How 'bout them Os?!

Well THE DUKE, do you have any playoff prognostications for us today? In another thread you mentioned that you thought the Phillies might be your favorite in the NL but you hadn't seen the pairings. I questioned why you would need that to make a prediction but guess what? The pairings are out! And the Phillies play MIA and then ATL then someone...

SO what do you think?

Prediction: Braves over Rays

What I want: Orioles over Marlins

where are the official 26 man rosters for this round? I cant seem to find them in one place.
   6. RoyalsRetro (AG#1F) Posted: October 03, 2023 at 09:49 AM (#6143287)
They usually aren't announced until just before the first game.
   7. sunday silence (again) Posted: October 03, 2023 at 10:34 AM (#6143294)
well hmmm.... The PHI 26 man seems to published on one of the PHI sites.
   8. sunday silence (again) Posted: October 03, 2023 at 11:41 AM (#6143307)
Does anyone have a good take on JOhan Rojas the fleet rookie CF for PHI? OAA has him at 5 runs saved, whereas fielding bible has him at 15 runs including 2 via arm. Baseballref has him at 14 runs. what is going on? he brings long awaited help to PHI defense thats for sure.
   9. The Duke Posted: October 03, 2023 at 11:48 AM (#6143308)
I've filled out my brackets and have Toronto and Texas winning round one. I have Texas and Houston going to ALCS. Houston to WS

On the NL side I've got Mil and Phillies in round 1. dodgers and Phillies in NLCS and Phillies going to Series

Phillies win World Series in a rematch

Predicting a rematch is boring but so be it

That kind of surprised me, too, at least at first. I was expecting 1:00, 4:00, 7:00 and 10:00. But upon further reflection, the problem with that is that with 2 East Coast teams and 2 Central Time Zone teams hosting the games, you'd have to have either the Twins or the Brewers begin their game at 9:00 local time. The last time any MLB game was scheduled at 9:00 was during WW2, when the average game took just over 2 hours, with far fewer commercials in between innings.
   13. sunday silence (again) Posted: October 03, 2023 at 02:15 PM (#6143333)
Its not clear if andy means 9pm or am. In any case I don'think its that difficult. Would 1pm east coast, 3 pm central 5 pm east coast and 7 pm central work? Doesn't that give 3 hour window and no overlap? I'm net really a punctual person so maybe someone could chime in
   14. Bote Man Posted: October 03, 2023 at 02:26 PM (#6143334)

Today's pitchers in the Hankook tires wild card round::

TEX (J. Montgomery) @ TB (Glasnow)
TOR (Gausman) @ MIN (Lopez)
ARI (Pfaadt) @ MIL (Burnes)
MIA (Luzardo) @ PHI (Wheeler)

My rooting interests:

1. Orioles - great story
2. Rays - respect their organization immensely
3. Rangers - fun team, has never won the WS
4. Brewers - have always liked the team, but this year's version is pretty bland

5. Jays - have some exciting players
6. Dodgers - sure they've won a WS, but have suffered more heartache than needed

7-10. Twins/Dbacks/Marlins/Phillies - no strong opinion on these teams

11. Braves - I live in Atlanta, and am in full backlash mode against the fanbase.
12. Astros - who else? Dusty got his ring, the rest of these guys can f off.

Randy Arozarena came into today's game with a career 1.120 OPS in 31 postseason games (120 PA) and so far is 2-for-2 with a single and a double.

Regional blackouts because of cable contracts are bad enough, but when the cable network is ESPN and the region is everywhere, it's infuriating. Major League Baseball doesn't want me to watch baseball? During the playoffs? Hmph. Why should I bother with an MLB.TV account?

the comments are close to what i think. i don't hate houston players but i dislike all of the surrounding org. baltimore would be #1 for me with a different owner, i think. tampa and milwaukee are near the top for me, i guess. i do like bochy quite a bit.

Regional blackouts

Are you telling me that the Rays-Rangers game is blacked out on ABC where you're at?

Or that the later games on ESPN are being blacked out?
   22. Hombre Brotani Posted: October 03, 2023 at 04:27 PM (#6143361)

I'm not around a television, just my computer. I'm watching a feed from a streaming site based in France.
   23. salvomania Posted: October 03, 2023 at 04:31 PM (#6143362)
Do you have cable? I can download the network apps to my phone and watch network TV as long as I have a "TV provider" log in.
   24. salvomania Posted: October 03, 2023 at 04:37 PM (#6143363)
Jordan Montgomery is cruising, five scoreless innings on just 59 pitches.
   25. Hombre Brotani Posted: October 03, 2023 at 04:37 PM (#6143364)
I don't. I cut the cord years ago. Between Internet and the family cell plan, I pay around $350 a month already. I'm willing to pay for all that connectivity, and I still can't watch a game? Hmph, I say.

