Reds broadcasts always kill me with the Gorilla Glue/Tape banners behind home plate

Jays get two hits against Hicks, and I don't think either batter had a full swing.

Willson Contreras drilled on the knee while catching by a 103 mph Jordan Hicks wild pitch, and has to exit the game.

Pirates win! Bednar strikes out some guy on a called third strike with runner on second. Definitely a more entertaining game than Brewers/Cubs
   105. cardsfanboy Posted: March 30, 2023 at 07:16 PM (#6121937)
Well that sucks, about the only position the Cardinals don't have a quality backup is second, (in theory Knizner should be an average player, but he's yet to show that ability at the major league level)
   106. salvomania Posted: March 30, 2023 at 07:16 PM (#6121938)
Jays get three consecutive excuse-me base hits to start the 8th, and with a wild pitch thrown in, take the lead against the Cardinals 8-7.
   107. cardsfanboy Posted: March 30, 2023 at 07:18 PM (#6121939)
another weak ass hit but it leads to two runs, Jays now up.
   108. salvomania Posted: March 30, 2023 at 07:21 PM (#6121940)
The way the Cardinals are hitting this game, I don't think 8 runs wins it with two innings to go.
   109. cardsfanboy Posted: March 30, 2023 at 07:21 PM (#6121941)
Cardinals announcers making the same joke that probably everyone else has made about Alejandro Kirk... "The Blue Jays should make him the team Captain." (I still like it)
   110. PeteF3 Posted: March 30, 2023 at 07:27 PM (#6121942)
The Phillies and Rangers combined for 18 runs in a game that took 3:09. That's two minutes less than the length of an average game in 2021, just 3 minutes more than the average length of a game last year. I really hope that's the start of a trend.
   111. cardsfanboy Posted: March 30, 2023 at 07:33 PM (#6121943)
Not sure where the Cardinals game is at, 15 runs, 30 hits, 17 strikeouts, 6 walks and it's the bottom of the eighth at about 3 hours 20 minutes.
   112. Hombre Brotani Posted: March 30, 2023 at 07:35 PM (#6121944)
If I were Toronto, I'd walk Arenado and take my chances.

See?
   114. salvomania Posted: March 30, 2023 at 07:37 PM (#6121946)
Good point---but they pitch to him with Knizner on deck and he makes them pay, Birds up 9-8.
   115. cardsfanboy Posted: March 30, 2023 at 07:37 PM (#6121947)
Walk(Nootbaar), double(Goldy), automatic double(Arenado) gives the Cardinals a 9-8 lead.
   116. cardsfanboy Posted: March 30, 2023 at 07:38 PM (#6121948)
Cardinals radio announcers were saying pretty much the same thing, but mentioned at some point you have to get an out.
   117. Hombre Brotani Posted: March 30, 2023 at 07:44 PM (#6121949)
at some point you have to get an out.
Yeah, but when you're up by just one run in the 8th and ya boi just got himself into a 2nd and 3rd jam with nobody out, maybe Nolan Arenado isn't the guy you try to get that out on. Wouldn't you want to set up the force at home or maybe a double-play, against someone who isn't Arenado? That would make tactical sense.
   118. cardsfanboy Posted: March 30, 2023 at 07:48 PM (#6121950)

I agree, especially when you have the offensive difference between Arenado and Knizner, and knowing full and well that the Cardinals cannot pinch hit for Knizner.

and first two batters reach for the Jays in the top of ninth, 1st and third no outs....
   119. salvomania Posted: March 30, 2023 at 07:49 PM (#6121951)
At some point these Cardinals' 100-mph-throwers need to make somebody miss. Way too much contact!
   120. cardsfanboy Posted: March 30, 2023 at 07:50 PM (#6121952)
Springer with a 5 hit day to tie the game again.

That failed bunt sac feels extra costly right now.
   122. cardsfanboy Posted: March 30, 2023 at 07:55 PM (#6121954)
10-9 Jays, this has been a wild game. The Cardinal radio announcers keep blaming/arguing that it's because of the shift rules etc... but it's just been a bunch of interesting swings.

