Orioles remove ‘The Sun’ and Dempsey’s signs from Camden Yards

The Orioles removed two longtime noteworthy signs from Camden Yards on Thursday, taking down “The Sun” signage from above the center field scoreboard and the Dempsey’s Brew Pub sign on the B&O Warehouse.

The team said it’s opening the scoreboard space for sponsorship opportunities and that the future of the restaurant and its space are to be announced. In January, the Orioles replaced its longtime concession operator with a new company for the upcoming season.

The Baltimore Sun logo had been featured atop the ballpark’s scoreboard and in its clock since it opened in 1992, becoming closely associated with the iconic venue. The clock numbers that spelled out Baltimore Sun were being covered Thursday.

“The Sun” was an iconic part of the ballpark; I have little faith in the Angelos clan being able to come close.

I hope nobody takes Angelos up the offer to replace The Sun signage, which is as much of an integral part of Oriole Park as the warehouse behind the RF pavilion. You might as well remove the statues.

They're gonna have to find another sponsor with exactly twelve letters in their name, aren't they?

Will M*****F***** sponsor it? Is there a corporation out there with that name?

Ironic that the story here is behind The Baltimore Sun paywall, so only a few people will actually read it. Found a good piece by the Baltimore Fishbowl at https://baltimorefishbowl.com/stories/a-simple-marriage-how-the-baltimore-sun-sign-rose-and-set-on-camden-yards/ which says the sponsorship supposedly cost the newspaper between $250,000 and $400,000 a year. The Orioles' attendance has plummeted in recent years due to the ongoing rebuild so I can see why The Sun's bean counters might feel they haven't been getting their money's worth. But still, with the Orioles having stuffed their minor leagues with superb prospects the organization seems poised for another run of success over the next 5-8 years. The newspaper cutting ties at this point is probably not the smart move.

Meh, The Sun hasn't been the same since the bosses screwed over Augustus "Gus" Haynes.

Try turning off javascript. I turn it off by default for most websites.

Both the Baltimore Banner and Camden Chat have good pieces as well if you're interested.

I think this is a correct and reasonable decision mapquest directions because those signs have no effect and should be removed.

Being a newspaper in this century, there's a chance that $400k is just too much money regardless of how well the team is doing.
