but is there a practical way for MLB to amend the rule? not sure
I don't know, but even though my team benefited from it, I hate that play. It just seems like a violation of fair play (or rules lawyering).

I think the practical answer is to use the 3 ft rule that they use for tag plays to apply to all defensive plays. On a tag play, you can't run more than 3ft outside the line. Why wouldn't the same apply here ? That gives the runner 6 ft to work with. Even if they applied this rule, I think Knizner os ok. What makes it dramatic is that he shifts 5ft very abruptly.

I was looking at the Rawlings gold glove SDI index on Rawlings site and it was interesting for a few insights:
1. The Yankees really seem to prioritize defense these days. The acquisitions of Benetendi, Donaldson, Trevino, Bader really highlight their goal to be a defense first team. Is that the general view of the Yankees fan?
2. They don't have site updated for "utility" player. So Edmans value at SS is completely missing
3. Hayes from Pittsburgh ranks higher than Arenado. I don't know how that could be possible. Arenado has been nothing short of spectacular
4. Rutchsman is already considered an elite catcher - is he the second coming of Johnny Bench?
5. What has happened to Machado and Wong ? I saw Wong make a terrible play the other night - I'm guessing his career is over because he's useless without the defense component.
6. The Padres made a good acquisition getting this Ha-Seong Kim a couple years ago for next to nothing

3. Hayes from Pittsburgh ranks higher than Arenado. I don't know how that could be possible. Arenado has been nothing short of spectacular
All season long Hayes has rated better, he's got some crazy good reaction time, I don't think he has the same heads up play making as Arenado, but I do think he ranges a bit better. (I'm talking the two steps to his right to make a diving play type of thing, not the running down a popup).
FWIW Wong had a terrible fielding slump the first two months of the season. Just awful. Maybe dealing with injury? Anyway, he's been himself the second half so agree with BBREF as a 2 win player this season
Brewhas likely to miss wild card and going 20-18 against Cubs and Pirates is all you need to know at to why. Both teams have already or will lose 90 odd games this season. .500 against that competition is not good enough
Alexander already at 72 pitches and his funky arm slot only works for so long. Craig got 8 innings from Woody last night so have to think others are ready.
Wong all over Cole's stuff. Homer and now a double.

Anyone see the Oneil Cruz 3-run homer off deGrom?
Curious if it was one of those 117 mph jobs.

So Cruz has played just under a half of the season (joined the team June 20, has started 72 of 82 team games since), and has 17 homers, 51 rbi, and an OPS+ of around 100, dragged down by a .268 OBP.
If he can get that OBP up to even .300-.310 next season, he'll be an absolute monster.
Suter legit breaks the bat but the slow grounder gets all the way to the outfield grass since nobody was on the right side. Run scores 5-4 Yanks. Between not throwing strikes and some bad luck this inning has the chance to be super ugly
Barves ready close out a sweep of the Phillies. Owned the Phils completely, not 18-3 style, but hitting better, fielding better and pitching better (much better).
8-4 Yankees. Adames whiffs on a grounder playing in but Crew gets a bit lucky that ricochet goes to Urias who doesn't #### it up which is also kind of a miracle. So they get an out but run scores from third
So effortless. Not trying to downplay the dinger. Just the opposite. It was a terrible pitch and he didn't overswing or do something stupid. Just a smooth swing and watch it go.
Living where I am I have seen a lot of West Coast games including Angels games. So even beyond the numbers there is just no comparison of Ohtani (who is great) to Judge. Judge is just so superior this season. Not interested in any MVP debate or whatever. Just a fan who isn't a follower of either team sharing that Judge is so easily the best player in the American League I find it legit weird this is even a discussion.

MLB record is 20, and at a 4-3 Mets lead, EDiaz - who literally whiffs half his batters - had a great chance to break the all-time mark in the 9th.
but Mets tack on 3 more in bottom of 8th to make it 7-3, so the trumpets were silenced in favor of Trevor May. still, Pirates batters do enjoy creating a breeze - so who knows....
fly out
ground out
single
K looking - Mets tie all-time record of 20 Ks as game ends; Jack Suwinski dons the Golden Sombrero that teammate Oneil Cruz wore yesterday.
Mets clinch a postseason berth if they don't get swept in Milwaukee (and even then......)

