If Marlins catcher Nick Fortes' nickname isn't already "Apollo," we need to make that a thing.

So I pop on Cards-Pads. 3-1 Cards, bottom 8 ... Darvish still on the mound, man on 2nd, Arenado up. Sure he's still under 100 pitches but so what? Anyway, 4-1 Cards now and he's out of the game.

i was watching the heard/depp verdict when i suddenly remembered it was a day game, darn it ...

so i sat through that circus and then missed a good game.

Mets (35-17) sweep the Phils and Nats, now hit the road:

4 games at Dodgers (33-16)
3 games at Padres (30-20)
3 games at Angels (30-23 but have lost 6 in a row)

then home for:
3 games vs Brewers (32-19)

so a 13-game gauntlet

then a 10-game stretch featuring 4 games vs Astros (32-18) leavened by 7 games vs Marlins (19-27) in alternating series to close out the month.

July? The Mets don't play a team currently over .500 in the 17 games until the All-Star break.

and after that, Mr. deGrom and Mr. Scherzer both may be dealing again

(Mets, Nats, and A's have played a league-high 52 games. Guardians have only played 46).

Cano is 3 for 32 for the Padres with a "slash" line of .121/.094/.215.

he can't survive the weekend, can he?

his 11 hits this year haven't moved the needle - still 81st all-time
   6. Walt Davis Posted: June 01, 2022 at 05:50 PM (#6079410)
Obviously he could go at any moment but it's not clear there's anybody to take his place until Matt Beatty or Tatis is ready to come off the DL. Anybody could take his spot without it hurting the Padres but no other obvious candidates on the 40-man to take it so he's probably not doing them any harm either.

And Christian Bethancourt with a 2-run HR to CF for the A's (3-1 over Astros) -- another one of those HRs I keep seeing that the stats and ball conspiracy tell me I shouldn't be seeing this year.

Kotsay comes out for a mound visit, gets tossed.
   8. The Duke Posted: June 01, 2022 at 06:36 PM (#6079417)
5. Cano missed an Opp Field Grand slam in Busch today by about 3 ft coming off the bench cold. I think he's got something left.

Trevor Bauer just gave Johnny Depp a thumbs up. Way to go Johnny !!!
   10. The Duke Posted: June 01, 2022 at 06:39 PM (#6079419)
I got a chance to watch the Padres for three games. What a great defensive team. I don't recall people raving about it but they've got gold glove candidates almost everywhere. It was a fun series defensively with both teams making incredible plays. Probably 5-10 highlight reel plays over 3 days.
   11. stanmvp48 Posted: June 01, 2022 at 06:50 PM (#6079422)
Marlins with a week's worth of offense in game I today. Randal Grichuk pitched the ninth

i was watching the heard/depp verdict

Killing time while waiting out the rain-delayed start to Angels @ Yankees by sampling Reds @ Red Sox, featuring Hunter Greene starting for the visitors. He does seem to regularly hit 100 MPH, or more, without much strain. Pretty good slider, too. Struck out 5 in 2 innings. At least Reds fans will have something to watch on the days he starts.

Phillies are finding noveller and noveller ways to lose (or fall behind).

Aaron Nola gives up lead off hit, then retires 15 straight. Then in the 6th, double, double, single, HBP, HR. Suddenly it’s 5-2 Giants.
Nola retires the next 3.
   15. Edmundo got dem ol' Kozma blues again mama Posted: June 01, 2022 at 08:23 PM (#6079438)
Hold on … just back from the minors Nick Maton with a 2 run blast to make 5-4.

The announcers said that Jarlín Garcia was 1 game away from setting the Giants record of most games without giving up a run to start a season.
   16. Edmundo got dem ol' Kozma blues again mama Posted: June 01, 2022 at 08:26 PM (#6079439)
And then an off the tip of the glove single by struggling rookie Bryson Stott followed by a Schwarbs HR. 6-5 Phils. Wacky game, this baseball.
   17. Edmundo got dem ol' Kozma blues again mama Posted: June 01, 2022 at 09:04 PM (#6079444)
While I doubt that the 3 batter rule has spread up the game that much, I’m glad we are in the post-loogy era.
   18. Edmundo got dem ol' Kozma blues again mama Posted: June 01, 2022 at 09:11 PM (#6079445)
The Phils bullpen DOES NOT IMPLODE, ending a 5 game losing streak.
   19. Walt Davis Posted: June 01, 2022 at 09:33 PM (#6079447)
Contreras with a nice opp field single scores Heyward to tie it ... then Willson tries to make it all the way to 3rd on the throw which was silly with 2 outs but so it goes. (I'm not sure he wasn't safe but the throw beat him by 6 feet.)
   20. Walt Davis Posted: June 01, 2022 at 09:48 PM (#6079449)
With Wisdom (3B) stationed closer to Sheffield Ave than third base, a trivial popup about 1/3 the way down the 3B line becomes a challenge. Contreras wanders down the line waiting to get called off at any second. Norris (P) naturally stands around doing nothing because ... tradition. Wisdom presumably doing his best to get there. Norris looks at ball, looks at Contreras, looks at Wisdom, looks concerned, panics. Contreras looks at ball, looks at Norris, looks concerned, panics. Pitcher, catcher, ball all arrive at the same place at the same time. All safe, Contreras keeps his eye on the ball (quite a nice play in its way), jumps up and fires in time for the force at 2B.

