Will the Saudis do more of this ? I could definitely see it in soccer. Maybe they've already done that but I wouldn't be surprised to see the Saudis buy a premium brand like Manchester United.
Will they build a new league to compete with one of our big four ? Not likely. Why? Saudis really don't come here. They travel en masse to London so they follow golf, soccer, car racing etc. they have a hard time getting into the US. Visas are hard, they get stopped at customs. They don't really spend a lot of time here. They used to be here a lot at our universities (and Canada ). But I think they've stopped a lot of that after 9-11.
So maybe a better question is - does Trump have a grudge against anyone. Well, he wasn't allowed to buy into the NFL, so that's a possibility. The Nationals owners were asses to him so that's possible. Will they buy a team ? No they would go the LIV route and build a new league. One could easily see Trump as the NFL commish for his Saudi friends
No. Wrong. The Saudis are investing in many other ventures in order to continue to make money hand over fist when the reliance on oil drops. It's a brilliant strategy and one they have made quite clearly. If sporting teams/organisations are happy to sell out to them, then they are willing to buy in. It has nothing to do with how many Saudis visit the good ol' USA.
Like the Chinese, the Saudis are all about the coin baby. Once you learn to ignore the human rights issues and get over your(not you specifically) own prejudices and realise it's just about making money at any cost, then it's much easier to understand.
The three previous Cardinals baserunners this game have all been thrown out on the bases, so they have 0 LOB so far (Rangers have left 9).
Well that explains everything! I kid.....
Do the Cardinals hang on?
The way this year has gone, the answer would be "no."
Not only are they 6-14 in one-run games, they have an obscene number of losses in games they were leading late...
EDIT: first pitch by Helsley is lined just foul into the RF corner (whew!)
That looks like the 13th CG this year but I don't know how to find if any were losses
In 6 of Flaherty's 13 starts he's allowed 0 or 1 earned runs (in one of those starts he allowed 2 total runs).
He actually has a sub-3.00 ERA in all his starts if you remove a 10-run shellacking he received at the hands of the Dodgers.
I'm not frightened when he takes the mound these days, unlike the past couple years when he's been ineffective while battling injuries.
Yes. It has been. Ernie Shore did it, of course, though he didn't allow the baserunner, so he's not credited with anything anymore. Among record book no-hitters, Mark Buehrle did it in his non-perfect game no-hitters (he walked Sammy Sosa, then picked him off).
funny, I used to gripe about relievers whining about "I don't know my role."
all things being equal, give me the RP that isn't so damn rigid.
that said, not sure there are many of them out there - and if so, as management, you have to go to war with the weapons you have and not the weapons you wish you had.
countless bullpens this year with seemingly totally random usage decisions - MIA, CHI, COL, LAD, PHI, WAS, ARI - and that's just the NL. it often hasn't ended well - not even with a pen like LAD with multiple really good relievers.
There are about 30 people who have won both ROY and MVP but only 7, who are eligible for the HOF, have not been inducted
Can you name the 7 eligible players who have not been voted into HOF:
Can you name the 8 active players who have won both a ROY and MVP award. There is one very hard one on that list (at least imo )
Trout in 2012 and Judge in 2017 both finished 2nd in MVP voting in their ROY year.
Retired but not yet eligible ROY/MVP winners:
Will be HOF - Pujols, Ichiro, Posey
Won't be HOF - Pedroia, Braun
Yes.
You've got 4 of the 7 who are eligible for the Hall but we're not voted in after they became eligible
There have only been 10 guys who have hit .400+ this late into a season since 1941 including Arraez. Six of them are HOFrs
Can you name them ?
* same season
Shohei Ohtani
Aaron Judge
Cody Bellinger
Kris Bryant
Jose Abreu
Mike Trout
Bryce Harper
Buster Posey
Dustin Pedroia
Ryan Braun
Justin Verlander
Ryan Howard
Ichiro Suzuki*
Albert Pujols
Jeff Bagwell - HOF
Jose Canseco
Cal Ripken Jr - HOF
Andre Dawson - HOF
Fred Lynn*
Thurman Munson
Johnny Bench - HOF
Rod Carew - HOF
Dick Allen
Pete Rose
Willie McCovey - HOF
Orlando Cepeda - HOF
Frank Robinson - HOF
Willie Mays - HOF
Don Newcombe
Jackie Robinson - HOF
1977 Rod Carew (.388) - July 10th
1980 George Brett (.390) - Sep 19th
1993 John Olerud (.363) - Aug 2nd
1993 Andres Galarraga (.370) - July 5th
1997 Tony Gwynn (.372) - July 14th
1997 Larry Walker (.366) - July 17th
2000 Nomar Garciaparra (.372) - July 20th
2000 Todd Helton (.372) - June 10th*
2008 Chipper Jones (.364) - June 18th
2009 Joe Mauer (.365) - June 21st
2023 Luis Arraez (???) - at least June 7th
* Helton last ended a game day at .400 on June 10th, but he was hitting .400 in the middle of a game as late as August 21st.
