Orioles trade Dylan Bundy to the Angels

According to Ken Rosenthal, Baltimore sent Bundy to LA in exchange for Triple-A pitching prospect Isaac Mattson. Jeff Passan reported that the three pitchers included in the package to Baltimore are Zach Peek, Kyle Bradish and Kyle Brnovich.

The Orioles took Bundy fourth overall in the 2011 draft, but the right-hander wasn’t able to become the ace they were hoping for in his first four seasons in the big leagues.

In 2019 he went 7-14 with a 4.79 ERA over 161 innings pitched. His ERA never dipped below 4.00 during his tenure with the Orioles.

Orioles want to set the record for the most losses, I see

Listening to MLB channel on radio last night, the hosts mentioned that Trevor Cahill led the Angels with 102.1 IP, and Andrew Heaney led the team with 18 starts. Anyone know if these are lowest team leader numbers ever?

It does look like those are the lowest team pitching leader totals since 1901, even including strike years, unless I messed up the searches.

The Angels are the only team that didn't have any 103-inning pitchers. The 2012 Rockies are the only other team that only had one 100-IP starter. Jeff Francis led them with 113.

They're also the only team with no 19-GS pitchers. Seven teams have had one guy start 19 games- the 2003 Royals, the 1993 Indians (Jose Mesa had 33 starts for them that year and never started another game) and 1993 Rockies- and four short-season teams- 1994 Phillies, 1981 Cubs and Pirates, and 1918 Giants.

The Angels pitching was so garbage that an Orioles pitcher is a HUGE upgrade. If Bundy ends up being the 4th/5th starter, this will have been a good offseason for the Angels. If Bundy ends up with the most WAR on the staff (as he would have done last year), 2020 will be another postseason without Mike Trout.

Thanks Itchy! The way they said it I wasn't sure if it was a record, or just astonishingly low.

The Orioles are clearly going to try to emulate the Astros strategy of deliberately tanking for three or four or five years, but it's doubtful that they have the competence or the patience to pull it off.

Or the trash cans.

I can't remember who wrote it, but I saw a perfect tweet on Bundy that was to the effect of,

Rays acquire Bundy: what a great upside move!
Royals acquire Bundy: he's washed up, you idiots!
