HOW WILL THE ANGELS WIN TODAY?!
   2. salvomania Posted: April 26, 2021 at 02:17 PM (#6015506)
Looks like the Tigers' Akil Baddoo has come back to earth: now 3 for his last 25, with 17(!) strikeouts.
   3. Howie Menckel Posted: April 26, 2021 at 02:22 PM (#6015511)
Mets, Yankees capacity boosted today from 25 pct to 33 pct.

the gallows humor in Albany politics is that every time Cuomo gets further enmeshed in scandal, venues in the state get more and more loosening of capacities.
   4. Snowboy Posted: April 26, 2021 at 02:33 PM (#6015515)
Many of Baddoo's teammates K a lot as well.
Tiger's are basically tied with TB for 2nd most batter SO, only TEX has more in AL.
Tigers are last in the AL with .205BA and 77 OPS+
7 wins is also last in the AL.
On the bright side, though, they almost lead in fewest runners left on base. Oh wait, that's probably related to them having the AL worst team OBP .264, next is CLE .282
   5. salvomania Posted: April 26, 2021 at 05:23 PM (#6015558)
Royals improve on their league-best record, going to 14-7 as they defeat the Tigers, 3-2. KC only had 8 baserunners, but one was a two-run homer, while the Tigers put 14 runners on but went 2-for-15 with RISP.

Looks like Mike Matheny is using the Royals' 2015 formula for success, with a strong bullpen and timely hitting; their Pythag going into today was 10-10, and they're now 6-0 in one-run games.
   6. salvomania Posted: April 26, 2021 at 05:31 PM (#6015561)
I see Badoo hit his league-leading 3rd triple of the year to lead off the 8th, but the next guy struck out, the guy after that hit a dribbler that the catcher fielded and was thrown out at first, and then the next guy struck out. Yeesh.

Although, as noted, Badoo has cooled off, he's tied for sixth in the AL with 11 extra-base hits, in just 54 AB.
   7. Walt Davis Posted: April 26, 2021 at 06:30 PM (#6015573)
Heck, he's still got a 161 OPS+ (on a 283 OBP). Just 13 hits on the year, 10 are XBH. Based on #6, he now has as many triples as singles (plus more doubles and HRs). It's one of the wackier small-sample flukes we're likely to see.
   8. The Duke Posted: April 26, 2021 at 06:43 PM (#6015576)
Jonathan schoop has some truly horrid numbers but the Tigers keep running him out there. On pace for -6 WAR season
   9. The Duke Posted: April 26, 2021 at 06:45 PM (#6015577)
Matheny has lucked into another powerhouse. If he rides this wave to the end, he’ll have one of the best records ever. And he’ll probably have a title foe both teams in Missouri. He can take that right to the HOF.

HOW WILL THE ANGELS WIN TODAY?!

Shohei Ohtani hits a home run, triples and steals home, pitches seven innings of shutout ball, and then plays the rest of the game in left field and makes a sliding catch to end the game with the bases loaded.
   11. The Yankee Clapper Posted: April 26, 2021 at 08:12 PM (#6015586)
After reading #10, I felt a need to check the box score, but was surprised, and disappointed, to learn the game hadn't started.

Shohei Ohtani hits a home run, triples and steals home, pitches seven innings of shutout ball, and then plays the rest of the game in left field and makes a sliding catch to end the game with the bases loaded.
Or he can't buy a ticket to the strike zone, and the Angels have to come back against the Rangers bullpen. For all his raw stuff, Ohtani can't throw strikes. It's so frustrating.

Single
Line out
Walk
Homer
Walk
HBP
Wild Pitch

The Ohtani Experience isn't boring, that's for sure.
   14. Hombre Brotani Posted: April 26, 2021 at 08:50 PM (#6015594)
So, Ohtani allows four runs, but also scores twice and drives in two.