1986 Wade Boggs (.357) - June 7th
Carew, olerud, galaragga, Walker and chipper are correct
Boggs is not correct
So that leaves three guys: two hall of famers and one guy who racked up 39 bWAR and 2100 hits
Remember this is hitting .400 at this date in the season (63 games )
Edit: Brett in 1980, for example, was at .400 after his teams 148th game and his personal 104th game, which is much longer than Arraez being at .400 after his teams 63rd game and his personal 58th game.
Paul O'Neill in 1994 is the non HOFer, still hitting .405 after June 16th, his teams 63rd game.
One who does is Rod Carew 1983, though he only finished at .339. He was hitting .427 on 6-7-83. A month earlier he was at .500 (48 for 96).
Getting back to #200 ... anybody know of other players who walked in their first PA? You might be able to find it in stathead.
(Note: I'm not dissing Arraez. I'm having fun following his season too)
Even Williams 41 ... he was under 400 from team games 13 through 32, fell below 400 again in game 73, bounced back in 74 but back below in 75 through 91. He didn't dip below again but did reach exactly 400 with 2 games to go, going 6 for 8. Even he went hitless in 30 games (3-9 with a BB as a PH).
Just out of curiosity, Ted
career 344/482/634
as PH. 297/447/535 (8 IBB in 144 PA)
Even Williams took a big hit when PHing. (Note seems there are a hundred or so games where we don't have positional splits so he probably pinch-hit a bit more than that.
A switch hitter too. With apparently similar power from both sides. He's like the six million dollar man
Would just love a season with someone getting 20+ again. Parks are too small for anyone to ever get close to career triples records. Those old parks with those massive deep alleys were made for triples. Maybe Cincy can trade him to SF, they have a great triples alley in their park.
Is there anywhere we can find which parks yield the most triples? Yearly? last 5 years? Obviously heavily dependent on the home team players.
Charlie Morton has plunked 159 batters in his career; this is tied for 14th all-time. Morton has thrown less than 1900 innings in his career. Nobody ahead of him on the list is under 3000 innings. The pitcher he's tied with is Roger Clemens; Morton has about 38% as many innings as Clemens.
Don't dig in against Charlie Morton.
A big hint: He started Game 1 of a World Series in the prior year and won it going 8 innings. The losing pitcher is still active.
Updated #MLB rule-changes impact
TIME OF GAME
2:37 (2023); 3:05 (2022)
RUNS PER GAME
9.3 (2023); 8.7 (2022)
BATTING AVERAGE
.247 (2023); .242 (2022)
BASERUNNING
1.8 stolen bases per game (2023); 1.4 (2022)
STOLEN BASE SUCCESS
79.7% (2023, highest in history); 75.4% (2022)
.247 (2023); .242 (2022)
Not that it's a big difference but, in terms of the impact of the new rules, it's probably more important that BABIP has gone up from 290 to 297. HR and K rates are also up s tiny bit which has some impact on BA.
BABIP by type, 2022 then 2023
GB 236 242
FB 101 097
LD 618 633
bunts 523 515
(quick estimate suggests the bunt rate is about the same)
So first guess is that 2B out of short RF (LD BABIP) is more important than bannning the shift per se. How do folks feel about returning the shift as long as they are on the dirt? (Just curious)
Eric Hosmer is available. :-)
Granted, I would not entrust my wellbeing to the Phillies' LF either.
So is Voit, unless I missed a signing someplace. (and considering how well Gaby Sanchez did with a change of scenery,(and Bellinger) it's not a potential bad signing)
The cardinals have Luken Baker to trade. I'd trade him for quintana
When is Quintana going to pitch again? It's still probably at least three weeks away for the majors. (and the sooner he shows up, the more likely he'll be used as a short inning starter until he develops) best case scenario is he's a major league ready pitcher by second week of July. Note: I'm a fan of his, and thought the Mets made the signing of the off season with him, but the he wouldn't affect the Cardinals playoff chances. Right now, the Cardinals need to just start advancing runners with less than two outs, that has killed us all season. It's not the quality of the team in any way, it's just that we can't advance runners for ####. We will get a double, a walk to lead off an inning, and the inning ends with men on first and second.
I'm a huge Quintana fan, so I don't disagree with your trade, but we failed to sign him when we had a chance, so I think the team might undervalue him as a whole. At the same time, our last 10 or so games, wasn't about our pitching. Our offense, which is actually good, had a horrible 10 or so days. Mind you, this team needs to figure out how to advance runners.
On an unrelated note. This is one of the few times I've been able to watch a post game show, and I hope that whatever future broadcaster we get, realizes that Alexa Datt is incredible. She's been controlling Al in a way that is incredible and bringing the data and the game.
