OT - 2018-19 NBA thread (All-Star Weekend to Twelfth of Never edition)

I estimate only 10-12 Primates care about the NBA, none of whom can be bothered to curate their own thread to avoid detracting from what this site is really about:  Kyler Murray and how the Galactic Empire did nothing wrong.

What did the Pistons expect to happen to Drummond there? I think he regretted the shove right away, but a player who lashes out like that when his team is down 40+ shouldn't be allowed to remain in the game.

The Jazz' defensive scheme just isn't going to work. They're not athletic enough to pull off the Bucks' scheme shading Harden that extreme to make him go right, so they just end up giving straight drives to the basket with either an easy lob or open corner three on every possession.

I would think that the NBA could just as easily have tweeted this, given the 26 games vs 101 aspect:

The Jazz bench was a cozy 4-26 from the field.

Now, I remember well the series a few years back where the Spurs beat Houston, even though Houston rolled the Spurs in game one and the narrative was how can the Spurs score/hang with the Rockets. But I do worry about how they are going to be able to score enough to stay in the series.

Also, Detroit without Blake is a special level of awful. Luke Kennard was probably their best player yesterday.

The end of the OKC/Portland game was fun. OKC just couldn't make a shot to save their life.

Didn't get predictions in pre-start of the playoffs, but I am going GSW/POR and MIL/TOR, with GSW winning the 3 peat in 6 over MIL.

---

Rooting interest goes something like MIL, TOR, POR, GSW....BOS. I actually wouldn't be opposed to HOU making the Finals, though I know I'd hate watching it when it's going on.

---

Since it came up a couple of times:
Kevin Pelton @kpelton 11h11 hours ago

Final Game 1 totals for all games:
- Winning teams shot 97-237 (40.9%) on 3s
- Losing teams shot 58-233 (24.9%) on 3s
- The team that made more 3s won every game
- The team that shot a higher percentage on 3s won every game

Here you go. There was an overhead replay in the broadcast that made it clear that it was only 3 steps after the gather, and a defensible missed call (even debatably legal, though my read is that the gather clearly came early), but the main angle obscures the gather in a way that made it look egregious, especially live.

I had the same reaction. Capela is so athletic that trying to shade Harden is giving him tons of room to operate rolling to the basket.

At most that was 3 steps and the gather looked very close to it being 2 steps. Don't think that's a bad missed call.

kanter started with his back to the rim, 35' feet away from the basket.
he power dribbled into a gather about 30' away from the rim.
then he galloped into a jump stop...which is a travel on its own.
then he took 3 steps...which is also a travel.

he dribbled the ball once. his pivot foot moved 3 times. his non-pivot foot moved 6 times.
6 steps.
1 dribble.

that's a travel.

Only the main shot and no replays. It really does look like there's no way it's not a travel from that angle.

I'm with NJ. It's hard to really Zapruder the play from the footage available, but it looks like a pretty bog-standard gather-roughly-even-with-a-step-plus-two-steps that everyone does.

   1525. KronicFatigue Posted: April 15, 2019 at 08:49 PM (#5832233)
How different would the game look if they allowed 5 steps compared to the current "2 plus the gathering step"? I feel like it wouldn't be that much different. Dribbling doesn't really impede movement so much as it prevents quick shooting b/c the ball is below the waist. Allowing over two steps kind of defeats the purpose of requiring dribbling, IMO

the Nets just are not scared of Philly.
let's go back to what i said before the series started:
regardless of whether embiid goes FULL EMBIID, make no mistake: the sixers are vulnerable. they don't know each other; they haven't played together; since the harris trade, guys have been streaming in and out of the lineup due to various scrapes and bruises. you can't trust a team that has no continuity.

plus, as i've said, brooklyn is more than capable of beating them. BRK can steal a game because of the refs; they can steal a game if embiid gets back spasms or whatever; and they can always outscore the sixers if they get hot from beyond the arc. personally, if i was going to vegas, i'd bet on the nets to win in 6 games.

Seeing Mutumbo and Iverson delight in Boban's performance is pretty great.
That was utterly delightful.

Tobias Harris looks lost in this offense. The Dunc'd on Podcasters talked about how he's such a good player, but his skills are redundant on this team. He doesn't get the ball, he isn't a primary option, he doesn't get space. He's just a spot-up shooter for these guys, and he's not hitting any shots.
   1540. Hombre Brotani Posted: April 15, 2019 at 09:34 PM (#5832257)
Why can't Simmons play with this sort of aggression all the time?

I'm glad to see the traveling conversation. That, and the bullshit charge-no-play-on-the-ball defense are my two hobby horses in the NBA. I just watched a Julius Erving highlight film (god, I loved that guy). Not a single travel or near travel on it. Not one. Whatever Kanter did, the problem is the court is too small if guys can take three steps. That's one or two dribbles over half court for many of these guys.

It may be the biggest playoff comeback ever in terms of deficit overcome (don't know) and given that it was an 8 seed on the road against a 1 seed, and a 1 seed that is one of the two or three greatest one-group-of-guys dynasties in NBA history, I would guess that it was the single most unlikely playoff win by any team in the history of the league.