He's very exciting, good and bad.
   15. Hombre Brotani Posted: April 26, 2021 at 09:41 PM (#6015601)
After facing eight batters and allowing four runs in the 1st inning, Ohtani's set down 10 in a row, six via strikeouts. He really is impossible to turn away from.
   16. cardsfanboy Posted: April 26, 2021 at 09:50 PM (#6015602)
Waino going out to pitch the ninth, might get a complete game loss in a 1-0 game.
   17. cardsfanboy Posted: April 26, 2021 at 09:50 PM (#6015603)
okay, make that 2-0. As Hoskins has hit two homeruns this game.
   18. cardsfanboy Posted: April 26, 2021 at 09:55 PM (#6015604)
2-0 complete game loss (so far) for Waino. Hopefully the Phillies bullpen lives up to expectations and maybe end up giving Waino a victory.
   19. cardsfanboy Posted: April 26, 2021 at 09:57 PM (#6015605)
dangit, with 107 pitches, they still bring Wheeler out, I agree with this if I'm a Phillies fan, as a Cardinal fan... c'mon save his arm, bring in the pen.
   20. cardsfanboy Posted: April 26, 2021 at 09:59 PM (#6015607)
Carpenter may have a slow bat, but he still has his eye.
   21. cardsfanboy Posted: April 26, 2021 at 10:04 PM (#6015608)
Phillies vaunted bullpen is in the game, have to like the chances with 1st and third and no outs in a 2 run game.
   22. cardsfanboy Posted: April 26, 2021 at 10:09 PM (#6015609)
dang, it wasn't pretty, but the Phil's pen succeeded.
   23. salvomania Posted: April 26, 2021 at 10:26 PM (#6015611)
If Arenado had had "one more biscuit for breakfast," as they used to say, that warning-track out to end the game would have been a two-run homer to end the game.

Oh well.

After 22 games, Goldschmidt has an OPS of .605 and Arenado is better, at .731, but still short of expectations. Dylan Carlson and Yadier Molina are the only tough outs in the lineup right now.
   24. Snowboy Posted: April 26, 2021 at 10:34 PM (#6015613)
40 is the new 30,
but in baseball
31 is the old 41

milquetoast NYY manager Aaron Boone ejected late in a close loss to BAL tonight
that 18-game winning streak over the sadsack O's is now a 4-game losing streak
and beaten by Matt "The Dark Knight" Harvey, no less

now the Yankees' radio station beat guy sounding, well, one alarm anyway

Yankees offense was designed to buy time. Time to evaluate the pitching and defense, time to find alternatives. Struggling bats make it harder to be patient. Don’t know how long they can wait for the light to go on.

Wainwright with a complete game loss. Last nine inning CG loss for the Cardinals was wainwright in 2007. Last one before that was Mulder in 2005 and before that was Todd stottlemire in 1996.

It’s a pretty infrequent event.

Wheeler got pulled in the ninth

Any ideas on when the last double CG was?

27th SB there this season vs Dodgers

2nd-worst in MLB is 15

much of that number vs LA has to do with the go-go Padres

but when then the defending champs just don't care, that suggests a bit of arrogance

still, they are winning

Looks like quite a few in the 7-inning DH era.

Before that it seems to be July 2016 when Matt Shoemaker of the Angels out-dueled James Shields of the White Sox 1-0 although Shields only had to go 8. If you require them both to go at least 9, that's April 2016 with Julio Teheran 1-0 over Cliff Lee. That's assuming I did stathead correctly.

That was the closest and coldest I ever was at a game. Mid-afternoon my financial advisor called and said a customer dumped 4 box seats on him that he couldn’t use. The seats were front row, directly behind home plate. Food and beverage service included. It was so cold we went into the bar to warm up for a couple of innings. I had one free beer and 3 hot chocolates. I had on a t-shirt, flannel shirt, sweat shirt and parka and was not warm.

Both pitchers were phenomenal. Lee only had 9 games left in his career — he had looked like he’d last forever at that point. :(

I sat in similar seats at Reading once; the highlight was Jay Baller firing a fastball halfway up the screen. Baller is most famous for being one of the five in the Von Hayes 5 for 1 trade.
