HOW WILL THE ANGELS WIN TODAY?!
   2. salvomania Posted: April 20, 2021 at 05:09 PM (#6014482)
Marco Gonzalez and his 8.22 ERA are flummoxing the Dodgers lineup today. I would not have expected that.

He's at 60 pitches through 4 innings so far---in his three previous starts that would get him through about 2+ innings---and has allowed just three baserunners, a bit better than his almost 2 per inning before today.

WILL THERE BE A TAYLOR WARD UPDATE TODAY?

Yes: This SI story, which at the bottom says:

A previous version of this story referred to Angels minor leaguer Taylor Ward not playing games at the club's alternate sites because of, per manager Joe Maddon, "different things going on in the world today.” Ward was not playing in games due to COVID-19 protocols.

For a guy with just a .682 ops coming into tonight's game, Starlin Castro has a good amount of hits (15 in 14 games) and leading the team in rbi with 11.
   5. cardsfanboy Posted: April 20, 2021 at 07:49 PM (#6014502)
I must be slow... are the Cardinal announcers (McLaughlin/Edmonds) not actually in the stadium for the game (Edmonds is talking about the snow on the ground in St Louis, while broadcasting a game in Washington)

I mean I get that there is really no reason for the announcers to be in the stadium, but it sounds weird to me (McLaughlin flat out said that Jim Edmonds was never once in a stadium last season while doing a broadcast) Still seems weird, even though I'm a technology guy, it's weird for me to think that a broadcast isn't happening live at the stadium.
   6. cardsfanboy Posted: April 20, 2021 at 07:50 PM (#6014503)
Nice play by Josh Bell on a foul ball.
   7. cardsfanboy Posted: April 20, 2021 at 07:51 PM (#6014504)
Goldy looked horrible on that strikeout.
   8. Edmundo got dem ol' Kozma blues again mama Posted: April 20, 2021 at 07:53 PM (#6014505)
The Phillies got their first hit from a starting CF since April 4!
Phils CF OPS entering today’s game: .240
Apparently the AZ SSs are even worse at .227
   9. cardsfanboy Posted: April 20, 2021 at 08:25 PM (#6014509)
Padres are leading the ML in stolen bases with 16.... Machado, who has had 20 in his best season, is leading the team with 4, so it's a team thing, not really just one guy doing the work.
   10. cardsfanboy Posted: April 20, 2021 at 08:38 PM (#6014513)
Turner not having good things with the ump tonight or last night, everything close has gone against him.
   11. cardsfanboy Posted: April 20, 2021 at 08:51 PM (#6014514)
Wainwright with the Cardinals third quality start (Flaherty had the first two) but of course he's staying in the game, and with the rules for quality start being the rules they are, he could lose it.

Molina just scored on a triple by Carlson.... Molina is absolutely not the fastest player on the planet, and that was very apparent on that triple.

I don't know about the Cardinals, but the Mariners' broadcast crew isn't actually at any of the away games this season. They're calling the away games remotely from their booth at T-Mobile Park in Seattle. They are in stadium for home games.
   13. cardsfanboy Posted: April 20, 2021 at 08:54 PM (#6014516)
Austin Dean looking stupid right now. Man on third, one out, tie game, 7th inning, and he's swinging at pitches outside while trying to pull.
   14. cardsfanboy Posted: April 20, 2021 at 08:54 PM (#6014517)
Got the sacrifice he needed though....
   15. cardsfanboy Posted: April 20, 2021 at 09:04 PM (#6014519)
Waino looking like Waino tonight, and the ump is helping him out (and maybe Molina)

Funny thing is that Edmonds was questioning Wainwrights arm angle and release location early in the game, and by the third inning the metrics (rotation etc) changed noticeably so that where it looked like he was short arming the pitch, now shows him releasing a little better.
   16. cardsfanboy Posted: April 20, 2021 at 09:11 PM (#6014520)
By the metrics, Carpenter is absolutely killing the ball, but when it comes to results, he's seeing nothing positive.
   17. Lassus Posted: April 20, 2021 at 09:20 PM (#6014521)
Seriously, fuck Tajuan Walker.
   18. phredbird Posted: April 20, 2021 at 09:22 PM (#6014523)

waino did look good tonight.

and of course he gets two runs of support ...

