What novel way will the Phillies bullpen and defense conspire to create another loss?

Six of the nine hitters in the Tigers' Game 1 lineup are currently hitting below .200.

I guess that's MLB in 2022.

(The sub-.200 hitters are regular starters, with the exception of C/OF Eric Haase, who starts about a third of the Tigers' games, and RF Daz Cameron, who's filling in for injured regular RF Robbie Grossman, who's also hitting .199).

UPDATE: Spencer Torkelson has gone 2-for-3 so far, and has raised his average from .194 to .205.

Copied over from the end of the weekend's chatter: June 4: Gil Hodges HoF bobblehead. Have other teams done VC bobbleheads? Seems a great idea.

Nolan Gorman is 12-36 with 2 HRs and 3 Doubles and some hellacious EV so far. He's also scored 9 runs. I love it when someone comes up and just hits the daylights out of the ball.

He won't see a fat fastball for the rest of the year now.

He's also a terrible defensive player. Second base will the scene of many bad plays for the Cards from here on in.

Noticed this yesterday, and my first thought was what a nice Strat card that would make.

Some poking around the stats fun (not like there are any games on at the moment):

Semien: 197/261/268, 55 OPS+, 0.3 WAR
Santiago Espinal: 264/322/384, 106 OPS+, 1.0 WAR

Correa: 275/344/407, 123 OPS+, 1.0 WAR
Jeremy Pena: 282/331/497, 139 OPS+, 2.3 WAR

Seager: 232/303/425, 110 OPS+, 1.1 WAR
Lux: 269/349/343, 96 OPS+, 1.1 WAR

Story: 226/316/445, 113 OPS+, 1.4 WAR
Jose Iglesias (yes, the old guy): 317/367/388, 107 OPS+, 0.3 WAR

Why Is a Koala not a bear ?
   9. Tom Nawrocki Posted: May 31, 2022 at 04:24 PM (#6079225)
Jose Iglesias (yes, the old guy): 317/367/388, 107 OPS+, 0.3 WAR

The fun thing about Iglesias is that he's hitting .395/.424/.482 on the road, but only .207/.292/.259 at Coors.

Rockies have a 20-year-old shortstop at AA Hartford named Ezequiel Tovar who's hitting .327./412/.601 and hopefully will make Iglesias' stay in Denver a short one.

Good to see him break out of his slump.

(He was a combined 0-for-11 with 7 Ks in four games last Monday-Friday; in his other six games he's 12-for-20 with just 3 Ks.)
   11. Howie Menckel Posted: May 31, 2022 at 04:47 PM (#6079229)
Luis Guillorme is hitting .363 with a .446 OBP in 94 PA for the Mets.
also a 164 OPS+

chicks dig the long ball, so they don't dig Luis - 1 HR, 4 RBI (also 23 singles and 5 doubles)

he also hit .333 in 68 PA in shortened 2020

3 HR, 26 RBI in 462 career PA.
(the 1960s called, they want their UT INF Guillorme back!)

In advance of their series in Canada, White Sox placed RHP Dylan Cease and RHP Kendall Graveman on restricted list for not being covid vaccinated.
Looks like they plan to play short of two arms. The only offsetting transaction was activating OF Luis Robert from the 10 day IL (after he spent less than 10 days on it, so he was likely isolating and healing from a positive covid test. Insider CWS fans can correct me, if that speculation is incorrect.)

Looks like Roger Clemens's kid is getting his first MLB ab right now.
   16. salvomania Posted: May 31, 2022 at 07:34 PM (#6079268)
Kody Clemens is Roger's kid, right? His bb-ref page doesn't mention the connection.
   17. Walt Davis Posted: May 31, 2022 at 07:52 PM (#6079270)
I don't think they add family stuff until a player makes the majors ... not sure how long it takes them to do that (not sure where they source it from).
   18. Walt Davis Posted: May 31, 2022 at 07:56 PM (#6079272)
Anyway, I didn't realize Clemens had a kid in the upper minors. Looking at Kody's b-r page:

1st year at Texas: 242/286/306
2nd year at Texas: 241/356/365
3rd year at Texas: 351/444/726

Any chance Brian McNamee's kid attends Texas? :-)

For the past two weeks good case can be made that Tyrone Taylor has been the Brewers best player
   20. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: May 31, 2022 at 08:27 PM (#6079275)
Reds v Red Sox, 0-0 in the fifth. I never seen Reds pitcher Castillo work. It's enjoyable as he just works fast and he's got 9K through 5 IP, pretty impressive stuff.
   21. Howie Menckel Posted: May 31, 2022 at 08:35 PM (#6079276)
Clemens has four sons - Koby, Kory, Kacy, and Kody.