#25, MLB sells exclusive rights to a cable channel you’re unwilling to subscribe to, but you still get the game for free with a work around, and you’re infuriated? Seems a bit entitled.

So does anyone have the skills to see which players have exceeded their career OPS by as much as Randy has in the post season (using some minimum at bats). He's an .800 OPS guy when the lights aren't shining so brightly. He's got to be a top 10 post-season performer by this metric

I already paid for the right to watch baseball with them by buying an MLB.TV account so, yeah, I feel like I'm entitled to watch a thing I paid for.
   29. The Duke Posted: October 03, 2023 at 05:43 PM (#6143376)
Athletic had an article on Montgomery suggesting he should get a Rodon contract. He's certainly had a nice year. Prices for pitching are going to be so high this winter

Eh, I thought that was the case, but right now I have the Twins game on at work on MLB.TV. Maybe because I'm in Sydney? Is there an exception for this game I'm not aware of?
Though I know for sure I didn't get the playoffs last year and was going to cancel the MBL.tv sub but was too lazy to do it then the this season started and I just kept it.

yeah that ESPN WE tracker makes no effin sense. Gregg Stolls tracker has that situation as 64.7%.

Dont know whats wrong there, these models are usually not that out of whack
   41. Walt Davis Posted: October 03, 2023 at 07:41 PM (#6143395)
I am also watching in NZ. ESPN does actually own the rights (for all MLB playoff games) in Aus/NZ. I'm not sure why I'm getting this either. It might just be for the wild card or maybe it's just today.

Though I know for sure I didn't get the playoffs last year

Not quite true, at least not in NZ. They gave us the wild card for free. Basically they had always given us the playoffs then ESPN apparently acquired the rights for Aus/NZ. But MLB didn't tell anybody the playoffs were no longer availalbe -- I mean I'm sure it was in a "terms of service have changed, here's the link" somewhere but when you have folks on auto-renew, I wouldn't be suprrised if NZ (maybe Aus) law requires them to do a bit more. Anyway, after "heaps" of complaints, they compromised and "gave" us the wild card round.

I did dump my auto-renewal and didn't renew. But after 4-6 weeks, they gave me a half-price offer. That seemed good enough even for 4.5-5 months of regular season baseball. I assumed that was it but the games are on. Unfortunately a 1-month pass for Sky Sport (which carries ESPN) is a whopping $45. No thanks.

I assume this list of international broadcasters is current. If your country isn't listed, I think you still get it free through MLBtv.

SHRM??

From the horse's mouth (MLB.TV):

Eligible MLB.TV subscribers must receive ESPN2 through a participating Pay TV provider to watch the 2023 Postseason LIVE in the U.S. Authentication is required. To link your MLB.TV account to a participating pay TV provider, visit mlb.tv/postseason. Live audio and full game archives are available with a valid MLB.TV subscription 90 minutes after the conclusion of the game.

While trying to reproduce the conditions that generated a message talking about allowing international viewing, I suddenly found myself tuned into the Brewers game, so I am not messing with it. Looks real good here in...Seoul. Yeahhhh, that's the ticket!

oooh, I can't remember if I tried to watch WC games last year as I know I got turfed out in the later rounds for sure.
I remember MLB didn't say anything about it last year, I tried to watch a game and thought, well this is f*cked, how cheap can you get?

Happy to watch these games for now, fingers crossed for later rounds being available.

Hello Bote. No its way off. I was tracking this same stuff last year with the same two models and usually the models are only off by one or two pts. I think maybe 3% max maybe.

We live in the 21st century these run expectancy/WE models are very highly tuned. I think either there's something wrong with maybe the feed I am getting is not keeping up or something wrong at ESPN. They just cant be off that far. no way

   57. sunday silence (again) Posted: October 03, 2023 at 09:08 PM (#6143416)
not sure what you're pt is. The model used by Stull is based on the history of MLB games. Im using the data set from 1920 to 2022 thats 24968 games. Its based on real life data pts and quite a lot it seems to me. You can use different years in the data set and the WE numbers will barely budge.
   58. sunday silence (again) Posted: October 03, 2023 at 09:12 PM (#6143417)
Same situation as mentioned in no. 48; using data set 1950-2022. WE: 52.5%

Have you worked with any of these models ever? I guarantee if you use another model it will have very similar numbers to what Stull is saying and not ESPN. Unless maybe I am missing something which is always possible.

