Omnichatter for September 2023

One month to go. Atlanta and LA are the only teams that have (essentially) wrapped up their divisions, each with a magic number of 16.

The AL Wild Cards right now would be Tampa Bay, Houston, and Texas. Toronto (2.5 games back) and Boston (6.5) are the only conceivable threats.

In the NL, the Phillies, Cubs, and Giants lead a trio of teams for the Wild Card—DBacks (1 game back), Reds (1.5), and Marlins (3). Count the Brewers in that mix since they lead the Central by 3 games and would have to fall pretty far to lose the division and miss the playoffs

Solid article at ESPN on the super-low BA success of Schwarber and Muncy with a few cool (or "cool" leaderboards). It's hard to argue with 100 RS and 100 RBI in a season.

Most RS by a player hitting under 200
Schwarber 2023 104
Gallo 2021 90
Crosetti 1940 84

Lowest BA by a player scoring 100 runs
Schwarber 2023 198
Schwarber 2022 218
Donie Bush 1912 231

Most RBI hitting under 200
Schwarber 2023 100
Reynolds 2010 85
C Pena 2010 84

Lowest BA 100+ RBI
Schwarber 2023 198
Muncy 2023 211
K Seager 2021 212

Most Rbat (b-r) hitting under 215
Tenace 1974 +26
Schwarber 2023 +16
Killebrew 1969 +15
Gallo 2017 +14
Gallo 2021 +13
Muncy 2023 +12

Kershaw battles his way through 5 IP and he's done.

Kershaw September outings:
5th - 3 ER, 5 IP, 5 H, 5 BB, 3 K
16th - 0 ER, 4 IP, 2 H, 2 BB, 4 K
tonight - 0 ER, 5 IP, 2 H, 2 BB, 5 K

had his whole family in the stands tonight, and waved to them as he left the mound.

likely a W tonight - LA leads, 5-0 - but I doubt he goes 5 IP next week with the playoffs looming.
does he return in 2024 to get into the top 100? entering tonight:

97. Kevin Brown (19) 211 3256.1
Bobo Newsom (20) 211 3759.1
Billy Pierce (18) 211 3306.2
Bob Welch (17) 211 3092.0

101. Jesse Haines+ (19) 210 3208.2

102. Vida Blue (17) 209 3343.1
Eddie Cicotte (14) 209 3226.0
Don Drysdale+ (14) 209 3432.0
CLAYTON KERSHAW (16, 35) 209 2702.1
Milt Pappas (17) 209 3186.0

Walker stole a homerun from Campusano, who then gifted Walker with another assist as he's admiring his long single...

Okay, more context.... Campusano hits the ball over the fence, but short enough that a good outfielder will steal a homerun by catching the ball over the fence... Walker instead has the ball in his glove and when pulling it back, flips the ball back to the field instead of fully catching it... he of course realizes fully that it's not a homerun and picks the ball up and throws it to second for an easy assist, because Campusano was doing a homerun trot on a ball that would have cleared the fence by less than a foot.
   505. Howie Menckel Posted: September 23, 2023 at 11:04 PM (#6142127)
to be fair, Campusano's team had a comfortable 1-0 lead at the time and they only need to win every single game from now until the finish and then pray for a miracle (and oops, they now trail 2-1). plus he was leading off the inning.

with almost 250 AB in the bigs and on the cusp of turning age 25, he's earned his right to coast !

Cards fans seem to be in two camps on Masynn Winn. Some think he's a black hole as a hitter. Others like me think he's Ozzie Smith-lite defensively (my camp).

He's made two spectacular plays tonight on defense and just drove in the key runs in the game. This guy is going to be really good but it might take a year or two for the bat to show up.

He doesn't have Smiths reflexes, hands or range but all of those are quite good. He's got an absolute cannon for an arm and he seems like he will be a team leader too. I'm much more excited about him than Walker, and Walker will be good.

If a pitcher requests a new baseball, does that count as a "disengagement"? It seems to reset the pitch clock, anyway.
   508. The Duke Posted: September 23, 2023 at 11:59 PM (#6142135)
Padres missed a chance to win in 9th but now have the upper hand in 10th
   509. Howie Menckel Posted: September 24, 2023 at 12:07 AM (#6142137)
2-2, bottom 10, Soto is the Manfred Man and Machado gets the IBB.

our boy Campusano (heh) comes up and - oh, he grounds into a DP.

Kim IBB, here's Eguy Rosario, and he whiffs.

we go to the 11th

are Padres still winless in extra innings?

