HOW WILL THE ANGELS WIN TODAY?!
   2. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: April 17, 2021 at 02:57 PM (#6014002)
Good lord, Tyler Glasnow with runners on base is brutal to watch.

Breaking news! Tim Locastro caught stealing by Yan Gomes after starting his career 28-for-28!

And of course the next batter hit a homer.
   4. Voodoo Posted: April 17, 2021 at 03:28 PM (#6014009)
Cubs offense finally breaks out, Wilson Contreras with two home runs today, giving him four in the last three games. Baez with a three run bomb and the Cubs lead 6-0 after three innings.
   5. Misirlou cut his hair and moved to Rome Posted: April 17, 2021 at 03:37 PM (#6014011)
Willson with 5 HR and 8 RBI on the season.
   6. Howie Menckel Posted: April 17, 2021 at 03:59 PM (#6014014)
Locastro left the game after that third inning, too.

well, he had a good run

What in the hell are the Red Sox wearing today?
   8. Froot Loops Posted: April 17, 2021 at 04:36 PM (#6014027)
Chris Sale wants to come off the IL just so he can cut those uniforms up.
   9. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: April 17, 2021 at 04:38 PM (#6014030)
Apparently they are a reference to the Boston marathon. Huh?
   10. Mike Webber Posted: April 17, 2021 at 05:04 PM (#6014034)
WORST UNIFORMS EVAH!

I hope they sell none. But I've seen people wearing those gawd-awful neon Baylor uniforms long before their tournament run this year.
   11. Walt Davis Posted: April 17, 2021 at 05:27 PM (#6014038)
Just tuned into the Cubs game (gimme a break, it's 7 am over here). When Matt Duffy came to the plate I assumed it was the pitcher ... how skinny is that guy by today's standards? And Austin Romine has a fine beard -- larger than a non-religious beard should be but well maintained and not out of place on his head.

Oh FFS, a mid-inning pitching change with 2 outs and a 9 run lead
   12. cardsfanboy Posted: April 17, 2021 at 05:43 PM (#6014040)
Cardinals offense showed up today so far, Yadier with 2 hr, 4 rbi, season ops now at 1.024
   13. Walt Davis Posted: April 17, 2021 at 05:49 PM (#6014042)
You guys weren't kidding about the Red Sox unis. It's like I'm watching the 50s KC A's. Nice to see they sprung for a color-matching, one-time use catcher's protector and helmet.

Everyone was pissed that they traded Mookie, but see what financial flexibility can do?
   15. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: April 17, 2021 at 06:03 PM (#6014046)
I went to the grocery store...did I miss a rain delay or something? How is this game still only in the third?
   16. cardsfanboy Posted: April 17, 2021 at 06:06 PM (#6014047)
Edmonds was one of my favorite players, but an entire inning harping on the shift is making me hate hearing his voice.
   17. Shohei Brotani (formerly LA Hombre) Posted: April 17, 2021 at 06:17 PM (#6014049)
Edmonds was one of my favorite players, but an entire inning harping on the shift is making me hate hearing his voice.
I own an Edmonds Angels jersey and all, but, yeah, he never struck me as a supergenius or anything.
   18. Howie Menckel Posted: April 17, 2021 at 06:17 PM (#6014051)
deGrom leadoff single, they sacrifice him to second, productive-out him to 3rd, and he scores on a single.

1-0 Mets, although I suppose that was obvious from the previous sentence and the previous four years.

deGrom is 4 for 6 this season, by the way.

Rockies batters 4 thru 8 are at .175, .189, .186, .115, and .167, respectively

they're due, I tell ya!

deGrom has 7 K in 3 IP

7-inning opener, so I hear the Mets' bullpen is out on a "team-building exercise" at a local pot dispensary.

they'll be back in time for the nightcap.
   19. phredbird Posted: April 17, 2021 at 06:32 PM (#6014055)

yadier is killing the ball today.

2 homers and a double.

   20. JJ1986 Posted: April 17, 2021 at 06:32 PM (#6014056)
Jake deGrom is mowing down Rockies.
   21. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: April 17, 2021 at 06:38 PM (#6014057)
This “whoo!” thing really, really needs to stop.
   22. cardsfanboy Posted: April 17, 2021 at 06:39 PM (#6014058)
Yadier has a pitiful at bat, only managed a double.
   23. Howie Menckel Posted: April 17, 2021 at 06:39 PM (#6014059)
9 Ks in a row for deGrom, will try to match or exceed the all-time record of 10.

a record held, of course, by Tom Seaver. deGrom, like all Mets this year, has a "41" patch on his uniform in memory of Seaver's death.

alas, a grounder hit up the middle flummoxes 2B McNeil, who likely was daydreaming about last night's dinner, or something, and commits a throwing error.

