The Pirates are calling up Oneil Cruz, but more importantly they are calling up Bligh Madris

How long before they make him the Captain?

They'd be risking a mutiny if they did.

The pirates crew shouts "raise the Jolly Roger" after a win. They ought to find a way to work Bligh into that.

During the shipwreck that was covid, Madris spent a season playing baseball in Australia.
Just a guess, he's been called Captain more than a few times.

Question: Is this year's AL East the best division since the Wild Card era started in 1995?
Looks like it to me.

Dodgers rumored to have struck a deal with the tigers for MILB outfielder

Brewers Andy Ashby to IL. The brewers famous resilient pitching staff is starting to show some signs of unraveling. I've really been a fan of their "kinda" six man rotation thought process. Maybe it's no better than the 4 man and 5 man versions for injury prevention.

The Atlanta Bullies just ended a stretch of 34 consecutive games against teams that took the field with a losing record. they went 25-6 before the Cubbies took 2 out of 3 to end the silly stretch, so 26-8 overall.

let's see how tough the Braves are while facing the Giants and Dodgers for seven games this week !

Bligh ... well, I won't say he got a bad rap but sailing a launch 3600 natuical miles is no mean feat.

But Wiki informs me that he was essentially the target of a second mutiny. Post-Bounty he was appointed the governor of NSW, charged with cleaning up the rum trade. This led to the Rum Rebellion during which he was arrested and deposed from his command. Deposed by your own men once, shame on them. Deposed by your own men twice, that's probably shame on you. And even on his way to Australia:

Even before his arrival, Bligh's style of governance led to problems with his subordinates. The Admiralty gave command of the storeship HMS Porpoise and the convoy to the lower-ranked Captain Joseph Short, while Bligh took command of a transport ship. This led to quarrels which eventually resulted in Captain Short firing across Bligh's bow in an attempt to force Bligh to obey his signals.[6] When this failed, Short tried to give an order to Lieutenant Putland to stand by to fire on Bligh's ship.[7] Bligh boarded Porpoise and seized control of the convoy.

When they arrived in Sydney, Bligh, backed up by statements from two of Short's officers, had Short stripped of the captaincy of Porpoise – which he gave to his son-in-law – cancelled the 240-hectare (600-acre) land grant Short had been promised as payment for the voyage and shipped him back to England for court-martial, at which Short was acquitted.[6] The president of the court, Sir Isaac Coffin, wrote to the Admiralty and made several serious accusations against Bligh, including that he had influenced the officers to testify against Short. Bligh's wife obtained a statement from one of the officers denying this, and Banks and other supporters of Bligh lobbied successfully against his recall as governor.[7]

So both a mutinee and a mutineer. Quite the career. The Milton Bradley of the Royal Navy.

So the Pirates have Captain and Oneil?
   12. The Yankee Clapper Posted: June 20, 2022 at 07:18 PM (#6082965)
Rizzo’s HR (#19) to RF (410 feet) puts the Yankees up 1-0 at Rays in 1st.
   13. Walt Davis Posted: June 20, 2022 at 07:24 PM (#6082966)
Oneil -- 6-7 and looks to be about 150 pounds.

Ooh, the Pitt broadcast has "SuperMo" replays.

Red Sox go old school to get 1 in the first. Fast, young guy draws a lead off BB, steals 2B, comes home on the JD single.

So the Pirates have Captain and Oneil?

Do That To Me One More Time
   16. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: June 20, 2022 at 08:49 PM (#6082976)
Have a look at the Oneil Cruz throw to first to beat the runner, nearly 97mph...wow.
   17. The Yankee Clapper Posted: June 20, 2022 at 08:56 PM (#6082977)
3 BB the only blemishes on Garrett Cole’s record through 6 innings, and 93 pitches, with 10 K’s. Still 1-0.
   18. Howie Menckel Posted: June 20, 2022 at 09:14 PM (#6082979)
103 pitches thru 7 - and still a no-no
   19. The Yankee Clapper Posted: June 20, 2022 at 09:15 PM (#6082980)
Cole through 7 innings, with 12 strikeouts, and a significant event in play at 103 pitches. Some managering likely ahead.
   20. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: June 20, 2022 at 09:21 PM (#6082982)
Sox starter Winckowski leaves after 6 2/3 up 5-2, runner on 2nd. Sox pen coming in to make it close and more interesting for Tiger fans.
   21. The Duke Posted: June 20, 2022 at 09:28 PM (#6082984)
I thought you wrote Wickersham which seemed surreal to me.
   22. Walt Davis Posted: June 20, 2022 at 09:31 PM (#6082985)
Now just an event
   23. The Yankee Clapper Posted: June 20, 2022 at 09:31 PM (#6082986)
105th pitch ends the no-hitter on ground ball up the middle. No shift?
   24. Walt Davis Posted: June 20, 2022 at 09:33 PM (#6082988)
Was Contreras ejected or just given the rest of the day off?
   25. Walt Davis Posted: June 20, 2022 at 09:38 PM (#6082990)
So who wins an eating contest between Dan Vogelbach and Alejandro Kirk?
   26. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: June 20, 2022 at 09:44 PM (#6082993)
Tigers have 6 "hitters" in the lineup who are OPSing below .600. That is not good.
   27. Walt Davis Posted: June 20, 2022 at 09:47 PM (#6082994)
Pirates getting a bit of revenge today. Cubs have beaten them by scores of 21-0, 9-0 and 7-0 while the Pirates have won 5 of the 6 close ones. Now 12-1 Pirates. Reliever Alec Mills taking one for the team (72 pitches and counting).
   28. Howie Menckel Posted: June 20, 2022 at 09:48 PM (#6082995)
Dodgers acquire minor league Tigers OF Trayce Thompson for cash (pennies?)