Back to Wrigley opening day ... apparently last year's was the smallest crowd in about 20 years (not including 2020-21 of course). This year's was just about 1,000 more than last year which seems very bad indeed, especially given the Brewers are something of a rival. Last year between the lockout and the delayed start, it wasn't a big surprise but this year there's no excuse.

The Cardinals did play the 2B back in shallow right-center quite a bit last year, I think at least a couple of those dinks woulda been caught.

Actually they were somewhat giddy about it. They apparently hated the shift and have spent the entire game talking about how the new rules has massively increased the hitting lanes.

Cardinals got babip'd big time but at the end of the day they had the NLs best closer on the mound cans couldn't get it done. Gotta close out games if you want to win

Romano sews it up striking out two of the three batters he faces; Hicks and Helsley struck out only 1 of 13 batters faced in the 8th and 9th, and all that contact resulted in four runs despite slmost zero hard contact.

That is the thing, Chicago is one of the more "Live" sports towns in the country, and it's not like the Bulls or Bears or Blackhawks are sucking the available sports energy from them. It's almost as if the all the mediocre teams are sucking the energy out of the fans. Chicago is a passionate sports town, to see them not being passionate or at least not to their normal levels is a bit disheartening. But as you mentioned, I do think we are still dealing with post covid issues and maybe we can place the blame there, energy has been sucked out of all of us the past couple of years.

not really, the shift never really affected anything noticeable on a per game basis, it's akin to moving a player a couple spots down the lineup where it might figure into one play per 5 to 10 games, barely noticeable on the surface, but when you scrub the data it's clearly there. It has no noticeable difference on a per game basis. Their argument that it's why there was so many hits in todays game, when almost every hit would have been a hit even in a shift style environment, ignores the reality of the results today vs their perception.

yes, and also worth noting is that the Mets won a World Series (1969) before ever winning a season opener - 0-8 until launching into this absurd streak beginning in 1970.

Or maybe it has finally got to the point where the working man/middle class person simply cannot justify the massive cost and inconvenience of seeing live sporting events? Not trolling or anything, but for a lot of people out there, it's a pretty tough time right now and Cubs tickets aren't exactly on the cheap side.

Roughly .015-.020 if I had to take a random guess. But to separate the pace of place rules, the encouragement to steal rules and the larger bases rules from that number is going to be a bit hard, and when you add in that about 10 or so teams are going to intentionally try to increase that gap by playing the guys who will thrive more in those situations is somewhat ignoring the cause vs causation concept. I mean you think more balls in play will result in higher obp for the team, so you play guys who are more balls in play guys type of thing, so of course the average will then go up.

I absolutely think batting average will go up this year, I just don't know exactly why it's going to go up because there were so many changes made and teams are much quicker to react to changes than they were even a decade ago, that they might proactively jump into a decision that affects one or two things that we measure, but ultimately the goal is more runs and I'm not sure it's going to change much there. (other words we might see an up in batting average a drop in obp relative to batting average and a drop in slugging, meanwhile seeing more runs scores relative to the number of men on base based upon the changing stolen base rules etc.)

These rules aren't really designed to increase scoring, but to change the way that runs score.

All of that makes sense, but still, it's Chicago, Wrigley and spring, maybe it's too soon after St Paddy's day or something, it just feels like Wrigley selling out on opening day should be automatic.
It was in no way “spring” in Chicago today.

I can't comment, as I don't know, I'm in a tough time myself which is part of the reason I wasn't at the game etc. It just feels like a bit of spirit has left a lot of the country (which is kinda funny because I'm in St Louis and we have had a major lift in our sports spirit the past month or so with the XFL and Soccer team, and a surprisingly good Mizzou basketball team....although the Blues did kill a large portion of that)

Having said that, opening day is an event type of thing to a lot of people, it's like a concert of a favorite artist or a travelling Broadway show, it's generally a different animal than just a game. I've done the baseball writers dinner even though I haven't gone to a baseball game all year, events are events.
   141. Brian C Posted: March 30, 2023 at 09:18 PM (#6121975)
I never went to an opener at Wrigley the entire time I lived there. Just silly expensive, and the second game of the year was always one of the cheap games in their dynamic pricing scheme. So my yearly tradition was going to that one, and I'd get an "expensive" ticket to take advantage of the bronze pricing or whatever they called it. Sat through my share of bad-weather games, but what are you gonna do? Wait until July?

