Covid update: PHI@TOR Phillies have placed four players on the restricted list 12Jul for not being vaccinated against covid, and not permitted easy travel to Canada. 3B Alec Bohm, C J.T. Realmuto, RHP Kyle Gibson, RHP Aaron Nola.
Replacements so far are minor leaguers RHP Nick Duron and C Rafael Marchan. Also new to the team is LHP Sam Clay, claimed off waivers 10Jul from NYM.

Whiney Herzog was ######## about the Cardinals, saying that if the Cardinals didn't win the division outright, everyone involved with the team should be fired. He argues that it's a good team. Which I agree with that part, but not the first, if healthy, I don't think there is a team other than the Dodgers that is better than the Cardinals in the NL. But when your team is forced to use utility players at defensive positions or you are moving a corner fielder to center because of injuries, and of course 40% of your starting rotation has been absent this year, you imagine it's possible that the team may not be playing to their potential for reasons other than management.

Wow, bb-ref doesn't like the Brewers odds at all for the post season.... I just looked and they are giving them a 49% chance, vs 99 for the Dodgers and Mets, 97 for Braves, 81 for the Cardinals and 70 for the Phillies and Padres. I think they are over penalizing the easier schedule that they have had so far.

Yankees delayed start due to rain about to get underway, but Judge not in line-up, after a day off yesterday. Maybe a nagging injury they don’t want to discuss (or worse?), but is that OK with MLB’s official gaming partners? Or do they already get non-public injury info?
   5. cardsfanboy Posted: July 12, 2022 at 08:23 PM (#6086421)
Albert practicing his homerun derby swing, 1-0 Cardinals.
   6. cardsfanboy Posted: July 12, 2022 at 09:19 PM (#6086426)
Cardinals have one of the better bullpens in baseball, and I'm sure I'm going to be jinxing them as they have a 5-1 lead against one of the two best teams in baseball.
   7. Tom Nawrocki Posted: July 12, 2022 at 09:31 PM (#6086427)
Ha-Seong Kim of the Padres has two doubles in the his first two at-bats against the Rockies' Austin Gomber tonight. He's faced Gomber eight times in his career now and has hit five doubles.
   8. cardsfanboy Posted: July 12, 2022 at 10:14 PM (#6086434)
Cardinals seem to be going out of their way to lose this game, catchers interference to leadoff an inning? It's Trea Turner, he doesn't need any help.
   9. cardsfanboy Posted: July 12, 2022 at 10:16 PM (#6086435)
Somehow the Cardinals have turned a 6-1 lead into a 6-5 lead, with 0 outs men on second and third in the 7th inning....
   10. cardsfanboy Posted: July 12, 2022 at 10:31 PM (#6086437)
And the Cardinals managed to get out of that situation... second and third no outs and the best team in baseball can't score a run...while dealing with the lower tier relievers of the Cardinals... have to enjoy that.
   11. cardsfanboy Posted: July 12, 2022 at 10:45 PM (#6086442)
higher tier relievers into the game, but Halsey hasn't been quite as lights out as he was for the first 30 or so innings of the season.
   12. cardsfanboy Posted: July 12, 2022 at 10:53 PM (#6086444)
It feels like the Cardinals bench has shown up the last couple of games... Nootbar, Pujols, Gorman, Dickerson etc... it may not be something to count going forward, but with the number of missing players any hope is good hope.
   13. cardsfanboy Posted: July 12, 2022 at 10:58 PM (#6086447)
Cardinals spreading the gap after that disaster three innings of Dodgers comeback to make it 7-5....
   14. cardsfanboy Posted: July 12, 2022 at 11:05 PM (#6086448)
#### Freddie Freeman.
   15. cardsfanboy Posted: July 12, 2022 at 11:08 PM (#6086449)
I'm not watching the Cardinal game live, just gameday, and that 4th pitch from Gallegos to Will Smith is insane.
   16. cardsfanboy Posted: July 12, 2022 at 11:13 PM (#6086450)
I'm guessing nobody else is watching their team play today... Astros with 3-1 lead over the Angels, Rockies socking it to the Padres 5-1.... I get Yankee fans have already assumed they were going to beat the reds... even though it's the top of the ninth, bases loaded with two outs and a one run game.
   17. cardsfanboy Posted: July 12, 2022 at 11:15 PM (#6086451)
oops, Reds (who I consider to be the greatest come from behind late inning team in the past decade or so) just took the lead with an India single.
   18. cardsfanboy Posted: July 12, 2022 at 11:17 PM (#6086452)
And Yea... the Cardinals win, a game that shouldn't have been as close as it was, but we'll take the victory against the best team (or second) in baseball)