Take 1: the Tigers could be on track to be the worst-hitting MLB team ever. and you want a guy not good enough to play for THEM?

Take 2: The Dodgers know what they are doing, and the Tigers obviously don't, so....

it's like when the Yankees picked up Pirates RP Clay Holmes for a song. the guy sucks, doesn't he? well......

coincidentally, Holmes - who allowed a run on Opening Day and one inherited run all season, doubles his tally to four runners scoring in 2022. so now it's 2-2 in the 8th and a miserable-looking Cole doesn't even get a W for his efforts.

new Pirates SS Oneil Cruz - whose father was a former minor-leaguer and a big fan of Paul O'Neill and whose spelling of Irish surnames is spotty and all three of those assertions are actually true - has 4 RBI in his season debut.
   29. Walt Davis Posted: June 20, 2022 at 09:53 PM (#6082996)
The Tigers have called up (a couple days ago) 21-yo CF Riley Green who was the #4-6 prospect coming into the season. Last year he hit 301/387/534 across AA-AAA (at just age 20), looks like he was hurt to start the year as he didn't play in AAA until May 30. Didn't do much down there in two weeks but he's in the show. I assume there's no danger of reacing super-2 status. So far 2 for 5 with 4(!) BB so possibly the Tigers best hitter.
   30. Walt Davis Posted: June 20, 2022 at 09:58 PM (#6082998)
Thompson is 32 and this is his second stint with the Dodgers. He was cut by the Pades sometime in May, caught on with the Tigers a month ago. Somebody has slipped him the mojo as he's hitting 305/365/721 at AAA. I assume the Dodgers have some injuries and needed a body for a few weeks (in the majors or AAA) and preferred one with ML experience. Matt Carpenter (or Cano) is probably the better "what can it hurt" 2022 comp.
   31. The Yankee Clapper Posted: June 20, 2022 at 10:08 PM (#6082999)
Rays Manny Margot carted off field after crashing knee-first into RF wall trying to catch Aaron Hicks RBI triple, and then landing awkwardly. Would have been a great catch, but wasn’t. SF then scores Hicks, making it 4-2 Yankees.
   32. Howie Menckel Posted: June 20, 2022 at 10:10 PM (#6083000)
after 1467 MLB G at SS - and nowhere else - Brandon Crawford enters tonight in the 9th inning of a 1-1 game at 2B after a rally try using three pinch-hitters failed to break the tie in the top of the inning.

I think Ozzie, Jeter, and Aparicio are among those who never played anywhere else.

and after the Holmes result, someone named Jason Adam - who had been racked for 2 ER this season in almost 27 IP including 9 H allowed - is racked for 2 more ER to bloat his ERA up to 1.30.
   33. The Yankee Clapper Posted: June 20, 2022 at 10:39 PM (#6083010)
Gritty win for the plucky Yankees over the stubborn Rays tonight. With Toronto currently trailing Chicago, the Yankee lead could be 12 games later tonight, better than the fabled 1998 squad which had a 9-game lead with an identical 50-17 record.

The Rays down turn of late has helped Boston creep into 3rd in the Division, still 13.5 games back.
   34. Snowboy Posted: June 21, 2022 at 01:19 AM (#6083026)
The MLB debut of "Captain" Bligh Madris: 3-4, RBI-2, R-1, SB-1. 2B-1, LOB-0.

(Granted, it was vs Cubs. So level of competition similar to what he faced in Australia? But it all counts in the box score. Tomorrow he'll be listed on bref as the 22,71xth player in major league history.)
