#1376 -- this is on the offense. Dreadful situational hitting in the early innings.

How many scorching liners did the Astros hit right at a defender in the first five innings?

I know "bad luck" is a really unsatisfying explanation to contemplate for why your team won and my team lost, but...

Will Harris will have to continue to buy his own beer in bars around Houston....
   1403. The Yankee Clapper Posted: October 30, 2019 at 10:36 PM (#5896936)
The Nationals supposedly now have a 62.7% probability of winning. Doesn’t really feel like it, but their chances are a lot better than they were 10 minutes ago.

Quite the series

I feel like a 2 in 3 chance undersells it.

silly post, scrubbed it.

Let’s see if I can last the 2-3 hours it will take to get to the 9th

The Astros have nine outs still. It would behoove them not to give up any more runs. Settle down, guys... this game is still winnable.
1410. It's regretful that PASTE was able to get out Posted: October 30, 2019 at 10:41 PM (#5896945)
I hope for Houston's sake that "high fastball after high fastball after high fastball" was a Gomes-specific strategy and not Osuna's general philosophy tonight.

edit: It was!
   1411. TomH Posted: October 30, 2019 at 10:42 PM (#5896946)
how many HR have been hit in WS game 7s that take a team from behind to in the lead?

I know of this Hal Smith guy..... any others?
   1412. Sunday silence Posted: October 30, 2019 at 10:42 PM (#5896947)
24% WIN probability change with that blast by Kendrick

Howie Kendrick now has 4 career #postseason home runs

One each - solo, 2-run, 3-run & grand slam

Heh

Will Harris is the first pitcher since Ray Kremer in 1925 to allow HRs in Game 6 and 7 of the same #WorldSeries
1416. It's regretful that PASTE was able to get out Posted: October 30, 2019 at 10:45 PM (#5896955)
Wait, is that the same Will Harris that blew the ALDS against the Royals back in 2015?

That's the guy Hinch pulled Greinke for??

nice, Howie!

Anthony Rendon's plate appearances in the 7th inning or later of the Nationals' five elimination games this season:

Walk, double, home run, double, home run, double, home run

Howie Kendrick is only player in MLB history with multiple career go-ahead HR in 7th inning or later of a "winner-take-all" game. |

Kendrick has hit both in this postseason (other was ALDS Game 5).

Totally silly fun at the Nationals Park watch party 7th inning stretch when they played A-Ha's "Take On Me" and the whole crowd chimed in.

Confession: I've watched most of the games this postseason, but tonight is the very first one I've watched live. I've been watching everything next-day on my computer, skipping to the next pitch with a flick of the mouse wheel and skipping TV ad breaks with a couple up-arrows. I can watch a whole game in under an hour. It's wonderful.

That french horn Baby Shark arrangement was the greatest thing I've seen this entire postseason.

1429: I skip all the commercials, and yes in blowouts I'll blast through entire innings at a time without a pause.

I love this one, though. yes, commercials are zapped, but I am FFing to the next pitch less than ever.

I tried this once. Maybe I'm old, but I hated it. I did used to watch the condensed game on MLBAM, though, which I liked better because someone else put them together.

Yeah. Obviously I have to stay clear of BTF (besides the off-topic threads) but the games don't even start until 8:20, and I'm not much of a media consumer, so it's not really that hard. I watch the game when I get home from work, or first thing in the morning if I'm not working.

Even with the grotesque excess of the Three True Outcomes these days, baseball is still great when you can skip past all the standing around.
   1438. Tin Angel Posted: October 30, 2019 at 11:00 PM (#5896985)
Joe Buck is not great, but it could be a lot worse (see ESPN). He's just bland.

The Baseball Gauge is updating their cWPA stuff in real-time. Kendrick's HR is the 10th all time, just behind (or tied with?) Berra and ahead of Mazeroski.

I did a less extreme version of that last night. It as glorious. I was almost tempted to do it again tonight.

Rendon's contract this offseason: over or under $300 million?

Har.

The National Symphony Orchestra is OKAY, not necessarily A-level, but good. Eschenbach, who left in 2017, was a good conductor. I'm not that familiar with the new guy.

Totally silly fun at the Nationals Park watch party 7th inning stretch when they played A-Ha's "Take On Me" and the whole crowd chimed in.

It was almost a tradition, but the people running the Nationals killed it off.

That said, the Nationals' fan-base has always had fun with music.

Great question!

Martinez got away with sticking with Scherzer too long, but Hinch's handling of his pitchers has been... uh... dubious.
   1464. KronicFatigue Posted: October 30, 2019 at 11:06 PM (#5897011)
I'm JUST drunk enough to think this is a good idea.

Once a team takes the lead, they continue to stay in the field until the other team takes the lead. So team A takes the lead in the third inning. They stay in field until team b takes the lead. Team b loses any base runners they've accumulated every third out.

Game moves a lot faster. Not sure how long pitchers could go in this situation.
   1465. stanmvp48 Posted: October 30, 2019 at 11:06 PM (#5897012)

Not walking Soto with a runner on 2nd was a mistake. Do the Astros not know who he is? Not that there were any good options.

Very kind of them to let him use the WS bullpen spotlight for that.

With nothing but offspeed stuff nowhere near the center of the plate. See if he's willing to reach out and pop/ground out. If he takes a walk, I can live with that.

Oh, and with somebody other than Osuna.

Rendon is my MVP. Some INCREDIBLE diving stabs to rob base hits, one or two of those would've gone for extra bases, plus the hitting prowess. Alternate: Strasburg.

Let me make sure I have this right.

Zack Greinke is lights out for five innings--pull him the instant he starts to falter.

In favor of... Will Harris. Instead of Gerrit Cole, who was perfectly warm.

Then when Will Harris does what everyone in the world except A.J. Hinch presumed Will Harris would do, turn to Gerri--no, wait, Roberto Osuna.

And then when Osuna struggles... just leave him out there. He'll get through it.

I'm sorry, I'm just struggling with this. Did the Astros change managers in there? The guy who insta-hooked Greinke wasn't the same guy who decided to just see if Osuna could work his way out of his jam, right? Someone help me out here. I'm so confused.
