Jeff McNeil has 9 foul balls in his current 1st-inning at-bat against Miles Mikolas.

EDIT: He grounded out, on the 12th pitch of the AB. Could be a significant AB in the first inning of a doubleheader in which both teams will probably need to rely on their bullpens.

2nd inning of Mets-Cards and no HBP yet - but it's early
   3. salvomania Posted: May 17, 2022 at 03:50 PM (#6077203)
Mikolas already at 40 pitches, with no outs in the bottom of the 2nd and the bases loaded.

UPDATE: Five pitches later, Mikolas is out of the inning with just one run scoring. Seems like a missed opportunity for the Mets.

For the first month of the season, Tyler O'Neill had an arbitration hearing hanging over his head, and it was just resolved last week, with the team "winning," paying him $3.4M this year instead of $4.15M, a savings of $750K, or not much more than the minimum annual salary.

O'Neil, who had a breakout year in 2021 with 31 homers and a .912 OPS, has had a brutal 2022 so far, entering today at .193/.258/.303, with just 2 homers (one of which came on opening day), and striking out in 33% of his ABs.

I don't run a baseball team and I'm no financial genius, but I think it would be worth $750K to have my team's best hitter the previous year not have to worry about his contract and an arbitration hearing heading into a new season.

The team payroll is $157M, so that $750K would represent an increase of less than one-half of one percent.

Molina is the 8th catcher with 2,000 hits and 1,000 RBI.

Hall of Fame? 7 for 7 so far.
10 All-Star Games, 9 Gold Gloves.

the idea that his WAR or other totals might lead voters to take pause even for a year is nonsense - even if one thinks they should. regardless, they won't.

Hmmmm ... just guessing ... Piazza, both Pudges, Bench (maybe barely on the H), Yogi, Hartnett ... I'm guessing Mauer didn't get enough PT ... Simmons

How'd I do?
   7. Walt Davis Posted: May 17, 2022 at 06:37 PM (#6077239)
Not Hartnett, 87 hits short, it's the other obvious C I told myself not to forget then forgot ... unless maybe this is hits while playing C ...
   8. Walt Davis Posted: May 17, 2022 at 06:42 PM (#6077242)
Cochrane 350 hits short, Dickey just 31 hits short.

"At C" somebody should dig up. Surely Bench and Yogi didn't make it ... I think Simmons probably falls a bit short but wouldn't guarantee it so Fisk maybe; Pudge II surely.
   9. Walt Davis Posted: May 17, 2022 at 06:49 PM (#6077244)
Fisk, 2145, looks like he'd have gotten #2000 in 1992. Yadi only 36 away (and 8 RBI short if we care).

Mauer is over 2000 hits total (but not 1000 RBI) but just 1118 at C.

IRod easily the career leader at 2749. Exclusive club.

EDIT: Those are at C totals, Fisk being the first to break 2000.

Gary Carter.

LeMahieu HBP & Judge double off LF wall @ Camden Yards gives the Yankees a 1-0 lead, although Judge overslid 3rd stretching & was tagged out.
   12. BDC Posted: May 17, 2022 at 07:27 PM (#6077251)
Reid Detmers starts for the Angels here tonight in Arlington, & we'll see how close he can get to Johnny Vander Meer.
   13. Howie Menckel Posted: May 17, 2022 at 07:38 PM (#6077252)
Mets have now avoided being swept in all 16 of their doubleheaders in 2021-2022.

4-0-10 last year, and split their first one in 2022 and now shooting for a sweep.