No harm, no foul, just another "21st century baseball is not your grandaddy's baseball" moment.
   21. Walt Davis Posted: June 01, 2022 at 09:56 PM (#6079450)
Patrick Wisdom is basically a 21st century Kingman (more defensive value, much later start to career).

PW 230/304/497, 114 OPS+, 6.7% HR, 40% K, 8% BB
DK 236/302/478, 115 OPS+, 6.0% HR, 24% K (13% lg), 8% BB
DK 29-30 285/338/583, 140 OPS+ (conveniently 2 years with the Cubs)

So not as good as Kong in Wrigley but I'll take it.
   22. Tom Nawrocki Posted: June 01, 2022 at 10:02 PM (#6079451)
For all you guys who have been complaining about a lack of run scoring, Rockies and Marlins are tied at 11 going to the 8th inning. The Marlins have scored 25 runs today.
   23. The Duke Posted: June 01, 2022 at 10:03 PM (#6079452)
Marlins - Rockies: another epic see-saw game tonight
   24. The Duke Posted: June 01, 2022 at 10:37 PM (#6079454)
Pirates seem to have LAD's number this year.

Last time I saw Pirates against Cards I was thinking this team could finish .500. They will be a force in Central in a few years. Brewers have a good cost controlled team, Cards have a ton of offensive talent, cubs shooting for a 2023 -4 renaissance and pirates about to break out. Cincinnati is screwed
   25. Howie Menckel Posted: June 01, 2022 at 11:02 PM (#6079456)
yes, kudos to the Dodgers for at least being competitive against the Pirates juggernaut.

still, barring a late Dodgers rally the Pirates will win the season series, 5-1.

this would be the first time Dodgers swept at home since 2018, which is pretty good.
   26. Tom Nawrocki Posted: June 01, 2022 at 11:06 PM (#6079457)
Marlins runs scored by month:

April: 80
May: 104
June: 26
   27. The Duke Posted: June 01, 2022 at 11:10 PM (#6079458)
Cubs helpfully put the Brewers away tonight
   28. Tom Nawrocki Posted: June 01, 2022 at 11:10 PM (#6079459)
Brendan Rodgers' third home run of the game sends a few dozen Rockies fans home happy, 13-12 in 10 innings.
   29. The Duke Posted: June 01, 2022 at 11:11 PM (#6079460)
Colorado wins a wild one on a walk off 10th inning HR. Seven lead changes - that has to be some kind of record
   30. Tom Nawrocki Posted: June 01, 2022 at 11:23 PM (#6079461)
Brendan Rodgers by month:

April: .078/.172/.098
May: .347/.380/.484
June: .500/.600/1.750

Can't wait to see what he looks like in July.
   31. The Duke Posted: June 01, 2022 at 11:24 PM (#6079462)
Pirates doing what great teams do. Sweep the weak teams and play .500 against the good teams.
   32. Sleepy was just “inspecting the bunker”, y’all Posted: June 01, 2022 at 11:24 PM (#6079463)
Contreras was way nicer than I would have been, when that moron tried to jump over him in the top of the tenth. If I turned and saw someone’s cleats at eye level I would have put him on his head.

Gotta say I’m very happy with the way the cubs-brewers series ended up though.

06.01... Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports that the Padres plan to ask Robinson Cano to accept an optional assignment to Triple-A El Paso on Thursday.
Spin: Cano is expected to then refuse that request, making him a free agent. Annie Heilbrunn has already reported that Cano has been informed and is officially no longer with the Padres. The 39-year-old hit just .094/.121/.094 with no homers, one RBI and a 10/1 K/BB ratio in 33 plate appearances with the club. He may attempt to latch on elsewhere, but it's quite possible this is the end of Cano's 17-year big league career.
