HOW WILL THE ANGELS LOSE TODAY?!
   2. Walt Davis Posted: June 01, 2023 at 04:35 PM (#6131108)
At the end of the May chatter, CFB brought up pitcher of the month. Stoman in May (IP, H, R)

6 5 1 vs Nats
6 4 2 vs Cards
6 3 1 vs Phils
8 4 2 vs Mets
9 1 0 vs Rays

3-1.

Oh, did I forget to mention 2.2 7 6 vs Twins? My bad.

Being a pitcher is rough. He ended April with a 2.29 ERA, throws 5 excellent starts inluding 2 of the best of his career ... and his ERA goes up to 2.59 because of one terrible start. And the Cubs' offense is kinda deGromming him to a 5-4 record. He is first in WARpit for the NL.
   3. Walt Davis Posted: June 01, 2023 at 04:49 PM (#6131114)
Stroman is currently #21 on the active WARpit list. Can we name the top 20? I'll spot you a couple, one of whom is not really active and the other hasn't pitched in a while so you might not think of him.

1
2
3
4
5 Hamels (still not pitching for anybody)
6
7
8
9
10
11
12
13t
13t Strasburg
15
16
17
18
19
20

"Hints": There are no relievers in the top 20 (Kimbrel #22 with 21.7). 5 LHP (incluuding Hamels). Only 6 have won the CYA. Maybe a couple of surprises but no "shockers" I don't think. There's a 3-WAR gap between #19 and #20 -- quite big under the circumstances -- but #20 probably won't be #20 by season's end ... maybe not even after another 1-2 Stroman starts.

Missed this thread coming up, knew it would.

6 5 1 vs Nats
6 4 2 vs Cards
6 3 1 vs Phils
8 4 2 vs Mets
9 1 0 vs Rays

3-1.

Oh, did I forget to mention 2.2 7 6 vs Twins? My bad.

those hit totals are nice, Mikolas was on a short leash to start the month, but he has a tendency to allow quite a few hits even in games he's pitching well, but his saving grace is he doesn't walk people (he had 3 starts in May where he allowed zero walks) Including Stroman's bad game, they both effectively pitched 38 innings in May (Stroman 37 1/3) but Miles allowed 30 hits, 6 walks Stroman 24 hits, 11 walks( 2 to 1 on hbp) 29 strikeouts for both 2 hrs allowed for both, the 6-0 advantage for Mikolas in stolen bases probably also helped him have the better month. although the 6-2 gdp advantage helped Stroman.

   6. cardsfanboy Posted: June 01, 2023 at 05:23 PM (#6131124)
I just realized that Whip doesn't include hbp (I know I probably knew that, but so I should say I just realized that whip should include hbp) whhip, and make sure to pronounce it as Stewey pronounces kool-whip.
   7. The Duke Posted: June 01, 2023 at 05:33 PM (#6131128)
Man I missed by a mole on Marco Gonzales - I thought he had had a much better career
   8. cardsfanboy Posted: June 01, 2023 at 05:42 PM (#6131131)
I'm looking at your list in 4 and the only name I can think of right now that isn't on the list is Cueto, but not sure where his war comes in, or if he's even considered active. (and only reason I thought of him is I had mentioned him in a thread sometime overt the past week or so)
   9. cardsfanboy Posted: June 01, 2023 at 05:44 PM (#6131134)
And I think since we are talking about Stroman and his name was brought up by Walt, that maybe he's a surprise name.
   10. Eric J can SABER all he wants to Posted: June 01, 2023 at 06:02 PM (#6131140)
Bringing this over from the last thread:

62 extra-inning games (i.e. 124 team-games), 143.1 extra innings pitched, 162 RS, 109 UER with just 4 RoE. Walk rates also very high but that's the 47 IBB; otherwise the slash line is pretty similar to the 9th inning. Anyway, give or take, 105 of 143 ghost runners have scored.

The IP total is going to solidly underestimate the number of innings that have taken place, since in home wins the bottom of the last inning is never credited as a full IP. If 2022's extra inning distribution roughly carries over to this year, I would estimate about 180 extra innings (that is, 90 innings*2 teams) having taken place.