Brewers TV broadcaster, musing about Judge’s chances to win the Triple Crown, says he doesn’t think the Yankees ever had a Triple Crown winner. Then corrects himself to mention Gehrig, but still no mention of Mickey Mantle who won in 1956, when he lead all MLB, not just the AL, in all three categories.
Tellez with a dinger to make the score less gross. Rowdy just missed on a few earlier today or might have been a 3 dinger day which of course it's not. Still, guy has had a good season even with that batting average
Crew loads bases but Urias strikes out and Hiura grounds out so final is 12-8 NY

Current BA race:
Arraez .317
Bogaerts .316
Judge .316
We probably shouldn’t routinely go to 4 digits until the last series of the season, but the current spread is only .0005! Could go down to the final at bat of the final day for all 3, and maybe more if Abreu or Lowe pick it up a bit. Might be quite memorable.

Could judge actually get to 73 this year? He seems so locked in and the yanks are working hard to hold on to the bye so there is a sense of urgency to their games
Second unrelated question is what does this do to his salary demands?

Judge has to be pissed at a recent interview by Mets owner Cohen where Cohen said:
- he didn't see a need to spend a lot more on salaries than he already does; and
- he considers himself 1 of 30 partners
strong hint on both was: "I CAN spend as much as I want, but I won't."
so much for the second coming of Steinbrenner. oh well
also benefits Yankees greatly to know (know?) that Cohen won't offer 10 years, $550M or something insane - even though he could, obviously

The idea that Cohen would ignore the fundamental economics of the industry was pretty much a fantasy from the start. He’ll spend, but not ridiculously so. I doubt it will matter much to Judge, who is going to be very well-paid, most likely by the Yankees.

Could judge actually get to 73 this year?
That would require 14 HRs in the 16 remaining games, which would be quite amazing, although seemingly unlikely.
Second unrelated question is what does this do to his salary demands?
The Yankees will certainly have to significantly up their preseason $213.5M/7-year offer. Maybe 8-years for $280M? $300M?
It would be really fun to see Judge get 61 by game 154. I'm old enough to remember the "asterisk" days when publications listed the Maris record.
I was at a twi-night doubleheader in Baltimore that were the Yankees' (official**) 152nd and 153rd games. At that point Maris had hit 58. A friend of mine and I skipped school and took a bus up from Washington. We arrived at about 9:00 in the morning, expecting a long line, but it was raining and we just walked into Memorial Stadium without any problem. Never even had to buy a ticket. Yada yada yada Maris went 1 for 8 with a swinging bunt single, and when we tried to do the same thing the next day, my parents followed me to the bus and made sure I went to school.
Of course that night, in game #154, Maris hit #59 and barely missed #60, while the Yankees clinched the pennant. I kept score of the game over the radio on a News-American scorecard, and I still have it stashed away with all of its elaborate annotations. When he eventually got #60 and #61, it was great to see, but we didn't consider that he'd broken Ruth's record. As far as I was concerned, his most important home run that year was the one that won game 3 of the World Series, and the highlight of his career was his game saving throw that prevented the Giants from scoring the tying run in game 7 of the next year's Series. What makes Judge's run so extraordinary is that so many of his hits have come in the late innings of close games, with several walkoffs among them. What's also noticeable is that he seems to be having so much more fun in his pursuit than Maris ever had.

good to see some chatter on the meaningless ESPN Dodgers-Giants game tonight about the embarrassingly stupid "ground rule double, runner at first has to stop at third."
I mean, it's embarrassingly stupid on a lot of levels, so let's try a baby step first.
if there are 2 outs, the runner at first base is waved home (if this has to be only on balls over the OF fences, ok. at least it's a start).
SF should have taken the lead late tonight, but this stupid rule prevented it (not that it means anything, but sensible is better than stupid - no matter what the stakes).
I think David Cone was mentioning something like "what if the runner from first is already past second base when the ball goes over the fence?"
I mean, sure. but as I said, maybe if we just pass this blindingly obvious baby step first, we can go from there.

per Fangraphs, the odds of the Greatest Collapse Ever; Yankees missing division title after leading by 15.5 games; stand at 3.2%, or 1 in 30.
I find that personally a bigger story than Judge winning a batting title. Or setting the AL home run record, which is 7th overall in MLB history. But YMMV :)

It'd be a bigger story only if it knocked the Yankees out of the postseason altogether, or if they got knocked out in the first round.** The historic collapses that are most remembered usually involved pennant races or pre-wild card division races.
(Also, what do you think the pre-season odds would've been for Aaron Judge even being in serious contention for the batting title this late in the season? I doubt if it'd be greater than 1 in 30.)

Crew fans are very aware of both Hayes and Arenado. Both are fantastic but if pushed to choose would go with Hayes.
On review that was kind of crazy he homered. Pitch looked to be tailing away and Rizzo went down on one knee with the swing.
