Raise your hand if you are flipping to the Reds game to watch De La Cruz . Wow, is he exciting

De La Cruz I'm on deck circle but 2 outs already
   203. The Duke Posted: June 07, 2023 at 09:10 PM (#6131913)
De La Cruz up with 1 on 2 out , tied game in 7th.

A little chin music to welcome him to the game followed by a K

#191, you may have missed the humor. Not great humor, not the best humor, just BBTF humor, as the original post was made without seeing #180.

196. The LIV thing is all Trump - related. This was payback for taking his PGA tournaments away from him. This is Trumps modus operandi which is why people are so afraid of him.

Will the Saudis do more of this ? I could definitely see it in soccer. Maybe they've already done that but I wouldn't be surprised to see the Saudis buy a premium brand like Manchester United.

Will they build a new league to compete with one of our big four ? Not likely. Why? Saudis really don't come here. They travel en masse to London so they follow golf, soccer, car racing etc. they have a hard time getting into the US. Visas are hard, they get stopped at customs. They don't really spend a lot of time here. They used to be here a lot at our universities (and Canada ). But I think they've stopped a lot of that after 9-11.

So maybe a better question is - does Trump have a grudge against anyone. Well, he wasn't allowed to buy into the NFL, so that's a possibility. The Nationals owners were asses to him so that's possible. Will they buy a team ? No they would go the LIV route and build a new league. One could easily see Trump as the NFL commish for his Saudi friends

The Reds have something going on.
   208. The Duke Posted: June 07, 2023 at 09:39 PM (#6131919)
The rangers pitcher has faced the minimum number of batters through 6 and has thrown only 61 pitches. He has given up a single, double, and a HBP. Any guesses as to how he has done that ?

This is a reminder to take your medication.

On a related note does facing the minimum but not getting a perfect game have a "name". Has it ever been done ?
   211. The Duke Posted: June 07, 2023 at 09:49 PM (#6131922)
Jon gray at 21 batters through 7

No. Wrong. The Saudis are investing in many other ventures in order to continue to make money hand over fist when the reliance on oil drops. It's a brilliant strategy and one they have made quite clearly. If sporting teams/organisations are happy to sell out to them, then they are willing to buy in. It has nothing to do with how many Saudis visit the good ol' USA.

Like the Chinese, the Saudis are all about the coin baby. Once you learn to ignore the human rights issues and get over your(not you specifically) own prejudices and realise it's just about making money at any cost, then it's much easier to understand.
   213. The Duke Posted: June 07, 2023 at 10:05 PM (#6131924)
Well they are investing but not that much in the US. I'd have to look closer at the math but the Saudi state views the US as a bit of hostile environment. They do invest in shares with their sovereign wealth funds but that is different than owning/controlling companies. I worked for the Saudis for a while and they certainly were investing in the US 20-25 years ago, my sense was they shifted to Asia and Europe over a decade ago.
   214. salvomania Posted: June 07, 2023 at 10:07 PM (#6131925)
Cardinals just went ahead of the Rangers 1-0 on a shockingly unexpected 8th inning homer by Alec Burleson off of Jon Gray.

The three previous Cardinals baserunners this game have all been thrown out on the bases, so they have 0 LOB so far (Rangers have left 9).
   215. salvomania Posted: June 07, 2023 at 10:11 PM (#6131926)
Jekyll-and-Hyde (often within the same game) Jack Flaherty has walked 5 batters for the fourth time this season, and he's allowed a cumulative 5 runs in those fours starts (21 innings).
   216. The Duke Posted: June 07, 2023 at 10:11 PM (#6131927)
As an aside the coolest business moment I ever had was negotiating a huge oil deal on behalf of my Saudi company with their Chinese counterpart in Beijing. There were three groups in the room. A group of us Americans who worked for the Saudis, a few very high level Saudis and the senior managers of the Chinese company. Each side had translators because the Chinese didn't speak Arabic or English and our Saudi friends had good but limited English skills. So each time for instance I would say something a translator in Arabic would translate for the Saudis and a Chinese interpreter would do the same for the Chinese. And on and on. Exhausting but very cool. It must have been what deal making was like in the olden days
   217. The Duke Posted: June 07, 2023 at 10:14 PM (#6131928)
Jon gray went 23 straight batters before losing his "imperfect game" on the 24th batter. It was a HR so now he's in the 9th still pitching but losing 1-0. So instead of an in-perfect game he might get a complete game loss which has to be super rare these days
   218. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: June 07, 2023 at 10:16 PM (#6131929)
I worked for the Saudis for a while