Cardinals started a guy named "Irving" - first one in MLB since Irving Falu, also an infielder, in 2014.
   510. The Duke Posted: September 24, 2023 at 12:19 AM (#6142138)
Cards score three in 11th. padres look cooked. They had their chances and missed

And Padres win streak ends
   511. Howie Menckel Posted: September 24, 2023 at 12:25 AM (#6142139)
yep, Padres now 0-12 in extra innings this year

maybe it's "luck" - and maybe it isn't.

Padres held scoreless, even with Manfred Mans, in the last 2 innings against a 35-year-old tomato can named Casey Lawrence (he turns 36 next month), who entered the game with a career 6.69 ERA in 117 MLB IP (154 H and 47 BB).
   512. The Duke Posted: September 24, 2023 at 12:28 AM (#6142140)
It didn't look like luck to me. They had sacks jammed in 9th with no one out, a wild pitcher and only got one run with their best hitters up.

And their catcher made two horrid tags at the plate that cost them 2+ runs
   513. Walt Davis Posted: September 24, 2023 at 01:37 AM (#6142142)
Others like me think he's Ozzie Smith-lite defensively

Cards should trade him to the Padres for Bogaerts. :-)

So the Pirates pulled off the biggest rally in their 140 year history and I, a 58-year fan, was watching Tombstone instead of the ballgame because the Pirates have sold my eyeballs to cable TV. I have to wonder how many kids won't turn out to be fans because they couldn't form a connection because they weren't allowed to see the games?
   516. The Duke Posted: September 24, 2023 at 11:48 AM (#6142156)
You could get an MLB subscription. The only market that is blacked out in 15106 zip code are the Pirates so presumably you could see the reds games from there.
   517. Bote Man Posted: September 24, 2023 at 01:31 PM (#6142162)
MLB blackouts follow the team wherever they go, so for example I can't watch the Marlins even when they play the Mariners clear across the other corner of the country.

Closer-of-the-day Merryweather walks the first two Rockies in the 9th - so the next two helpfully swing at the first pitch. Cubs hang on to finish the sweep and cling to the third WC; now to see how hard the Braves and Brewers are trying next week.

IDK, it's all about who gets hot in October. I mean, Braves are best team but there are no guarantees. I could make a case for every playoff team in AL to win the pennant!
   521. Cris E Posted: September 25, 2023 at 08:27 PM (#6142238)
OK no one talks about this stuff anymore, so can I just complain that Immaculate Grid just told me that a certain catcher who clearly played for the White Sox was not a Gold Glove winner? Perhaps it's because he won his GG in his first year as a 1B, but that seems like such a distinction would make things much harder than necessary. Grr.
   522. Bret Sabermatrician Posted: September 25, 2023 at 08:55 PM (#6142246)
I'd be surprised if the Braves win it all this year. Their pitching has gone from a liability to a collapse in the last month.
   523. salvomania Posted: September 25, 2023 at 10:54 PM (#6142252)
certain catcher who clearly played for the White Sox was not a Gold Glove winner?

You know to get credit for the answer the guy has to have won the award while he played for the White Sox. According to my possibly not very thorough research the only catchers who at some point won a Gold Glove with the White Sox are Sherm Lollar in the '50s and Mike Squires, who was a 1B who also caught two innings for the Sox in 1980.

arent the LAD favored at this pt?
   526. The Duke Posted: September 26, 2023 at 11:07 AM (#6142291)
Why would LA be favored? Their pitching is a wreck. Atlanta's pitchers are dropping like flies too.

If I had to pick the NL representative right now I'd pick the Phillies and their new God Kerkering but I'd need to see the brackets first

The brewers pitching is amazing but I'm guessing they peaked a month too early.

On the AL side, it feels like an open competition to me. I'm going to stick with Houston as I think they thrive on the drama, but maybe Baltimore ? I wonder whether Holliday should have been brought up Aug 31 to be eligible. Do they really have 13 players better than him ?
   527. Tony S Posted: September 26, 2023 at 11:24 AM (#6142292)
The Astros' pitching is a trainwreck, too, though Verlander had a good game last night. They're not going anywhere, even if they manage to squeak into the final slot.

I think Holliday is probably ready to play in the majors, but I don't think he's *better*, at this particular point in time, than their other infield options. I don't see any urgency to get him on the roster. Henderson, Westburg, Urias... they can all play. Mateo is a perfectly cromulent Mark Belanger type.

I wonder whether Holliday should have been brought up Aug 31 to be eligible.