This year, though, it doesn't look like that would have worked; I'd have to wait until the first weekday games in mid-April to get cheap tickets. Was more fun when Opening Day was a Monday and that second game was a weeknight.

The only Opening Day game I remember going to anywhere was when I lived in Houston in 1999, when the Cubs opened there. Might have gone to a Rangers opener when I lived in Dallas, but I doubt it. I know that Opening Day crowds are usually the biggest crowds of the year, but it never seemed all that special to me to actually go to.

ChiSox close out Houston. The end of the Astros dynasty begins today!

in the mid-1980s, the Mets had an "Opening Day II" promotion, noting that "the second home game gets no respect - no respect at all !"

Rodney Dangerfield threw out the first pitch - and I am not kidding about that. Hey, it brought me to the park.

P.S. I posted more than enough about Chicago and Wrigley in another thread, but having traveled from the NYC area to Chicago at least 80 times in my life (long story), I right away was struck by the difference in April and September weather.

NY area, "early spring" and "late summer."
Chicago, not so much.

to be fair, in a "fry an egg fastest on a city sidewalk in July" contest, Chicago often is a true contender with otherwise somewhat balmier climes.

It was in no way “spring” in Chicago today.

Sure but there is no way the Cubs should have to rely on gameday ticket sales for opening day. Now if they sold all the tix but reported only actually attendance then maybe they sold out. But back in the day, no way anybody would miss opening day unless they were in hospital or it was cold, windy and rainy as all heck.

The only opener I ever went to was 1972 after the work stoppage and the Cubs opened on a Sat. Got up early (not realizing I didn't really need to) to get in line for the bleachers. First time I ever uttered a curse word out loud (peer pressure!!!!) Willie Montanez kept trying to make friends by tossing a ball to us but we always threw it back. Went the next day too and saw Hooton's no-hitter. Those and Barry's 600th are the highlight of my live baseball viewing life.

I've told that story many times before but surely opening day is when we get our annual new primate.

Watching the Cards game today it's hard not to love the Blue Jays. What a lineup. I may change my mind and have them go to the World Series on my projections. All they need is decent pitching and they will crush a lot of teams.

to be fair, in a "fry an egg fastest on a city sidewalk in July" contest, Chicago often is a true contender with otherwise somewhat balmier climes.

With climate change, Chicago weather is expected to trend more towards Mississippi so egg-frying trending up but should be balmier (but wetter) spring weather.

But I have to offer mild defense -- the first two weeks of Sept in Chicago were often lovely when I was growing up. Of course back then we were only worried about acid rain not climate apocalypse. Simpler times.

By the way ... OK, history, Stroman is the first to be called for a clock violation. Why do ESPN and MLB think I want to see the video "highlight" of a guy holding the ball too long?
   151. Walt Davis Posted: March 30, 2023 at 10:25 PM (#6121987)

They look pretty bad. For position players they seem to have hit the tanker's equilibrium of sorts in that they have only 1-2 guys under 27 yet there are only 5 guys you've heard of and two of those are Moustakas and Blackmon. A bit better on the SP side with Marquez, Freeland ... then the anonymous bullpen has Suter and Hand and, hopefully soon, Bard. Certainly in terms of opening day roster, there doesn't seem to be anybody for a fan to be interested in much less excited about.

