One month to go. Atlanta and LA are the only teams that have (essentially) wrapped up their divisions, each with a magic number of 16.
The AL Wild Cards right now would be Tampa Bay, Houston, and Texas. Toronto (2.5 games back) and Boston (6.5) are the only conceivable threats.
In the NL, the Phillies, Cubs, and Giants lead a trio of teams for the Wild Card—DBacks (1 game back), Reds (1.5), and Marlins (3). Count the Brewers in that mix since they lead the Central by 3 games and would have to fall pretty far to lose the division and miss the playoffs

Kershaw September outings:
5th - 3 ER, 5 IP, 5 H, 5 BB, 3 K
16th - 0 ER, 4 IP, 2 H, 2 BB, 4 K
tonight - 0 ER, 5 IP, 2 H, 2 BB, 5 K
had his whole family in the stands tonight, and waved to them as he left the mound.
likely a W tonight - LA leads, 5-0 - but I doubt he goes 5 IP next week with the playoffs looming.
does he return in 2024 to get into the top 100? entering tonight:
97. Kevin Brown (19) 211 3256.1
Bobo Newsom (20) 211 3759.1

Okay, more context.... Campusano hits the ball over the fence, but short enough that a good outfielder will steal a homerun by catching the ball over the fence... Walker instead has the ball in his glove and when pulling it back, flips the ball back to the field instead of fully catching it... he of course realizes fully that it's not a homerun and picks the ball up and throws it to second for an easy assist, because Campusano was doing a homerun trot on a ball that would have cleared the fence by less than a foot.
with almost 250 AB in the bigs and on the cusp of turning age 25, he's earned his right to coast !
He's made two spectacular plays tonight on defense and just drove in the key runs in the game. This guy is going to be really good but it might take a year or two for the bat to show up.
He doesn't have Smiths reflexes, hands or range but all of those are quite good. He's got an absolute cannon for an arm and he seems like he will be a team leader too. I'm much more excited about him than Walker, and Walker will be good.
our boy Campusano (heh) comes up and - oh, he grounds into a DP.
Kim IBB, here's Eguy Rosario, and he whiffs.
we go to the 11th
are Padres still winless in extra innings?
Cardinals started a guy named "Irving" - first one in MLB since Irving Falu, also an infielder, in 2014.
And Padres win streak ends
maybe it's "luck" - and maybe it isn't.
Padres held scoreless, even with Manfred Mans, in the last 2 innings against a 35-year-old tomato can named Casey Lawrence (he turns 36 next month), who entered the game with a career 6.69 ERA in 117 MLB IP (154 H and 47 BB).
And their catcher made two horrid tags at the plate that cost them 2+ runs
Cards should trade him to the Padres for Bogaerts. :-)
They aren't even trying anymore.
- didn't try today neither. you get your a$$ handed to you by the freaking royals, it is OVAH. the 2 rookie pitchers got th excuse at least that they are tired and haven't nevah pitched this much but framber, christian and the Old Guy got no excuse and neither does pressly
wondering when they gonna start blaming dusty
You know to get credit for the answer the guy has to have won the award while he played for the White Sox. According to my possibly not very thorough research the only catchers who at some point won a Gold Glove with the White Sox are Sherm Lollar in the '50s and Mike Squires, who was a 1B who also caught two innings for the Sox in 1980.
If I had to pick the NL representative right now I'd pick the Phillies and their new God Kerkering but I'd need to see the brackets first
The brewers pitching is amazing but I'm guessing they peaked a month too early.
On the AL side, it feels like an open competition to me. I'm going to stick with Houston as I think they thrive on the drama, but maybe Baltimore ? I wonder whether Holliday should have been brought up Aug 31 to be eligible. Do they really have 13 players better than him ?
I think Holliday is probably ready to play in the majors, but I don't think he's *better*, at this particular point in time, than their other infield options. I don't see any urgency to get him on the roster. Henderson, Westburg, Urias... they can all play. Mateo is a perfectly cromulent Mark Belanger type.
He'd still be postseason eligible if he was brought up due to being in the organization prior to the deadline. Adelberto Mondesi was added to the Royals roster prior to the World Series in 2015 without being in the majors at all that year.
Brewers runs against by month
July: 4.28
August: 3.88
September: 2.91
Apparently Kershaw is going to set the record for fewest innings pitched by a division winner in a full season, or something similar. He's currently at 126.1; only Urias is within 10, and he's not catching up for obvious reasons.
Career 2 outs RISP: .717
Late and close: .722
Tie game: .722
He played a lot in the 60's but even adjusted for context that doesn't look very impressive
In the postseason he had an overall OPS of .785 which for the time is pretty good
In 21 WS games .697 Hit well in two and hit poorly in two.
Yes, they can. 40-man guys as of August 31st are automatically eligible for the postseason, but any non-40-man guys who are in the organization as of that date are eligible to replace any injured 40-man players, even guys who were already on the IL on August 31st.
Maybe I’m the last to know.
Well, this is sure to help his HOF case with the VC:
Curt Schilling Shares Post Claiming Jews Are ‘Dominating’ the Country When ‘They Didn’t Even Found’ It
Pitchers with 15+ starts, and an ERA over 8 since 1900:
Adam Wainwright 2023, STL 8.61
Jonathan Sanchez 2012, COL/KC 8.07
Hideo Nomo 2004, LAD 8.25
Chad Durbin 2000, KCR 8.21
Mark Clark 1999, TEX 8.60
Todd Van Poppel 1996, DET/OAK 9.06
Steve Blass 1973, PIT 9.85
Ed Holley 1934, PHI/PIT 8.12
None of those guys went in to make 20 starts. Does this make Waino the worst pitcher ever for 20 games started (note that he rallied a bit from this point forward )?

