Edit: Mind you there is probably nobody who I was rooting against this year(except maybe the Marlins as I have an irrational dislike of their team)
yeah its an interesting argument/take. We debated this on reddit. I was of the opinion that the Highlanders name referred to the upstate area around the Hudson but someone pointed out that they got that name from Hilltop Park and also the owner was named Gordon so the press referred to him as Gordon Highlander. So I dunno.
1. How many of the other 8 game 1 walkoffs can you name? Bonus points if you can name the players who drove in the winning run, and double bonus points if you can add what kind of a hit (or non-hit) these walkoff heroes had.
2. Of those 8 previous Series, what was the only one where the team that won game 1 in a walkoff went on to lose the Series?
Hint: 3 of the walkoffs (not including Garcia's) were home runs, 4 were singles, and 1 was a sacrifice fly.
I think 2000 was one of the singles. (This came to mind as I was running through them sequentially, and I admit I checked--yes, it was. Yankees legend Jose Vizcaino over the Mets.)
That and '88 cover all the G1 walk-offs of my lifetime, I think.
Oh, Dusty Rhodes in '54 is one of the HRs.
Texas really needs to glue his ass to the bench, or if they absolutely insist on playing him, bat him 8th or 9th. He's killing them.
There was also a note on the two teams that had their programming go from Bally to MLB. They said MLB guaranteed 2023 tv revenue would be no worse than 80% of Bally but that this guarantee didn't apply to 2024. This implies that switching out from Bally is costing teams - 20%+ haircut. That's not surprising but interesting
It's not a recent occurrence -- MLB has been losing ground to the NFL for decades -- but yes, MLB has largely put itself in this position. Can you imagine the AFC and NFC championship games being buried in TBS?
It takes some serious long-term marketing ineptitude to be reduced to scheduling your showcase event around another league's regular-season games.
The whole remaking of baseballs structure into a baseball version of the NFL has been so destructive. Maybe they are reaping some short term rewards but the sport is descending into obscurity to be passed by MLS soon enough.
At least they shortened the games this year
They sold off MLBAM for a one-time payout, killing the goose that lays the golden eggs. Their middle name is "Short-Term". Their other middle name is "Short-Sighted".

Weird but true:
This is the Texas Rangers' first ever World Series game at Globe Life Field.
This is Corey Seager's 7th World Series game at Globe Life Field and his 3rd career World Series home run at Globe Life Field.
Edit: and that's the rock of the game so far.
Well, it worked out. :)
3-1 game, 9th inning.
1-0 count, borderline pitch. Smoltz and pal can't believe it's called a ball.
3-1 pitch, ball was so far outside that batter would have needed a rower's oar to get to it.
STREEEEE-RIKE!
so instead of the proper leadoff man on, tying run at the plate, the AB continues and there's a groundout and the Rangers win the game 3-1, with 2 more outs.
Smoltz concedes that the 5th pitch was a terrible call. but he also claims that:
a) the second pitch call was just as bad
b) a 1-0 pitch missed is just as crucial as a 3-1 pitch missed
c) it's unfortunate that people may forget about the bad call on the second pitch.
just to make sure I haven't lost my faculties, I put the game in reverse to re-watch the latter pitch.
it's right on the borderline. probably hit the catcher's mitt an inch low, but it was moving.
kudos for that Smoltz Trifecta Of Stupidity !
That sees like quite the drop off....
Rangers up 1-0 on a wild pitch.
The quality of mercy is not strained;
It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven
Upon the place beneath. It is twice blest;
It blesseth him that gives and him that takes.
All ten runs scored with two outs. So close, and yet so far.
Years ago, I think it was Monday Night Baseball and it had guest announcers, so one of them was Red Barber (Dizzy Dean was another, big hit). Barber gave an hourglass timer, I think to Cosell?, saying every time the sand runs out, I announce the score. The game speaks for itself, most of the time.
That must be where Jon Miller derived that trick.
I read this in the same cadence as Norm MacDonald's, "You guessed it, Frank Stallone."
Or so the Germans would have us believe.
forgettable 2-10, 102 ERA+ in 2022-2023 regular seasons, too.
so this seems like a slap in the face to those all-time greats who never even won one ring !
I'm ready to go back to the teams with the two best records duking it out for the championship
Looks like NPB and KBO are both wrapping up this weekend?

A stomach ailment has felled some 10% of the executives at MLB’s annual offseason kickoff. It’s serious enough that the league considered ending the whole thing early. The GM meetings have become the GI meetings.

Update: It’s definitely a virus, not food poisoning, and as a result MLB has canceled the rest of the meetings.