Well that explains everything! I kid.....
   219. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: June 07, 2023 at 10:20 PM (#6131931)
Gray goes the full 9, throwing a 4 hitter, 1 ER, 12K...really nice outing. The one time Texas doesn't score 6-8 runs....
   220. salvomania Posted: June 07, 2023 at 10:20 PM (#6131932)
OK, Cardinals up 1-0 going into the bottom of the 9th vs. the Rangers.

Do the Cardinals hang on?

The way this year has gone, the answer would be "no."

Not only are they 6-14 in one-run games, they have an obscene number of losses in games they were leading late...

EDIT: first pitch by Helsley is lined just foul into the RF corner (whew!)
   221. The Duke Posted: June 07, 2023 at 10:27 PM (#6131934)
Jon Gray gets the CG loss. A rarity for sure

That looks like the 13th CG this year but I don't know how to find if any were losses
   222. salvomania Posted: June 07, 2023 at 10:29 PM (#6131935)
Cardinals hang on to win, 1-0, as Gray goes the distance in a masterful 12K performance in a losing cause.

In 6 of Flaherty's 13 starts he's allowed 0 or 1 earned runs (in one of those starts he allowed 2 total runs).

He actually has a sub-3.00 ERA in all his starts if you remove a 10-run shellacking he received at the hands of the Dodgers.

I'm not frightened when he takes the mound these days, unlike the past couple years when he's been ineffective while battling injuries.
   223. Hombre Brotani Posted: June 07, 2023 at 10:31 PM (#6131937)
Mike Trout steals a homer in the top of the 4th, hits one in the bottom of the 4th.

212. We are both right. FDI in the US declined radically from 2010 to 2020 and has now started ramping up for the last three years. Still way below the peak but dramatic increases in the last 24 months

Yes. It has been. Ernie Shore did it, of course, though he didn't allow the baserunner, so he's not credited with anything anymore. Among record book no-hitters, Mark Buehrle did it in his non-perfect game no-hitters (he walked Sammy Sosa, then picked him off).

Cubs bullpen collapses again.

Leiter in the 6th (!)

funny, I used to gripe about relievers whining about "I don't know my role."

all things being equal, give me the RP that isn't so damn rigid.

that said, not sure there are many of them out there - and if so, as management, you have to go to war with the weapons you have and not the weapons you wish you had.

countless bullpens this year with seemingly totally random usage decisions - MIA, CHI, COL, LAD, PHI, WAS, ARI - and that's just the NL. it often hasn't ended well - not even with a pen like LAD with multiple really good relievers.
   228. The Duke Posted: June 08, 2023 at 12:15 AM (#6131957)
Was the Ernie Shore game the one that Ruth walked a guy and got thrown out of game ?
   229. The Duke Posted: June 08, 2023 at 12:35 AM (#6131960)
Corbin Carroll muscling his way into both ROY and MVP discussion. There have been only 2 people who have won both in the same year and really only one as I would asterisk the other one. Who are they ?

There are about 30 people who have won both ROY and MVP but only 7, who are eligible for the HOF, have not been inducted

Can you name the 7 eligible players who have not been voted into HOF:

Can you name the 8 active players who have won both a ROY and MVP award. There is one very hard one on that list (at least imo )

   230. The Duke Posted: June 08, 2023 at 12:37 AM (#6131961)
Luis Arraez batting .400. That's an interesting development
   231. Booey Posted: June 08, 2023 at 12:39 AM (#6131962)
#229 - Fred Lynn in 1975 and Ichiro! in 2001.