... and gallegos walks the leadoff batter in the 8th.

JIMINY CHRISTMAS NOW HE HITS THE NEXT BATTER.
   19. cardsfanboy Posted: April 20, 2021 at 09:25 PM (#6014525)
2-1 game, Gallegos who is actually a pretty dominant pitcher, clearly doesn't have it tonight. Walk and a hbp....

Jim Edmonds is pretty clearly one of those horrible parents, he's making fun of the kid who lost the tournament for his 15 year old kids tournament, and then gets a text message saying that the kid is on suicide watch and is making jokes about that.
   20. cardsfanboy Posted: April 20, 2021 at 09:27 PM (#6014526)
One reason I hate the three batter rule, it's clear to anyone who is watching the game that Gallegos had no control during the first batter.
   21. phredbird Posted: April 20, 2021 at 09:29 PM (#6014527)

yeah, that was in really poor taste ... i hope he gets a little talking to by the producers.

god i hate how we have just about pissed away this game. we're not gonna get a 1-run 10K effort from waino every time.
   22. phredbird Posted: April 20, 2021 at 09:31 PM (#6014528)

mike shildt with some heavy managering ...
   23. cardsfanboy Posted: April 20, 2021 at 09:31 PM (#6014529)
bases loaded for the rbi machine of the Nationals, Castro. Not sure I like this move.

Five infielders (literally) but no replacement pitcher after an intentional walk.
   24. salvomania Posted: April 20, 2021 at 09:34 PM (#6014530)
love the IBB to load the bases by the pitcher who can't find the plate and leaving him in
   25. salvomania Posted: April 20, 2021 at 09:35 PM (#6014531)
Does Shildt thinkk it's the 9th inning?
   26. cardsfanboy Posted: April 20, 2021 at 09:35 PM (#6014532)

That is the part I don't get.. .Gallegos is currently a pretty good pitcher, but tonight doesn't have it, Hicks should absolutely be in there right now.
   27. salvomania Posted: April 20, 2021 at 09:36 PM (#6014533)
I guess he reaaaallllly wants that innning-ending GIDP
   28. cardsfanboy Posted: April 20, 2021 at 09:37 PM (#6014534)
okay, that was a great pitch....
   29. salvomania Posted: April 20, 2021 at 09:37 PM (#6014535)
Oh, and Castro swings at a ball low and away for strike 2 and then watches strike 3 fill the zone
   30. phredbird Posted: April 20, 2021 at 09:38 PM (#6014536)

whew!

one more ...
   31. salvomania Posted: April 20, 2021 at 09:39 PM (#6014537)
..then he goes to 3-0 on Gomes...
   32. cardsfanboy Posted: April 20, 2021 at 09:39 PM (#6014538)
It's still bases loaded with a guy who is having issues finding the strike zone, the sad part is he's close, just not there or not there enough to convince the batters to swing.
   33. phredbird Posted: April 20, 2021 at 09:40 PM (#6014539)

G O D A M M I T
   34. salvomania Posted: April 20, 2021 at 09:40 PM (#6014540)
crud, walks him on 4 pitches.

