I already dread watching Phillies games because of the bullpen - now two starting pitchers are on the DL. They are the two who weren't pitching that well, but I do NOT know who's going to start in their absence. Vince Velasquez and... Blake Parker served as what might be the first Phillies "opener" earlier this week. A lot of bullpen games.

Team OPS+ 108 - the hitters are doing well, except Kingery. And Roman Quinn, who never claimed to be a hitter.
Team ERA+ 90

Bullpen:

4.05 David Hale (acquired at deadline to save the bullpen)
4.76 Brandon Workman (acquired at deadline to save the bullpen)
8.22 Heath Hembree (acquired at deadline to save the bullpen)
13.50 David Phelps (acquired at deadline to save the bullpen)

1.93 Blake Parker, the new savior of the pitching staff
2.89 JoJo Romero in 9 innings

The old standbys:
4.86 Hector Neris (compare to the new famous closer, Workman with 4.76)
4.82 Tommy Hunter
5.23 Adam Morgan

Blake Parker is the only reliever, out of 20 tried so far, to have an ERA lower than either Aaron Nola or Zach Wheeler have put up. How is this so hard?

I love that Blake Parker has had a really nice 2020. I though he was done two years ago, and was glad the Angels traded him when they did, but it's awesome that reclamation projects like Parker make good and continue to have a career.

That’s only a 9-man bullpen. Try adding a couple more to spread the workload out a bit.

the Mets Team OPS+ is 124 (!!!) and their Team ERA+ is 91

a majority of their games have been started by either Rick Porcello (6.06), Michael Wacha (6.75), Steven Matz (8.63), or Robert Gsellman (9.64).

their bullpen has done a 180 in the past month, at least

Two ejections that happened today that are a bit unusual. Giants starting pitcher Tyler Anderson gets tossed in the middle of an inning for arguing a ball four call, and the Twins' Josh Donaldson gets tossed for kicking dirt on home plate while running out a home run, after he'd had words with the home plate umpire earlier in the AB.

White Sox win and clinch a postseason berth; first one since 2008. They're up 3 on the Twins for the division with 10 games left (Twins only have 8 games left).

Mets, in another must-win vs Phillies, take a 3-0 lead off Nola in the first inning.

Usually reliable Lugo answers in the bottom of the inning by giving up 3 Getty Goners and an RBI single to kick it all away +1.

More than half the called strikes by C. B. Buckner so far tonight were outside the zone according to Statcast.

all hail the magic of the wondrous ERASMO! - he of the 0.87 ERA who got the last out in the 2nd inning for Mets.

gregory polanco of the pirates comes up to bat in the fourth with two men on, dan mclaughlin notes that he is the worst hitting batter with RISP in the majors, so of course polanco crushes the next pitch into the right field stands.

this after cards starter dakota hudson has already left the game with elbow tightness.

we are falling apart, but thanks to this weird season, we are still in a playoff spot if the season ended today.

geez.

Back-to-back-to-back HRs by gritty, gutsy Brett Gardner, MVP candidate DJ LeMahieu, and MLB HR Leader Luke Voit (#20) give the Yankees a 7-2 lead. Also tie a record for most HRs in 3 games (16).

EDIT: Giancarlo Stanton HR breaks the record. He’s a triple short of the cycle, too.

EDIT II: Gleyber Torres hits the 5th Yankee HR of the inning. 9-2. 5 in an inning also ties a MLB record, but 1st time for the Yankees.

Mets - season on the brink - get the sacks drunk for Chirinos, aka Captain Clutch," with 2 outs and a 6-3 Phils lead.

a lazy fly later, and Chirinos is 0 for 18 with RISP this season

Gary Sanchez hits the Yankees 6th HR of the game. 10-3. 1st time in MLB history that a team has 6 HRs in 3 straight games. Toronto in tatters, with a doubleheader in Philadelphia tomorrow.

Toronto in tatters, with a doubleheader in Philadelphia tomorrow.

Tatters up!

The raggedy ass Phils bullpen has blown the lead again!

another gem in relief by Shreve for the Mets as he lowers his ERA to 1.99.

what were the Yankees thinking when they let him get away for nothing?

Season On The Brink Mets go to Justin Wilson for a third straight night at 6-6, 2 outs, one on, bottom of 8th.

4-pitch walk, then 3-0 and the obligatory strike and then another walk.

2-0 to Gregorius, and at this point the flailing, frustrated Wilson clearly can't - as the old saying goes - "hit a bull in the ass with a handful of sand."

but that doesn't stop Didi from ending the inning with a lazy fly ball on the next pitch (at least the pitch was a strike, but still).

Phillies led about 6.9 to 6, lol, but now it's tied again at 6-6.

and it took the Phillies about a month to realize that Workman's 2.222 WHIP might not be closer-worthy - so he got a few days off.

thus he was fresh enough to get to a second pitch before Nimmo hit one that I think still hasn't landed. more batting practice, and now it's 8-6 Mets.
   18. Howie Menckel Posted: September 17, 2020 at 11:13 PM (#5977407)
the Phillies replace the unemployable Workman with a lefty making his MLB debut.

Cano rebukes them for their impudence with another tape-measure shot (ok, 414 feet) on an 0-2 pitch, and it's 10-6 Mets.
   19. Howie Menckel Posted: September 17, 2020 at 11:33 PM (#5977409)
Edwin "Full Pack" Diaz, also on a third straight night of work, loads 'em up and goes 2-0 on McCutchen.

if PHI was allowed to have fans, the jockeying for position in the OF stands to catch the inevitable game-tying, soul-crushing, self-immolation-thread-activating gopher ball would have been epic.

instead, it's a routine grounder - and the Mets will be eliminated later next week than had been expected.

Voit’s amazing voyage continues with HR per at bat career stats putting him in top 10 and his single season total approaching McGwire levels. All of this while barely being able to run based on what I see from his home run trots. His 162 game pace is around 70 now.