The O/U for K's in today's Red Sox/Reds game has to be 25. Sale struck out the side in the 1st, and Greene K'd the leadoff guy (I missed Dever's AB, an out) and now Turner s about to K.
   12. Captain Joe Bivens, Pointless and Wonderful Posted: June 01, 2023 at 07:27 PM (#6131153)
Both SP's struck out the side.
   13. Walt Davis Posted: June 01, 2023 at 07:41 PM (#6131156)
No on Hill (active), Lester (retired), Colon (he hasn't pitched since 2018), Morton, Eovaldi, Gausman, Gonzalez, Ray. Good instincts but poor reading comprehension on Stroman CFB. :-) I specifically mentioned he was #21 and might be #20 with his next start (or Hendricks' next start or the combo of the two ... although Hendricks has looked pretty sharp on his return). Duke "cheated" by guessing 23 guys on his first go. But really, seeing as how I spotted you Hamels and even the still-active Strasburg, obviously I'd have listed Colon or Lester if they were included. (Hamels I think is still not officially retired and "working his way back" but he never seems to get there.)

1 verlander
2 Kershaw
3 Greinke
4 Scherzer
5 Hamels (still not pitching for anybody)
6 Sale
7 Wainwright
8 deGrom
9 Cueto (pitched 1 inning so far this year)
10 Cole
11
12 Bumgarner
13t Nola
13t Strasburg
15 Darvish
16 Lynn
17
18
19 Wheeler
20 Hendricks (though he might slip by)

#11 should be pretty easy. Too early for hints on #17 and #18.
   14. You can keep your massive haul Posted: June 01, 2023 at 07:51 PM (#6131157)
Felix Hernandez maybe?

EDIT: Hasn't pitched since 2019 when he was only 32

06.01... According to Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat, the Cardinals are recalling top prospect Jordan Walker from Triple-A Memphis on Friday.
Spin: Walker appears set to rejoin the Cardinals ahead of Friday's series opener against the division-rival Pirates. The 21-year-old top prospect struggled to a .274/.321/.397 triple-slash line with two homers and two steals across 20 games to open the regular season before being jettisoned to the minors back in late April. He's really turned things around of late at Triple-A Memphis and is clearly talented enough to make an immediate impact for fantasy managers.

..................

(I just traded him a week ago on a bargain contract for a lame duck Corbin Burnes - what could go wrong?)
   16. Walt Davis Posted: June 01, 2023 at 08:03 PM (#6131161)
#10 ... sure. But it's still a very different games. 163 runs scored on just 124 hits. That's what it's designed to do of course.
   17. Walt Davis Posted: June 01, 2023 at 08:04 PM (#6131162)
ACK! I take the below back. One has been on the IL all year. Still he is under contract for 2024.

All three missing pitchers have pitched this year.
   18. cardsfanboy Posted: June 01, 2023 at 08:08 PM (#6131163)
In some circles of Cardinal fandom, people were taking a relatively off handed comment by Walker as being a negative, when it was a smaller comment on a much larger interview which was decidedly more neutral. And the article even pointed out that Walker's performance, following the advice has improved. (he was a bit unlucky based upon statcast data his first week or two in the minors though)

When you are forced to start Edman in centerfield, it's time to bring up the talent you have, although we still don't have a legit health centerfielder-- if Nootbaar is still not healthy enough to play. (one good thing about two days off, is that it gives him truly a few days to recover) Mercado was listed as a supposed decent fielder, but his performance so far hasn't shown that to be the case. Poor positioning, poor routes and a couple of errors.
   19. Snowboy Posted: June 01, 2023 at 09:01 PM (#6131178)
Kluber as #11
Sonny Gray?
Carlos Carrasco?
   20. The Yankee Clapper Posted: June 01, 2023 at 09:05 PM (#6131179)
Speaking of roster moves, the Yankees made a few on today’s off day, reinstating Giancarlo Stanton, Josh Donaldson & Tommy Kahnle from the IL, while optioning Franchy Cordero, Oswaldo Cabrera & Matt Krook were optioned to AAA Scranton-Wilkes Barre. Stanton should help, the others may be more iffy, but the players optioned weren’t really contributing. Lots of folks still left on the IL, but it’s a start.

   22. Hombre Brotani Posted: June 01, 2023 at 09:55 PM (#6131188)
The angels load the bases with just one out, then called strike three and a line out. That was really disappointing.

Just throwing a dart, but how about Julio Teheran?
   24. The Duke Posted: June 01, 2023 at 10:03 PM (#6131190)
While everyone tries to figure out the last few pitchers the top 20 active position players are rather easy 1-14: Trout, Cabrera, Votto, Goldy, Betts, Longoria, Arenado, machado, freeman, Cutch, Altuve, Donaldson, Stanton, Harper.

