HOW WILL JAVY JAVY TODAY?
In the Javiest of ways.

NearJavy on the slide there, but the Dodgers clearly had JAVYING on the scouting report.

Lester looks pretty sharp so far. Len and Jim are talking at length about how Lester deal with baserunners, and it really is pretty amusing how Lester has made his inability to throw to first into an effective way to control the running game. Obviously a lot's been made of it over the last few years, but it's just so counterintuitive.

Indeed - it reminds of "min-maxing" in video games.... where you pick a character/race/team/whatever with really low capabilities in one realm and then use all available buffs to the maximum extent to neutralize the weakness.
   7. Moses Taylor, glorified meat shield Posted: April 25, 2019 at 03:05 PM (#5835347)
It's funny any time it's a nat'l broadcast has a Lester start and harps on it, like they haven't updated their storylines since 2016 (it was already overplayed and wrong in the playoffs that year).
   8. Zonk is Dominating the Battlespace Posted: April 25, 2019 at 03:07 PM (#5835348)
Be nice if some of these baserunners made it all the way around....

I am majorly TEMPTING THE FATES, but Juster Turner is looking a little...older...this year. April, blah blah blah, but there's something about his swing/running that's giving me a 2019 Zobrist vibe.

He hit that one off Lester hard, but it wasn't really that dangerous.
   10. Moses Taylor, glorified meat shield Posted: April 25, 2019 at 03:22 PM (#5835356)
Cubs are going to need a few more ABs from Lester today to score. Even if he's on a pitch count (Len/JD speculated in the 75-80 range), he's been efficient enough we might get there.

---

See, that Zo throw just had nothing on it.

So I haven't been paying much attention to the Cubbies so far this year -- despite my prediction that they will reach the World Series and lose to the Red Sox.

What's the prevailing theory in Wrigleyville for the struggles of Zobrist, Bryant, Rizzo and Schwarber through 2019's first 25 games?
   13. Joyful Calculus Instructor Posted: April 25, 2019 at 03:44 PM (#5835364)
[9] Turner has a total of 2 April home runs in his career. He does this every year for whatever reason.

Respectively: old, broken, gonna be fine, and just not all that good.

- Zobrist is old
- Bryant is broken/maybe not going to be the superstar he looked projected to be
- Rizzo always starts ice cold but eventually gets it going
- Schwarber might not be that good

Like I said last night, dude actually was a superstar for three and a half years. It doesn't work to look at a guy like that when he struggles and say, "shrug, guess he's not as good as we thought." There has to be a reason, whether he's hurt, or some mental thing, or he's actually 10 years older than he claims, or whatever. He's broken, and it's just a matter of how. We already know he's a superstar when not broken.

*shrug*

It's not my personal opinion; I was just responding to the prompt about what the prevailing thought was on why those guys are struggling thus far.

I'd also lean on "hurt/something mental" before saying he just doesn't know how to hit anymore.

Baez actually hasn't been as bad recently in terms of pace. He's improved a bit, and unfortunately there are a bunch more relievers now who are even worse.

Yeah, that's a fair way of looking at it. I guess it just depends on how you define "not all that we thought." When I first raised it, I was more referring to "not able to deliver the body of work that we had hoped" rather than "the ceiling of his ability at any given point in time is not as high as we thought."

....and I hate Zobrist.

I hadn't played fantasy for what, at least 12 years, but this year I inherited a team in my colleague's long-running keeper league. Deep league, contracts, salary cap, minor league systems, the works. It's been an interesting challenge getting up to speed.

Seconded, although there's not a ton that's really all that bad about Zobrist (until this year) so that's not saying much.

While I'm on the subject, I will agree with the consensus that Zobrist is just old and sucks now. He looks the same as he always has to me - he's just not good anymore.

I'm not sure what I think about Schwarber. He looks the same as always to me. When he slumps, though, he always looks to me like he's patiently awaiting the perfect pitch, and then when he finally gets it, he's so surprised that he ##### it up. I think if I was coaching him, I'd be coaching him to just be super aggressive, swing at everything for a week, and then work his way back to being selective after he actually gets back a feel for what he can hit.

Daily or weekly roster changes?

If daily - the key is working the reserve shuttle.

Ah, sorry to disappoint - I was tied up with something at work and missed it. Managering, can't wait for the 3-batter rule but I'm sure pathetic Manfred will puss out on it before it happens, etc.

Weekly, points, head-to-head. Not a fan of the randomness of H2H, but the weekly transactions work pretty well to eliminate pitcher streaming, which I find abhorrent.

In this case, Joe was right to pull Rosario. 5 straight balls, nowhere close, and he's just not that good and probably shouldn't be pitching the 8th of a 1 run game no matter what. I understand going from the R to the L for the Munch/Bellinger combo. In the new world rules, Joe's move of the lefty to start would have still been the right move (just wrong guy).

