Heh good title. The Godfather was on tv this weekend. (Only problem, it was on 1700-2100. Yes, it's a long movie, and a great movie, but four hours? Man, that's a lot of commercials. And most of them were free promos by the channel for other shows, none of which I am interested in watching.)

Steven Matz pitched well last night, placed on bereavement leave today. Maybe some of the Cardinals insiders here have info?

Mets already lost their lone game of a series for the 8th time in 2022 last night, so they look for a sweep of the Braves today and to take the series finale on Wednesday.

washed-up Charlie Morton already has surrendered a couple of first-inning runs in the opener....
   3. The Duke Posted: May 03, 2022 at 04:10 PM (#6074987)
1. Roe V Wade died last night. Maybe Matz needed a moment

Morton surrenders another couple of runs in the second.

Only following on Gameday. so I'm not sure what happened, but with one out and runners on 1st and 2nd, Canha reaches on a "fielder's choice to 2b Ozzie Albies," with both runners advancing to load the bases. The next batter Lindor grounds out, which could've been the third out, but instead drives in a run, and then Alosno singles to drive in another run.

So I don't know what play Albies went for---attempted force at 2nd?---but if he just goes for the easy out, a struggling Morton perhaps escapes the inning unscathed.

How much leeway do managers have in allocating playing time now? My guess is that starting every series the manager gets a printout saying which guys have to take a game off? Same as to relievers, except every day? And I assume that if the manager is Dusty Baker with a veteran team, then everyone understands he's not going to pay attention to the printouts?

#4, he tried for the force at second and threw the ball away. Not sure why that isn’t an e-4.

#4, he tried for the force at second and threw the ball away. Not sure why that isn’t an e-4.

Just looked at the replay now, and it was a horrible decision to go for Jankowski at second---that's why it wasn't an error: even if the throw hadn't been terrible, Jankowski beat it anyway, so there's no error, as nobody reached/advanced on the errant throw (Canha reached on the fielder's choice to try for the play at second).

The grounder wasn't particularly hard hit, Jankowski is very fast, Albies, who was playing deep, had to range to his left away from second, then spin and throw. Just a bad decision by Albies, and it cost his team two runs in a game they eventually lost 5-4.

Sox/Angels through the 1st, 0-0, 12 pitches(9 strikes) combined for both pitchers, that seems impressive. Xander K's on 3 pitches, all looking. I'm on gameday so not sure exactly why you'd take 3 strikes?
   9. Hombre Brotani Posted: May 03, 2022 at 07:23 PM (#6075017)
Syndergaard with his second 5-pitch first inning this season. That guy has been a bargain, and I hope he's feeling the goodwill and looking to extend with the Angels.

Jo Adell sent back to AAA again. I get the feeling he's going to be a good player somewhere else.

EDIT: Seven pitches for Thor, not five.

apparently only one NL squad between the 1977 Dodgers and the 2022 Mets opened the season by winning each of their first seven series - and why, yes, it was, just as you guessed, the 2018 Diamondbacks, who won NINE consecutive series en route to a 21-8 start.

then.... the Dbacks went 5-18 tailspin to even their record after 52 games. still, they finished the first half on another 21-8 stretch for a solid 47-34 mark at the turn.

looks like the high water mark was 71-56, but an 8-22 run for streaky Arizona doomed them as they ultimately finished just 82-80.

team pitched to a solid 113 ERA+, led by Greinke and Corbin. but the OPS+ was 86, and there's your .500-range record. only Goldschmidt and Peralta managed above a 108 OPS+, and Mathis, Lamb, recently-retired Jay, Souza, Owings, Dyson, Avila, Murphy, and Ahmed were black holes eating up a couple of thousand ABs collectively.

Now 25 combined pitches (17 strikes) through two full. This game is really flying.

Well the Sox can't hit but their SP is usually decent. I suspect the Angels will win this 4-2 by scoring the winning runs late in the game.

Wacha has decided to walk 2 guys to get to Trout was a sound idea...
   14. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: May 03, 2022 at 07:46 PM (#6075026)
wow and he K's Trout with with a couple of change ups. Sox avoided some disaster there.

Red Sox plate 2 in the 4th on a homer, a BB and a couple of singles.
   16. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: May 03, 2022 at 08:33 PM (#6075037)
Sox get a lead off double in the 5th and strand the runner. 2 hard hit balls from Story and Xander find fielders for easy outs.
   17. Snowboy Posted: May 03, 2022 at 08:34 PM (#6075038)
There has been a trend this year of teams going with a four player outfield defense against certain hitters.
Maybe it's small sample size, but I've seen the Jays regularly doing it, and the Yankees.
Dan Shulman, who is a very good announcer, and also does basketball at a high level, has started to call it with a term borrowed from football.
"The Yankees are employing the 3-4 defense against Zack Collins"
   18. salvomania Posted: May 03, 2022 at 08:40 PM (#6075043)
Turned on the Cardinals-Royals game just in time to see Bobby Witt smack his first MLB homer, off a sinker about 6 inches off the ground that he lifted about 400 ft.
   19. The Yankee Clapper Posted: May 03, 2022 at 08:46 PM (#6075047)
Aaron Judge HR ties Toronto 1-1. Would have put the Yankees ahead if not for an unfortunate caught stealing during the at bat.
   20. Howie Menckel Posted: May 03, 2022 at 08:49 PM (#6075050)
Cookie Carrasco with 86 pitches in 7 scoreless innings in the nightcap vs the Braves, so they send him out there for the 8th as well.

very daring !

and Carrasco allows a 1-out double but finishes off the Braves in the 8th.