I'm listening to the Rockies game on the radio... Socking it to them may be a little premature, since the Pads have two on with nobody out in the 8th.
   21. Tom Nawrocki Posted: July 12, 2022 at 11:24 PM (#6086456)
Heading into tonight, Jonathan India was hitting .176/.250/.297 in 24 games since coming off the IL, so I'm wondering if he's totally healthy. Nice to see him get healthy against the Yanks.

As a person who identifies with division, and knowing full and well that the Reds are a non-threat to my team... I'm absolutely rooting for them against any and everybody that doesn't have a Cardinal on their jersey. Add in that I like India... and more power to him/them. I hate sophomore slumps, hopefully he rebounds.
   23. cardsfanboy Posted: July 12, 2022 at 11:31 PM (#6086458)
Winner, winner, chicken dinner for the reds, what other games do we have left?
   24. cardsfanboy Posted: July 12, 2022 at 11:33 PM (#6086459)
Evil Milwaukee is looking safe against Min... nobody on the planet including in the two cities care about Oak/Tex game, Laa/Hou are interesting (SF is up 8-0 against Arizona so nobody is caring at this point on that game)
   25. Tom Nawrocki Posted: July 12, 2022 at 11:33 PM (#6086460)
Clay Holmes gave up twice as many runs tonight as he had in the entire rest of the season.
   26. cardsfanboy Posted: July 12, 2022 at 11:36 PM (#6086461)
In the Angels game, Trout has already been removed.... Not a good sign for this game nor for the team going forward... no idea why he was removed.
   27. cardsfanboy Posted: July 12, 2022 at 11:37 PM (#6086462)
...just because it shows my ignorance... who the #### is clay holmes? (and yes by the time anyone can reply to this comment, I'll have bb-ref him)
   28. Tom Nawrocki Posted: July 12, 2022 at 11:39 PM (#6086463)
The Rockies escape with a 5-3 lead after eight. It could have been worse, but the Padres had two runners thrown out at third in the inning, including one trying to steal with two outs.
   29. cardsfanboy Posted: July 12, 2022 at 11:41 PM (#6086464)
Anyone know why Trout left the game early?
   30. cardsfanboy Posted: July 12, 2022 at 11:51 PM (#6086465)
I'm focused more on the Mil/Min game, but I have zero confidence that the Twins can come back from a 6-3 deficit....
   31. cardsfanboy Posted: July 12, 2022 at 11:53 PM (#6086466)
Buxton just made an out, and the remaining at bats for the twins sounds like a Star Trek list of characters Celestino, Polanco(okay that is a human name) Krillof, Garlick and Urshela.... I'm not sure that Klingons know how to play baseball to be honest.
   32. Tom Nawrocki Posted: July 12, 2022 at 11:54 PM (#6086467)
Non-All-Star Daniel Bard closes out the Padres 1-2-3 in the ninth for his 19th save, Rox win 5-3.
   33. Tom Nawrocki Posted: July 13, 2022 at 12:00 AM (#6086469)
The Rockies were without CJ Cron (still hurting from getting hit in the hand with a pitch the other day), Kris Bryant (paternity list) and Brendan Rodgers (apparently a scheduled day off). I'm amazed they scored as many as five runs.
   34. cardsfanboy Posted: July 13, 2022 at 12:06 AM (#6086470)
I'm going to bed, hope the Twins come back and win, don't really think they will.
   35. salvomania Posted: July 13, 2022 at 03:03 PM (#6086527)
I don't understand modern baseball.