20-11, I think that is, pending tonight's result
   14. The Yankee Clapper Posted: May 17, 2022 at 07:52 PM (#6077254)
Boston’s Nathan Eovaldi, who had pitched pretty well this season (3.15 ERA going into tonight’s start), squandered a 1-0 lead, giving up 5 Astro HRs & 9 runs in top of the 2nd, before departing with 1 out still to go. Perhaps he celebrated last night’s escape from the AL East cellar too much?
   15. The Yankee Clapper Posted: May 17, 2022 at 07:57 PM (#6077256)
Aaron Judge solo HR (#13) to right-center (410 feet) restores the Yankees lead, 2-1. Betting on himself seems like the smart move so far this season.
   16. BDC Posted: May 17, 2022 at 08:17 PM (#6077262)
Mike Trout hits an odd double to RF. Line drive over Kole Calhoun's head; Calhoun, running toward the wall, leaps at it, the ball rebounds off the wall & Calhoun falls on top of it. If it had bounced away oddly, Trout might have had a triple.
   17. BDC Posted: May 17, 2022 at 08:29 PM (#6077265)
OK, the suspense is over, my Corey Seager home-run mojo has broken up Detmer's hitless streak.

Fifth HR for Seager with me in the park this year. In 5 games, though he hit two in one of them and none in another.

Busy at work this am in Sydney, checks in on Red Sox...goes back to work.
   19. BDC Posted: May 17, 2022 at 08:32 PM (#6077267)
I guess Seager has to be my favorite player now? With Beltre retired, Andrus in Oakland, & Gallo in New York ... and fate trying to tell me something, or something ...
   20. Walt Davis Posted: May 17, 2022 at 08:34 PM (#6077268)
STOP THE PRESSES

Stand-up triple for Dan Vogelbach
   21. The Yankee Clapper Posted: May 17, 2022 at 08:38 PM (#6077269)
Aaron Judge HR (#14) to CF (422 feet) ties it up again, 3-3, but some of the other NYY players may need to pitch in tonight.
   22. Walt Davis Posted: May 17, 2022 at 08:58 PM (#6077274)
Pirate offense is on fire tonight -- 4 hits in 4 innings! Cubs 6-0
   23. BDC Posted: May 17, 2022 at 08:59 PM (#6077275)
Mike Trout scores his 997th career run ... dang, so close but he almost surely won't reach 1,000 tonight.
   24. Walt Davis Posted: May 17, 2022 at 09:04 PM (#6077276)
I guess Seager has to be my favorite player now?

Not Semien then? :-)
   25. Walt Davis Posted: May 17, 2022 at 09:05 PM (#6077277)
dang, so close but he almost surely won't reach 1,000 tonight.

Rangers bullpen finally coming around? :-)

I'll be here all week ... and until the dementia really sets in.
   26. Hombre Brotani Posted: May 17, 2022 at 09:09 PM (#6077278)
Just don't mention the Mets. I'm trying to keep the peace.
   27. salvomania Posted: May 17, 2022 at 09:25 PM (#6077280)
Tyler O'Neill just struck out for the sixth time today.
   28. BDC Posted: May 17, 2022 at 10:38 PM (#6077298)
Trout at 998 R after a homer, but it's the seventh & unless they go extras & he serves as zombie once or twice ...
   29. Hombre Brotani Posted: May 17, 2022 at 10:39 PM (#6077299)
Uh oh, Ohtani fouls a ball off his own man zone. My whole body felt that pain.
   30. Howie Menckel Posted: May 17, 2022 at 11:05 PM (#6077301)
Giants coax 5 innings of 2-run ball out of Alex Cobb at Coors tonight.

so they send him out for the 6th with a 10-2 lead - what could go wrong?

1B
1B
1B
1B
K
HR

and it's 10-7 and Cobb finally mercifully gets "put down"
   31. Hombre Brotani Posted: May 17, 2022 at 11:58 PM (#6077307)
Total collapse by the Angels bullpen and defense in this 8th inning. I don't even feel like the Rangers did anything big, but....

Texas leaguer double
Infield single, error, run scores
Walk
Walk
1-RBI single
2-RBI single
1-R
Groundout
Single, 3-base error, 3 runs score

Some games, they beat you. Some games, you lose.

STOP THE PRESSES

Stand-up triple for Dan Vogelbach
Talk about burying the lede…that has to mean that the entire Cubs outfield got Raptured in mid-play.
