Today I learned that former MLB 3B Phil Nevin's son, Tyler Nevin, plays 3B for the Orioles.

The active Orioles relief pitchers have thrown 119.2 innings and allowed 30 earned runs for an ERA of 2.26.

Scherzer has an oblique which is what I suspected. Good on him not doing one more thing. Probably 4-6 weeks.

Robinson Cano - left for dead after the Mets tossed him aside - is 2 for 9 for the Padres.

he's 81st in Hits with 2,634. if he can get 56 more, he passes O'Rourke, Foxx, Cross, TWilliams, Heilmann, NFox, GDavis, Carey, Aparicio, FClarke, and Sheffield for 70th place. needs 210 to get into top 50 and.. can't imagine that's gonna happen.

Since the Mets are also picking up the tab for Cano in 2023, he only needs to be good enough to justify a roster spot at the MLB minimum. If he can do that for the rest of this season without being released, he’d probably get an opportunity to try again next year. Iffy, but not impossible, although unlikely to get the PA, and/or hit well enough, to move very far up the hit list.

Stanton solo HR (#11) to LF (392 feet) ties it up 3-3 at Camden Yards.

I assume you mean "oblique injury" but it's amusing thinking of you being like "ah ha, he does indeed have an oblique!"
   8. Howie Menckel Posted: May 19, 2022 at 02:28 PM (#6077489)
he'll throw a bullpen or two and then he'll be fine

Kiner-Falefa 2-out, bases-loaded, 2-run single avoids the squander - 5-3 Yankees in mid-6th.

So... still dead?

It's a ridiculously small sample size, but his OPS is lower with the Padres than it was with the Mets.

this is the last the Yankees will see of the Orioles until.... JFC, Monday. by middle of next week, the teams will have met 13 times already - and it won't even be Memorial Day yet.

I think that means they'll only have 26 more meetings after that, though.

Uneducated fuzzy blue character with no impulse control eating all my cookies? Yeah no way that would be annoying.

Now saying 6-8 for Scherzer. Flaherty tweaked his oblique on a swing and the proceeded to swing again and cost himself multiple weeks of rehab. Kudos to Scherzer for coming out immediately. Saved himself 4-6 weeks in all likelihood. I bet he beats 6-8. He looked a lot better than most who rip an oblique.

Cardinals continue to save their best relievers for the playoffs while their bad relievers continue to get torched - day after day after day. Mike Shildt - we miss you.

Updating my favourite story in baseball:

The BIGBOSS (Tsuyoshi Shinjo) experience for the Nippon-Ham Fighters has gotten better with the introduction of his official theme song which will be played at a live concert before a game against the Giants later this month.

I now wish that all MLB managers had access to a hovercraft and a theme song. Even one of the two would be acceptable.

Interesting tactical decision in Cards-Mets. Extras, unearned runner, Cards get runners on 1st and 3rd with nobody out. Mets don't bring the IF in, get the GB and turn the DP, allowing the leading run to score. Of course the Mets know they'll get the unearned runner in the bottom half of the inning.

2-run HR by Alonso ends all debate.

Alonso murdered that baseball.

Unfortunately I don't think Rich Hill is pitching into the 7th inning today, Sox down 4-0 already in the 2nd. Rich hoping to get out the 2nd without any more damage.

Trevor Story heating up. 2 run homer brings it back to 4-2.
   22. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: May 19, 2022 at 08:21 PM (#6077551)
Trevor Story getting even warmer, another 2 run jack ties the game 4-4
   23. Walt Davis Posted: May 19, 2022 at 09:07 PM (#6077557)
the mention of Story had me check how Javy's doing. He's in a massive slump -- last 17 games, 139/177/169. Surprisingly just a 25% K-rate -- he's had massive slumps before but seems to me those have mostly been when he's in one of his 40% K slumps. Somehow his BABIP in this stretch is just 188. Right now, his 2022 is pretty much a match for 2020 which was terrible. Yet somehow, by bWAR, he's still above-average thanks to the glove and that somehow he's only 4 runs below average offensively.

Verdugo doubles, Mariners bring in Romo! to relieve. Isn't this guy like 105 years old...
   25. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: May 19, 2022 at 09:13 PM (#6077560)
checks on Romo, yep 39...105 in baseball years...

Trevor Story with only a single this time, drives in another run
   27. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: May 19, 2022 at 09:24 PM (#6077565)
Story steals 2B, comes home on the JBJ double, Sox up 6-4 now.
   28. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: May 19, 2022 at 09:32 PM (#6077566)
After 4 nice innings from Houck, 1H, 6K, the Sox go further into the pen. Schreiber with a clean 7th but I'd be more confident with a few more runs as the pen has not been good all year.
   29. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: May 19, 2022 at 09:44 PM (#6077572)

Javi deserves 1 bWAR per year just for entertainment value alone. That cat is never boring on the diamond

Mariners BB the now dangerous Story to face the exponentially less dangerous Dalbec
   31. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: May 19, 2022 at 09:54 PM (#6077576)
The pitcher BBs Dalbec on 4 pitches, walks in a run. Dalbec is hitting like a buck 85, sorry like a buck sixty, surely you have to throw this guy some strikes, it can't be that hard.
   32. Walt Davis Posted: May 19, 2022 at 09:55 PM (#6077577)
DBacks catcher faces a $27 fine in the players' court for failure to properly backup 1B on a GB.

By the way, in the 5th, Zac Gallen threw 40 pitches without a run scoring ... or giving up a hit (2 BB, 1 HBP). That's a long inning for no scoring. Graphic said he threw 26 pitches that inning with 2 strikes, striking out just one guy (although Happ might have gotten lucky on one of his). Cubs rookie Christophe Morel had an impressive 11 pitch PA working a walk after 1-2 followed by Andrelton going down 0-2 but working an 8-pitch walk. Happ also went down 0-2 before grounding out on his 10th pitch. Still, make a guy throw a ton of pitches in an inning, he's not able to finish batters off (just 4 strikes swinging), you're supposed to score some runs.

DBacks 3-1 top 7.

Tomorrow is Fergie Statue Day, I hope all the Chicago Primates will turn out.

Budweiser Zero ... what is the point?

Trevor Story having quite a day. 3 HRs, 7 RBI, nice.
   35. Tom Nawrocki Posted: May 19, 2022 at 11:03 PM (#6077586)
And five runs scored. When was the last time someone scored five runs in a game?

The Red Sox scored 12 runs, but only three players scored. That's gotta be a record for most runs scored in a game by a team that had only three players score runs.

Apparently Mel Ott scored 6 times in a game...twice. Shares the record with a few other guys(5 other modern day players)