Twin's Joe Ryan is cruising through 5 (1 run on 2 hits), at 70-some pitches, and gets the leadoff batter to start the sixth... and then is pulled.

Does he not go a third time through the lineup? Well, he already got the first two guys out three times, and was yanked before he could face the next guy.

EDIT: Just looked it up, and third time through batters are hitting .225/.269/.388 off him, which is better than the second time through. He's faced 31 batters in the 6th-7th innings this year, and those batters are 2-for-29, with two walks.

He must be hurt or removed for precautionary reasons I guess.

   36. salvomania Posted: July 13, 2022 at 03:28 PM (#6086531)
Since June 30, Byron Buxton is 4-for-46, with 3 homers, along with 18 Ks.

The homers are nice, but lately he's a huge black hole at the top of the lineup.
   37. Tom Nawrocki Posted: July 13, 2022 at 04:06 PM (#6086540)
Kris Bryant and his wife went off-brand, welcoming twins (but not Twins) yesterday.
   38. The Yankee Clapper Posted: July 13, 2022 at 05:52 PM (#6086563)
Royals place 40% of the roster on Restricted List for series @ Toronto. Might be a disadvantage.
   39. salvomania Posted: July 13, 2022 at 07:38 PM (#6086578)
Reds with back-to-back-to-back homers from their 7-8-9 hitters off Severino; they're up 4-0 on the Yankees in the 2nd inning.
   40. cardsfanboy Posted: July 13, 2022 at 07:54 PM (#6086583)

They fire their manager on the day that he's very likely to start a three game sweep.

Go Reds.... I know they are in our division and all, but they aren't competitive and I'm just never going to be a fan of the Yankees or Dodgers out of pure spitefulness. (I actually don't dislike them, but I'm never going to root for them, unless it's against a divisional competitor in July/August/September. I'm honest about my rooting interest....generally it goes whatever is best for the Cardinals, any pitcher throwing a no-hitter or shutout, anyone facing an Al East team, anyone facing the Mets, and then it's mostly team specific after that. A's, Padres, Angels I root for, while Mariners or Blue Jays I don't have any care type of thing.)
   42. cardsfanboy Posted: July 13, 2022 at 08:15 PM (#6086587)
Cardinals lose Angel Rondón to the Giants, I think the Giants made a good pickup.
   43. cardsfanboy Posted: July 13, 2022 at 08:30 PM (#6086589)
Knizner doing a great job of framing today, already has gotten two called strikeouts that probably shouldn't have happened.
   44. cardsfanboy Posted: July 13, 2022 at 08:43 PM (#6086592)
Gameday says that Nootbar ground out to third baseman Max Muncy, while the tv broadcast said it was trea turner.... Drawback about the shift. I went frame by frame to figure out which was accurate since it was hit on the second base side of the infield and it was uniform number 13... Max Muncy.... I doubt the announcers fix that.
   45. cardsfanboy Posted: July 13, 2022 at 08:53 PM (#6086595)
I know it's a broken record at this point in the season, but Goldy delivers for the Cardinals. 2-0 Cardinals in the bottom of the third.
   46. cardsfanboy Posted: July 13, 2022 at 08:55 PM (#6086598)
Nolan with a hr, 4-0 Cardinals against a guy who started the game with a 230+ era+.
   47. cardsfanboy Posted: July 13, 2022 at 09:12 PM (#6086600)
Dylan Carlson is not Bader in the outfield, but it's hard for me to accept that he's a -4 defender after what he's done defensively the past week or two.
   48. cardsfanboy Posted: July 13, 2022 at 09:22 PM (#6086601)
To give you an idea how bad the Cardinals main players have played lately, according to the announcers, Edmans run scored in the last inning was the first run he scored in the month of July, Goldy's rbi, was his first rbi in the month of July.... These are 4.0 war players for the Cardinals, they just haven't been doing the clutch job this month.
   49. The Yankee Clapper Posted: July 13, 2022 at 09:35 PM (#6086602)
Juan Soto had 3 BB & a 3-run HR in the afternoon game of today’s doubleheader, and a solo HR (#19) in the nightcap, although neither effort resulted in a Nationals win. Soto leads MLB with 76 BB, Max Muncy is 2nd with 53.

