World Series flip.

Not going to have a specific world series omnichatter? Seems a bit lazy.
   803. cardsfanboy Posted: October 27, 2023 at 09:48 PM (#6145758)
I will say that ultimately these are two of the teams I was hoping would be here, Arizona not so much, but definitely the Rangers. (I will always root for a team that never won it all unless they are playing the Cardinals)

Edit: Mind you there is probably nobody who I was rooting against this year(except maybe the Marlins as I have an irrational dislike of their team)

Sometimes you run across a name that you’ve never heard before, and have no idea of it’s origin, like Mantiply.
   806. Hey, you and Tommy Lasorda... I hate Tommy Lasorda Posted: October 27, 2023 at 10:58 PM (#6145763)
For 8 runs being scored, this game feels like there has not been much action.
   807. PeteF3 Posted: October 28, 2023 at 01:00 AM (#6145767)
That is the 3rd consecutive World Series road game in which the Diamondbacks have surrendered a 2-run, game-tying HR in the 9th inning and gone on to lose in extras.
   808. sunday silence (again) Posted: October 28, 2023 at 03:47 AM (#6145770)
sure, but with the absence of any other teams in the state, they also represent the state of new york.

yeah its an interesting argument/take. We debated this on reddit. I was of the opinion that the Highlanders name referred to the upstate area around the Hudson but someone pointed out that they got that name from Hilltop Park and also the owner was named Gordon so the press referred to him as Gordon Highlander. So I dunno.

Have they changed the traditional WS schedule...you know, the one that didn't have a game on Monday because of the F word?
   810. ERROR---Jolly Old St. Nick Posted: October 28, 2023 at 10:13 AM (#6145775)
Last night was the 9th time that game 1 of the World Series ended in a walkoff. Two questions:

1. How many of the other 8 game 1 walkoffs can you name? Bonus points if you can name the players who drove in the winning run, and double bonus points if you can add what kind of a hit (or non-hit) these walkoff heroes had.

2. Of those 8 previous Series, what was the only one where the team that won game 1 in a walkoff went on to lose the Series?

Hint: 3 of the walkoffs (not including Garcia's) were home runs, 4 were singles, and 1 was a sacrifice fly.
   811. Booey Posted: October 28, 2023 at 10:22 AM (#6145776)
#810 - Kirk Gibson off of Eck in the 1988 World Series is the obvious one that came to mind.
   812. ERROR---Jolly Old St. Nick Posted: October 28, 2023 at 11:02 AM (#6145779)
Kirk's was the last walkoff HR before last night.
   813. Tulo's Fishy Mullet (mrams) Posted: October 28, 2023 at 11:16 AM (#6145780)
Fox long complained that it didn't want to start the WS on a Saturday night. of course it could end on a Saturday under this F-S, M, T, W, F, S format.
   814. JJ1986 Posted: October 28, 2023 at 11:51 AM (#6145783)
Game 1 in 2000 was a walkoff. Pretty sure it was a single (it wasn't a HR). I don't remember who it was, but I'll guess Posada.
   815. PeteF3 Posted: October 28, 2023 at 11:57 AM (#6145784)
Sac fly was 2015, Royals over the Mets.

I think 2000 was one of the singles. (This came to mind as I was running through them sequentially, and I admit I checked--yes, it was. Yankees legend Jose Vizcaino over the Mets.)

That and '88 cover all the G1 walk-offs of my lifetime, I think.

Oh, Dusty Rhodes in '54 is one of the HRs.
   816. ERROR---Jolly Old St. Nick Posted: October 28, 2023 at 12:01 PM (#6145785)
Right on all 4 counts. I'm 79 and was alive for all but 1 of them.
   817. It's regretful that PASTE was able to get out Posted: October 28, 2023 at 12:47 PM (#6145786)
I don't understand why anyone would ever throw a strike to Adolis Garcia, in any situation. Maybe if it's the bottom of the 9th+ and it's tied and the bases are loaded. But even then, you probably still should throw everything at least 8 inches outside the zone and bank on him hacking anyway.

Semianjust looks lost…. Texas really needs him to get going.

Texas really needs to glue his ass to the bench, or if they absolutely insist on playing him, bat him 8th or 9th. He's killing them.
   818. The Duke Posted: October 28, 2023 at 04:47 PM (#6145798)
Read another article on MLB finances talking about how they try to stay away from scheduling on Sundays in deference to how popular the NFL is. How has it come to this that MLB is scared of the NFL? When did that happen? Must be a relatively recent occurrence

There was also a note on the two teams that had their programming go from Bally to MLB. They said MLB guaranteed 2023 tv revenue would be no worse than 80% of Bally but that this guarantee didn't apply to 2024. This implies that switching out from Bally is costing teams - 20%+ haircut. That's not surprising but interesting

It's not a recent occurrence -- MLB has been losing ground to the NFL for decades -- but yes, MLB has largely put itself in this position. Can you imagine the AFC and NFC championship games being buried in TBS?