Almost wriggled out of it
   35. cardsfanboy Posted: April 20, 2021 at 09:40 PM (#6014541)
That was horrible.... how the f- do you do that.
   36. cardsfanboy Posted: April 20, 2021 at 09:41 PM (#6014542)
I do have to swear, that in all the years of watching Cardinal baseball, that Shildt is absolutely the worst manager at working the bullpen... and it's not even close, even Whitey and Torre were better... heck Vern Rapp was better.
   37. salvomania Posted: April 20, 2021 at 09:41 PM (#6014543)
So NOW Shildt yanks him. That's pretty shildty bullpen management. You let the wild guy load the bases THEN yank him after he walks in the go-ahead run
   38. cardsfanboy Posted: April 20, 2021 at 09:42 PM (#6014544)
Everyone on the planet watching the game thought Reyes should have been brought in sooner.
   39. cardsfanboy Posted: April 20, 2021 at 09:43 PM (#6014545)
I predict a three pitch appearance for Reyes.
   40. cardsfanboy Posted: April 20, 2021 at 09:44 PM (#6014546)
or maybe not....
   41. phredbird Posted: April 20, 2021 at 09:45 PM (#6014547)
OH FORGOD SAKES WHAT IS GOING ON?1/1?

... nevermind.

i get that molina got a little crossed up, but jeez.
   42. cardsfanboy Posted: April 20, 2021 at 09:45 PM (#6014548)
how the #### was that not a strikeout??? robo umps now.
   43. salvomania Posted: April 20, 2021 at 09:46 PM (#6014549)
Clearly a strike, but Yadi having to reach across the zone affected the ump. Didn't matter as Robles grounds out on the 3-2 pitch with the bases loaded.
   44. salvomania Posted: April 20, 2021 at 09:47 PM (#6014550)
Well, Birds have 3-4-5 up, all RH vs the lefty Hand.
   45. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: April 20, 2021 at 09:48 PM (#6014551)
robo umps now.

They must be held accountable !
   46. Hombre Brotani Posted: April 20, 2021 at 09:48 PM (#6014552)
Ohtani gets the first out, then walks the bases loaded. How can these guys lay of pitches this close?! (Most of these pitches are not that close.)
   47. cardsfanboy Posted: April 20, 2021 at 09:49 PM (#6014553)
Just as a reminder, the Cardinals have not had a one run game all season long... in the history of their franchise, they have never gone 16 games to start a season without a one run game.... so let's see if they can keep that streak going tonight.
   48. cardsfanboy Posted: April 20, 2021 at 09:51 PM (#6014554)
if this guy keeps throwing these breaking balls, he's goin to get hammered....

edit: Yadi proving my point.
   49. salvomania Posted: April 20, 2021 at 09:51 PM (#6014555)
iof Shildt doesnt pinchrun for Molina here he should be dropped in the Potomac
   50. salvomania Posted: April 20, 2021 at 09:52 PM (#6014556)
let's justb keep the slowest runner in MLB on second down by a run in the 9th
   51. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: April 20, 2021 at 09:53 PM (#6014557)
Cards fans are always so emotional... holy cow.
   52. salvomania Posted: April 20, 2021 at 09:54 PM (#6014558)
Cards fans are always so emotional... holy cow.

NO WE'RE NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
   53. salvomania Posted: April 20, 2021 at 09:55 PM (#6014559)
OK, it won't matter, but a PR coulda tagged on that deep fly to the wall in right center and gotten to 3rd withg two outs. Jeez, even Molina coulda tagged on that one...
   54. cardsfanboy Posted: April 20, 2021 at 09:55 PM (#6014561)
wtf was yadi halfway on that? That is just poor baserunning.

No, Edmonds it's not the right play. This guy is very hittable.
   55. salvomania Posted: April 20, 2021 at 09:55 PM (#6014562)
OK, two outs in the 9th, you GOTTA pinch run, right?
   56. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: April 20, 2021 at 09:56 PM (#6014563)
Holy Cow....Wilmer Flores ! YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES !
   57. cardsfanboy Posted: April 20, 2021 at 09:57 PM (#6014564)
dumb game. Shildt is fully to blame, but the offense didn't do anything to deserve a win for the team anyway.
   58. phredbird Posted: April 20, 2021 at 09:57 PM (#6014565)