That gives Soto 449 BB for his career, and he’s rapidly moving up the Age-23 Leaderboard:

1. Ted Williams 495 BB (2615 PA)
2. Mel Ott 462 BB (3317 PA)
3. Juan Soto 449 BB (2379 PA)

At his current pace, and barring injury, Soto should pass Ott this month, and Willliams in September. Pretty good company.
   50. cardsfanboy Posted: July 13, 2022 at 09:46 PM (#6086604)
Waino at 102 pitches for the night, going into the 6th inning, definitely not complete game option, but hopefully a quality start option, 2 hbp, 3 walks 3 hits, 5 strikeouts, 0 runs.... Still managed to get his era to 3.01 right now, and if he completes this inning without a run, his era will drop below 3.00, not bad for a guy 40 years old.
   51. Tom Nawrocki Posted: July 13, 2022 at 09:56 PM (#6086608)
Reds with back-to-back-to-back homers from their 7-8-9 hitters off Severino; they're up 4-0 on the Yankees in the 2nd inning.

MLB.com says Severino left that game with "shoulder tightness." I still think the problem for that Yankees rotation is not that they're going to start pitching badly but that they're all going to get hurt.
   52. Walt Davis Posted: July 13, 2022 at 09:57 PM (#6086609)
Coming up soon ... Top Gun cap giveaway at Wrigley. I wonder if Terri Nunn will sing "Take Me Out to the Ballgame."

Somebody snuck this weekly chatter on me. No objections but a text would have been nice. :-)

Coming up soon ... Top Gun cap giveaway to Wrigley.

Cardinals are doing armed forces cap giveaway, and I looked at the caps and I can't figure out which forces which cap represent. Sadly I think the USMC and Army cap are exactly the same, ugly ass green ones, while the Airforce is probably the cool one that is red white and blue. l

Albert with a single, and is looking much better right now than he did about 10 days ago, he is showing an ability to recognize pitches that I think had disappeared the previous 3 or so years.
   54. cardsfanboy Posted: July 13, 2022 at 10:02 PM (#6086611)
Is Bellinger supposedly a good defender? If so he hasn't been one this series.

Surely my 10/5 veto rights have kicked in by now!

Sorry, I would have told you if I had your email.

I like having a weekly chatter over a daily chatter as I think it leads to longer conversations, so I'm going to continue to support them as much as possible. (actually I like how it had evolved into weekday/weekend chatter so it's long enough for a story or two, but it creates a natural break, except in situations like this weekend where the Cardinals had a four game series with Philly ending on Monday)
   57. cardsfanboy Posted: July 13, 2022 at 10:27 PM (#6086617)
Looking at gameday and comparing it to the actual video and the words don't really match... Gameday "Arenado flies out sharply to centerfielder Cody Bellinger"... the reality is that Arenado hit a medium high fly ball to the warning track that Bellinger caught.

To me sharply implies line drive and more often than not a catch in which the centerfielder is going left, right or forward, not back. (or at least not back a lot)
   58. Hombre Brotani Posted: July 13, 2022 at 10:33 PM (#6086618)
Ohtani with a 2-run triple. He's pitching tonight (2 IP, 0 runs, 4 Ks). Freak.

Ohtani with a 2-run triple. He's pitching tonight (2 IP, 0 runs, 4 Ks). Freak.