Trout in 2012 and Judge in 2017 both finished 2nd in MVP voting in their ROY year.
   232. Booey Posted: June 08, 2023 at 12:44 AM (#6131963)
Active ROY/MVP winners - Verlander, Harper, Trout, Kris Bryant, Jose Abreu, Ohtani, Judge
   233. Booey Posted: June 08, 2023 at 01:14 AM (#6131967)
Oh, Cody Bellinger is the other active ROY/MVP winner.
   234. Booey Posted: June 08, 2023 at 01:19 AM (#6131968)
Eligible non-HOF ROY/MVP - Don Newcombe, Thurman Munson, Pete Rose (are you counting him as eligible?), Jose Canseco

Retired but not yet eligible ROY/MVP winners:

Will be HOF - Pujols, Ichiro, Posey

Won't be HOF - Pedroia, Braun

Yes.

Booey, well done you got the two people who won them in the same year and all eight active players who have won both

You've got 4 of the 7 who are eligible for the Hall but we're not voted in after they became eligible

   237. The Duke Posted: June 08, 2023 at 10:06 AM (#6131994)
And for the next quiz, coming from an MLB article:

There have only been 10 guys who have hit .400+ this late into a season since 1941 including Arraez. Six of them are HOFrs

Can you name them ?

   238. Booey Posted: June 08, 2023 at 11:30 AM (#6132005)
Duke - Here's all the ROY/MVP winners I could find. Looks like eligible non-HOFers I missed were Ryan Howard (I should've remembered that one) and Dick Allen. Who is the 3rd one?

* same season

   239. The Duke Posted: June 08, 2023 at 12:00 PM (#6132010)
Fred lynn of course

There have only been 10 guys who have hit .400+ this late into a season since 1941 including Arraez. Six of them are HOFrs
Todd Helton, Tony Gwynn, George Brett
   241. Booey Posted: June 08, 2023 at 12:14 PM (#6132014)
#237 - There's more than that, cuz I was looking up some high average seasons I remembered yesterday when I was killing time at the airport and I found 11 (and posted some of them in the Arraez thread). I figured there's probably several more that I missed. Here's some that qualify though (final average in parenthesis). I'm going by the last game night they ended still at .400 or above.

1977 Rod Carew (.388) - July 10th
1980 George Brett (.390) - Sep 19th
1993 John Olerud (.363) - Aug 2nd
1993 Andres Galarraga (.370) - July 5th
1997 Tony Gwynn (.372) - July 14th
1997 Larry Walker (.366) - July 17th
2000 Nomar Garciaparra (.372) - July 20th
2000 Todd Helton (.372) - June 10th*
2008 Chipper Jones (.364) - June 18th
2009 Joe Mauer (.365) - June 21st
2023 Luis Arraez (???) - at least June 7th

* Helton last ended a game day at .400 on June 10th, but he was hitting .400 in the middle of a game as late as August 21st.

   242. Booey Posted: June 08, 2023 at 12:16 PM (#6132015)
#239 - Oh, duh. For some reason he didn't enter my mind since he was already the answer to one of the previous trivia questions. ;-)
   243. Booey Posted: June 08, 2023 at 12:40 PM (#6132018)
Looks like Boggs is another:

1986 Wade Boggs (.357) - June 7th
   244. The Duke Posted: June 08, 2023 at 12:58 PM (#6132019)
Gwynn in 1997 is correct. Brett and Helton are no

Carew, olerud, galaragga, Walker and chipper are correct

Boggs is not correct

So that leaves three guys: two hall of famers and one guy who racked up 39 bWAR and 2100 hits

Remember this is hitting .400 at this date in the season (63 games )

   245. Booey Posted: June 08, 2023 at 01:05 PM (#6132020)
It's a weirdly phrased question, cuz some of these guys weren't at .400 or above exactly 63 games into the season, but were at much later points, which seems like it should count.

Edit: Brett in 1980, for example, was at .400 after his teams 148th game and his personal 104th game, which is much longer than Arraez being at .400 after his teams 63rd game and his personal 58th game.
   246. Booey Posted: June 08, 2023 at 01:09 PM (#6132021)
Hmmm, I didn't notice that Mauer missed the first 22 games of 2009, so while he was still over .400 after his teams 71st game, it was only his 46th game.
   247. Booey Posted: June 08, 2023 at 01:24 PM (#6132024)
Musial in 1948 is one of the missing HOFers (still hitting .403 after July 18th, his 76th game).

