HOW WILL THE ANGELS LOSE TODAY?!
   2. The Duke Posted: May 22, 2021 at 03:04 PM (#6020259)
White Sox about to lose again to streaking Yanks. If they lose again tomorrow calls for TLRs head should crescendo by Monday evening. Must be tough having to win almost every game to keep away the hounds.
   3. The Yankee Clapper Posted: May 22, 2021 at 03:08 PM (#6020260)
From the YES broadcast, quoting Elias research, the Yankees are the 1st team in MLB history to have a No-Hitter, Triple Play, and Walk-Off Win within 3 days. Fate continues to smile on the Yanks today, as they lead the White Sox 6-0, behind Geritt Cole, helped by 4 double plays.
   4. ERROR---Jolly Old St. Nick Posted: May 22, 2021 at 03:45 PM (#6020266)
If Cole leaves for a reliever in the 8th, the last 4 Yankees starters will have posted Game Scores of 95 (Kluber), 70 (Germán), 80 (Montgomery). and 73 (Cole). Just keep it up for another 5½ months.
   5. Doug Jones threw harder than me Posted: May 22, 2021 at 03:57 PM (#6020268)
Trevor Bauer was taken out after something 126 pitches while leading 2-1 with one out in the 7th.

What that says to me is that Trevor Bauer had to work really hard to keep that lead against the Giants lineup.
   6. TomH Posted: May 22, 2021 at 04:03 PM (#6020269)
odd stat

Yasmani Grandal has 11 hits in 2021.
But he has scored 20 runs, and driven in 17.
If he keeps up this pace, he will score 75 runs... while hitting .133!
   7. The Duke Posted: May 22, 2021 at 04:26 PM (#6020274)
How do you throw 126 pitches in 6 1/3 and only give up one run? That’s only like 25 batters. He must have been 3-2 on almost everyone

Hilariously, he got the first batter on one pitch.

For the record, it was 26 batters and the run was unearned. He needed 35 pitches to get through the 4th (no runs). He threw 13 pitches to the two batters in the 6th. He went 3-2 on "just" 8 batters.

I just noticed that Kris Bryant hasn't started at 3B since Apr 20. I knew it hadn't been many lately but I didn't realize it was zero. For now a mix of Duffy hitting and a spate of OF injuries (Pedrson, Happ and now Heyward and Marisnick have all spent time on the IL) but if Duffy keeps hitting, Bryant won't get much more time at 3B this year.

Perils of watching with the sound off ... Mikolas pulled after 4 after tossing a few warmups ,,, dud the Cards' replacement just hurt himself during his warmups too?
   11. cardsfanboy Posted: May 22, 2021 at 08:45 PM (#6020320)
Edmundo Sosa with a true triple, one in which he earned it by hustling it out of the box and challenging the outfielder. (close enough play at the bag that the Cubs considered challenging, but he was safe)

Cardinal announcers are gushing over Baez's tagging ability "if they ever have a seminar on tagging, he's going to be the choice to lead it, he's changed the way we look at it"

Welp that was a fun 4 innings for Mikolas. He's done for the year.

Yadier showing why, even at his advanced age, he's still one of the elite players at his position as he hits his 7th hr of the season.
   15. cardsfanboy Posted: May 22, 2021 at 10:01 PM (#6020331)
that was a bs call.
   16. cardsfanboy Posted: May 22, 2021 at 10:02 PM (#6020332)
Ball was clearly foul. I'm starting to believe there is a conspiracy among umpires this year to make poor calls in some weird attempt to show that robo umps would do a worse job.... not sure how that theory works, but in my head I'm seeing this as a possibility as I don't remember as many poor calls in such a short time as we have seen this year.
   17. Walt Davis Posted: May 22, 2021 at 10:02 PM (#6020333)
I've never seen that before. It did look like it was eking back fair when he grabbed it but I haven't seen a replay yet that gives us a view.

jesus christmas crooked christ on a crispy crap cracker what a bad call.

I love the fact that Albert Pujols can go 1-4 for the rest of the year and continue to improve his stat line. It’s a pretty low bar.