In fairness, it's the Rox so I actually default to incompetence more than tanking but I think "tanker's equilibrium" has a ring to it.
   152. The Duke Posted: March 30, 2023 at 10:33 PM (#6121988)

Yes. is there anything positive about the Rockies? Do they have even 2 above average projected hitters in their lineup? Bryant and Cron I guess, but still a lot of work to go. (Profar? Grichuk? Blackmon? these are literally starting players for the team, guys who on 20 other teams would be the fifth outfielder type of guys)
   154. Walt Davis Posted: March 30, 2023 at 10:37 PM (#6121990)
Rox lineup with age and sometimes the career OPS+ (or minors OPS):

Yonathan Daza CF, 29, 79 OPS+
Kris Bryant RF, 31
Charlie Blackmon DH, 36, final year of contract
CJ Cron 1B, 33
Elehuris Montero 3B, 24, 85 OPS+ (snuck him by me)
Ryan McMahon 2B, 28, 91 OPS+
Elias Diaz C, 32, 79 OPS+
Harold Castro LF, 29, not good enough for the Tigers
Ezequiel Tovar SS, 21, no relation so I lost interest but #25 on MLB.com's list so somebody to be interested in

It's top 3 and they haven't lost yet but they have K'd 6 times vs Snell so far ... but also have 4 hits so the BABIP is sky high.
   155. Walt Davis Posted: March 30, 2023 at 10:46 PM (#6121991)
#152 ... agree that a 97-loss projection is probably a bit much. The Nats are also at 97, the other stinkers in the low 90s. I would have thought the balanced schedule probably helps the Rox a bit.

It has no noticeable difference on a per game basis.

Not my experience. You don't notice the shift based on rate differentials, you notice it when a well struck grounder to right is eaten up by a dramatically shifted shortstop or second baseman playing short right field.

That is truly amazing. They are a respectable 83-76 in games 2-4 since 1970.

But in reality, most of those would have been gobbled up by normal play, people are just projecting better than normal defense onto plays.

Yes there are plays that do get gobbled up by the shift, but the volume on a per game basis wouldn't be noticeable to the average fan.

I was struck yesterday by how many black ball players have worn/are wearing the Cardinals red jacket. You have a Gibson, Brock, and Flood who have passed along with Bill White who is still kicking. On the field yesterday they had Lankford, Ozzie Smith, Willie McGee, Vince Coleman. And now they've got Walker, Winn and Hence who all have the tools to make it big.

You can see the same thing at the national HOF induction ceremonies - a lot of great black ballplayers.

I hope the league can entice black players back into baseball.

The cards have lost so many of their 1960s/70s greats lately. Only Joe Torre showed up yesterday. Herzog showed up as well at 91 years of age.

How not to do it: Dodger Fan Leveled By Security During On-Field Proposal. Still, she apparently said yes, so all’s well that ends well.

#171 that's a nice tackle

Is this correct ... Everybody opens on a Thurs then on a Fri there are only 5 games? Why not just have everybody open on a Fri? The whole point of opening on a Thurs is to get the sellout crowd on a day of the week you wouldn't normally draw then getting your regular full weekend good draw. But not playing Fri ruins that idea. 3 of those 5 games on the West Coast.

171. I thought the hit was way OTT. When he runs onto field, you could reasonably believe he could be attempting a Monica Seles knifing. If he had been hit then, fine. But he runs out, and by my count, is kneeing for 7-9 seconds before he gets blindsided at full speed. It's clear during rhis time, nothing bad is going on. No gun or knife, just an engagement ring. That guard had been waiting all his life to assault someone like that

Stand outside on the lawn and count to 8 Mississippi and see how long that is. Surely the guard could see violence wasn't needed.

What the fan did was stupid, but trying to injure some one because of it is just as stupid. It's a microcosm of all the issues that are playing out between the public and the police.

The off day following Opening Day is to accommodate a potential rainout, and avoid having those with Opening Day tickets bump all the Game Two fans, who would then be forced to pick another game down the road. Teams with domed stadiums or low rain probability don't have to worry about this, so they play on Friday. It’s a bit of overkill, but it’s part of the hype that goes with Opening Day. MLB probably calculates that the Game 2 Friday night gate isn’t that big a deal.

The Dodgers may want to send the Happy Couple a nice engagement gift before he decides to sue for excessive force. Apparently, he wasn’t injured, so probably no significant damages, but people have collected for similar unnecessarily-violent arrests that caused significant injuries.