I didn't expect them to hit another fair ball, either - to be fair.
   24. cardsfanboy Posted: April 17, 2021 at 06:46 PM (#6014060)
Bases loaded, no outs and the Cardinals fail to score. Yes they are up 9-4 right now, but still you should never take the foot off of the gas pedal.
   25. Shohei Brotani (formerly LA Hombre) Posted: April 17, 2021 at 06:47 PM (#6014061)
Unearned run scores against deGrom. Cue up another loss/no decision.
   26. cardsfanboy Posted: April 17, 2021 at 06:51 PM (#6014062)

Considering the bad luck he has, in a past life, DeGrom must have been a really bad person.
   27. Nasty Nate Posted: April 17, 2021 at 06:56 PM (#6014063)
Yankees have the worst record in the AL
   28. Shohei Brotani (formerly LA Hombre) Posted: April 17, 2021 at 06:58 PM (#6014064)
Considering the bad luck he has, in a past life, DeGrom must have been a really bad person.
The ~$35 million he's getting this year probably takes the edge off some of that pain.
   29. Froot Loops Posted: April 17, 2021 at 06:58 PM (#6014065)
deGrom gave up three unearned runs in the fifth, but considering he allowed a triple and a homer, that "unearned" deserves a Kathryn Hahn wink.
   30. Howie Menckel Posted: April 17, 2021 at 06:59 PM (#6014066)
C Nunez stuns with a rocket off the RF wall that Conforto - didn't play so well. so a triple for a catcher.

then a short liner to RF, Nunez tries to score. Conforto with a comically terrible throw - and finally, finally, finally, deGrom appears human and visibly pissed at the ineptitude of his teammates.

Tapia follows with a solo HR just inside the RF foul pole before deGrom ends it with an angry K.

and there's Marwin Gonzalez with his first HR for the Boston Yellow Sox.
   31. JJ1986 Posted: April 17, 2021 at 07:21 PM (#6014069)
Holy #### Daniel Bard is slow to the plate.
   32. Howie Menckel Posted: April 17, 2021 at 07:22 PM (#6014070)
"Francisco Lindor became a true Met today."

somebody will write that if the Mets hold on and his go-ahead single in the last inning plates what becomes the winning run.

it's a tired Yankees trope, but it's also up there on a tee.

deGrom in the dugout looking stunned at the rally.
   33. Howie Menckel Posted: April 17, 2021 at 07:39 PM (#6014071)
Edwin Diaz, channeling his inner Mariner, with the K K K save

Rockies whiffed 17 times, which is a lot - for a 7-inning game.

they did NOT whiff for an out only 4 times - including the first two outs of the game.

after that, just a sac fly and a fly out for the awful Rockies.

deGrom entered the game unbeaten in his last 16 road starts, with a 2.13 ERA. today's 6-inning, no-ER effort doesn't hurt.

of course, deGrom is 17-0 in those games.
of course, I am kidding. he is 7-0 with TEN no-decisions.
   34. cardsfanboy Posted: April 17, 2021 at 07:47 PM (#6014072)
Shildt is going to destroy this staff if he doesn't show some type of restraint in pulling pitchers. I'm not sure he understands the concept of a 162 game season.
   35. cardsfanboy Posted: April 17, 2021 at 07:59 PM (#6014073)
Edmonds brings up a good point, it's first and third, one out, 9-4 score, bottom of the ninth and a wild pitch happens and McCutchen, who is on third, doesn't score and he probably easily makes it, but Edmonds points out that "it's probably a good play by McCutchen, his run really doesn't matter, no reason to take a risk there." (next batter walked, so tying run is on deck.. .you have to play to the point to get that guy to the plate)

(and Bryce Harper is still on the bench)
   36. cardsfanboy Posted: April 17, 2021 at 08:02 PM (#6014074)
game ends for the Cardinals, 9-4 Cardinals. I will say I will always love the powder blue uniforms.
   37. Howie Menckel Posted: April 17, 2021 at 08:31 PM (#6014076)
well, one of baseball's most hallowed active streaks has come to an end just now - namely, Sandy Alcantara's strong of Consecutive Quality Starts, which had stood at a robust 8.