Thats why Im asking...

   60. sunday silence (again) Posted: October 03, 2023 at 09:23 PM (#6143420)
thats an interesting example of the value of an OF assist. PHI up 3-0 already when Castellanos makes the second out at home. Changing the We by only 4%. So worth .4 runs. Not a whole lot, but then you dont often see plays at the plate in a 3 run deficit game.

If it was a 1-0 game in the 4th and that happened, change in WE is 12% so the value is worth 1.2 runs.

something or someone is off.

Crew a pitching and defense team and pitching at beginning and end kind of sucked

Longoria with several good plays.

Some bad baserunning which is death for a below average offense

And then the manager letting Turang hit with no out and bases loaded is just bizarre

Counsell has been a big asset for Crew but he f’d that up majorly

Right now my predictions for these series would have been 1 correct out of 4. (Phi being the only one I would have predicted to win) I'm glad Montgomery showed up, and am still hoping the Cardinals end up re-signing him, he's probably at the top of my list for what I think the Cardinals are willing to spend, although this game probably added a couple of mil to his average value.

a Josh Bell citing.

AFAIC no sighting yesterday was as weird as seeing Josh Donaldson in a Brewers uniform, and then seeing him get two hits!

Of course the next time up, in a clutch situation, he grounded into a DP and turned back into a pumpkin. At least he didn't pause in the batter's box while he was waiting for the ball to go over the fence.

Attendance figures for yesterday's games:

Philadelphia: 45,662
Milwaukee: 40,892
Minnesota: 38,450

Tampa Bay: 19,704

Ouch.

According to the Athletic, the Rays attendance is the lowest for a playoff game since 1919.
   83. Tony S Posted: October 04, 2023 at 12:13 PM (#6143481)

I said this in another thread, but the Rays' local TV ratings are quite good. It's not like there's no local *interest* in the team. This isn't Miami.

It's commonly cited that the Trop is just a major pain in the arse to get to/leave from for most metro residents, which helps explain their sucky attendance.

But if the new ballpark is going to be built in more or less the same place, how is this going to fix this issue?

Today's Probables:

3:08 PM TEX (Eovaldi) @ TB (Eflin), TEX leads 1-0
4:38 PM TOR (Berrios) @ MIN (Gray), MIN leads 1-0
7:08 PM ARI (Gallen) @ MIL (Peralta), ARI leads 1-0
8:08 PM MIA (Garrett) @ PHI (Nola), PHI leads 1-0

Yesterday's game times:
2:41
2:40
2:46
3:36 (Snakes & Brewers). Eleven walks in that game.

I don't think the Rays are ever going to score a run in the postseason.

I think it's time to tune into the Minnesota game. The Rays are as dead as their crowd.

The Mets were awarded a win for their suspended game against the Marlins, which was never completed. (At the time of stoppage, the Mets trailed, 2-1, but both Marlins runs scored during an incomplete inning.)

Officially, the Mets finished 75-87, the eighth-worst record in MLB.

Schneider doing a little over-managing in the MIN-TOR game. Berrios was rolling but Lewis draws a leadoff walk in the fourth with two lefties coming up and Jose gets pulled for Kikuchi. He filled the bases and then managed to escape with only two runs scoring. Berrios is seething on the bench.

In the Kim Ng thread, the article notes that attendance in Miami was up 28% this season, and 12% last season. Still quite a ways to go, but given the franchise history, that’s progress. I’ll be interested in seeing the attendance if they advance to the next round and get some home playoff games, although the carryover to next season will be more important.

This is what I don't understand. My impression is that plan for a downtown Tampa location---which makes all kinds of sense---was floated but didn't get any traction. I don't understand why the solution to having a crappy ballpark in a terribly inconvenient location is to build a less-crappy ballpark in the same terribly inconvenient location.

Look at Petco---right in the thick of things, in a similar type of area as downtown Tampa, and it's woven into the fabric of a neighborhood with businesses, hotels, condos, and civic institutions. It's *easy* to get to, and people can spontaneously go to a game without it being a major production. Same with Camden.

I keep hearing Brock Stewart as "Rod Stewart".

He has certainly given Twins fans a reason to believe.

Guerrero scalds one to CF, but thankfully for Twins fans, Taylor gets paid for his glove and not his bat. Tracks it down easily in the end.

OPS+ of 94 with 21 HR in 129 games is good for Babyface. To say nothing about his 4.000 OPS in the World Series. I await the retraction of your blasphemy.

Eh, I was basing that solely on his last AB he just had facing Romano; he looked terrible. I went the emotional, tiny sample size post. Those are always well received around these parts.