I didn't know it was his pitching night. But yes he's a freak... I think that is part of his appeal... :)
   60. cardsfanboy Posted: July 13, 2022 at 10:40 PM (#6086623)
Muncy with a .161 average, 0 for 0 today... 4 walks.... how in the #### do you not pitch to this guy?
   61. cardsfanboy Posted: July 13, 2022 at 10:43 PM (#6086624)
Cardinals really are trying to hurt their run differential by letting the Dodgers come back. 6-3 Cardinals in the 8th inning, men on second and third, two outs.... and Turner now makes it a 6-5 game.

Freeman who is 3 for 3 is up to bat...(7 for 8 in the series)
   62. cardsfanboy Posted: July 13, 2022 at 10:52 PM (#6086626)
jeez, this team just doesn't want to win games. Fernandez is having issues and apparently none of the good relievers are available.
   63. cardsfanboy Posted: July 13, 2022 at 10:54 PM (#6086627)
6-5 going to the bottom of the 8th... Cardinals available relievers is realistic Oviedo, McFarland and maybe Gallegos? (according to the announcers)
   64. The Yankee Clapper Posted: July 13, 2022 at 11:06 PM (#6086629)
Two WPs allow birthday boy ghost runner LeMahieu to score in 10th, giving Yankees a 7-6 win over the pesky Reds.
   65. Srul Itza Posted: July 13, 2022 at 11:06 PM (#6086630)
And the Yankees win in the bottom of the 10th -- on back-to-back wild pitches.

I guess catcher's interference was getting stale . . .
   66. cardsfanboy Posted: July 13, 2022 at 11:19 PM (#6086632)
Cardinals completely f this game up.... tied game man on third one out bottom of the 9th.
   67. cardsfanboy Posted: July 13, 2022 at 11:25 PM (#6086634)
And the Dodgers complete the comeback 7-6 after being down 6-0 as of the 7th inning.
   68. cardsfanboy Posted: July 13, 2022 at 11:33 PM (#6086635)
and it's finished.... #### what a piss poor finish.
   69. Sleepy was just looking for porta potties Posted: July 13, 2022 at 11:36 PM (#6086636)
Well that sucked. Cards didn’t even put up a fight in the bottom of the ninth.
   70. Tom Nawrocki Posted: July 13, 2022 at 11:47 PM (#6086637)
Jose Iglesias, of all people, hits a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to pull the Rockies even with the Padres 6-6.
   71. Walt Davis Posted: July 13, 2022 at 11:53 PM (#6086638)
In far more important (yet belated) news, O's 7-1 over the Cubs, moving the O's and the entire ALE over 500. The Cubs cling to a 1 game edge on Cinci thanks to LeMahieu's birthday present.
   72. Walt Davis Posted: July 13, 2022 at 11:59 PM (#6086639)
The ALE is 58-44 vs ALC, 68-39 vs ALW and 33-21 vs the NL (mostly NLC). That's 159-104 overall, a 605 %age -- one division against the rest of baseball. The Yanks are 34-12 (739).
   73. Hombre Brotani Posted: July 14, 2022 at 12:12 AM (#6086641)
Ohtani's probably done for the night on the mound. 6 IP, 1 run, 4 hits, 12 Ks.

Over his last 6 starts: 39.2 IP, 20 hits, 10 walks, 58 Ks, 2 earned runs. 0.45 ERA.
   74. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: July 14, 2022 at 12:18 AM (#6086642)
Since the pandemic I’ve gotten back into collecting baseball cards. I buy pretty much exclusively vintage Hall of Famers, but a few weeks ago I picked up an Ohtani rookie, just because he’s so absurdly good. There are a lot of great players now, of course - but only one would have been inconceivable, or at least incomprehensible, a generation ago.
   75. Tom Nawrocki Posted: July 14, 2022 at 12:25 AM (#6086643)
The Rockies come back from down 3-0 and 6-3 to beat the Padres 10-6, thanks in large part to Jose Iglesias' six RBIs.
   76. Hombre Brotani Posted: July 14, 2022 at 12:39 AM (#6086644)
Alden González
@Alden_Gonzalez
Shohei Ohtani over these last 34 days ...