Can you guess 15-20?

   25. Howie Menckel Posted: June 01, 2023 at 10:23 PM (#6131192)
anyone have an HBP fetish? here's your team !

[hint: A lot of Dunder Mifflin employees are grads of this school]

"In 2022, the New York Mets broke the modern MLB record for most hit-by-pitches in a season, accumulating 114 plunkings in 165 total games, their brief postseason run included. That’s 0.69 HBPs per game.

This spring, the Division-III Misericordia University Cougars were hit 153 times in 52 games for an eye-popping rate of 2.94 hit batters per game, an all-time NCAA record. They have ridden that avalanche of beanballs all the way to the D-III World Series, where they will take on No. 1 overall seed Johns Hopkins on Friday afternoon."

Since 2014, the Cougars have averaged 111 HBPs per season. These student-athletes are not soldiers of fortune or accidental baseball magnets, but rather, practitioners of patience and pain. Their monk-like approach is part of a unified and effective strategy designed to win ballgames. Misericordia wants you to hit them, again and again and again, until they score enough runs, steal enough bases, bunt enough runners over and beat you.

"Some of these guys will stand there, not move and take one off the ribs like a f***ing maniac," explained Dante Salerno, a current D-III assistant and former Misericordia outfielder.

Kluber 11 and Gray 19 are correct. One to go. By the way as of earlier today, Gray is #1 in AL WARpit
   27. JJ1986 Posted: June 02, 2023 at 07:11 AM (#6131214)
Kyle Freeland?
   28. Walt Davis Posted: June 02, 2023 at 03:43 PM (#6131282)
#27 nope.

1) I meant Gray at 18

2) #17 is a leftie. AS only once, received just 1 CYA vote in his career ... been on the IL all year.
   29. Howie Menckel Posted: June 02, 2023 at 03:52 PM (#6131286)
Quintana?
   30. Walt Davis Posted: June 02, 2023 at 03:56 PM (#6131287)
Batters (uncertain on all of these)

Xander
Springer
JDM (he's been around a long time)
Cruz (he's been around even longer)
Lindor
Rendon
Abreu

I know that's 7 guys for 6 slots. :-) That's OK, I got only one right -- Cruz. One guy I am universally embarrassed that I missed, one that I'm locally embarrassed that I missed, two I thought were probably still just outside the top 20 and one I'm shocked is still hanging onto his spot in the top 20.

(Lindor 22, Xander 25, Springer 26 weren't bad guesses.)
   31. The Duke Posted: June 02, 2023 at 04:17 PM (#6131290)
It's definitely not an intuitive group
   32. Froot Loops Posted: June 02, 2023 at 04:19 PM (#6131291)
Kyle Freeland?

Freeland has a good chance to become the Rockies' all-time leader in pitcher WAR this year. He's currently in second at 17.6, behind only Ubaldo Jimenez at 18.9.
   33. The Duke Posted: June 02, 2023 at 04:31 PM (#6131293)
Cardinals fielding a lineup of DHs tonight with Contreras, Walker, Gorman all playing positions and Burleson DHing

The cardinals have started playing Edman in CF with all the injuries.

Part of their pitching collapse this year has been a much worse fielding team;

Edman has been bad everywhere he has played with uncharacteristic errors at both SS/2B. Walker is abysmal in RF. Gorman is a statue at 2B (although to be fair he is good at everything else), Donovan plays everywhere but not well. They've given starts to Yepez in the OF who has racked up a -2 OAA on only about 10 chances. Burleson looks like early career Schwarber but with a better arm. Contreras/Knizner don't look great and seem to be a step down from Yadi the ancient mariner. On top of that they put O'Neill in CF early in the year and he was terrible vs his gold glove look in LF.

Stl fans have been used to great defense making the pitching play up and we simply don't have it this year. The "philosophical difference" with Shildt and Mozeliak were clearly about this all-bat approach
   34. The Duke Posted: June 02, 2023 at 04:34 PM (#6131295)
And I will add it's painful to watch the Cubs heading the opposite direction with focus on bringing in good fielding players. I feel like the Cubs will be formidable in a couple years if they stay on this path
   35. cardsfanboy Posted: June 02, 2023 at 06:02 PM (#6131306)
I think Gorman has been better than advertised defensively at both second and third, he's not good, and nobody thought he would be, but he's been making the plays he's supposed to make. Edman I feel just needs to get comfortable, he hasn't been good this year, but he's being moved around more than he was last year. Mercado is the weird one for me, the guy has historically been a plus fielder, and he's being given a chance to play everyday for the Cardinals when he signed to originally be a bench guy or a man in the minors, and his defense has been god awful.

