Welp. Selling time for the Red Sox. Not sure they’ll get anything useful for X, JD, or Eovaldi, but maybe the salary relief could go to the Devers extension. :/

This has been one heck of a year. If it wasn’t for good teams, the Red Sox would be a good team.

Jose Trevino, running well for a catcher, scores from 1st on LeMahieu’s double to the new wall in LF at Camden Yards. 1-0 Yankees.

EDIT: Judge gavels a 456 foot HR (#37) over that still not deep enough LF wall. 3-0.

Just noticed that the Orioles have added a mostly-white advertising sign to the CF batters eye, which used to be a solid green. With the Orioles now batting, it appears to be a different advertisement with darker mostly-blue colors. Is that legal? Or maybe it’s just a digital insert only visible on the TV broadcast?

I've watched more of today's game than I did of either Friday's or yesterday's, but the ineptness of the Red Sox fielders seems to be a common theme, especially today's 5th inning.
   105. Captain Joe Bivens, Pointless and Wonderful Posted: July 24, 2022 at 03:27 PM (#6088089)
They will be in last place after today's game.
   106. Walt Davis Posted: July 24, 2022 at 03:53 PM (#6088093)
By the way, just visited mlb.com and it seems like every(?) game today is free on mlbtv -- blackouts apply of course and I assume not the ESPN game.
   107. salvomania Posted: July 24, 2022 at 03:54 PM (#6088094)
Cards about to drop 2 of 3 to the last-place Reds, as they kick off MLB's easiest second-half schedule.
   108. Walt Davis Posted: July 24, 2022 at 04:02 PM (#6088095)
The unvaxxed all-stars

C: Realmuto
1B: Goldschmidt
2B: Merrifield
SS:
3B: Arenado
OF: Kepler, Benintendi, Santander, Taylor
SP: Ray, Mahle, Cease, Nola, Gibson
RP: Houck, Graveman, Puk, anonymous

Is it because so many SS's are from Latin countries and had to get vaxxed to get into the US or is SS the smartest position in the game?
   109. The Duke Posted: July 24, 2022 at 04:03 PM (#6088096)
Albert Pujols just moved into a tie (Musial and Murray) for 6th place for MLB, games played (career ). He will likely pass Ty Cobb soon for his final resting place of 5th on that stat. Any guesses on who has the top four places ?
   110. NaOH Posted: July 24, 2022 at 04:13 PM (#6088097)
I'd guess Aaron and Rose are two of the four.
   111. The Duke Posted: July 24, 2022 at 04:14 PM (#6088098)
Correct on the first two
   112. Captain Joe Bivens, Pointless and Wonderful Posted: July 24, 2022 at 04:18 PM (#6088099)
Yaz?
   113. mathesond Posted: July 24, 2022 at 04:31 PM (#6088100)
I wondered if Mays might be one, but bbref tells me he's 21 games behind Musial
   114. Walt Davis Posted: July 24, 2022 at 04:42 PM (#6088101)
Ripken maybe?
   115. Walt Davis Posted: July 24, 2022 at 04:43 PM (#6088102)
Duh, shoulda thought of the guy in #4.
   116. Walt Davis Posted: July 24, 2022 at 04:46 PM (#6088103)
While Ripken is 10th in games, he is 6th in PAs. Albert will pass him with 15 more PAs but needs 235 to catch Cobb -- he won't get that many unless the Cards can't get out of Canada.
   117. TomH Posted: July 24, 2022 at 04:48 PM (#6088104)
Rickey thinks Rickey is on that list
   118. The Duke Posted: July 24, 2022 at 04:48 PM (#6088105)
Yaz is correct

Mays, and Ripken no

One to go
   119. TomH Posted: July 24, 2022 at 04:48 PM (#6088106)
I just now noticed that as of this morning, for the first time in a while this season, the Yankees do NOT have the best team wpct in MLB.
   120. The Duke Posted: July 24, 2022 at 04:48 PM (#6088107)
Rickey is number 4

Well done all
   121. TomH Posted: July 24, 2022 at 04:51 PM (#6088108)
The LA Dodgers have decent leads in the NL in both most runs scored and fewest runs allowed.