Don’t look now but the Dodgers haven’t lost (5-0) since Albert showed up. They really needed to right the ship and keep things close until the big guns get back. If Albert does nothing the rest of the year he may have helped save their season this week. They stuck him In the 4-hole and he’s had a hand in helping them score almost every game.

It’s nice to see. It’s not three gargantuan home runs for the Boston Braves but it’s a nice finish.

30 years ago today, the Phillies Tommy Greene threw his masterpiece no hitter: 10Ks, 7 BBS!

Edit: 130 pitches. He threw 200 or so innings in 91 and 93 and 221 over the other 6 years of his career, mostly as a starter.

The Mariners have 12 qualifiers for the batting the title. The 6th highest average among them is .183.

The Braves have received a gift from god. A four game series against the Pirates to lift their spirits. Should have swept them but three out of four ain’t bad

Bases loaded walk off walk to Aaron Judge in the 9th gives the Yankees a 5-4 victory, and a sweep of the White Sox, who had entered the series with the best record in the League.

Rays 29-19
Red Sox 29-19
Yankees 28-19

Set up a zoom call with a friend who has the Nats game playing in the background. Then have your father tell his friend to shut up and move his head......

For the second time this week the Rockies failed to score a runner from second on a double off the wall
   33. The Duke Posted: May 23, 2021 at 06:18 PM (#6020464)
The mere presence of Pujols on the bench has scared giants pitchers into submission. Pujols is 6-0 as a dodger. He must really miss Anaheim and all the fun they are having since he left
   34. Walt Davis Posted: May 23, 2021 at 06:26 PM (#6020468)
#28 ... it hasn't affected the tightness of the race but the impressive records in the ALE are largely due to their 22-12 record against the NLE. The Yanks have also beat up on the ALC (9-1) but are 11-14 in their own division.

can't imagine anyone missing the Phil Miracle for a regular-season baseball game.

oldest player ever to win a major was old Tom Morris in 1867 - until Julius Boros broke the record at age 48 a mere 101 years later.

we wait another 53 years and Phil, who turns 51 shortly, shatters another gray ceiling.

he pretty much escaped a mosh pit as he, and most of the population of South Carolina, advanced to the 18th green en masse.
   37. phredbird Posted: May 23, 2021 at 08:17 PM (#6020477)

well whatever happens today, i don't think i will be upset. much.

just got back from meeting with a patron who bought a couple of my paintings, righting the ship for the month.

so i see the game is scoreless in the 4th but the Chic manager and bench coach have been ejected? what happened.

oh jeez, now bader wastes a leadoff double with a TOOTBLAN into a double play ...

Is that billiards?
   39. phredbird Posted: May 23, 2021 at 08:20 PM (#6020480)

with his speed, he didn't need to have a giant lead to score if the ball got over the infield.

instead, the 2B makes a great grab of a liner, and fires to second catching bader trying to get back.
   40. phredbird Posted: May 23, 2021 at 08:21 PM (#6020481)

and now we follow with a double and a walk, and wainwright batting.

well he's gonna swing away, he hit a ball pretty hard earlier, so maybe something can happen.
   41. phredbird Posted: May 23, 2021 at 09:18 PM (#6020488)

i ... am speechless. the cubs aren't going to challenge that call? wow.
   42. phredbird Posted: May 23, 2021 at 09:19 PM (#6020489)

did they forget the force was on? the guy caught the ball with his foot on the bag, anybody could see it.
   43. phredbird Posted: May 23, 2021 at 09:20 PM (#6020490)

oh well ... it looks like we're going to blow this anyway ... jesus.
   44. phredbird Posted: May 23, 2021 at 09:22 PM (#6020492)

cubs getting help from the umps now.

this has been a very frustrating inning.
   45. phredbird Posted: May 23, 2021 at 09:26 PM (#6020493)

so we get a gift call with runners on 1st and 2nd, wainwright batting. he bunts to the pitcher, who throws to third. the throw pulls the 3B off the bag, he goes to tag the runner and the ump calls the runner safe.

the 3B not only had his foot on the base when he caught the ball, but when he did a sweep tag he caught the runner on the toe sliding in. the replay was really easy to call. but the cubs did not challenge. bases loaded, nobody out.

so the cardinals promptly follow with a grounder right to the 2B who throws out the runner at home on the force, then goldschmidt pops up.

arenado batting.