Contreras can throw out runners with the best of them, but the other aspect of his game is lacking, meanwhile Knizner is just the opposite, he fields just fine, but not the same arm ability. Nootbaar still looks solid+ in the outfield.

You almost have to assume Edman and Mercado will rebound with their defense. Basically as long as DeJong is the starting shortstop, and if we can get our outfield healthy enough, the infield will return to elite status with Edman being the second baseman, and the outfield will end up being slightly above average with Walker/Yepez being the true weak links defensively. Finding playing time for Donovan will be difficult, but if it's at third/second then he's above average also.

The entire team started poorly at all aspects of the game, there is no reason to think those aspects won't return to their established level as the season works it's way out, and certainty figures into their roles.
   36. salvomania Posted: June 02, 2023 at 06:10 PM (#6131308)
I think Gorman has been better than advertised defensively at both second

I second that. There have been a number of times I've been watching Cardinals games this year and have seen a play maybe a little harder than "routine" and then realized it was Gorman making it (they also play Donovan & Edman at 2B) and thought, "hmmm, not bad..."
   37. salvomania Posted: June 02, 2023 at 06:15 PM (#6131310)
Contreras can throw out runners with the best of them, but the other aspect of his game is lacking,

You forgot about the *other* other aspect of his game---hitting! Which is the reason the Cardinals signed him!

Knizner still out OPS+ing Conteras, 91 to 83 (.708 to .664) and out bWARing him (0.6 to 0.4) despite Contreras's 218-to-82 PA advantage in playing time.
   38. cardsfanboy Posted: June 02, 2023 at 06:30 PM (#6131314)
I think Contreras bat will come around, it had a small bounceback, but then the entire team forgot how to hit for about a week.
   39. Howie Menckel Posted: June 02, 2023 at 07:14 PM (#6131315)
so my Orioles preseason bet to win the World Series at 80-1 odds is off to a fine start.
DraftKings now has them down to only 35-1.

so they are offering to let me "cash out" and walk away with a profit in hand.

tough call - take back my $2 bet AND the 15-cent profit on top of it and ballgame over, or "let it ride"?

lol.

apparently they have algorithms, and it's not worth their while to make the effort to just post offerings to, for example, bets of $1,000 and up, where a gambler might have to take stock of his options....
   40. JJ1986 Posted: June 02, 2023 at 07:27 PM (#6131317)
2) #17 is a leftie. AS only once, received just 1 CYA vote in his career ... been on the IL all year.
Sounds like Danny Duffy, but I don't think that's possible.
   41. The Duke Posted: June 02, 2023 at 07:46 PM (#6131318)
Danny Duffy is 26th which surprised me
   42. The Duke Posted: June 02, 2023 at 07:49 PM (#6131319)
Chris sale out again after BBTF jinxed him
   43. cardsfanboy Posted: June 02, 2023 at 07:51 PM (#6131320)
Cardinals with an early 5-0 lead Donovan and Arenado with homeruns, Cardinals scored all five runs with two outs.
   44. salvomania Posted: June 02, 2023 at 08:09 PM (#6131321)
I think Contreras bat will come around, it had a small bounceback, but then the entire team forgot how to hit for about a week.

Contreras has been good offensively for exactly one week this season: April 16-23, when he went 10-for-23 with 7 of his 23 XBH on the year.

For the rest of the season, he is .189/.265/.343 (that's an OPS+ of about 65) in 188 PA---a third of a season---with just 3 HR and 14 RBI, and much of THAT (2 homers and 6 RBI) came in a single game on May 18.

Subtract that one week + that one game from Contreras' line, and he has 1 homer and 8 RBI in 183 PA hitting in the middle of the Cardinals' lineup.