If they finish the season leading in both, it will be for the FIFTH YEAR IN A ROW. That to me is a stunning record. It is unprecedented. No other team in the past 80 years has even led in both for 3 years in a row. Only the 1970-71 Orioles have even done it back to back since expansion.
   122. Walt Davis Posted: July 24, 2022 at 04:58 PM (#6088109)
The most games all-stars (not necessarily at that posiion!)

OF: Rose, Yaz, Aaron (yeah, there's no CF, you could plug in #4 or #5 there)
C: Rodriguez
1B: Pujols
2B: Biggio
SS: Ripken
3B: Beltre (actually passed Brooks)
DH: Baines :-)
   123. Walt Davis Posted: July 24, 2022 at 05:00 PM (#6088110)
If they finish the season leading in both, it will be for the FIFTH YEAR IN A ROW.

That is amazing yet they remain COMPLETE TOTAL LOSERS since they've won only one WS in that time and even that was in the fake season of 2020.
   124. The Duke Posted: July 24, 2022 at 05:15 PM (#6088112)
Matz makes triumphant return to cards rotation and blows his MCL fielding a dribbler and is now toast
   125. Walt Davis Posted: July 24, 2022 at 06:18 PM (#6088114)
Kershaw with a rough inning, bringing on Yency Almonte (ERA 1.37) leading to

the all-Y first name team ... controversially decided not to qualify Yogi

C: Yadi, Yasmani (Yan and Yorvit providing extra-depth here)
1B: Yonder, Yuli (if we include Cuba)
2B: Yoan, Yolmer, Yangervis
SS: Yunel, Yuniesky (if we get desperate)
3B: Yandy
OF: Yoenis, Yasiel, Yasmany, Yermin (won't somebody think of the poor pitchers!!)
SP: Yu, Yovani, Yordano, Yusei
RP: Yusmeiro (and many others)

EDIT: Who is/was our DBacks fan who hated Yasmany Tomas with the heat of a thousand suns?
EDIT2: Eek, I missed Yordan Alvarez. For some reason he didn't come up in a "YO" search
   126. salvomania Posted: July 24, 2022 at 06:31 PM (#6088115)
OF: Rose, Yaz, Aaron (yeah, there's no CF, you could plug in #4 or #5 there)

Musial > Yaz

EDIT: Unless Yaz automatically gets in because he's 2nd all time and Musial is 6th all time.
   127. Walt Davis Posted: July 24, 2022 at 06:53 PM (#6088116)
Yep, I was going strictly by games played. It's not particularly close -- Rose the only player over 3500 games, Yaz the only other one over 3300, Aaron the only other one over 3200 (and just 2 short of 3300). Aaron is 217 games ahead of Rickey in 4th. If we decide there needs to be a true CF, then we can discuss Cobb (3034) vs Mays (3005).
   128. salvomania Posted: July 24, 2022 at 07:29 PM (#6088117)
Down 11-1 to the Rangers, the A's start clawing back, scoring 4 in the 8th to make 11-5, then hit back-to-back-to-back homers in the 9th to make it now 11-8, with only one out...

EDIT: OK, three out

Angel Hernandez gets a call right.

amazing how sports announcers are incapable of digging out of a hole they dug for themselves.

Vogelbach on first, one out, grounder up middle nicely fielded by Kim - who for some reason goes to first base, allowing Moby to take second.

announcer raves about how smart a play it was [NARRATOR: It wasn't.]

Buster Olney - well, he just can't. so he says "I'll push back a little bit" on that inane comment.

announcer says, "well, it's about getting familiar with a player like Vogelbach - that takes time and experience."

um, Vogelbach doesn't look like Boog Powell - he looks like he ATE Boog Powell.

sure, maybe there's a 400-pound speedster Kim doesn't know about, but....

of course, the baseball gods are amused enough by all this nonsense to provide the obligatory Texas Leaguer that scores Vogelbach, who presumably is getting oxygen and glycogen in the dugout.

The Citi Field crowd seemed to enjoy watching their new fat guy run - probably reminded them of Bartolo Colon.

2 years ago the Blue Jays had both Vogelbach and Rowdy Tellez. Then they both went to the Brewers. Vog looks like someone started with Tellez and stomped on his head until he was 6 inches shorter.
