I agree, especially when you have the offensive difference between Arenado and Knizner, and knowing full and well that the Cardinals cannot pinch hit for Knizner.
and first two batters reach for the Jays in the top of ninth, 1st and third no outs....
The Cardinals did play the 2B back in shallow right-center quite a bit last year, I think at least a couple of those dinks woulda been caught.
Actually they were somewhat giddy about it. They apparently hated the shift and have spent the entire game talking about how the new rules has massively increased the hitting lanes.
That is the thing, Chicago is one of the more "Live" sports towns in the country, and it's not like the Bulls or Bears or Blackhawks are sucking the available sports energy from them. It's almost as if the all the mediocre teams are sucking the energy out of the fans. Chicago is a passionate sports town, to see them not being passionate or at least not to their normal levels is a bit disheartening. But as you mentioned, I do think we are still dealing with post covid issues and maybe we can place the blame there, energy has been sucked out of all of us the past couple of years.
not really, the shift never really affected anything noticeable on a per game basis, it's akin to moving a player a couple spots down the lineup where it might figure into one play per 5 to 10 games, barely noticeable on the surface, but when you scrub the data it's clearly there. It has no noticeable difference on a per game basis. Their argument that it's why there was so many hits in todays game, when almost every hit would have been a hit even in a shift style environment, ignores the reality of the results today vs their perception.
yes, and also worth noting is that the Mets won a World Series (1969) before ever winning a season opener - 0-8 until launching into this absurd streak beginning in 1970.
Or maybe it has finally got to the point where the working man/middle class person simply cannot justify the massive cost and inconvenience of seeing live sporting events? Not trolling or anything, but for a lot of people out there, it's a pretty tough time right now and Cubs tickets aren't exactly on the cheap side.
Roughly .015-.020 if I had to take a random guess. But to separate the pace of place rules, the encouragement to steal rules and the larger bases rules from that number is going to be a bit hard, and when you add in that about 10 or so teams are going to intentionally try to increase that gap by playing the guys who will thrive more in those situations is somewhat ignoring the cause vs causation concept. I mean you think more balls in play will result in higher obp for the team, so you play guys who are more balls in play guys type of thing, so of course the average will then go up.
I absolutely think batting average will go up this year, I just don't know exactly why it's going to go up because there were so many changes made and teams are much quicker to react to changes than they were even a decade ago, that they might proactively jump into a decision that affects one or two things that we measure, but ultimately the goal is more runs and I'm not sure it's going to change much there. (other words we might see an up in batting average a drop in obp relative to batting average and a drop in slugging, meanwhile seeing more runs scores relative to the number of men on base based upon the changing stolen base rules etc.)
These rules aren't really designed to increase scoring, but to change the way that runs score.
I can't comment, as I don't know, I'm in a tough time myself which is part of the reason I wasn't at the game etc. It just feels like a bit of spirit has left a lot of the country (which is kinda funny because I'm in St Louis and we have had a major lift in our sports spirit the past month or so with the XFL and Soccer team, and a surprisingly good Mizzou basketball team....although the Blues did kill a large portion of that)
Having said that, opening day is an event type of thing to a lot of people, it's like a concert of a favorite artist or a travelling Broadway show, it's generally a different animal than just a game. I've done the baseball writers dinner even though I haven't gone to a baseball game all year, events are events.
This year, though, it doesn't look like that would have worked; I'd have to wait until the first weekday games in mid-April to get cheap tickets. Was more fun when Opening Day was a Monday and that second game was a weeknight.
The only Opening Day game I remember going to anywhere was when I lived in Houston in 1999, when the Cubs opened there. Might have gone to a Rangers opener when I lived in Dallas, but I doubt it. I know that Opening Day crowds are usually the biggest crowds of the year, but it never seemed all that special to me to actually go to.
in the mid-1980s, the Mets had an "Opening Day II" promotion, noting that "the second home game gets no respect - no respect at all !"
Rodney Dangerfield threw out the first pitch - and I am not kidding about that. Hey, it brought me to the park.
P.S. I posted more than enough about Chicago and Wrigley in another thread, but having traveled from the NYC area to Chicago at least 80 times in my life (long story), I right away was struck by the difference in April and September weather.
NY area, "early spring" and "late summer."
Chicago, not so much.
to be fair, in a "fry an egg fastest on a city sidewalk in July" contest, Chicago often is a true contender with otherwise somewhat balmier climes.