Pitching: 0.45 ERA, 58 SO, 11 BB, 39 2/3 IP
Hitting: .287/.393/.604, 8 HR, 29 G
This has been going on for a year and a half now, and I still don't believe it.
   77. Sleepy was just looking for porta potties Posted: July 14, 2022 at 01:22 AM (#6086648)
It only really makes sense if you consider that the angels are 11-23 in their last 34 games. Maybe 12-22 after today.
   78. Hombre Brotani Posted: July 14, 2022 at 04:25 AM (#6086652)
In their last 7 games, the Angels are 2-0 when Shohei pitches, 0-5 when Shohei doesn't.

July 29th, 2012 Of course the same division. (edit: oops didn't realize that the Red Sox were exactly .500, I was going by the Blue Jays and didn't realize that they were about to flip in the standings)

In-game reporting: TOR OF George Springer is selected to the All-Star Game next week, but will not play. Balky right elbow.

Covid update: I didn't post one today, because info was posted here yday (check Hot Topics) based on leaks before the transactions were posted.
The Royals put 10 players on the restricted list for not being vaccinated against covid, and therefore unable to easily travel to Canada for KC@TOR.
10 players (and 3 coaches) is by far the largest number of people impacted by the mandates this season.

Cardinals behind 4-0 against the Dodgers in the 7th, unlike yesterday when the Dodgers were losing 6-0 in the 7th, this does feel like the game is over.

Judge line drive solo HR (#31) to back of Yankee bullpen (435 feet), and Gleyber Torres 2-run shot (#14) tie the peksy Reds in 8th, 4-4.

at least the Cardinals are making Muncy swing the bat.

just learned that the Cardinals will play their next 7 games against the Reds (but there's the All-Star break in the middle, at least), and that they close the season with 6 straight games against the Pirates.

the Cardinals have done this before - but it was 111 years ago.

apparently it's due to scrambling the schedule to get in the 162 games, so lots of plans went out the window.

With the Cubs' lifeless loss and the Reds' topsy-turvy win, they are tied for last in the NLC.

Stanton’s 3-run HR (#24) to RF (398 feet) puts the Yankees up 3-2 over the Red Sox after 3 innings. Doubt that will be the final score.

Montgomery now 15 ER in his last 27.3 IP over his last 5 starts for NYY, thru 4 IP tonight.

Cardinals/Reds not starting out as a pitchers duel... 3-2 in the second inning.
   94. cardsfanboy Posted: July 15, 2022 at 09:48 PM (#6086862)
Cardinals take a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the 4th. Watching the Cardinals lately, that is probably the last run that is scored for them, and knowing the Reds vs Cardinals, the Reds will score two in the top of the ninth.

Rockies and Pirates are on Apple TV tonight, which is undoubtedly a huge draw for them. I'm not watching, but the Rox are up 6-1 thanks to a Brendan Rodgers three-run double.

Aaron F'n Boone ties the game with several F-bombs. Statcast says the first one had an exit volume of 70 decibels.

Torres infield single to 3rd, Carpenter HPB, and IKF bad bunt thrown past 3rd by Houck ties the game, 4-4 in 9th, but Yankees squander opportunity for more. On to extras.

This Cardinal game feels like it's moving real slow. I was gamedaying it because I had other things that I was doing, but it's only the 6th inning right now, it's to the point to actually watch the game as I'm done with my other bs. (I was kinda hoping to be thinking about going to bed, but even though it's a home game, it seems to be on west coast time.)

Great to be wrong, Cardinals score another run 5-3...I think we are 2 hours and 30 minutes into this game, and we are in the bottom of the 6th.

Update on the minor-leauger's min wage and overtime laswuit (settled in May as the article reminds us): ESPN article.

$65 M to the lawyers -- nice work if you can get it.

EDIT: d'oh! Already posted for a thread of its own.