Sandy went 6 1/3 innings and had allowed only 2 ER, but he left two runners on for the Marlins' Kerosene Korps relief crew. a 3-run pinch-HR by SF's Slater later, and the streak was over.
   38. Walt Davis Posted: April 17, 2021 at 08:38 PM (#6014077)
"Francisco Lindor became a true Met today."

Based on the first sentence, I assumed he was the one who made the error leading to all the UER. Becoming a "true Met" is a good thing now?
   39. Howie Menckel Posted: April 17, 2021 at 08:42 PM (#6014078)
they've only lost 3 games all season - one more than the Dodgers.

maybe so.
;)

Twins @ Angels has been postponed due to Covid issues. Sounds like they aren’t yet sure how wide the exposure is on the Twins.
   41. Baldrick Posted: April 17, 2021 at 09:55 PM (#6014084)
Profar just got awarded first base on catcher’s interference and it really looks like he just intentionally ‘swung’ at the glove.
   42. The Yankee Clapper Posted: April 17, 2021 at 11:03 PM (#6014093)
Sunday’s Twins @ Angels is also now reportedly postponed.
   43. Rennie's Tenet Posted: April 18, 2021 at 07:28 AM (#6014108)
I missed it when it happened, but I just noticed that Ken Reitz passed away on March 31. RIP.

18 days into April, and BB-Reference hasn't recorded a death of a former major leaguer so far this month. The total for this year sits at 39. 128 deaths were recorded April 1 2020 to March 31 2021.
   44. Howie Menckel Posted: April 18, 2021 at 01:41 PM (#6014133)
Jay Bruce is retiring - AFTER today's Yankees game.

just turned 34 this month, but an everyday gig in place of injured 1B Voit produced a 4 for 34, and 36 OPS+ and I guess he figured that's enough.

319 HR, tied for 122nd all-time with the Fielders. 108 career OPS+

apparently Yankees can't recall Ford until Tuesday and tomorrow is an off-day, so he's on hand just in case.

Bruce shares 50th all-time with 1,572 K with Jason Giambi, so that mark could be on the line with a farewell AB. or a Ted Williams "farewell tater" would jump him over the Fielders and into a share with Troy Glaus and Vinny Castilla.
   45. The Duke Posted: April 18, 2021 at 02:01 PM (#6014136)
Even if Profar kinda swings late, the glove shouldn’t be hanging over the plate to be hit
   46. The Yankee Clapper Posted: April 18, 2021 at 02:54 PM (#6014144)
Monday’s Twins @ Athletics games has been postponed due to the Twins Covid outbreak. They hope to play a doubleheader Tuesday.
   47. The Yankee Clapper Posted: April 18, 2021 at 03:05 PM (#6014146)
Stephen Strasburg scratched from today’s start, and headed to the IL with shoulder inflammation. Not good.
   48. Tom Nawrocki Posted: April 18, 2021 at 03:10 PM (#6014147)

It must be really depressing to be playing out the string with a last-place team.
   49. CFBF's Results are Certified Posted: April 18, 2021 at 07:26 PM (#6014181)
Kyle Hendricks gives up four homers in the first inning, which is definitely rough. But you know, sometimes you're going to get tagged by really good hitters like Freddie Freeman, Travis d'Arnaud...um, Ehire Adrianza and...Guillermo Heredia.
   50. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: April 18, 2021 at 07:32 PM (#6014183)
At this rate this is gonna end up like those 24-22 games with the Phillies.
   51. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: April 18, 2021 at 09:18 PM (#6014198)
I’m beginning to suspect this might not be the Cubs’ year.
   52. Walt Davis Posted: April 18, 2021 at 09:41 PM (#6014200)
Not watching ... can somebody explain this play description from ESPN from the 4th inning?

d'Arnaud sacrificed into double play, right to first to third to second to shortstop, Acuña Jr. scored, Freeman thrown out at third.

Sac fly to RF (potentially) scoring runner from 3rd, tried to double runner off first but throw didn't beat him, runner on 2nd takes off for 3rd, gets caught in run down?
   53. Brian C Posted: April 18, 2021 at 10:12 PM (#6014204)
Yeah Freeman got caught in a rundown between 2nd and 3rd.
   54. Brian C Posted: April 18, 2021 at 10:16 PM (#6014205)
This will (presumably) be the first game this season the Cubs have lost when they scored at least 4 runs. They'll drop to 5-1 in those games.

They're 1-8 when they score 3 or less.
