New England Patriots quarterback Cam Newton has tested positive for the coronavirus and is out for Sunday’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs, league sources tell ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Field Yates.
“Late last night, we received notice that a Patriots player tested positive for COVID-19. The player immediately entered self-quarantine,” the Patriots said in a statement Saturday. “Several additional players, coaches and staff who have been in close contact with the player received point of care tests this morning and all were negative for COVID-19.”
In a statement, the NFL said Sunday’s scheduled game will be played either Monday or Tuesday due to “positive COVID-19 tests on both teams.” A source told Schefter that “Tuesday is more likely.”

1. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 03, 2020 at 12:48 PM (#5980839)...because NFL talk does not belong in the college football thread. Has nothing to do with any virus.
my bad
...and then that happens.
Or at least close enough to make LaFleur decide to go for it on fourth.

My son: "Why are they kicking a FG? They need a touchdown and 2-point conversion."
He's 10.
Imagine a 4th grader knowing more than the head coach of the Green Bay Packers.

funny because it's true (interesting because one analytics group ranked him 3rd in making what they see as the optimal choice. a little silly on their part, because it doesn't take into effect injuries, fatigue, availability of 'trick plays,' quality of opposing coach in such spots, etc.)
less understood, I think, is what deep doo doo they were in.
you have to convert a 4th down from the 8 to give yourself a 24 pct chance of winning the game (basically, 50-50 on do you make the 2-point conversion and 50-50 to win in OT).
analytics geeks had the Packers' chance of winning at 10.8 pct if they went for it (adding in difficulty of getting the TD) and 7.8 pct if they kick a FG (3 timeouts and 2-minute warning, and TD avoids OT issue).
fun fact: "no team had attempted a field goal in the final three minutes of a game when trailing by between four and eight points since the Falcons in 2015. LaFleur was an assistant on Dan Quinn's staff in Atlanta for that game."
Quinn's game management skillset reached its zenith in the Super Bowl, where he blew a 25-point lead with a series of decisions that deftly threaded the needle between sheer incompetence and the league starting to wonder if "the fix was in."
meanwhile Tony Romo had 8 or 10 kittens when the Bills only kicked an extra point late to get within 17. he acted as if being down 16 late was no big deal even though:
- you need a TD
- you need a 2-point conversion
- you need another TD
- you need another 2-point conversion
- you need to hold the opponent scoreless
and all that for a 50-50 shot in OT!
I'd have gone for 2, but it wasn't that far away from "angels head on a pin" territory at that point.
Lower, since Brady would have 2 minutes to get his team into field goal position to win the game. Otoh, they could get a 3 and out and get their own field goal to win the game, but that's less likely.
Probably. The thing about being down 8 is that if you don't get the 2-pt conversion, then you still need a field goal drive, so the field goal at least meant that they didn't have to worry about that. And a turnover on downs there would mean that they'd need to get the same stop that they needed when they elected to kick off.
And if they had succeeded they would be in the catbird seat (relatively speaking), down only 6 after the Bucs made their figgie.
It is almost like scoring points puts you in a better position than not scoring points!
The Patriots backup QB hype cycle is moving faster these days.