KKKK

I can picture Roger and his wife thinking of stopping at 3 kids - then some family member or friend saying, "Um, are you sure you don't want another one? Just sayin'"

meanwhile, RBI machine Luis Guillorme plates his 5th and 6th RBI of the season and the Mets lead the hapless Gnats, 4-0.
   22. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: May 31, 2022 at 08:41 PM (#6079277)
After making a nice play to nail a runner in a pickle for the 1st out, Devers throws an easy one away trying to get the 3rd out, Reds up 1-0. Sox bats are quiet, really need Castillo out of the game as he's dominating
   23. I don't want to talk about Rocco Posted: May 31, 2022 at 08:54 PM (#6079278)
Lauer gives up a leadoff triple which should have been a double but Lo Cain is too old to bend over but anyway Lauer didn't give up a run. Helped by a ridiculously bad strike 3 call by umpire Bill Miller
   24. Howie Menckel Posted: May 31, 2022 at 09:04 PM (#6079279)
for those who listen to podcasts, apparently there is a new one called "Unwritten" with co-hosts Ron Darling and Jimmy Rollins in which they and their guests banter about what the unwritten rules of baseball are - and have they changed over the years.

...........

Mets TV booth absolutely ridiculing the Nats for playing Jeff McNeil to pull.

I mean, you can see McNeil - hitting about .320 - arrive to home plate and clearly peruse the infield defense so he can decide where to hit the ball.

McNeil then dutifully hits one to an opening toward third base for yet another hit - and the ridicule intensifies through the entire next at-bat. usually they are a jovial group - Gary Cohen, Keith Hernandez, and Darling - but they don't suffer fools gladly and to be honest, the Nats are fools.

they offered sympathy for beleaguered Nats SP Patrick Corbin.

Taylor doubles to right and drives in 3 runs. Dude is killing it right now
   26. The Yankee Clapper Posted: May 31, 2022 at 09:10 PM (#6079281)
Yankees knocking the Angels around a bit tonight. Syndergaard gave up 5 earned runs in just 2.1 innings, including a Matt Carpenter HR. A couple of tack-on runs in the 6th makes it 7-0.

EDIT: Must have caused a mild jinx, as the Angels get on the board with a Luis Rengifo solo HR. Now heading into the 7th inning stretch.
   27. Howie Menckel Posted: May 31, 2022 at 09:27 PM (#6079283)
Lindor has 19 RBI in his last 9 games, only Piazza has RBI in more consecutive games (a 15 and a 10) in Mets history.
   28. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: May 31, 2022 at 09:32 PM (#6079285)
So Votto has hit the top of the low RF wall and the ball came back into play for a long double and now's he's hit the top of the CF wall...and the ball came back into the field of play.

The odds of the same guy doing that in the same game would be like 11 gazillion to 1.
   29. Howie Menckel Posted: May 31, 2022 at 09:49 PM (#6079287)
Mets are 17 for 34 in this game.

Guillorme on a 19 for 37 streak.

and 4 games of 16+ hits in the last 8.

I'm not good at math, but those seem like good numbers.
   30. Walt Davis Posted: May 31, 2022 at 10:16 PM (#6079288)
1st & 3rd, 2 out, tie game ... Clint Frazier gets picked off first. It was a very good move but c'mon.
   31. Walt Davis Posted: May 31, 2022 at 10:30 PM (#6079289)
PJ "Pinky" Higgins goes deep. 6-5 Brewers.

Morel Javying with a triple.
   32. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: May 31, 2022 at 10:35 PM (#6079290)
Sox has 2nd and 3rd, no outs...JD struck out, Xander popped up, Verdugo hit a bouncer that ate up Votto. They got 1 run and Story K'd for the last out. Sox go down 2-1.

The inconsistency is a bit maddening, but I suppose that pretty much defines the difference between the good teams and the mediocre ones.
   33. Walt Davis Posted: May 31, 2022 at 10:36 PM (#6079291)
And Willson adds another $200,000 in international bonus money to his trade value although you can feel free for deducting $50,000 for the fact he'd be on third if he hadn't spent 10 seconds wishing the ball fair even though it didn't hit the pole (or high enough on the pole) for a HR. (It's the dark shadow corner of Wrigley plus the sun glare off my TV -- I don't have a clue where that ball hit.)
   34. Walt Davis Posted: May 31, 2022 at 10:39 PM (#6079292)
Some un-good Brewers' OF defense gives the Cubs a 7-6 lead. Ruled a hit cuz 2022 needs all the hits it can get.
   35. Walt Davis Posted: May 31, 2022 at 10:52 PM (#6079293)
So with the Brewers due up, time for some prosletyzing. If you non-Cub fans haven't checked out Christopher Morel yet, it's time you jumped on the bandwagon. My little Javy comparison is not too far off the mark -- he's a ton of fun. He's got an 11-game batting streak -- you try doing that when the league is hitting 198 -- I think has reached base every game, strikes out about an average amount, walks about three times as often as Javy, sprays the ball all over with a bit of oomph and is 5 for 7 in SBs ... that's 7 attempts in a mere 13 games coming into today -- and CF, 2B, 3B and SS so far.
   36. Walt Davis Posted: May 31, 2022 at 10:54 PM (#6079294)
Now that MLB is done paying tribute to the troops, time to make some money moving the last of the camo caps.

