Mike Clevinger has a sprained right elbow. Doesn’t sound like he will be OK for the playoffs.

In the no one cares but me and I find it amusing division; those battlers from Boston have a chance to pull into a tie with the mighty O's for 4th place in the East!

Though I am mildly disappointed that their team ERA is well below 6 now AND they don't even have the worst team ERA any longer...thx Detroit!
   4. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: September 24, 2020 at 08:52 PM (#5978604)
OK, so Red Sox down 4-0 in the 3rd. It looks like they have decided last in the East is ok, but really going for that team worst ERA title!

The 6+ ERA is probably not achievable as this stage, but can still wrestle the title from the mighty Tigers.

Giants lost

Lin Tzu-Wei is pitching the ninth, which means he just needs to play first and third by the end of the weekend to have had appearances at every position this season. C'mon, Red Sox, make it happen.

Red Sox lose 13-1! Now tied with Detroit for worse team ERA at 5.77! Well done boys...well done.

I looked at it earlier today, not going off short-term memory (never good) but ... barring a rainout or a last-minute covid issue, every team should make it to at least 58 games. I hadn't realized there are a couple of game scheduled for Monday. I didn't expect them to get there.
   17. JJ1986 Posted: September 25, 2020 at 09:56 AM (#5978683)
I did not realize the Cardinals were likely to have to play a double-header on Monday.

Where are you seeing this? MLB.com has no games scheduled for Mon. Could end up being relevant in fantasy.

I found this article from a week ago.

yes, they'll play Monday if necessary
   21. Rally Posted: September 25, 2020 at 10:44 AM (#5978696)
Tigers have no reason to play Monday, but sure looks like the Cardinals will. 8 teams still fighting for 4 playoff spots. 6 of whom have a reasonable chance to make it. Mets and Rockies are about as realistic playoff contenders as the Angels and Mariners, or the Rays in early September 2011. But not mathematically eliminated yet.
   22. The Duke Posted: September 25, 2020 at 11:00 AM (#5978698)
Cardinals will only play if there is a playoff spot at risk or HFA - no games if it is just for seeding. Looking less likely
   23. Rally Posted: September 25, 2020 at 11:21 AM (#5978701)
They play 4 against the Brewers this weekend. I think they need to take 3 of 4 to avoid playing Monday. If they split, they'll be 2 up on the Brewers, there are 4 teams between MIL-STL in the standings, so if the Brewers have a chance to catch them, it will probably mean a playoff spot.

HFA will probably not be a factor, San Diego has the 4 seed locked up. Though I guess the White Sox could beat up the Cubs and leave STL with a chance at the division. Reds can't win the division, they can tie Chicago but the Cubs won the season series 6-4.

This seems more likely given that the Cubs have apparently agreed not to score any additional runs this year.

Here's a more recent article on the Cardinals-Tigers potential doubleheader for Monday Sep. 28:

https://www.mlb.com/news/cardinals-tigers-september-28-games-scenarios

Relevant portion, confirming what The Duke said above:
If the playoff fields are set and playing the games would only impact seeding, but not home-field advantage, then the makeup games would not be played.

Actually I think MIL needs to win the series 3-1 to make it likely that STL would need to play Monday.

If they split 2-2, then STL will have 30 wins overall and 22 division wins. So even without playing Monday, they'd already be guaranteed to finish ahead of any of MIA, CIN, SFG, and PHI if those teams finish with 30 wins or fewer (STL would have a better divisional record than any of those teams, and already won the head-to-head season series with CIN). STL only needs to play Monday in this scenario if all 4 of MIA, CIN, SFG, and PHI reach 31+ wins, which seems unlikely (PHI would have to win out to do that, for example).

If MIL wins 3-1, then MIL would be 30-30 and STL 29-29 -- and MIA (who has 29 wins already, with 3 to play) would hold the head-to-head tiebreaker with STL (based on last 20 divisional games). If two of CIN, SFG, and PHI wind up at 30 wins, then STL may need to play Monday to resolve that.