He'd still be postseason eligible if he was brought up due to being in the organization prior to the deadline. Adelberto Mondesi was added to the Royals roster prior to the World Series in 2015 without being in the majors at all that year.

Per BaseballReference

Brewers runs against by month

July: 4.28
August: 3.88
September: 2.91

   530. The Duke Posted: September 26, 2023 at 01:01 PM (#6142301)
528. But he isn't on the 40 man roster is he? They can't put him on the playoff team now, can they ? I guess I misspoke. They could have put him on 40 man and not called him up and he'd still be eligible but that would be a weird thing to do.

Why would LA be favored? Their pitching is a wreck.

Apparently Kershaw is going to set the record for fewest innings pitched by a division winner in a full season, or something similar. He's currently at 126.1; only Urias is within 10, and he's not catching up for obvious reasons.

534--not if you believe the numbers on BaseballReference

Career 2 outs RISP: .717
Late and close: .722
Tie game: .722

He played a lot in the 60's but even adjusted for context that doesn't look very impressive

In the postseason he had an overall OPS of .785 which for the time is pretty good

In 21 WS games .697 Hit well in two and hit poorly in two.

But he isn't on the 40 man roster is he? They can't put him on the playoff team now, can they ?

Yes, they can. 40-man guys as of August 31st are automatically eligible for the postseason, but any non-40-man guys who are in the organization as of that date are eligible to replace any injured 40-man players, even guys who were already on the IL on August 31st.
   537. NaOH Posted: September 26, 2023 at 09:08 PM (#6142344)
I did not realize teams could do multiple challenges at once. The Reds challenged this play at the plate and the umpire can be heard announcing, "Cincinnati is challenging the home-plate-collision rule and the out call at home plate." Surprising to me that one incorrect challenge can cost a team future challenges, but a team can make multiple challenges at once, yet the rules don't count them as such because
A manager may challenge as many reviewable calls within a single play as he desires using one challenge. The club retains its manager challenge if the replay official overturns any challenged call (even if he upholds other challenged calls), and loses its manager challenge if no calls are overturned.

And the collapse is complete with a dropped ball by Suzuki, plating two runs and giving Atlanta the lead for the first time going into the ninth. Wow. That felt inevitable as soon as the Braves nabbed a couple of runs.

Waino is done for the year and made 21 starts. Royals retro published this list a couple months ago:

Pitchers with 15+ starts, and an ERA over 8 since 1900:

Adam Wainwright 2023, STL 8.61
Jonathan Sanchez 2012, COL/KC 8.07
Hideo Nomo 2004, LAD 8.25
Chad Durbin 2000, KCR 8.21
Mark Clark 1999, TEX 8.60
Todd Van Poppel 1996, DET/OAK 9.06
Steve Blass 1973, PIT 9.85
Ed Holley 1934, PHI/PIT 8.12

None of those guys went in to make 20 starts. Does this make Waino the worst pitcher ever for 20 games started (note that he rallied a bit from this point forward )?

We've been discussing players who only played for one team. Who is the active leader for each team (ie only played for one team, so Miguel Cabrera is not the Tigers answer)

TEAM AND YEAR OF MLB DEBUT

Atlanta Braves (2017)
Baltimore Orioles (2017)
Boston Red Sox (2017)
Chicago Cubs (2014)
Chicago White Sox (2016)
Cincinnati Reds (2007)
Cleveland Indians/Guardians (2013)
Colorado Rockies (2011)
Detroit Tigers (2018)
Houston Astros (2011)
Kansas City Royals (2011)
Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim/Angels (2011)
Los Angeles Dodgers (2008)

One of them is quite contentious and been in the news lately (no, not Josh Hader ).

Royals is Salvador Perez. Astros is Altuve. Reds and Dodgers are too easy. Phillies is probably Aaron Nola. Giants is Crawford.

Edit: removed those already guessed.
   553. JJ1986 Posted: September 27, 2023 at 02:47 PM (#6142420)
Orioles is probably Anthony Santander.
   554. JJ1986 Posted: September 27, 2023 at 02:49 PM (#6142422)
Gonna guess the Marlin is Trevor Rogers, because almost everyone else on that team has played somewhere else.
   555. Tom Nawrocki Posted: September 27, 2023 at 02:50 PM (#6142424)
Tim Anderson for the White Sox.
   556. The Duke Posted: September 27, 2023 at 03:32 PM (#6142440)
Anderson, nimmo, Santander (good guess ), houser, Perez, altuve crawford, Blackmon, Strausburg, Nola and Crawford are correct

Albies is correct

Rogers appears to be just 4 days shy of the title for the marlins

FWIW for anyone interested Houser was injured and pitched 82 innings in the minors in 2016 and 2017 combined.