Javy is just crushing the ball to RF so far this year. Too hard for that to be anything but a single, but 5 of his 8 HRs are to RF (1 to CF).

It's a race between him, Almora, and Quintana for who gets the first extra base hit.

That's why Javy didn't try to stretch.... he's trying to show them that they can remain in their comfort zones, but still hit the ball with authority.

Jansen screwing up the shutout with a HR was the most predictable thing. But at least the team got a win.
   63. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: April 25, 2019 at 05:31 PM (#5835454)

Yes. Maybe I'm wrong. Time will tell.

Worth pointing out that he was pretty bad in 2017, though, so these 20 games aren't completely in a vaccum. Also he's 38, so I don't see why we're not operating on the presumption of severe decline, good year last year or not.
   65. Zonk is Dominating the Battlespace Posted: April 25, 2019 at 05:34 PM (#5835456)
Zo's ISO was actually higher in his putrid 2017 than it was in his bounceback 2018. The difference was a much higher BABIP.

He's still useful - still got a good eye, still a good clubhouse guy, still versatile - but he's 38 and he's cooked.... at least, as a guy who plays the "roamer regular" role.

I don't want him cut or anything - if nothing else, I want to keep hearing his wife's walkup music all summer :-) - but he's a non-crappy utility player at this point.
   66. Brian C Posted: April 25, 2019 at 05:35 PM (#5835457)

I know you haven't been paying attention, but "how things had played out so far" is that after a bad opening road trip, the Cubs have been pretty damn good, over a longer period of time than the period in which they were bad.
   67. Zonk is Dominating the Battlespace Posted: April 25, 2019 at 05:35 PM (#5835458)

TBF, he was hurt in 2017 - his wrist - and basically couldn't hit RH. I think him being that good last year is the real shocking thing.

We're also not basing this off his stat line. He just looks old - everything he does is very obviously slower.

To be fair - Zo is a nice guy and his wife is a recording artist. It's entirely possible he would really prefer some Slayer, but...

I once managed to appreciate Neutral Milk Hotel for almost 3 months.... I've also been to a Phish concert that I remember and even told people was totes awesome afterwards.

Yankees will be closing out the series in Anaheim with a now familiar-looking lineup (full of unfamiliar names):

2B LeMahieu
DH Voit
CF Gardner
C Sánchez
RF Tauchman
SS Torres
1B Ford
3B Urshela
LF Wade
SP Tanaka

A few more injuries and the Yankees will probably have a 10-game lead.

I used an outdated link stored in my browser's Bookmarks entitled "MLB Scores" which points to thejamootz.com which is the domain that has been "converted". Dan's wonderful, low bandwidth scoreboard thingy is still 100% fine and very much appreciated.

Gah. Sanchez now with 5 Ks in a row since he's come back.

Maybe 1 shitty minor league start wasn't enough?

Blech.

The disintegration of Kole Calhoun's career has been painful to behold.

Torres has been such utter #### since being moved up in the order.

For ####'s sake ... the Yankees need a shaman and a good smudging.

After watching Andujar flop about at 3rd last year like a walrus falling down a cliff: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qVJzQc9ELTE it's nice to watch Urshela actually field the ####### position.

Hey!

Tyler Wade isn't useless! (in the field or on the bases!)

It's hard to read/listen to Yankee fans gnash and wail about their terrible fortunes while the actual Yankees are busy sweeping the Angels. I ####### want to ####### vomit.

I'm neither wailing nor gnashing about the Yankees' fortunes this year, merely stating the obvious. Andujar can't field for #### and Wade can't hit for ####.

But Wadujar would be in the HOF.

It is known.

I'm imagining another K for Sanchez here ...

Hey ... he walked! That's ... something at least.

A very good throw by Gary Sánchez to nail Trout on a strike-him-out-throw-him-out DP.

Rangers P Taylor Hearn may be a bit nervous in his Major League debut, having walked the first three batters he faced.

It's hard to read/listen to Yankee fans gnash and wail about their terrible fortunes while the actual Yankees are busy sweeping the Angels.

Just in this series, one newcomer (Estrada) has his first MLB hit and two others (Ford and Urshela) have their first MLB home runs. And they don't have a single player in any top 10 offensive category, with one exception: LeMaheiu's in a 6 way tie for the MLB lead in sacrifice flies. He has 3.

Man, what a complete meltdown by Tanaka. He's been really good so far this year, but he just can't lose it so quickly like that with a team that is going to struggle to score runs.

ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGH.

Not just one but #TWOOBLIGITORYHOMERS.

Fack off.

What the hell is up with Tommy La Stella????

The other day I had to doublecheck the box score to see if the "La Stella" who was hitting all these homers wasn't some new rookie callup I'd never heard of.

I feel like 4 runs aren't enough.