Sure but there is no way the Cubs should have to rely on gameday ticket sales for opening day. Now if they sold all the tix but reported only actually attendance then maybe they sold out. But back in the day, no way anybody would miss opening day unless they were in hospital or it was cold, windy and rainy as all heck.
The only opener I ever went to was 1972 after the work stoppage and the Cubs opened on a Sat. Got up early (not realizing I didn't really need to) to get in line for the bleachers. First time I ever uttered a curse word out loud (peer pressure!!!!) Willie Montanez kept trying to make friends by tossing a ball to us but we always threw it back. Went the next day too and saw Hooton's no-hitter. Those and Barry's 600th are the highlight of my live baseball viewing life.
I've told that story many times before but surely opening day is when we get our annual new primate.
With climate change, Chicago weather is expected to trend more towards Mississippi so egg-frying trending up but should be balmier (but wetter) spring weather.
But I have to offer mild defense -- the first two weeks of Sept in Chicago were often lovely when I was growing up. Of course back then we were only worried about acid rain not climate apocalypse. Simpler times.
The only opening day I went to was 1994, which was the Tuffy Rhodes 3 HR game.
They look pretty bad. For position players they seem to have hit the tanker's equilibrium of sorts in that they have only 1-2 guys under 27 yet there are only 5 guys you've heard of and two of those are Moustakas and Blackmon. A bit better on the SP side with Marquez, Freeland ... then the anonymous bullpen has Suter and Hand and, hopefully soon, Bard. Certainly in terms of opening day roster, there doesn't seem to be anybody for a fan to be interested in much less excited about.
In fairness, it's the Rox so I actually default to incompetence more than tanking but I think "tanker's equilibrium" has a ring to it.
Yes. is there anything positive about the Rockies? Do they have even 2 above average projected hitters in their lineup? Bryant and Cron I guess, but still a lot of work to go. (Profar? Grichuk? Blackmon? these are literally starting players for the team, guys who on 20 other teams would be the fifth outfielder type of guys)
Yonathan Daza CF, 29, 79 OPS+
Kris Bryant RF, 31
Charlie Blackmon DH, 36, final year of contract
CJ Cron 1B, 33
Elehuris Montero 3B, 24, 85 OPS+ (snuck him by me)
Ryan McMahon 2B, 28, 91 OPS+
Elias Diaz C, 32, 79 OPS+
Harold Castro LF, 29, not good enough for the Tigers
Ezequiel Tovar SS, 21, no relation so I lost interest but #25 on MLB.com's list so somebody to be interested in
It's top 3 and they haven't lost yet but they have K'd 6 times vs Snell so far ... but also have 4 hits so the BABIP is sky high.
Not my experience. You don't notice the shift based on rate differentials, you notice it when a well struck grounder to right is eaten up by a dramatically shifted shortstop or second baseman playing short right field.
Automatic Strike
0 - 2
Batter Pitch Timer Violation
I'm waiting for the "struck out on 2 pitches" call.
That is truly amazing. They are a respectable 83-76 in games 2-4 since 1970.
But in reality, most of those would have been gobbled up by normal play, people are just projecting better than normal defense onto plays.
Yes there are plays that do get gobbled up by the shift, but the volume on a per game basis wouldn't be noticeable to the average fan.
You can see the same thing at the national HOF induction ceremonies - a lot of great black ballplayers.
I hope the league can entice black players back into baseball.
The cards have lost so many of their 1960s/70s greats lately. Only Joe Torre showed up yesterday. Herzog showed up as well at 91 years of age.
Stand outside on the lawn and count to 8 Mississippi and see how long that is. Surely the guard could see violence wasn't needed.
What the fan did was stupid, but trying to injure some one because of it is just as stupid. It's a microcosm of all the issues that are playing out between the public and the police.
Mets-Marlins game end time: 8:53 pm
had an hour-long phone call (yada yada yada), then figured I'd catch the last few innings.
flipped on SNY, and Alonso had just HR'd to tie the game with 1 out in the 9th inning. 5 minutes later, the game is over.
and no, I am NOT complaining. I'll adjust, and early risers can watch the end of ballgames. it's all good.
ha !
yes, it went from 2-0 to 2-1
I had too much adrenaline, apparently, from the frenzied pace. I blame MLB
Edit: Should have hit refresh before posting.
Coke to Salvomania.
EDIT: singles off the wall. The ball came off the wall hard and they held the runner.