Paul O'Neill in 1994 is the non HOFer, still hitting .405 after June 16th, his teams 63rd game.
   248. Rally Posted: June 08, 2023 at 01:41 PM (#6132025)
Ok, Brett started slow and climbed above .400 late in the year, so doesn’t meet the criteria.

One who does is Rod Carew 1983, though he only finished at .339. He was hitting .427 on 6-7-83. A month earlier he was at .500 (48 for 96).
   249. Rally Posted: June 08, 2023 at 01:43 PM (#6132026)
Carew in his .388 year was not over .400 at this point in the season. He went over .400 in late June and stayed there till mid July.
   250. The Duke Posted: June 08, 2023 at 03:56 PM (#6132052)
Musial and O'Neil are correct. You had Carew earlier so only one left
   251. Walt Davis Posted: June 08, 2023 at 04:09 PM (#6132054)
But if guys cresting 400 later in the season don't count then why count Arraez who was below 400 from May 10 through June 5? It's either "latest date at which a player was hitting 400" or it's "latest without falling below 400 (you'd better start hot)." "Above 400 in their team's 63rd game and didn't fall below 400 until their team's Xth game ... and what should we do if they got back over 400" is a really odd thing to track.

Getting back to #200 ... anybody know of other players who walked in their first PA? You might be able to find it in stathead.
   252. Booey Posted: June 08, 2023 at 05:08 PM (#6132067)
#251 - Exactly. It's a weirdly phrased question if it only includes players at .400+ after their teams SPECIFIC 63rd game rather than anyone still over .400 at any time past their teams 63rd game (with enough PA's to qualify). What 1977 Carew and especially 1980 Brett did was way more impressive than what Arraez has done so far.

(Note: I'm not dissing Arraez. I'm having fun following his season too)
   253. The Duke Posted: June 08, 2023 at 05:24 PM (#6132071)
It was simply the phrasing of an MLB article on the topic. Since 1941 should have been a clue m. Ted Williams checks in as the final name
   254. Booey Posted: June 08, 2023 at 07:08 PM (#6132102)
Well, that's a bit confusing too. I assumed "since 1941" meant AFTER 1941, since obviously Williams was the last AL/NL player to accomplish the feat.
   255. Froot Loops Posted: June 08, 2023 at 07:13 PM (#6132103)
Charlie Blackmon was over .400 as late as August 23rd, but I suppose that's a special case. (It was in 2020.)
   256. Walt Davis Posted: June 08, 2023 at 07:19 PM (#6132104)
We're not blaming you Duke, it's just a silly, weird list and one that nobody would know. It's not like there's anything even special about G 63 -- if it was "above 400 at the AS break" at least that would be a familiar landmark.

Even Williams 41 ... he was under 400 from team games 13 through 32, fell below 400 again in game 73, bounced back in 74 but back below in 75 through 91. He didn't dip below again but did reach exactly 400 with 2 games to go, going 6 for 8. Even he went hitless in 30 games (3-9 with a BB as a PH).

Just out of curiosity, Ted

career 344/482/634
as PH. 297/447/535 (8 IBB in 144 PA)

Even Williams took a big hit when PHing. (Note seems there are a hundred or so games where we don't have positional splits so he probably pinch-hit a bit more than that.
   257. The Duke Posted: June 08, 2023 at 07:35 PM (#6132106)
Ive moved on. I'm falling in love with De La Cruz. He seems to be Tatis - like from what I've seen. Unbelievable tools. He's so fast that I'm sure he will break all kinds of triples records. Almost every ball in the gap is a potential triple. His biggest problem will be the slow clods in front of him.