Did he make his debut in 2015? Yes. Is he longest tenured with Crew? No

This is was discussed on a Brewer message board like a year ago and the person who claimed Houser as the senior Brewer was mocked big time

Consensus there was that Woodruff is the answer. Showed up 2017

He is also described in Brewer telecasts in same fashion. Brian Anderson being a baseball nerd mentions Houser but then states that the senior statesman of Crew is Woodruff.

Just tossing this out for clarification

Kodai Senga had gone all of his rookie season without a single batter "going yard" against his fabled "ghost pitch."

but Bye, Bye, says (Jon) Berti to lead off the second game of a twinbill vs Mets.

For the younger crowd, a helpful cultural reference.

Whoever the Red Sox player is, I'm sure they'll trade him away for either an injured relief pitcher or a bag of beans; whichever is worth less.

Two 2-run HRs by Aaron Judge and a 2-run double by Giancarlo Stanton gives the Yankees a 6-0 lead at Toronto. Cole still in there heading into bottom of the 7th. Yankees can clinch 4th place in the AL East with a win. Not much of a consolation prize, but better than last.

EDIT: Cole adds a scoreless 7th, lowering his ERA to a CY Young worthy 2.65. Only at 80 pitches, but I wouldn’t expect more in a game that is fairly meaningless.

Paul Blackburn? Brandon Lowe? Danny Jansen?
   575. The Yankee Clapper Posted: September 27, 2023 at 09:24 PM (#6142522)
Cole not only pitched a scoreless 8th, but did the same in the 9th. A complete game shutout is a nice cherry on top of a stellar season. Yanks win 6-0.

Wally, an ‘emotional support alligator’, was denied entry to Citizens Bank Park yesterday:
A Philadelphia Phillies fan and his emotional support alligator, Wally, were denied entry into Wednesday's game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The fan, identified by The Philadelphia Inquirer as Joie Henney, arrived at Citizens Bank Park walking Wally on a leash, claiming the nearly 5-foot alligator as his service animal.
. . .
Wally's denied entry drew comparisons to the famous "Curse of the Billy Goat" involving the Chicago Cubs. In 1945, William Sianis put a curse on the Cubs when he and his goat were denied entry into a World Series game at Wrigley Field.
Seems to be a stunt to gain social media followers. Will try not to laugh if this guy gets bitten.

Yes Blackmon was already guessed and confirmed as correct. Pretty sure the Yankee has already been named as well.

Up to now, the Padres' extra-inning futility has received a bit of attention, but the Astros at 1–8 in extras have been pretty bad, too, and don't seem to have drawn much attention anywhere for this poor performance.

Probably because (a) the Astros, for all their follies, have remained contenders, and (b) their 2-7 record against two 100-loss teams in September is probably the main reason they're hanging by a thread.

Perhaps. However the care factor is nil as Boston is a sad shell of a baseball team.

More importantly Corbin Carrol with his 10th triple and becomes the first player ever with 25 homers, 50 SBs and 10 triples. Sure the totals are arbitrary, but hey it's still cool.

What was the Neris and Julio thing about. Neris just started screaming at him and apparently with some not nice words. I don't usually care to worry about heat of the moment stuff but when you go out of your way to create the moment that seems suspendable
   596. Howie Menckel Posted: September 28, 2023 at 07:30 PM (#6142660)
Julio hot-dogged around the bases after a HR off Neris last year.

apparently they know each other pretty well - even same agent?

the Astros and M's just hate each other, so lots of other stuff going on the past couple of years.

one guy got drilled in the back, I saw a replay of same player nearing first base on a close play trying to jostle the 1B's arm - potentially a very dangerous move.

both teams seem a bit unhinged from what I've seen, but I'm an NL guy.

Olson with homer #54 and RBI up to 136. If this were 1987, he's the certain MVP right? Alas, for poor Matt, we understand things better and he'll most likely finished 3rd this year in the voting.

Angel Hernandez at 3B punched out Bryce Harper on a pitch where Harper barely took the bat off his shoulder.

Harper got ejected and walked 100 feet or so to let Angel know what a disgrace he is to his profession - which of course is true.

I wonder if a court can consider video of 1000 or more outrageously bad Hernandez calls if and when he finally gets fired.

will Harper miss a playoff game?

if it were a usually competent ump, I'd say he should. in this case, just sit him down for the final 3 games of the regular season and move on. let Angel stay home and let Harper play in the playoffs.