I know that's cherry picking, but cherry pick any other hitter's best week plus one other game and see what you have left, and I'd be shocked if you could come up with someone who's been consistently worse compared to expectations than Contreras so far in 2023. All you have to know is that Andrew Knizner has out-hit Contreras in 2023.
   45. The Duke Posted: June 02, 2023 at 08:21 PM (#6131322)
Pitching availability at the deadline seems thin. Will the Phillies make Nola and Wheeler available ? Rodriguez and Sale are off the table. Oakland /KC don't have anyone do they ? The White Sox will try to make a run precluding trades. The cardinals maybe should trade Flaherty and Monty but it's not in their DNA to give up.

Hendricks and Stroman ?

Not clear where the upgrades might be coming from in a league where 25-27 teams are still in it
   46. salvomania Posted: June 02, 2023 at 08:39 PM (#6131324)
7 of his 23 XBH

I need to correct my math on this one: 7 of his *17* XBH on the year were from April 16-23.
   47. Froot Loops Posted: June 02, 2023 at 08:41 PM (#6131325)
I know we're not supposed to care about pitcher wins, but it's cute that Jordan Lyles is 0-9 already. Can we care about pitcher losses?
   48. salvomania Posted: June 02, 2023 at 08:43 PM (#6131326)
Sort of hilarious: Red Sox have their first "scheduled" doubleheader since 1976 tomorrow... and they got rained out tonight.

The Rays are only in Boston one more time in 2023: the Red Sox' last two home games of the year, Sep.26-27.
   49. cardsfanboy Posted: June 02, 2023 at 08:44 PM (#6131327)
Flaherty through five, not the most efficient as he's at 84 pitches, but 6 strikeouts does add to that number (4 hits, no walks)
   50. cardsfanboy Posted: June 02, 2023 at 08:49 PM (#6131328)
I still care about pitcher wins, and considering how many discussions we have about whether someone will ever have 300, 250 or even 200 again, I think the site still cares about it. But of course the problem is, that in today's game, a quality start is probably a much more important stat, and it's not even given mainstream recognition (it's not on bb-ref primary stat block) except to ridicule it. (how to tell if the person you are talking to, is a moron when it comes to baseball? They point out that a quality start could potentially be a 4.50 era)
   51. salvomania Posted: June 02, 2023 at 08:49 PM (#6131329)
Jordan Walker, looking to build on his 1-for-2 performance so far tonight after being recalled from AAA, takes a 3-2 pitch below the zone for a called strike three. Hate seeing a good eye being not just unrewarded, but punished.

But the dude is 6'7" and I don't think the umps always account for that when they see the pitch come in.

This Pirates pitcher has now walked the bases loaded despite getting the gift call on Walker.

Gorman up, can put a 5-0 game out of reach here...
   53. salvomania Posted: June 02, 2023 at 08:54 PM (#6131331)
Man, Gorman took a fat fastball right down the middle for a called strike three. Apparently expecting something else.

So you are saying he's the new Judge? I can get behind that. :)

The Rays are only in Boston one more time in 2023: the Red Sox' last two home games of the year, Sep.26-27.

Apparently the teams have a scheduled day off this Monday, so they'll make up the game then. That said, there's rain the forecast for tomorrow's DH, too...

one swing and the game can be tied...

Huh, looks like it's coming back to bite them as Cardinal relievers can't get anyone out...

Pirates come back from 5-0 to make it 6-5.

You called it. Cards' pen blows a 5-0 lead...

Pirates coming through with the big hits where the Cardinals couldn't.

Now 7-5.

Not Gallegos's best night: 5 batters faced, four earned runs, plus allowed two inherited runners to score.

I don't LIKE the idea of relievers "having to know their roles," and all things being equal I'd take the one that doesn't.

but you've gotta know your players.

both Harvey WAS and Gallegos STL are coming off SV, and both tonight came in with one out in the 7th inning and runners on second and third - so no SV for them. in possibly unrelated news, both immediately escorted the inherited runners home, and yes Gallegos piled on top of that....
   68. cardsfanboy Posted: June 02, 2023 at 10:01 PM (#6131346)
Gallegos isn't the default closer for the Cardinals though, that is Helsey. The team have been using both Gallegos and Helsey to close out games, but Helsey is considered the closer. Gallegos, Helsey and Cabrera are all used interchangeable by the Cardinals since only Helsey is really capable of going back to back days, the other two struggle in back to back games a bit more. (not applicable to todays game of course as it's been two days) With Hicks challenging for playing time by being pretty good lately.

in a 5-1 game, I'm not sure Gallegos is my go to guy, unless it was pre-planned because of the multiple days off. (mind you, Gallegos might have thought he won the save role with him getting three saves last week)
   69. salvomania Posted: June 02, 2023 at 10:04 PM (#6131348)
Pirates' announcer convinced that Cardinals' CF just aggressively cut off McCutcheon's line drive to left-center and got the ball quickly back into second because he didn't want his team to surrender McCutcheon's 400th career double... and not to prevent an insurance run from getting into scoring position.