A switch hitter too. With apparently similar power from both sides. He's like the six million dollar man
   258. frannyzoo Posted: June 08, 2023 at 07:36 PM (#6132107)
Watching the Mets as a fan right now is very ungood. They could play the Braves daily until the next Presidential election and not win once.
   259. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: June 08, 2023 at 07:37 PM (#6132108)
Some guy named Matt Dermody is on the bump for the Red Sox. He's 32, drafted 832nd! in 2013 and has thrown all of 28 innings in the majors. So of course in the first Jose Ramirez shows him how hard it is to pitch as this level. Sox down 1-0 already.
   260. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: June 08, 2023 at 07:42 PM (#6132109)
He's so fast that I'm sure he will break all kinds of triples records.

Would just love a season with someone getting 20+ again. Parks are too small for anyone to ever get close to career triples records. Those old parks with those massive deep alleys were made for triples. Maybe Cincy can trade him to SF, they have a great triples alley in their park.

Is there anywhere we can find which parks yield the most triples? Yearly? last 5 years? Obviously heavily dependent on the home team players.
   261. Walt Davis Posted: June 08, 2023 at 07:42 PM (#6132110)
I am now of course curious what the answer is to "latest game before dropping below 400" is. Arraez was over 400 (at game's end) for the first 37 team games. Carew 77 started 1-4; Gwynn 94 was under by game 3; Brett 0-3 in game 1 in 1980; Olerud 1-4 in 1993.
   262. Walt Davis Posted: June 08, 2023 at 07:44 PM (#6132111)
Zack Wheeler no-hitting the Tigers through 7. 100 pitches. Phils 1-0.

ECruz just 1-4 with 3 Ks and a steal today. I guess as worst games of a career go, it's not too bad.

   265. Walt Davis Posted: June 08, 2023 at 07:59 PM (#6132114)
I mentioned Grae Kessinger, Don's grandson, Keith's nephew. He got a start at 3B the other day, 0-3. Of all the players one might guess would start a 3-generation baseball family, Don Kesinger would have been a very late guess.
   266. Walt Davis Posted: June 08, 2023 at 08:01 PM (#6132115)
And the no-hitter is gone with 1 out in the 8th ... big deserved cheer as he exits but, preceded by an error (that might now become a hit), the Tigers are a sac fly away from tying the game and Wheeler could well lose.
   267. Walt Davis Posted: June 08, 2023 at 08:05 PM (#6132116)
Tigers go with a successful non-suicidal squeeze which becomes a single when the 2B doesn't cover. 1-1.

Jose Ramirez is insulted that the Red Sox tried to win a game with a guy who was drafted 832! and rips his 2nd homer of the game. Sox down 3-0

If Billy McKinney is the answer - wait, what was the question again?
Who had a triple & HR for NYY today?

Sox remove Dermady, bring in the corpse of Kluber, and you guessed it, Jose with another jack. That's 3 for the day, Sox down 8-3.

Pete Alonso is coming out of the game after getting hit on the wrist with a Charlie Morton fastball.

Charlie Morton has plunked 159 batters in his career; this is tied for 14th all-time. Morton has thrown less than 1900 innings in his career. Nobody ahead of him on the list is under 3000 innings. The pitcher he's tied with is Roger Clemens; Morton has about 38% as many innings as Clemens.

Don't dig in against Charlie Morton.

Sad to say, but Kluber's washed, been washed, and letting him pitch is just punishment. Injuries are cruel.

That Mets/ Braves game is a real doozy. Apparently it looks like the Mets are not allowed to have nice, shiny things.....
   274. frannyzoo Posted: June 08, 2023 at 10:55 PM (#6132130)
To repeat #258: Watching the Mets as a fan right now is very ungood. They could play the Braves daily until the next Presidential election and not win once.

With Braves legends Chipper Jones, John Smoltz, Tom Glavine, and, uh, Jeff Francoeur in the booth, Albies absolutely crushes the walk-off HR to beat the Mets. Crazy, crazy game.

Jordan Lyles is 0-10 to start. According to some research I saw only one other starting pitcher in the last 30 years has started the season at 0-10? Who is he?

A big hint: He started Game 1 of a World Series in the prior year and won it going 8 innings. The losing pitcher is still active.