waino with an excellent 7-inning 2-hit no run effort against the padres, and gallego gacks up a two run HR in the 8th.

geez.

now in the bottom of the 9th.

sosa doubles with 1 out!

Yes, reached base every game of his career so far, 14. Currently slashing .288/.393./500

He is so, so fun, and just so excitable. I'm not quite sure if he's good defensively anywhere yet - too soon to tell but looks more like an infielder than an outfielder to me. His debut AB HR made me a fan for life. And he's probably the reason I'll post a new gonfalon post soon.
   41. Walt Davis Posted: May 31, 2022 at 11:16 PM (#6079301)
It would probably be optimal if he could handle CF ... especially with Brennen Davis at AAA making me nostalgiac for Brock Davis. It's easy to see him being a Dexter Fowler type and the Cubs get those about once every 50 years or so.

And that's the ugliest Cubs hat I've ever seen.
   42. phredbird Posted: May 31, 2022 at 11:18 PM (#6079302)

padres with men on 1st & 2nd in the 10, 2 out, profar singles to left, but nootbarr comes up firing and gets the runner with a perfect strike.

wow!

Morel Javying with a triple.
These days I think we need to limit the definition of “Javying” to “whiffing on a slider low and away.” Language evolves.
   46. Walt Davis Posted: May 31, 2022 at 11:49 PM (#6079308)
Why? He's not whiffing on low and away sliders for us anymore. Much like I remember those first few glorious weeks with The Redhead and try not to think about the rest of our short time together, so I will always remember El Mago as El Mago.

It's interesting that Wisdom seems to be avoiding the HR hell that has impacted so many. Still rocking a 40% K rate but 3 WAR since he came up. Walking a tightrope
   49. Walt Davis Posted: May 31, 2022 at 11:53 PM (#6079311)
Is it just me or are all A's games either 1-1 in the 7th or 8-0 in the 3rd? And I don't mean just this year, I mean since the introduction of Extra Innings and me being able to watch A's games. (The difference in A's seasons being how often they are on the front or back end of that 8-0 score.) Same with the Twins.

Is there a way to see pop ups anywhere in FG or BBref? I see IFFB% at FG which is weird measure of IFFB/total flyballs

Is there some counting stat on IF?

If yes where does Nolan Arenado rank? He's got to be number 1 by a mile. And where do the Cardinals rank as a team ? Also number 1 I bet

Braves have blown a 6-2 lead and now face the Manfred Man buzzsaw.

Mets' NL Least lead at the end of May will be 9 1/2 games or 10 1/2 games, depending on the result.

Fangraphs might have it. They do some adjustments for pop-ups (e.g. they treat them like Ks when it comes to FIP) so maybe it's in one of their tables.

On Wisdom -- he hits the ball very, very hard when he hits it. His HRs are not high fly balls that land in the first few rows. He's tied for 3rd in MLB for avg EV on FBs and LDs (behind Judge and Stanton, tied with Willson of all people). His average HR distance sits in between Judge and Stanton (not particularly highly ranked). He's 5th in barrels/BBE (Judge, Stanton, Trout ... and Pederson). His EV and hard-hit are all up a little bit this year, his xwOBAcon is over 500 in both seasons. His avg distance on FB/LDs is down by about 10 feet but it doesn't matter a whole lot when your average HR distance is over 400 feet. He might get shortchanged on a bomb to CF.

In short, the man hits rockets. He is one of the best _hitters_ in the game, he just can't hit it all that often. Back in the dark ages known as the Wily Mo Pena era, BPro surmised that it was possible for a guy to K 40% of the time but still produce enough. Looks like they might have been right (and me wrong!!) Don't get too carried away, still "just" a 117 OPS+ with a 300 OBP coming into today -- good if he can handle 3B, still average or better in a corner these days but not not MVP material or anything.

EDIT: Wisdom is 413/909 on-contact the last two "years." That's better than Ruth (at least career)

B-r used to have IFFb on “batting splits” but I can’t find it now. They do have if/fb and hr/fb on “advanced batting -> ratio batting”. Since hr is given elsewhere can work out the total number of fb and then use that to find number of if’s…?

IF/FB -- Percentage of Fly Balls that were on the infield
Includes Line Drives.