#### fuck ######## fuck ####
   59. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: April 20, 2021 at 09:59 PM (#6014566)
2 outs in the 9th, there is not a lot you can do, but pinch-running, if an option, should be done. IMHO.
   60. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: April 20, 2021 at 10:00 PM (#6014567)
If you don't, you're a Shildt-head !
   61. cardsfanboy Posted: April 20, 2021 at 10:04 PM (#6014568)
It wasn't about the two outs, he should have done it with one out, and it's minor crap like not tagging up on a one out fly ball to get to third that is also an issue. Which as the Cardinal announcers even pointed out, the pitcher was a breaking ball pitcher and the likelihood of him throwing a ball in the dirt wasn't unlikely if you get to third there is always the chance of a wild pitch...

Mind you, none of this happened, but you have to play for the odds, and this silliness of insisting that the catcher who starts the game should finish the game needs to go away in baseball. Yadier is a great player, having a great season so far, but he can't manufacture speed, replace him in the 8th or 9th if he gets on base and live with the consequences.

Nobody is ever going to call you out in a press conference for pulling your slow runner in the 8th inning of a close game.
   62. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: April 20, 2021 at 10:09 PM (#6014570)
Yadier didn't tag up on a fly-ball ?

Maybe onsetting dementia ... ?
   63. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: April 20, 2021 at 10:11 PM (#6014571)
Nobody is ever going to call you out in a press conference for pulling your slow runner in the 8th inning of a close game.

Sounds reasonable.
   64. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: April 20, 2021 at 10:27 PM (#6014573)
Well, Matt Olson tagged up and went to third. Go A's !
   65. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: April 20, 2021 at 10:30 PM (#6014574)
4th inning, 0:0 , runner on 3rd with Mitch Moreland AB, Twins play infield-in... wtf.

Ok, then the walk.

Mind-Twins-Games !

Then the basehit by Seth Brown.

Then confusion, was time-out called ?

Then fist-fight !
   66. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: April 20, 2021 at 10:36 PM (#6014575)
Baseball is fun, every couple of months, something happens which you haven't seen before.
   67. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: April 20, 2021 at 10:38 PM (#6014576)
Instant Karma !
   68. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: April 20, 2021 at 10:45 PM (#6014577)
WTF @Oakland

Lights off @Oakland
   69. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: April 20, 2021 at 10:51 PM (#6014578)
When the lights go out in Oakland, it might be an incoming earthquake with tsunami following...
   70. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: April 20, 2021 at 10:51 PM (#6014579)
Get to higher ground, fans !
   71. Howie Menckel Posted: April 20, 2021 at 11:07 PM (#6014582)
Kimbrel, with a 3-1 lead in the 9th, is wild.

walks McNeil
throws 4 balls to Davis in 5 pitches
walks McCann

but hang on - Davis swings at 2 terrible pitches for the charity strikeout, so it's only 1st and 2nd, one out

Guillorme pokes a single to leave the bases drunk (though not as loaded as the bleacher creatures on a chilly evening)

Nimmo strikes out, so loaded with 2 out but 25 pitches already for Kimbrel (who will presumably be sidelined for tomorrow's tilt)

now Lindor - grasping the situation, no I am just kidding - hits a feeble grounder to first on the first pitch to end it
   72. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: April 20, 2021 at 11:09 PM (#6014583)
I can't see the umpires in Oakland... why resume play ?
   73. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: April 20, 2021 at 11:10 PM (#6014584)
Nobody to spit at... how can they restart the game ?
   74. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: April 20, 2021 at 11:11 PM (#6014585)
wtf.
   75. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: April 20, 2021 at 11:53 PM (#6014586)
In the Angels game, Pujols homered and then Iglesias walked...it's like the world stopped spinning right there. What are the odds of those 2 things happening back to back. Of course Suzuki just homered in the same inning so it's like lightening striking several times in the same spot.
   76. The Duke Posted: April 21, 2021 at 12:31 AM (#6014587)
Check out the rain deluge that the umpires made the reds/d-backs play through. Reds got hosed.
