1501. It's regretful that PASTE was able to get out Posted: October 30, 2019 at 11:16 PM (#5897050)
Managers tend to prefer to bring in SP to clean innings. So maybe he could have brought in Cole before the BB to Soto.

OK--but then why the hell was Cole warming up (and then sitting down) in the first place?

The season is on the line, and the Astros have several better pitchers than Will Harris (who pitched, poorly, last night, to boot) available.

That was bad, but it's the quick hook with Greinke but slow hook with Osuna that blows my mind.

Managers should prefer not to be down another run.
   1503. The Yankee Clapper Posted: October 30, 2019 at 11:16 PM (#5897052)
Why isn’t Cole out there?
I think Cole hasn’t pitched in relief in a dozen years, and the plan was to only bring him in at the start of an inning so he could warm up more like a starter. We’ll never know if he’d have been able to staunch the bleeding earlier.

That strike 3 to Correa was way off the plate.

Pitching's pitching. Whether there's somebody on base or not, you just gotta get the hitter out.

Consider that payback for all those strikes Greinke was getting earlier in the game.
   1511. salvomania Posted: October 30, 2019 at 11:19 PM (#5897060)
This HP ump has had more way-off-the-plate strike calls than I've seen in any game in along time.

Not what you want in a Game 7.

Agreed. Just go pitch. It's Game 7.

Do we just presume the graphic box is correct?

We shouldn't, because it's the same damn height for every hitter. But I think it's somewhat trustworthy at the sides.

3-2 on Marisnick might be time for a mid-batter pitching change.

There is a very brief video/animated GIF floating around that shows the TV crew adjusting the on-screen K-zone box up/down/sideways a few times. The idea that it represents The One True Strike Zone is FALSE.
1520. It's regretful that PASTE was able to get out Posted: October 30, 2019 at 11:23 PM (#5897069)
On the other hand, that pitch would have been clearly a ball on a black-and-white TV in 1971. No one needed the ~K-Zone~ to see it was a bad call.
   1521. Red Voodooin Posted: October 30, 2019 at 11:24 PM (#5897070)
Maybe Cole was just a decoy and they knew he just didn't have it today. If that's true it makes the decision pull Greinke even stranger.

90.07% Win Probability. Still feels like less.

Who pitches to the top of the order in the bottom of the ninth? I would go with Doolittle before Hudson.

Consider that payback for all those strikes Greinke was getting earlier in the game.

per my earlier post, more grist for conspiracy kooks:

it's true that Greinke and Randy Wolf were in the Brewers rotation in 2011.
and the ump is Wolf's brother.
Greinke seemed to get some calls from his ex-teammate's brother.
Greinke lifted from the game surprisingly early.
a bitter ump Wolf sticks it to the impudent Astros with that awful 8th-inning punchout.

it's silly, but not as much heavy lifting as some conspiracy theories!
:)
1527. It's regretful that PASTE was able to get out Posted: October 30, 2019 at 11:26 PM (#5897076)
2 run lead for the visiting team going into the top of the 9th feels closer to 95% than 90% to me.

Strasburg threw 100+ pitches yesterday, I'd use Doolittle and Hudson both before turning to him.

Only 9 strikeouts combined entering 9th inning. Not exactly the 1960 game 7, but really surprising for these teams.

What % of HOUSTON innings in 2019 scored at least 2, and at least 3? My guess 10% or more.
Of course you also need to stop the Nats from scoring!
   1536. JAHV Posted: October 30, 2019 at 11:27 PM (#5897086)
Whom do the Nats bring in for Springer and Altuve? Leave Corbin in? Go with Hudson? Do they then bring in Doolittle for Brantley? But I don't think you want Doolittle for Bregman, unless the plan is just to walk him.
   1537. Zach Posted: October 30, 2019 at 11:28 PM (#5897087)
Greinke was still dealing and hitting his spots. They pulled him too early.

In a close game in the 9th inning you're facing a better-than-average pitcher, though. Plus, yeah, Washington gets to bat.

Looks like they're going to tack on one or two more runs and salt the game away, though. I presume it'll be Hudson closing it out.
1540. It's regretful that PASTE was able to get out Posted: October 30, 2019 at 11:30 PM (#5897090)
Yep, Hudson's getting ready.

I'd have gone with Doolittle, but it doesn't make much difference.

   1550. bunyon Posted: October 30, 2019 at 11:35 PM (#5897100)
I see it on the side bar so I’d just like to point out: the Astros are not hitting like the 27 Yankees.

I can’t believe Hinch didn’t use Cole for the 9th. Keep it a 2 run game and give the Astros one more shot with their scary top of the lineup.

We’ll see what Yer Kitty can do.

Firing him over it is extreme, but Hinch certainly had a very bad night tonight.

I also think it's possible something's up with Cole we don't know about--but, geez, panic-pulling Greinke for ####### Will Harris and then leaving Osuna out there to get kicked around an inning latter, that's deeply weird.

I'm sure it was always The Plan to pull Greinke at the first sign of trouble. I'm prepared to give Hinch the benefit of the doubt about that. Everything that followed after that, however... was that The Plan? Really??

Hinch made one mistake. He pulled Greinke too early. His hitters didn’t take advantage of a bad start by Scherzer (and they got unlucky) and his bullpen has been #### all around. Sometimes there is no recovery from one big mistake.

Greinke hadn’t been able to go 5 innings in 3 of his 4 postseason starts, so I don’t think it’s unreasonable for Hinch to think Greinke may have been near his limit. There’s also the question of what feedback they were getting from Greinke & Chirinos. Not as easy a call as some are contending.