"Everyone is aware of where McCutcheon stands, see how quickly Edman got to the ball and backhanded it like a shortstop and fired it back in."

Paulie D cues one off the end of his bat about 50mph just past the 1B glove along the RF line for a two-out single.

Let's see what Jordan Walker does: extend the game, or end it right here.

EDIT: on a 3-2 count, weak three-hopper to 2b to end the game.

Gallegos has 4 SV since May 20 - including in each of his previous three appearances - while Helsley has 1 SV in that span (with three non-SV appearances).

for the season, saves:
Gallegos 7
Helsey 6

so you're telling me that Helsley is the durable one - AND never mind that Gallegos is getting most of the saves of late, and now has more this season than Helsley does.

how many more SV in a row would Gallegos need to move you off "Helsley is considered the closer" ?

the closermonkey.com website that obsessively follows such things also for some crazy reason calls this a "bullpen my committee" - which means no one is "the closer." perhaps we need to correct them - but warning, it may not be easy, given the facts at hand....

Two series in a row in which I get to hear the visiting announcers talking about the "best win of the year" in a game against the Cardinals.

Ladies and Gentlemen, your 2023 Cardinals: often terrible, never boring.
   75. frannyzoo Posted: June 02, 2023 at 10:22 PM (#6131356)
Tonight has been, as all Mets fans knew going in, a long (six innings to this point) meditation on: "Why did we let Bassitt go just to get pitchers like Verlander?" And you're thinking "well, 'pitchers like Verlander' don't come along that often." And I'd agree with you if we were in the early/middle 2010s or so. I might agree with you in October, if there is an October, while Bassitt struggled, as we all knew going into tonight. Still, why didn't "we" just resign Bassitt?

By "meditation" I guess I really meant "bothersome thought that will never leave." So instead, I'll just wish Bassitt's partner and soon-to-be offspring the best of births. Go birth.

Justin Verlander’s 117 pitches are the most in a game by a pitcher at age 40 or older since R.A. Dickey threw 121 on 8/30/17

It’s the most by a 40+ old non-knuckleballer since Bartolo Colon also threw 121 on 7/28/14…for the Mets
...............

nothing will ever beat Nolan Ryan and Steve Carlton flipflopping for weeks (months?) for all the all-time K lead, but with teammates both heating up, it adds some intrigue

MLB K LEADERS

10. Greg Maddux+ (23) 3371 5008.1
11. Phil Niekro+ (24) 3342 5404.0
12. MAX SCHERZER (16, 38) 3241 2729.2
13. JUSTIN VERLANDER (18, 40) 3228 3193.0

note that Max has more than half as many IP as Niekro - but just barely

While I understand rooting for a pitcher throwing the most in a game by someone age 40 or older, okay, I'm being a bit gracious there, I'd rather, and do, root more for younger versions of that age 40 or older pitcher. E.g., Verlander as a Tiger, Scherzer as a Tiger, Greg Maddux as a...well, there it gets a bit more complicated. It often does.

Congrats to Mr. Bassitt and further congrats!

First baseman Jon Singleton is being called up by the Milwaukee Brewers, according to sources familiar with the situation. Singleton is now set to return to the majors for the first time since 2015. An amazing comeback.

...........

[Singleton's 2015 teammates included .... wow, their ONLY batter all season not in their 20s was 31-year-old Jedd Lowrie. PS included Roberto Hernandez, Scott Kazmir, Scott Feldman, Pat Neshek, Chad Qualls, Luke Gregerson, and Oliver Perez.

Singleton will play the role of over-the-hill backup 1B previously played in 2023 by Luke Voit and Darin Ruf.]

Many posts ago: And I will add it's painful to watch the Cubs heading the opposite direction with focus on bringing in good fielding players.

