Attention shoppers! The Cleveland Guardians have tied the Twins for first in the AL Central.
   2. Captain Joe Bivens, Pointless and Wonderful Posted: June 22, 2022 at 06:34 PM (#6083320)
Jeter Downs makes his Red Sox debut tonight.
   3. Walt Davis Posted: June 22, 2022 at 07:14 PM (#6083331)
A very safe bet that he will have a career somewhere between Shawn Jeter and Derek Jeter, proving the predictive power of names!
   4. Walt Davis Posted: June 22, 2022 at 07:15 PM (#6083332)
Further proof ... as if any were needed ... Aaron Judge somewhere between Tommie and Hank Aaron.
   5. Captain Joe Bivens, Pointless and Wonderful Posted: June 22, 2022 at 07:33 PM (#6083336)
Now do Jarren Duran.
   6. Walt Davis Posted: June 22, 2022 at 07:37 PM (#6083340)
Apocalypse alert: Cubs with a 3-run inning ... still nobody out!
   7. Walt Davis Posted: June 22, 2022 at 07:42 PM (#6083342)
Somewhere between Duran Duran and Roberto Duran obviously ...

although he should be banned from baseball for "Jarren." I can't wait for our Great Socialist Worldwide Paradise where all children are assigned one of 12 governmet-approved first names.
   8. Walt Davis Posted: June 22, 2022 at 07:44 PM (#6083343)
Good golly, another hit and an Ian Happ HR and it's 7-0 Cubs.
   9. The Yankee Clapper Posted: June 22, 2022 at 08:15 PM (#6083346)
Aaron Judge HR (#26) to LF (396 feet) put the Yankees on the board, but Rays still lead 3-1. With that HR, Judge passes Tommy Henrich, and ties Charlie Keller (184) for 20th on the Yankees Career HR Leaderboard.
   10. The Yankee Clapper Posted: June 22, 2022 at 09:35 PM (#6083352)
A towering Aaron Judge solo HR (#27) to LF (406 feet) brings the Yankees to within a run, 4-3 in the 7th. With that HR, Judge passes Charlie Keller, and ties Paul O’Neill (185) for 19th on the Yankee Career HR Leaderboard.

Sox up 6-2, Baez with a 2 run shot in the first, been Sox since then.

Baez now has 2 homers and a triple, along with other hits, in this series. Are the Red Sox the only team in MLB that don't just throw him a bunch of sliders down and away that he can flail at?
   12. cardsfanboy Posted: June 22, 2022 at 09:59 PM (#6083356)
Just looking at war (bb-reference version) and it's funny how bad and good the Mess look. Best player has 2.4, worst of their top 12 has has 1.1... just a ton of good players, no elite, and that isn't actually a bad thing.
   13. cardsfanboy Posted: June 22, 2022 at 10:00 PM (#6083358)
Arenado with a homerun to put the Cardinals back in the lead.... too bad it doesn't help Waino who was pulled before this.
   14. Howie Menckel Posted: June 22, 2022 at 10:11 PM (#6083359)
NEW YORK RBI LEADERS

METS Francisco Lindor 52
YANKEES Aaron Judge 52
YANKEES Anthony Rizzo 49
YANKEES Giancarlo Stanton 42
METS Starling Marte 36

Tigers reliever Foley makes new guy Jeter Downs look like the rookie that he is as he gets him flailing away on a slider.

Really nice bit of pitching from Foley, he looks a pretty solid reliever. Too bad the Tigers can't hit, nor have much SP, because their pen looks ok.
   16. The Yankee Clapper Posted: June 22, 2022 at 10:13 PM (#6083361)
Jose Trevino’s 2-run HR (#6) to LF (406 feet) finally puts the Yankees in the lead, 5-4 in 8th.
   17. Mike A Posted: June 22, 2022 at 10:17 PM (#6083362)
Braves rally for 3 in the bottom of the 9th to edge San Fran 4-3. Maybe they can beat good teams, whaddya know.
   18. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: June 22, 2022 at 10:18 PM (#6083363)
In the "needed to get it done, but not really a huge achievement" category, the Red Sox sweep Detroit. 16-4 in their last 20 games, and I think they actually lost ground to NY in that time(today's game notwithstanding)
   19. The Yankee Clapper Posted: June 22, 2022 at 10:22 PM (#6083364)
Rays are on their 6th relief pitcher of the game, none of whom have pitched a full inning (yet).

EDIT: Ralph Garza, Jr. gets 3 outs on a mere 39 pitches in the 8th.
   20. cardsfanboy Posted: June 22, 2022 at 10:32 PM (#6083366)
Austin Hays with the cycle.

That must be riveting entertainment.
   22. The Yankee Clapper Posted: June 22, 2022 at 10:58 PM (#6083370)
Clay Holmes pitches a scoreless 9th for his 12th Save, lowering his ERA to 0.53 in the process, and maintaining the Yankees 12 game lead in the AL East. Their 51-18 record continues to match that of the fabled 1998 squad.
   23. ERROR---Jolly Old St. Nick Posted: June 22, 2022 at 11:25 PM (#6083371)
That was the kind of game---end of a road trip in a park where they haven't played well, fell behind early when their starting pitcher was off---that the Yankees would almost never have won before this year. Trevino has been the surprise star of the team, and King / Holmes may be the best setup / closer combo they've had since Phil Hughes and Mo back in 2009.
   24. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: June 22, 2022 at 11:26 PM (#6083372)
You know what is riveting entertainment? Shohei Ohtani. He would be close to inconceivable if he didn’t actually exist.
   25. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: June 22, 2022 at 11:31 PM (#6083373)
Do we have any modern card collectors here? I’d like to pick up an Ohtani rookie. Which one(s) out of the 817 “rookie cards” out there is considered his “real” rookie, and about how much should I pay for one raw? I want a card, not a slab.

Well I'm old so I'm going to say the card that comes in the pack of ten with the bubble gum strip in it.
   27. Hombre Brotani Posted: June 23, 2022 at 12:16 AM (#6083376)
Ohtani's through 7 IP, no runs, 12 Ks.
"If 8 RBIs can't get us a win, maybe allowing no runs might."
-- Shohei Ohtani, probably.
   28. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: June 23, 2022 at 12:57 AM (#6083379)
If you had said to someone a few years back, "so this guy is going to come over from Japan and in consecutive nights; hit 2 dingers and drive in 8 runs and the next night was going to throw 8 shutout innings and K 13 guys" you would have just laughed and just responded no f*cking way any player is that good.
   29. The Yankee Clapper Posted: June 23, 2022 at 01:01 AM (#6083380)
Noted slacker Shoehei Ohtani leaving after only 8 innings on the mound, and just a 5-0 lead.
   30. Hombre Brotani Posted: June 23, 2022 at 01:03 AM (#6083381)
Ohtani's got his ERA down to 2.90, and got his team a win (probably) after two bad losses.

Ohtani and Trout hide a lot of sins.
   31. ERROR---Jolly Old St. Nick Posted: June 23, 2022 at 08:57 AM (#6083392)
Too bad over half the country is asleep by the time Ohtani and Trout are in the 4th inning of most of their games.
   32. bookbook Posted: June 26, 2022 at 12:39 PM (#6083920)
There have been a lot of West Coast stars, from Steve Garvey to Barry Bonds in baseball alone. Trout is just a boring dude. If Ohtani isn’t getting the awe and love he deserves, I’m not sure why. Ichiro did it, but it’s harder for a non-American, especially in our increasingly racist milieu.