The umpiring in this game has been horrendous, to state the obvious.

arenado strikes out ... holy cr@p what a wasted opportunity.
   48. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: May 23, 2021 at 09:34 PM (#6020496)
I hope the league has a chat with the rookie plate ump about tonight’s strike zone. He’s doing a great Eric Gregg impression.
   49. cardsfanboy Posted: May 23, 2021 at 09:37 PM (#6020497)
Did the Cubs have a challenge left after they wasted a challenge earlier?
   50. salvomania Posted: May 23, 2021 at 09:45 PM (#6020499)
Not impressed by Sosa's baserunning. He had third base all to himself the precious pitch when nobody was covering with the 3b crashing in, but he didn't see it.

Then when the bunt does get down, he must have gotten a horrible break because with his speed (a young SS, he's gotta be fast, right?) he should have made third easily and was only safe due to an umpire's gift.

Then on the GB to second---not hard hit, a couple bounces---again he was out at home by a healthy margin when you'd think he'd be getting a good secondary lean and would be blazing home on contact.

Don't know much about him, maybe he's one of those lithe, slender guys who looks fast but isn't.
   51. Brian C Posted: May 23, 2021 at 09:46 PM (#6020500)
Edmundo Sosa just struck out after swinging and missing on a pitch a foot and a half outside. Said the ump, "Was a strike anyway."
   52. cardsfanboy Posted: May 23, 2021 at 09:48 PM (#6020502)
Every time I've seen him play, he doesn't make me think he's fast, maybe above average (for his job, not talking general populace) at best, but nothing I've seen from him indicates he's on a Bader/Edman/O'Neil speed scale, and probably closer to a DeJong speed guy.

(he has 37 steals in 500 games in the minors with 23 caught stealing... I'm thinking he's not that fast--although he does have 22 triples in that time frame which is nothing to sneeze at)
   53. cardsfanboy Posted: May 23, 2021 at 09:52 PM (#6020503)
Cubs have two hits this game, and will probably still end up winning.
   54. cardsfanboy Posted: May 23, 2021 at 09:53 PM (#6020504)
Wainwright is at the age that he shouldn't be pulled while pitching a one hitter after 8 innings and having 101 pitches and one walk.
   55. cardsfanboy Posted: May 23, 2021 at 09:57 PM (#6020505)
Just read a cute story about Molina's homerun yesterday. A guy proposed on the video board in the 7th inning of the game, and his fiancee(she said yes) favorite player Yadier Molina was up to bat and looked at the tv and smiled, then hit a homerun, he even mentioned it in the post game interview etc.

   56. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: May 23, 2021 at 10:16 PM (#6020509)
I remember the last time Cubs/Cards went to extras scoreless. Matt Morris and (I wanna say) Carlos Zambrano both pitched incredible. Kyle Farnsworth came in and promptly blew it.
   57. cardsfanboy Posted: May 23, 2021 at 10:17 PM (#6020510)
well that sucks.
   58. phredbird Posted: May 23, 2021 at 10:19 PM (#6020511)

this is so effed up.

8 innings of one-hit ball from wainwright wasted. effing wasted.

Well this is going as badly as possible.
   60. cardsfanboy Posted: May 23, 2021 at 10:41 PM (#6020514)
Sadly the Cardinals don't even have a pinch runner for Molina. Moroff or a pitcher is the only options.

(they instead bring in Knizner)

I think this is the 3rd time Kimbrel has had to deal with the unearned runner and the 3rd time he's let him score.

And that's understating it, since they're 6-4 against Baltimore and 5-10 against the Rays and Jays. They've yet to play the Red Sox.

The next two weeks will be a tester, with 3 games at the Stadium with the Jays, 4 with the Rays and 3 with the Red Sox, sandwiched around a 3 day road trip to Comerica next weekend. After all that, they'll have only 9 more games remaining with Toronto, only 6 more against Tampa Bay, but 16 more against Boston.
