here

   59. The Duke Posted: May 06, 2022 at 12:07 AM (#6075480)
Cards score 4 two out runs to out some cushion on the board. Giants doing a bullpen game tonight - this is another development I don't like in MLB. Not sure how to stop it other than limiting roster size.

I'd like to see the rosters go to like 18 for a game with an eight man taxi squad. Do you need more than that? Its 8 guys to start, an extra catcher and 2-3 PH. On the pitching side it's 6-8 pitchers. Are more players needed ?
   60. The Duke Posted: May 06, 2022 at 12:28 AM (#6075481)
Giants are 1-5 in last 6 and May go down again tonight - quite a turnaround from a great start
   61. The Duke Posted: May 06, 2022 at 12:33 AM (#6075482)
Giants have used nine pitchers in a nine inning game tonight. Yet another way to ruin the elegant sport
   62. Walt Davis Posted: May 06, 2022 at 02:08 AM (#6075486)
#59 ... you forgot the NL DH. Even with a 18 active limit, it's 9 starters, an extra C and probably no more than one emergency injury replacement and 7 pitchers. There's no real need for PH anymore, certainly not at the expense of an extra reliever. Sure, you'll get rid of the extreme bullpen games although most of the ones I've seen are usually around 6-7 pitchers.

It's not that hard, put a limit like 5 pitchers in the first 9 innings barring (scout's honor!) an injury (requiring some min IL stay), with the rest of the staff available if it goes extras. 5 pitchers doesn't even keep them from what they do most games, just gets rid of these sorts of bullpen games. If "injuries" get out of hand, you get more draconian.