Well, let's see if the Cubs keep following through on this before getting too "worried." They extended Nico which is part recognition which is part recognition of his defensive prowess and part because he's pretty cheap. Swanson's been excellent; Bellinger has been fine but he's just one year. Other than Nico, we haven't developed good defensive players although hopefully PCA's speed will translate to good CF defense. Happ's back to being bad; Suzuki's average, Wisdom is poor; I doubt Morel will ever be good unless maybe he's left alone at a position. So Swanson and Hoerner will be there for several years but this team could really use an Arenado (duh) or at least a Hayes type to be a "dominant" defensive team. (PCA as the next, oh, Steve Finley or Mike Cameron would be fine too.)

funny part to me is that if you had asked a few hours earlier, I would have just stared blankly at the screen. but then I saw this note right before your query:

06.02... José Quintana (ribs) is scheduled to throw live batting practice on Monday.
Spin: It's a big step for Quintana, who required bone graft surgery on his ribs in March. The southpaw began throwing off flat ground at the end of April and has made steady progress until this point. He's still trending toward a return in July, potentially providing a boost to a Mets' rotation which has begun to find its sea legs in recent days.

It took 24 seasons -- well, 23.3 -- to get to 100 Giants splash homers into McCovey Cove.

-- In that time, the stadium has had four names, as many as the Giants have had managers.
-- All 100 homers have been hit by left-handers, including switch-hitters batting left-handed.
-- Seventeen splash homers came in the first two seasons, 15 of them by Barry Bonds. The other two were hit by the same guy: You guessed it, Felipe Crespo.
-- In total, Bonds hit 35, the last on Aug. 8, 2007.
-- Brandon Belt is second with 10, two more than longtime teammate Pablo Sandoval.
-- Tied for fourth place with five are current Giants LaMonte Wade Jr., who hit No. 100 last night, and Mike Yastrzemski. Also Denard Span, who spent only two seasons as a Giant and generally speaking wasn't a home-run hitter. Brandon Crawford is one behind that group.
-- Joc Pederson comes next with three, and no one else has more than two.
-- Onetime Giant Livan Hernandez is one of three pitchers to have given up two (no pitcher has given up more than that). The others are Colorado's John Thomson and San Diego's Chris Paddack.
-- Bonds is the only player to hit two in one game, and he did it twice. The only other instance of two in one game was by Yastrzemski and Steven Duggar.
-- 2015 was the only season in which none were hit, making the gap between Belt's homers on Sept. 25, 2014, and June 8, 2016, the longest time between splash homers.

Thanks esseff, when I saw the headline earlier, a lot of that trivia stuff was popping/questioning in my head (especially the number from Bonds)

Is that accurate? I though LaMonte hit two in one game earlier in the week(or maybe two weeks ago)?

edit: obviously not, as he hasn't had a two hr game this season.

edit2: it was Jack Suwinski of the Pirates.

Contreras with a homerun in the second, not sure how bad the rain is, but the game is currently in a delay. Hopefully that hr doesn't get wiped out. I really need to get my proxy server working for these games.

Cardinals announcers are saying that there is pretty much no storm. (The pitchers for both teams are staying in the bullpen instead of escaping from the rain)

mlb.com from Friday night in the Phoenix area:

"The D-backs played crisp baseball and got another outstanding performance from starter Merrill Kelly to beat the Braves, 3-2, in front of a raucous crowd.

“Awesome,” Kelly said of the atmosphere. “That seventh inning, especially. [Braves fans] started doing the [tomahawk] chop, and our fans didn't like that too much. That was some of the better energy I felt in here, and games like that are why we do this. It's really good energy. It's a really good team. It's good to see, you know, not only their fans into it, but it's good to see our fans into it.”

The last time the D-backs won six straight games was Aug. 12-18, 2020.

.............

[apparently the Braves' 8-12 mark in their last 20 games hasn't calmed their impudent fan base.]
   93. cardsfanboy Posted: June 03, 2023 at 07:39 PM (#6131430)
Pirates take the series with that victory.

It's not the most impressive stat, especially when you consider it's just a .272 average, but Walker has a hit in 18 of the 22 games he's played in. (18 out of 21 he's started)
   94. The Duke Posted: June 03, 2023 at 08:04 PM (#6131432)
The Cardinals are now that team that other teams look forward to playing. It's hard to get my head around that.

The fans were excited about four series against the Reds, Indians, Royals and Pirates. Here's our chance to make up ground !

If we can't beat these teams consistently maybe we are a sub .500 team.

#84 ... has a pitcher ever hit one? (Either for or against the Giants) I can imagine MadBum might have come close once or twice. Or Ohtani of course. (Or Rick Ankiel but not as a pitcher.)
