cardinals with their usual lackluster effort, but because they are playing the angels after playing the marlins, the pitching is keeping them in the game.

cards also helped by angels catching the cards TOOTBLAN bug and failing to score when a runner falls down after rounding third on a sure run scoring hit.

Mets issue apology tonight to the Newsday beat writer, saying "we don't condone this behavior from any employee" and they will have "further discussions internally with all involved employees."

wow, if Calloway survives this.....

and fyi, this isn't nearly the top NY/NJ shitshow. that would be the Knicks, who this week banned the NY Daily News from its draft press conference because the owner gets upset when he is called out for being a lousy owner.

....................

from Deadspin:
"perhaps the most surprising part of this story is the fact that Callaway and Vargas got so angry at Healey for not leaving. One would think that two members of the Mets would be used to not being able to get someone out by now."

yadier giving the fans time to appreciate albert every time he comes up to bat all through the series and the crowd has responded.

pujols hit a hard single last time up, it looked like ausmus was ready to take him out, but since it's a close game, he's leaving albert in.
   105. phredbird Posted: June 23, 2019 at 09:38 PM (#5855238)

howie, i missed this. what happened?
   106. phredbird Posted: June 23, 2019 at 09:45 PM (#5855242)

even the broadcasters are ragging on angel hernandez. he's outdoing himself tonight.

otherwise alex and crew have been intolerable to listen to, constantly trying to out fanboy each other about albert pujols, cardinal history, etc.
   107. phredbird Posted: June 23, 2019 at 10:06 PM (#5855246)

well, albert gets one last at bat in the 9th, with the bases loaded and a nice hand ...

Pujols batting with bases loaded, no outs, in top of 9th. Will Molina tell him what’s coming?
   109. phredbird Posted: June 23, 2019 at 10:08 PM (#5855248)

a weird hush falling over the crowd as they watch a bittersweet moment for sure.

hell, it feels like a tennis match.

he pops up ...

a hug from yadi

No called third strike today for Albert.

Aww.
   112. phredbird Posted: June 23, 2019 at 10:10 PM (#5855251)

... and now he gets a curtain call.
   113. phredbird Posted: June 23, 2019 at 10:11 PM (#5855252)

i think albert was just talking about angel hernandez in the dugout.

it looked like he was saying 'he can't do nothing right' ...

... or maybe i'm just imagining things.

Pujols OPS+ with Cardinals, best to worst:
192 189 187 178 173 173 168 157 157 151 148

all in 634+ PA. what could be better?

Trout OPS+ with Angels, best to worst:
198 197 186 179 176 172 168 168

now, 3 times Trout has not reached 634 PA (not even counting his unlisted half-rookie season). the 197 is this year, too, so he'd need to stay healthy.

but Trout's peak as a hitter so far is right there with Pujols, durability making it so close - and should we get started on defense and baserunning?

   115. phredbird Posted: June 23, 2019 at 10:13 PM (#5855254)

big hit for the angles, now they are up 4-0, and that might as well be 14-0 the way the cards are hitting.

and should we get started on defense and baserunning?

Pujols with the Cardinals has +16 baserunning runs and +3.3 dWAR. Trout is +33 and +3.4. Trout's value has come in less time, but this is not as big an edge for him as you seem to be implying. Pujols was a GREAT first baseman for several years (still a first baseman, of course), and a very savvy baserunner in his younger days; as one example of the latter, in this game, he scored from second on an infield groundout to break a tie in the top of the ninth. (I had just turned on the TV as the play was happening and was VERY confused for a while.)

I wasn't going to say it, because obviously...but great post.

Just tuned in. Have the Angels had the bases loaded the entire game? Or does this ever end??
   119. phredbird Posted: June 23, 2019 at 10:30 PM (#5855261)

angels bat around, and there was a distinct possibility the inning would go on forever, and albert pujols would be hitting in perpetuity, but angle hernandez does his thing and rings up mike trout on a ball.

Who in MLB thought it was a good idea to assign the Angel Hernandez crew to a highly anticipated series in which he’d be the home plate umpire on a national ESPN broadcast? Must have let their defense lawyer in Hernandez’s lawsuit make the call.
   122. phredbird Posted: June 23, 2019 at 10:45 PM (#5855266)

holy cats ... the cards start scoring runs all of a sudden. angels bring in their closer, who gives up a two run double.

then a single, now it's 6-4 angels and carpenter up to bat.

the cards 1-5 hitters are hitless tonight.

ESPN was more than happy to point out what a terrible job he was doing. ARod was noting that players were taking defensive swings at pitches because they had no way of knowing whether they'd be called balls or strikes.

They could just show a tape of this game as Exhibit 1 at the "why Angel Hernandez needs to not be an umpire anymore" hearing.