You know the old "respect the game" mantra?

the Warriors, not so much.

and that is not to ignore great credit to the Clippers for fighting like few teams would have for what the Warriors would ultimately hand them. but they needed a willing accomplice - and got one.

would be a class move for the Warriors to refund the astronomical playoff ticket costs they charged tonight for a team that failed to care. losing is tough but acceptable. not giving a #### is a disgrace. will the Warriors acknowledge that? I am not hopeful.

the greatest comebacks in NBA playoff history are confined to beating the favorites who gave a #### about the game but lost anyway.

I am sure they will get right on that, right after sports writers start giving back paychecks for columns they mailed in.

Also, I think your analysis is actually totally off. This wasn't about not giving a shit. It was about hubris. You don't get up 31 points to begin with, if you don't give a ####. They thought they were invincible, and switched into cruise control. Then when things started getting tight, couldn't get back into gear.

Further, one of their issues was Curry getting into foul trouble, mostly contending balls he probably shouldn't have gone after. If anything, that is a sign of giving too much of a shit, and not about not caring enough.

Finally, I think that is really disrespectful of the Clippers, who put in an amazing effort, and an amazing performance, to pull this off.

In other news, I will be along later, to pour gasoline on your lawn, and set it on fire.

The contact @JoelEmbiid makes to Allen’s Head is a Flagrant 1.5. Regular season, Embid May have been ejected on a FFP2 depending on time and score. Contact is unnecessary and borderline excessive. Given #NBAplayoff situation FFP1 is correct call.

I understand the frankness, but think I do philosophically disagree with the idea that there should be a different standard in the playoffs. Context obviously matters, but certain types of calls should always be the same, IMO.

"that is not to ignore great credit to the Clippers for fighting like few teams would have for what the Warriors would ultimately hand them."

and yet we have this:

Three days in...the first round is off to a really fun start.

The Warriors should win the series anyway, even without Cousins, and the deification process can resume. but you aren't obligated to look at a bowel movement and call it a delicacy. or at least, you shouldn't be.

Everyone poops.

It's certainly more competitive than a lot of us thought it would be, though I suspect the Sixers and maybe some others than split the opening 2 will still close things out in 5.

I'm kind of worried about the Raptors and their fans, though. If they don't come out and win easily tonight it could get ugly.

With the Leafs up 2-1, nobody in the GTA even remembers that the Barneys are in the playoffs.

There isn't a word of your response, that isn't complete horsecock, Howie.

Curry and the Warriors could stand in the middle of Market Street and shoot somebody and they wouldn’t lose any supporters, okay? It’s like, incredible.

This is bull. The Warriors have already lost a ton of supporters. Obviously they have their actual core of lifelong supporters, that will never leave them, as every team does (except the Miami Marlins). But the bandwagon that started up when the splash brothers began, is already a lot emptier than at its peak.
They lost a ton of supporters when Durant signed (the same way LeBron lost a lot of supporters when he teamed up wit Wade and Bosh in Miami). They lost more when Cousins came on board. And they have bled supporters from general Warriors fatigue, the way that happens to all dynasties.

"that is not to ignore great credit to the Clippers for fighting like few teams would have for what the Warriors would ultimately hand them."

and yet we have this:

"I think that is really disrespectful of the Clippers, who put in an amazing effort, and an amazing performance, to pull this off."

This is just lip service. You can't go on a huge rant that diminishes the Clippers performance and effort, and then say "of course that should not take away..." All you were doing was taking away. Heck, even in that that speck of lip service, you are taking away credit from the Clippers, by saying the Warriors handed it to them.

It's the equivalent of somebody saying: "I don't mean to be offensive (or rude, or whatever), but..." You know what follows is going to be offensive. You can throw out everything before the "but." As a writer, you should really be aware of how these rhetorical devices work.

The Warriors should win the series anyway, even without Cousins, and the deification process can resume. but you aren't obligated to look at a bowel movement and call it a delicacy. or at least, you shouldn't be.

Also nonsense. Nobody said the Warriors were great in that game. Just that your "they don't care" analysis is the turd in the punch bowl here.

And I know it is complete nonsense, because I am rooting for the Clippers. My team has a chance of making the finals in the East (at least theoretically). and it would be great for me if somebody knocked them off. I have no allegiance to the Warriors, I am not rooting for them, I just call them as I see them. But to disagree with your yelling and shaking your fist at the clouds routine, means to automatically be branded as a Warriors fanboy.

I am not here for this sort of back and forth between posters... But I'm kind of here for it. The Lakers were bad enough that I kind of want all the rest of you to suffer as well. Tear each other apart! THE ONLY RULE: THERE ARE NO RULES!

What did I say about everything that comes before the "but"?

Good... Let the hate flow through you.

Whatever the analysis, GSW lost a game it shouldn't have last night and extended its series with LA by one game, maybe more. They also lost Cousins. That may not be a big loss, but it's a knock on your depth, and given that you just allowed the series to go longer, that doesn't help. I can see the Clips taking one more game and making this a 6 game series. GSW remains the favorites, but they've played a lot of games these past four years, and they've got some guys who could wear down. They should've been more careful with the ball, more clinical, last night then they were. They are prone to getting lax when enjoying a big lead. Kudos to the Clips for hanging tough. And much gratitude as I think the only way GSW loses is if they get worn down and run into a Houston team still playing great D and hitting its shots.

I think the biggest impact on GSW is the extra game (at least) to play. There are a lot of miles on the tread, a first world problem being a dynasty, and extra games add to the drag and make the latter rounds harder (more so than it does their less accomplished rivals).

The technicals on Durant ad injury to Cousins don't help either.