DiComo:
Mets roster moves are official:

-1B Pete Alonso to the IL
-INF Luis Guillorme activated
-RHP Stephen Nogosek DFA'd
-LHP Zach Muckenhirn activated

In addition, C Tomás Nido has cleared waivers and been outrighted to Triple-A Syracuse.
Assuming Mauricio's ankle is fully healed, why the reluctance to bring him up to play 1B, with McNeil then in LF, and Canha at 1B?
   281. The Duke Posted: June 09, 2023 at 05:12 PM (#6132203)
Bass DFA'd, Kershaw probably doesn't have much time left. I'd get me to the IL if I were him .

Not that it's a big difference but, in terms of the impact of the new rules, it's probably more important that BABIP has gone up from 290 to 297. HR and K rates are also up s tiny bit which has some impact on BA.

BABIP by type, 2022 then 2023

GB 236 242
FB 101 097
LD 618 633
bunts 523 515
(quick estimate suggests the bunt rate is about the same)

So first guess is that 2B out of short RF (LD BABIP) is more important than bannning the shift per se. How do folks feel about returning the shift as long as they are on the dirt? (Just curious)

Granted, I would not entrust my wellbeing to the Phillies' LF either.

4-0 Cardinals in the 4th, this is a different world than we have seen in the past week.
   290. cardsfanboy Posted: June 09, 2023 at 09:15 PM (#6132225)
As of today, the Cardinals are the only team in the NL central with a positive run differential. That is hilarious if it wasn't so sad for me as a fan.
   291. cardsfanboy Posted: June 09, 2023 at 09:19 PM (#6132226)
Really dumb ass and weird stat. Jordan Walker got his 25th hit of the season today. He has 25 hits against 25 different pitchers. (he did get his 26th today also, and this is the first time in his major league career he got a second hit off of a pitcher)
   292. cardsfanboy Posted: June 09, 2023 at 09:46 PM (#6132227)

So is Voit, unless I missed a signing someplace. (and considering how well Gaby Sanchez did with a change of scenery,(and Bellinger) it's not a potential bad signing)
   293. The Duke Posted: June 09, 2023 at 10:05 PM (#6132228)
Hosmer seems like a perfect fit for 3-4 weeks. Much better than voit

The cardinals have Luken Baker to trade. I'd trade him for quintana

I really hate mlb.com replay on gameday. When I want to see a homerun replay (or any replay) I want to see an unedited clip of the replay, from the beginning to the end... this cutting of replays is just bad tv.
   295. cardsfanboy Posted: June 09, 2023 at 10:42 PM (#6132233)
Jordan Walker with his third hit in this game, as was pointed out in other game threads, he has been averaging about one hit per game pretty consistently, so it's nice to see him get a true multi hit game.
   296. cardsfanboy Posted: June 09, 2023 at 10:45 PM (#6132234)
Cardinal announcers, for each game pick a player to be their pick of the game. Horton took Donovan, Jim (Hayes) took Arenado, and I think Rooney took Edman... Jim and Horton look good today. (Donovan has 3 hits, Arenado has a hr and a hit)
   297. cardsfanboy Posted: June 09, 2023 at 10:52 PM (#6132235)
Montgomery finally gets another win, he's pitched way better than his 3-7 record indicates.

When is Quintana going to pitch again? It's still probably at least three weeks away for the majors. (and the sooner he shows up, the more likely he'll be used as a short inning starter until he develops) best case scenario is he's a major league ready pitcher by second week of July. Note: I'm a fan of his, and thought the Mets made the signing of the off season with him, but the he wouldn't affect the Cardinals playoff chances. Right now, the Cardinals need to just start advancing runners with less than two outs, that has killed us all season. It's not the quality of the team in any way, it's just that we can't advance runners for ####. We will get a double, a walk to lead off an inning, and the inning ends with men on first and second.

I'm a huge Quintana fan, so I don't disagree with your trade, but we failed to sign him when we had a chance, so I think the team might undervalue him as a whole. At the same time, our last 10 or so games, wasn't about our pitching. Our offense, which is actually good, had a horrible 10 or so days. Mind you, this team needs to figure out how to advance runners.

On an unrelated note. This is one of the few times I've been able to watch a post game show, and I hope that whatever future broadcaster we get, realizes that Alexa Datt is incredible. She's been controlling Al in a way that is incredible and bringing the data and the game.