Mets-Marlins game start time: 6:40 pm
Mets-Marlins game end time: 8:53 pm

had an hour-long phone call (yada yada yada), then figured I'd catch the last few innings.

flipped on SNY, and Alonso had just HR'd to tie the game with 1 out in the 9th inning. 5 minutes later, the game is over.

and no, I am NOT complaining. I'll adjust, and early risers can watch the end of ballgames. it's all good.
   178. Hombre Brotani Posted: March 31, 2023 at 10:03 PM (#6122097)
Astros defense is just nuts. First Bregman with a bare-handed pickup-and-throw to get one out, then Kyle Tucker to the wall to take extra bases away.
   179. Snowboy Posted: March 31, 2023 at 10:04 PM (#6122098)
If SNY told me Alonso's HR had tied the game, I'd be complaining. Because other than being tied in the first inning, the Marlins led the entire game tonight.
   180. Snowboy Posted: March 31, 2023 at 10:05 PM (#6122099)
Yeah Hombre, same thoughts: Bregman, Tucker, Maldonado, that was three pretty stellar plays in one inning.
   181. Hombre Brotani Posted: March 31, 2023 at 10:20 PM (#6122100)
And then they come up to bat and take the lead. I hate Houston, but they're simply great.

ha !

yes, it went from 2-0 to 2-1

I had too much adrenaline, apparently, from the frenzied pace. I blame MLB

Flaherty having a decent start today, but his pitch count is way up there and control seems to be a bit off as he has 7 walks.
   186. salvomania Posted: April 01, 2023 at 03:36 PM (#6122159)
Flaherty with a sloppy no-hit five innings, allowing 7 walks and a HBP. Probably done at 95 pitches.
   187. cardsfanboy Posted: April 01, 2023 at 03:41 PM (#6122161)
Flaherty 5 innings pitched, 0 hits, 7 walks 4 strikeouts, 95 pitches for a guy who is a fabrege egg, it was a no brainer to pull him.

Edit: Should have hit refresh before posting.

Coke to Salvomania.

So replay requires an immediate hand up from manager and only 15 seconds to review before making a decision. Why even give the 15 seconds ? Just make the manager make a call. You'd only get obvious reviews. All the ticky tack stuff would go away. Maybe restore the 15 seconds after the 6th inning
   191. cardsfanboy Posted: April 01, 2023 at 04:18 PM (#6122175)
Hicks just can't find the strike zone. Back to back walks to start the inning off.

4 batters in, 3 walks and a force out and a wild pitch, pull his ass.

Logan O'Hoppe has driven in all two of the Angels' runs this season so far.

Nevermind, Taylor Ward gets one. Fuginami went from unhittable to loading the bases against Ohtani.
   195. cardsfanboy Posted: April 01, 2023 at 04:40 PM (#6122180)
Hopefully now it means that they move Walker to the number two spot, having Burleson there today was a bit weird choice.
   196. Hombre Brotani Posted: April 01, 2023 at 04:42 PM (#6122181)
Ohtani doubles in ONE not two, opposite field off the wall with a flat-footed swing. THAT's more like it.

EDIT: singles off the wall. The ball came off the wall hard and they held the runner.
   197. cardsfanboy Posted: April 01, 2023 at 04:50 PM (#6122182)
Cardinals back to .500, with the hitters that you want/expect to do good, being good so far this season, Flaherty was a little off his game, Hicks has been off in both appearances, Helsey had a bounce back appearance, and Ver Hagen looks to be solid so far. I would prefer to be 2-0 right now, but this was a nice bounce back game with enough tension.

The 15-seconds requirement does eliminate a lot of the tricky-tack stuff, where only one camera angle shows a runner barely come off the bag. A team’s replay guru gets one look, maybe two, if he’s quick and knows which camera angles are most likely to be helpful.

Anthony Volpe gets his 1st MLB hit with 2 outs, then promptly gets his 2nd SB, but advances no further as LeMahieu strikes out.