Max Scherzer just got ejected from a game he isn't pitching in for calling the strike zone "F***ing bulls**t"

Angels with three GIDPs in four innings is a real fun-killer.
   22. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: May 03, 2022 at 09:02 PM (#6075058)
Sox with runners on 1st and 3rd in the 7th, no outs. A chance to actually get more runs...
   23. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: May 03, 2022 at 09:05 PM (#6075059)
Story with a deep sac fly to center, Sox up 3-0. Maddon sticking with Thor in the 7th. Nice to see actually, he's thrown pretty well.
   24. The Yankee Clapper Posted: May 03, 2022 at 09:13 PM (#6075064)
Marwin Gonzalez wins the Pickle Game between 3rd & home to make it 4-1. Blue Jays unsuccessfully used their challenge earlier, so no resort to video that appears to show a tag made.

Now 5-1 after Hicks RBI single.

EDIT: Judge’s 2-run double makes it 7-1 in 7th!
   25. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: May 03, 2022 at 09:23 PM (#6075069)
Martinez solo shot makes it 4-0 in the 8th. Hanging curve and he really nailed it.

Angels staring at their third shutout loss in four games. Awful.

Mets complete the sweep today with a 3-0 win in a hectic 2-hour, 18-minute nightcap.

not good for hot dog and beer sales or in-game sportsbook betting revenue, alas.

Xander with a nice play in the hole for the 1st out of the 9th.

Sox win! 4-0. Let the winning streak begin!
   30. Snowboy Posted: May 03, 2022 at 09:40 PM (#6075084)
[24] It may not have made a difference, but that was a pretty bad blown call on the Marwin Gonzalez (NYY) tag.
He was in a rundown, and got tagged.
At this level, the umpire should assume a tag will be made in a rundown.
And it was.
Everyone knew it, Marwin stopped running, Vlad came up with his arm cocked looking at other baserunners, the shirt moved, the glove moved.
He's out, and everyone who's ever watched or played a baseball game knows it.
(Except the ump.)
   31. Snowboy Posted: May 03, 2022 at 09:52 PM (#6075098)
re 30: when I say "it may not have made a difference" the blown call came with 1 out.
Even if they made the correct call, or reversed the call (apparently impossible, since the Jays had already exhausted their challenge on a different play which looked reversible from most angles at 1B, but was not overturned) there would still only be 2 out if Marwin was called out.

Julian Merryweather could still have #### the bed, and I'll be honest, he probably would have. (That's my level of faith in Julian Merryweather.) But who knows, needing only one out instead of two, and watching his mates get an out on the bases, he might have found a way to keep the ball out of the centre of the zone. I doubt it, but mgmt seems to have that hope.

Sox game over in 2:23.

Giancarlo Stanton’s long 2-run HR gives the Yankees a 9-1 lead heading into the bottom of the 9th. Cautiously optimistic.

EDIT: Yankees win. That’s eleven in a row and a 3.5 lead!

Royals stomp cardinals with what looked like a 15 single attack

Cardinals announcers say Cards are having a big covid outbreak (on and off field ) with multiple symptomatic people. That's odd and worrying
   35. Howie Menckel Posted: May 03, 2022 at 11:06 PM (#6075111)
what is it with the Cardinals and COVID the past couple of years?

I shudder to ask what the postgame kibbutzing is like.

I mean, I KNOW Midwesterners are friendly, but....

How many Cardinals are still unvaccinated? I guess we can find out when they play in Toronto at the end of July.
   39. The Duke Posted: May 04, 2022 at 09:06 AM (#6075130)
Mozeliak said 95% of on and off field staff are vaccinated
   40. Rally Posted: May 04, 2022 at 09:54 AM (#6075134)

   41. salvomania Posted: May 04, 2022 at 01:26 PM (#6075161)
Well the rookie they just called up, Juan Yepez---who destroyed AAA & AZ Fall League pitching in 2021 and has 9 AAA homers in 2022---just doubled in his first MLB at-bat.
   42. The_Ex Posted: May 04, 2022 at 01:34 PM (#6075164)
No omnichatter for today yet. Dan Bellino (I think) just gave Bumgarner a 10 second hand massage with a staredown and when MadBum said something he ejected him. Looked like umpire baiting to me.

Certainly shouldn't be. All the evidence points to protection from vaccines degrading really rapidly with the new variants. The latest I heard is they think 40% of the US population had Omicron.