Did he make his debut in 2015? Yes. Is he longest tenured with Crew? No
This is was discussed on a Brewer message board like a year ago and the person who claimed Houser as the senior Brewer was mocked big time
Consensus there was that Woodruff is the answer. Showed up 2017
He is also described in Brewer telecasts in same fashion. Brian Anderson being a baseball nerd mentions Houser but then states that the senior statesman of Crew is Woodruff.
Just tossing this out for clarification
but Bye, Bye, says (Jon) Berti to lead off the second game of a twinbill vs Mets.

EDIT: Cole adds a scoreless 7th, lowering his ERA to a CY Young worthy 2.65. Only at 80 pitches, but I wouldn’t expect more in a game that is fairly meaningless.
Wainwright didn't debut until September, 2005.
There are three more that should be easy. The rest are going to be harder
EDIT: Sorry, didn't realize it was only players who debuted for the team
Yes Blackmon was already guessed and confirmed as correct. Pretty sure the Yankee has already been named as well.
I'm also going to guess Tatis for the Padres. 2019 was his rookie year.
I had it wrong (with Higashioka) and when The Duke didn't confirm it I checked. It's Luis Severino.
Up to now, the Padres' extra-inning futility has received a bit of attention, but the Astros at 1–8 in extras have been pretty bad, too, and don't seem to have drawn much attention anywhere for this poor performance.
Probably because (a) the Astros, for all their follies, have remained contenders, and (b) their 2-7 record against two 100-loss teams in September is probably the main reason they're hanging by a thread.

The only easy one remaining is Boston. The rest get harder
Perhaps. However the care factor is nil as Boston is a sad shell of a baseball team.
More importantly Corbin Carrol with his 10th triple and becomes the first player ever with 25 homers, 50 SBs and 10 triples. Sure the totals are arbitrary, but hey it's still cool.
How many times has he hit for The Cycle?
apparently they know each other pretty well - even same agent?
the Astros and M's just hate each other, so lots of other stuff going on the past couple of years.
one guy got drilled in the back, I saw a replay of same player nearing first base on a close play trying to jostle the 1B's arm - potentially a very dangerous move.
both teams seem a bit unhinged from what I've seen, but I'm an NL guy.
Jamison Hensley
@jamisonhensley
Orioles just announced at Camden Yards that they have agreed to a new lease that keeps them in Baltimore for at least the next 30 years
Harper got ejected and walked 100 feet or so to let Angel know what a disgrace he is to his profession - which of course is true.
I wonder if a court can consider video of 1000 or more outrageously bad Hernandez calls if and when he finally gets fired.
will Harper miss a playoff game?
if it were a usually competent ump, I'd say he should. in this case, just sit him down for the final 3 games of the regular season and move on. let Angel stay home and let Harper play in the playoffs.