It takes some serious long-term marketing ineptitude to be reduced to scheduling your showcase event around another league's regular-season games.
   820. The Duke Posted: October 28, 2023 at 06:18 PM (#6145803)
Honestly, the refusal to show games on free tv is maddening. At least put it on MLBtv so that people with subscriptions - who are your core fans - can see it

The whole remaking of baseballs structure into a baseball version of the NFL has been so destructive. Maybe they are reaping some short term rewards but the sport is descending into obscurity to be passed by MLS soon enough.

At least they shortened the games this year

   821. Bote Man Posted: October 28, 2023 at 07:27 PM (#6145809)

They sold off MLBAM for a one-time payout, killing the goose that lays the golden eggs. Their middle name is "Short-Term". Their other middle name is "Short-Sighted".

Weird but true:

This is the Texas Rangers' first ever World Series game at Globe Life Field.

This is Corey Seager's 7th World Series game at Globe Life Field and his 3rd career World Series home run at Globe Life Field.

This is a huge Game for Monty. He's playing for huge money. A couple more good showings in game 2 and 5/6 and he'll mint money this offseason

Pham should have made second more easily on that one.

Edit: and that's the rock of the game so far.

per Jeff Passan:
Both Adolis Garcia and Max Scherzer have been removed from the Texas Rangers’ roster due to injuries. They are out for the remainder of the World Series. Utilityman Ezequiel Duran and left-handed reliever Brock Burke will replace them.
   833. Howie Menckel Posted: October 31, 2023 at 07:51 PM (#6146098)
I think I previously have been successful in avoiding the vapid nonsense of Smoltz and his generic TV partner, but...

3-1 game, 9th inning.
1-0 count, borderline pitch. Smoltz and pal can't believe it's called a ball.

3-1 pitch, ball was so far outside that batter would have needed a rower's oar to get to it.

STREEEEE-RIKE!

so instead of the proper leadoff man on, tying run at the plate, the AB continues and there's a groundout and the Rangers win the game 3-1, with 2 more outs.

Smoltz concedes that the 5th pitch was a terrible call. but he also claims that:
a) the second pitch call was just as bad
b) a 1-0 pitch missed is just as crucial as a 3-1 pitch missed
c) it's unfortunate that people may forget about the bad call on the second pitch.

just to make sure I haven't lost my faculties, I put the game in reverse to re-watch the latter pitch.
it's right on the borderline. probably hit the catcher's mitt an inch low, but it was moving.

kudos for that Smoltz Trifecta Of Stupidity !

Adolis Garcia and Max Scherzer >>> Utilityman Ezequiel Duran and left-handed reliever Brock Burke.

That sees like quite the drop off....

Rangers up 1-0 on a wild pitch.

And Seager doing Seager things. I must admit, not many of us here were too positive when they give him the big contract due to his ability to stay healthy, but holy cow when he plays he absolutely rakes.
   837. Tom Nawrocki Posted: October 31, 2023 at 09:11 PM (#6146115)
And now I'm stuck in the house for the rest of the evening to hand out candy, and there's a totally non-competitive game on. Thanks for nothing, Diamondbacks.
   838. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: October 31, 2023 at 09:14 PM (#6146116)
Well that went downhill fast for the Snakes. This one is done. We'll see if Texas can wrap it up tomorrow...
   839. Howie Menckel Posted: October 31, 2023 at 09:35 PM (#6146118)
DraftKings made a "Cash Out" offer on my doomed $10 "Diamondbacks win tonight" bet (that would have paid $10.23 if it won). At a 10-0 score, I took that 48 cents and ran with it !

833. With the score placed in graphic in every shot, I really don't need the announcers. But, I must point out that before Seager's HR in G1, the announcer was saying something like he can tie it with one swing, or jumping on the first pitch and sure enough, he did. I know a stopped clock is right a couple times a day, but I thought the timing was sensational.

Years ago, I think it was Monday Night Baseball and it had guest announcers, so one of them was Red Barber (Dizzy Dean was another, big hit). Barber gave an hourglass timer, I think to Cosell?, saying every time the sand runs out, I announce the score. The game speaks for itself, most of the time.
   844. Bote Man Posted: November 01, 2023 at 04:58 PM (#6146179)

Will Smith gets a third World Series ring in three years - 2021 Braves, 2022 Astros, 2023 Rangers.

forgettable 2-10, 102 ERA+ in 2022-2023 regular seasons, too.

so this seems like a slap in the face to those all-time greats who never even won one ring !

I'm a cable cutter, moved back to Pittsburgh five years ago, and so am blacked out of Pirate games, and so haven't bothered to get mlb.tv, as I did when I lived elsewhere. In my first four years here, I got Sling or some such in October, but just didn't bother this year because the competition's grown so distant. I did manage to catch some of the Series.

A stomach ailment has felled some 10% of the executives at MLB’s annual offseason kickoff. It’s serious enough that the league considered ending the whole thing early. The GM meetings have become the GI meetings.
